Manually zipping creates broken ePub-files?

Hi all,
I'm using ADE for the purpose of testing how my ePub-files are rendered in different programs. For doing this, I manually tweak the contents of ePub-files, compress them, rename them and throw them into ADE and Stanza.
Up till now I didn't succeed even once in creating an ePub-file that ADE renders correctly. I first thought the little modifications in the contents broke the file, but the simple process of renaming an .epub to .zip, uncompressing, re-compressing (without modifications) and then renaming back to .epub produces files that ADE can't read: "The document appears to have minor errors that might cause it to be displayed incorrectly". For compressing I used the default method on the Mac, and WinRAR on a PC. Both methods didn't work for ADE, but they did for Stanza.
Somehow manually zipping created files that are slightly different from the original ePub-files, but not so radically different that they break in all readers; just ADE, it seems. Does anyone know what's the cause of this, and how I can resolve this?

The most common cause here is that you compressed the mimetype file.  By spec it must be first in the file and must be uncompressed.
I'm not sure how to do this using GUI tools from but you can find an explanation on the IDPF forums

when using Pages to create an EPUB file, how would I force a page brake?

Sory Peter but you don't seem to understand.
If you pick up an e-book by random on the iBook Store, you will see that professional e-books ALWAYS start their chapters at the top of a new page, whatever the reader, the color of the page or the size of the text are.
I know how to add a new chapter with the use of the appropriate style in Pages but I want to be able to divide SECTIONS as well.
What I want to to do is to force a page break in between two paragraphs and apparently, this option is not possible with Pages.

  • Creating an epub file from a Framemaker 10 document

Are there special tools I have to have to turn a Framemaker document into an epub file format?
    Thank you.

I did some experimenting with this a few months ago.
The basis of the epub format is XHTML. There are free tools (such as Calibre) that do a good job converting from (X)HTML to epub (and other e-book formats).
If you have one book to do it is probably quickest just to grab the text and reformat with an HTML editor, then process with Calibre or similar.
Using other tools, such as Robohelp, MIF2Go, or FrameMaker’s built-in Save as HTML, would take some time to set up properly, and would therefore be worthwhile if you had a number of books to do that were similarly constructed.
If planning for the future it might be worth considering using XHTML as the base format (i.e. finalising the text in this form) and repurposing either to epub or to print via FrameMaker, or both, as required.
That was my conclusion, at any rate. You need to look at it in your own context, of course.

Adobe Indesign can do this.  I'm sure a simple google search would find various Windows apps.
You cannot submit books directly to Apple using a Windows machine, you would have to use an Aggregator like Smashwords. So you might want to see what format the Aggregator prefers.

  • Smart quotes and em-dashes in epub file

When I create an epub file from my InDesign book file, I find that sometimes (not always, thought!) my smart quotes and em-dashes revert to gibberish.
For example, when I open the epub file, the em-dash is fine, but in chapter 2, it changes to —.
Does anyone know how I might correct this?
    Thanks so much!

It sounds like somethings wrong with the chapter's character encoding.  The character encoding is declared in the header of the ePub HTML. From ID it's:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" standalone="no"?>
This test has UTF-8 declared in the first line of its source code:
    http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/encodetest/UTF8.html
    And this has no encoding
    http://www.zenodesign.com/forum/encodetest/None.html
Most browsers let you override or choose the character set, so in Safari if you set the character set to View>Text Encoding>default, you'll see a difference between the above links, but if you set it to Unicode (UTF-8) they both display correctly. In FireFox it's View>Character Encoding.
You can check and edit the contents of the .epub file by changing the extension from .epub to .zip, and then extracting the contents.

  • Fonts in EPUB files

When I generate output as an eBook, the results do not use the correct fonts.  I assume I need to embed the fonts somehow, but I have not been able to find a way to do this.
The font names are listed in the .css file, so I don't think that's the problem.
I'm using RoboHelp 10, and using EPUB3 as the eBook format.

Also, I wanted to mention: although embedding the font allowed paragraphs defined with the font to work properly in ibooks, character formatting using the same font did not work. I had to also perform the following to make the character formatting work. I think this is in an issue in ibooks only. It worked nicely on an Android device. I wanted to add this information in case it is helpful for others:
    1. Create a file named: com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml, which includes the following lines:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <display_options>
    <platform name="*">
    <option name="specified-fonts">true</option>
    </platform>
    </display_options>
    2. After creating your epub file, change the .epub file extension to .zip and unzip the file.
    3. Copy the com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml file into the META-INF folder of the epub file structure.
    4. Open the content.opf file and declare the com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml file, like so:
    <item href="/META-INF/com.apple.ibooks.display-options.xml" id="caido" media-type="application/xhtml+xml"/>
    5. Use a utility, such as ePubPack (it's free) to compress the files into an epub. You should use a utility, because simply rezipping the epub files and changing the extension back to epub may not work (some files in the epub need to remain uncompressed).
It would be nice if Robohelp did this automatically. Apparently InDesign does this automatically (that's what I read on a blog posting, but I can't confirm that since I don't use InDesign).

  • Why does a downloaded epub file get the flv extension added to the filename?

I created an ePub file that works fine. I used the Creative Cloud version of inDesign on my MacBook Pro with OS 10.7.
I emailed to someone to view. The recipient was going to download the ePub to her Mac and sync with her iPad.
She was using Safari and gmail. She received the email with the attachment. When she clicked download in the email next to the attachment, it downloaded but added the .flv extension to the file.
With this extension, the file could not be added to the iTunes library. Removing the .flv so that the filename was restored to the original with the .epub extension, all worked just fine.
I set all .epub files to be opened by Adobe Digital Editions on my computer.
I replicated the same situation on my Mac with Safari and gmail. Then, I tried with my yahoo email account. Same situation, file downloads but gets .flv extension added. Guess I can't blame gmail.
Tried with Chrome and file downloaded with correct name, no extra extension.
Tried with Entourage and file save with .epub, no extra extension.
Have not yet tried this on a windows machine but will do so in a bit and report back with results.
How can I prevent the extra extension?
    Thanks,
    Alex

Just checked this on a Windows 8 laptop.
Went to gmail. Opened the message and downloaded the ePub file. It downloaded just exactly as expected. No change to the file name.
I zipped up a folder with the ePub file inside and tried that zip file. I emailed the zip file to my gmail account and then downloaded the zip file and unzipped it. The ePub file came through the process with no alteration to its name.
As long as I send the ePub inside a zip, I don't seem to have a problem.
I would still like to know how to prevent the change in name when I email just the ePub file, though.
    Thanks,
    Alex

  • How can I get my ipad Pages app to keep video when converting to epub file?

I am trying to create a epub file to be opened in  Ibook using Pages on the IPad. I have inserted a video and when I go to export to Ibooks it gives me a warning that video has been converted into an image.  I have created this same video on a desktop computer and been able to email and open it in IBook on my IPAD.
Is there a way to have video embedded on the IPAD Pages app to be able to be published as an epub and be able to be opened later.
    Cassy Mate

I'm wondering about this also. Even when importing very small videos it converts into pictures... Hope someone can shed some light on this matter for us!

  • HT4168 ePub file plays all videos the same...Any suggestion.?

I created an ePub file today for the first. The pages document was good, included are three different videos in three separate chapters. The Pages document plays all three and an m4a music file perfectly. Somehow when it converts the document to the ePub file it somehow mixes the coding up. Each video shows the right image initially, but when played it plays the first video chosen for all of the videos.
So, the initial images seems right but when selected the video defaults to whichever video is played first on my iPad3.
Again the pages doc is fine.. Any suggestions? I am using OSX Lion and Pages 9

    Tim, thanks for your response.
To diagnose easily and remove any additional implications of WMC, I shall comment only on WMP:
Sometimes the Video won't start (remember i am just clicking on the IFO in the ripped DVD folder, not playing an actual DVD), although most times, it does start.
When it starts, it seems to play OK , but if you try fast forward/rewind or selecting elsewhere in the video, it freezes.
In all cases, no message is shown.
When I click later in the video, WMP shows the desired time in the video but then seems to do nothing, although the control buttons SEEM to work (e.g. pause/play toggles). At this stage. WMP is showing around 40% CPU and 131Mb memory. No matter how long
I wait, I can't resume the video. I can close WMP easily when this sort of problem happens, so it is not a total 'freeze'. CPU/RAM then reduces to zero.
Restart WMP and video starts OK. Normal running is 2% CPU and 95Mb RAM.
Try e.g. chapter settings and it 'freezes' with CPU up to 43%.
If I double-click on a different IFO, it opens up in WMP, replacing the 'frozen' video and plays OK with CPU reverting to 2%.
It exhibits this sort of performance on all videos on U: and V: (two partitions of the Seagate 3Tb drive), but ANY video on any other USB drive is fine.
When I say 'freeze' it doesn't 'feel' like a software crash; it isn't as serious. However WMP cannot restart the video.
Reminder that it always seems to work ok in VLC.
    Thanks
    Paul

  • OT: Distributing epub files

So I've been learning how to create epubs from InDesign and also about converting them to Kindle files.  I'm about to start work on our next magazine issue and will be setting up all the Articles (image export settings, etc.) as I go to create the epub files.
Now here's my question:  Is it unusual to distribute .epub and .mobi files directly on a company website?  The thing is:  Our magazine is free for our members, so I don't think we can distribute it through the typical Amazon or Barnes & Noble methods.  For one thing, our magazine is only for our members, and I don't think you can limit distribution on there like that. But I really don't know.  I know very little about this type of publishing, only that my boss loved the sample Kindle file I made him from one of our brochures.  :-)  I've basically just been instructed to figure out how all this stuff works (thankful for lynda.com!).  I think my company would be fine just placing the completed files on our website for members to download, but I don't know how common that is (what would other companies do with free magazines in these formats?).
The new DPS stuff looks interesting, but that looks like a big financial commitment for the necessary subscriptions, etc.  So that's probably not an option for now.
    Thanks for any input.
    Phyllis

Depending on your resources, you could encourage users to sign up to have the files emailed to them.
iPad users would be able to open the epub directly from the mail app on the iPad -- it goes right into iBooks. You need to coach Kindle users how to forward the mobi/prc file on to their free Kindle account ([email protected]), but once it's set up, they only need to essentially forward the email, and the periodical appears on their device as soon as they are in range of WiFi.
Baen books takes the number of options to the extreme:
    http://www.webscription.net/p-588-1812-the-rivers-of-war.aspx
But it's a good example of what's possible.

  • Since changing our computer I have been unable to download ebooks to my Reader Library I get a message Some file types associated with EPUB files are not associated with Reader Library; Waterstones suggest that I may have accidentally created a new Adobe

When I try to download them from the Waterstones website I get a message saying:
‘Some file types associated with EPUB files are not associated with Reader Library.  Do you want to associate them now?  When I reply yes I get another message; ‘Configuration error unable to update EPUB files check network firewall and try again’.
The ‘books’ are saved in the Download directory and I can’t transfer them from there to my E-Reader. I have not had any problems before, it was very simple; I saved the download and it automatically went into the Reader Library.
I contacted HP and they said it is a software error and suggested I contact Waterstones.  I contacted Waterstones Customer Support and got the following response:
As the error message is specifically mentioning the firewall it does sound like something in the firewall settings is stopping the download from taking place correctly. However, the files should not be being saved to the Download folder. It would be worth trying again by going to your Digital Order History on your Waterstones.com account and pressing the download button, and then making sure to press "Open" not "Save". When you press Open rather than Save it should give the option to open the file with Adobe Digital Editions. If the firewall message still comes up then I'm afraid something is blocking it on your end.
If the above "Open" download method works but you then still get an error message it could possibly be that you have accidentally created a new Adobe ID when setting up on the new computer, rather than signing in with your old Adobe ID. It would be worth trying the aforementioned download technique again first, but if problems did still persist it would be worth calling Adobe themselves on 0207 365 0735, as they should be able to sort out any account issue.
In response to the first para of Waterstones email I already do what they suggest I do press ‘Open’ not ‘Save’ but I don’t get the open with Adobe Digital Editions (we have installed Adobe Digital Editions on the new computer. Waterstones say we may have ‘accidentally created a new Adobe ID when setting up the new computer’ does that mean that we shouldn’t have installed Adobe Digital Editions on the new computer as it would have already been there? How do I sign in with my old Adobe ID?

Hi all after attampting to get some supoport from adobe by phone.... nice people infurating policys as far as support for digital editions or DRM is conserned... However I got no where with support.
I ended up instaling Digital editions on my desktop PC and going through the motions of registering and borrowing a book then returning it. Then I trying on my iPad, Bluefire worked, Over drive did not so I completely removed Overdrive and reinstalled and re registered. all working now.
Maybe some one at adobe did something. Maybe the install of the adobe DE client on a PC corrected what ever was out of wack with my account. Mayby the server that my account lives on did a scan disk and corrected a bad clustrer.
What ever happend My account is actiove and working again. hope this helps others.

    >2) Convert the STRING format to XSTRING format by using the FM SCMS_STRING_TO_XSTRING.
Actually you should use CL_BCS_CONVERT=>STRING_TO_XSTRING now.
    >3) Use the method COMPRESS_BINARY of class CL_ABAP_GZIP to compress the XSTRING file.
You probably want to use CL_ABAP_ZIP instead of CL_ABAP_GZIP.  CL_ABAP_GZIP only does compression, which is fine for storing a single packet of data in the database.  However CL_ABAP_ZIP is better suited for mult-part zip (multiple inner files).
    >4) Use the method SEND_WEB_MAIL of class CL_HRRCF_SERVICES_MAIL to mail across the zipped contents.
This seems to be an HR specific class. Better to use the cross application, NetWeaver provided functionality for sending mail - CL_BCS.

  • Using Pages to create epub file??

  • Creating ePub file in Unstructured FrameMaker 10-RoboHelp 9.

    Hello,
I've created a book in FrameMaker, linked it to a project in RoboHelp and generated an ePub file. I can view the file in Adobe Digital Editions, but cannot load it to an iPad and view.
There are some formatting issues that I need to work on (bullets spacing), but the results appear to be fine.
I ran the file though a epub validator online and see that I have several errors:
-length of the first filename in archive must be 8, but was 9.
-character content of element dc:identifier invalid, must be a string with length at least 1
    -element spine incomplete
    -element navMap incomplete
Can you suggest a way for me to generate ePub files that can be viewed using an iPad (and possibly other devices)?
I've read posts online and viewed videos, but to date, nothing has helped me work through these issues.
    Any guidance would be appreciated.
    m.e.

I just created a project using RH samples, generated the ePUB file and had
the developer load it on the iPad successfully. Obviously, my project is
defective. I'm trying to detect where in the process I made a mistake. The
FrameMaker file generates. My RH file is simple without many settings. I
didn't have any problems linking the FrameMaker files to the RH project.
Generating the ePUB file was successful.
Are there any specific settings in RH that I need to use to generate a
    basic (no formatting) ePUB file?
