  • Restore from Time Machine causes many duplicates in iPhoto '11

My MacBook Pro died (corrosion from salt air!). I got a new one (same model) and used Migration Assistant to restore files from Time Machine to the new MacBook Pro.
Now many of my photos are duplicates or triplicates! Each duplicate or triplicate has a different file name/extension. Many appear to be the original photos (not rotated, not color-corrected) and many just duplicates of the file with the extension "_1" added.
How did this happen, and what can I do short of looking at each photo and deleting the unneeded copies?

    Try this:
1 - go to your Pictures folder and select the library package.
    2 - enter Time Machine.
3 - go to a date and select the iPhoto library package.
4 - click on the Restore button.
5 - when given the option select "Replace".
6 - launch iPhoto and check to see if it's a good library.

  • I have many duplicates of my pictures on iPhoto there an easy way to delete these?

I have many duplicates of my pictures on iphoto Is there an easy way to delete these, 23,000 pictures would take years to go through.

Where are you seeing these duplicates?  In the iPhoto window or via the Finder?  If it's the Finder then you don't have true duplicates.  Each photo in iPhoto will have a minimum of two copies often three.  Then there will be additional faces images for each photo.
If you truly seeing duplicates while viewing in the iPhoto window there are two apps, actually one app and one Applescript script, for finding and removing duplicate photos from iPhoto. They are:
    Duplicate Annihilator
    iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates
However, do not ever remove files from iPhoto using the Finder.  That will corrupt the library.

  • How do i find my original imovie event files. i have a lot of thumbnails, cache .mov, .mov. my events have many duplicates and i want to make space so how do i know which one is the original so i can transfer them to a usb and trash the rest? please help!

i need to delete the extra files but i want to know how to find my original ones.... i am going crazy i dont know why i have sooo many duplicates of my events....

Final Cut is a separate, higher end video editor.  The pro version of iMovie.
Give iPhoto a look at for creating the slideshow.  It's easy to assemble the photos in an album in iPhoto, put them in the order you want and then make a slideshow of them.  You can select from various themes and transitions between slides and add music from your iTunes library.
When you have the slidshow as you want use the Export button at the bottom of the iPhoto window and export with Size = Medium or Large.
Save the resulting Quicktime movie file in your Movies folder.
Next, open iDVD, choose your theme and drag the QT movie file into the menu window being careful to avoid any drop zones.
Then follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.
The reason I suggest iPhoto is that I find it much easier to use than iMovie (except for the older iMovie 6 HD version).  Personal preferences showing here.

  • Duplicates in iphoto

What is the best wat to get rid of duplicates in iphoto. They pictures were imported over as an untitled event and I already had the pictures in my library.

If there are too many to do manually use Duplicate Annihilator.

  • HT1229 Ive move photos but they appear as duplicates in iPhoto.   When you try and open them it says Photo can't be found.  I have thousands.  How do I get rid of these images?

Hi Ive moved photos but they appear as duplicates in iPhoto.   When you try and open them it says Photo can't be found.  I have thousands.  How do I get rid of these images?
Also I have many duplicate photos (from backups)  It would be great to be able to remove all duplicates at one time, like in Itunes.
    Can this be done?

You moved what photos from where and to where?
Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?
A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package
A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

  • How do I remove duplicates in iphoto?

How do I remove duplicates in iphoto?

Whenever I move a photo into  an Album and the same photo already exists there, the second p;hoto is accepted without warning.
    These are not duplicates.
Photos in Albums simply reference the pictures in the Library. A Photo can be in as many Albums as you like without using any extra disk space,a nd it can be used in an Album as many times as you like. There is no duplication involved here.
At heart, an Album is simply an instruction to iPhoto: Show this bunch of photos together in this order.

  • Duplicates in iphoto from syncs gone wrong ( will this idea work to fix it?

Hello all, i have recently come back from a month of traveling the US in which i took about 2,000 photos on my iphone, so when i got back home i synced my iphone up to my imac, and during the sync process i launched iphoto and began importing the 2,000 photos. Well the first sync attempt froze, so i pulled the USB out of the phone and re-synced, and that froze, so i tried again this time successfuly importing the pics into iphoto, neatly organized by time-stamped events from 10/22/09-11/20/09. Anyway after the 3rd sync, i realized that the first 2 botched attempts actually imported some of the photos on each attempt but incorrectly time-stamping them to putting them into the July 09' event for some reason (first attempt), and creating a new event incorrectly time-stamped as the day of the import (2nd attempt). Anyway what this means is i have many duplicates and triplicates of most of those 2000 photos, its a mess.
So having said that, i should note that i have never deleted any photos out of my iphone, i have every single photo i have ever taken still in my iphone camera roll, 3,700 to be axact. I have since taken the time to hand select all the photos taken from that trip in iphoto and correcty moving them into the correct time stamped event created from the 3rd succesful import. Rather than carefully guessing which photo is an original and duplicate and risking deleting photos by accident, i had an idea that i hope will work given the fact that i still have all photos still in iphone camera roll, and wanted to get feedback on this before i actually tried doing it,,,,
,,,i was thinking that if i went into iphoto and deleted all the photos and events from right before i left for the trip until now, and then re-synced my iphone to my computer, would iphoto recognize all those photos from that time needed to be re-imported from the camera roll into iphoto again, this time organizing them into their correct dated events? I have a setting for the importing of photos, something about not showing or syncing any photos that have already been imported from camera roll, so by deleting those pics from iphoto, i was thinking that it would detect those photos to not be in iphoto and want to re-import them. So i am taking this extra pre-cautionary step of asking the help forum if this would work or not before just going ahead and doing it. I do not have a digital camera so all my photos in iphoto are from my iphones cameral roll. Thanks for reading this.

ok, so i tried my idea, i went into iphoto and selected all the events that were from the dates corresponding to those photos, and moved them into iphoto trash. Then i synced my phone back up to itunes, and after the sync was complete, i checked in iphoto to see if it would recognize those pics would need to be re-imported back in from my camera roll, and they weren't there in the import window. So either iphoto was not detecting those to be imported because all the photos were still in iphoto even though they were in the trash bin, or iphoto won't detect photos for importing after they've already been imported once despite them being deleted from iphoto after the import. I have an external hard drive with time machine backing my computer up every few hours and i am still a bit nervous to just empty iphoto trash with all those photos in it, so i just restored all the events back into iphoto from the trash bin. I really felt like this should have worked. Can anyone confirm if iphoto does not detect photos for importing off iphone camera more than once if they've since been deleted out of iphoto?

Many  duplicates are in my Photos. Is there a way to get rid of them not deleting one by one or dozen by dozen?

It seems, in old times we could make path to the original file from the IPhoto browser, couldn't we?
There is another question. If I succeed deleting duplicates from the Iphoto library with some third-party program, does it mean that I really free my hard disk of them? Will they disappear from Photos also?

  • I want to use The Duplicate Finder to get rid of duplicates in iphoto. I created a library as a folder on my desktop.  Should I trash the photos in iphoto before I run the duplicate finder?

I want to use The Duplicate Finder to get rid of duplicates in iphoto. I created a library as a folder on my desktop and droped it into Dupe Finder.  Many dupes were found.  Before I have it auto select dupes, should I trash the photos in iphoto?  Or will Dupe Finder do that for me automatically?

1 - if you want to remove duplicates from your iPhoto library you would not be using a copy of it
2 - don't do anything without a good, current backup
3 - reading the Duplicate Finder web site does not tell me tha tit is safe to use on the iPhoto library - i suggest you use one of the known good and tested duplicate eliminations programs - see this discussion for links - https://discussions.apple.com/message/24363132#24363132
4 - One cardinal rule - NEVER make any chnages to the structrure or content of the iPhoto library using any porogram (including the finder) other than iPhoto - the programs listed in the linked discussion use iPhoto to do the deleting

Question:  any recommendations on how to delete (or group to folder to burn) many duplicate photos in iPhoto?   I had considered using  D Annhilator, but I saw several comments re: same to make me rethink this.  I have thousands, literally, duplicates.  It's like they reproduce overnight.  I cannot get a reasonable explanation re: why this is happening.  I thought I would start with "albums" and try to drag those to a burn folder, but that will take a long time. I hate to mess with "library" or "events" at this time.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • What is the best app for identifying and removing duplicates from iPhoto Libraries/Pictures?

I have five iPhoto Libraries (original, default merged, etc.)  I've tried using iPhoto Library Manager, but I seem to be digging a deeper hole.  Also, question about the 15,000 faces:  Are these taking up space on my hard drive?  I gather I cannot easily remove them from libraries.  Taking photos at concerts, sporting events, etc. just creates more faces in iPhoto;  frankly, I could do without ANY FACE DETECTION!

These applications will identify and help remove duplicate photos from an iPhoto Library:
    iPhoto Library Manager - $29.95
Duplicate Annihilator - $7.95 - only app able to detect duplicate thumbnail files or faces files when an iPhoto 8 or earlier library has been imported into another.
PhotoSweeper - $9.95 - This app can search by comparing the image's bitmaps or histograms thus finding duplicates with different file names and dates.
DeCloner - $19.95 - can find duplicates in iPhoto Libraries or in folders on the HD.
DupliFinder - $7 - shows which events the photos are in.
iPhoto AppleScript to Remove Duplicates - Free
PhotoDedupo - $4.99 (App Store) -  this app has a "similar" search feature which is like PhotoSweeper's bitmap comparison.  It found all duplicates
Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto - free - was able to recognize the duplicated HDR and normal files from an iPhone shooting in HDR
Some users have reported that PhotoSweeper did the best in finding all of the dups in their library: iphoto has duplicated many photos, how...: Apple Support Communities.
If you have an iPhone and have it set to keep the normal photo when shooting HDR photos the two image files that are created will be duplicates in a manner of speaking (same image) but there are only twp apps that detected the iPhone HDR and normal photos as being duplicates:  PhotoSweeper and Duplicate Cleaner for iPhoto.  None of the other apps detected those two files as being duplicates as they look for file name as well as other attributes and the two files from the iPhone have different file names.
iPLM, however, is the best all around iPhoto utility as it can do so much more than just find duplicates.  IMO it's a must have tool if using iPhoto.
