Many kernel panics, possible dead logic board?
I hope someone can help my diagnose my recently quirky iMac G4 1 ghz 17 in flat panel. I currently have a 250 G Seagate hard drive, 1 G memory. It's running Tiger 10.4.11...or attempting to run it.
This computer ran beautifully until several weeks ago when I foolishly attempted to upgrade to Leopard. Only about a third of Leopard got installed when the system froze and crashed. I managed to access the hard drive and did a complete wipe and install of good old Tiger, upgraded to 10.4.10 which ran without a glitch in the past.
However, even after this clean reinstall I continued to get freezes and kernel panics. I repaired all permissions carefully after each upgrade and I ran Disk Utility with no problems detected and no repairs needing to be done. I tried to run Disk Warrior to double check but continued to have system freezes and kernel panics while running Disk Warrior!! The panics were/are intermittent. The computer behaves fine until I've used it for a few hours, then crashes, usually while I am in Safari or iTunes, but occasionally I will get a panic at start up.
I have replaced the hard drive with a brand new one as it was still under warranty. I tested the memory and determined by process of elimination that the stick of RAM on the logic board was not functioning. I replaced that.
So, I have a new hard drive and functional memory and tried a Tiger fresh reinstall yet again today. The system continues to crash episodically...used the computer for a few hours this am before I got a kernel panic. This afternoon it resuscitated itself enough to let me put upgrade 10.4.5 on it and crashed in the middle of the upgrade! Bear in mind the machine's run all these upgrades and functioned fine in the past.
I think I obviously have a hardware problem and since I've recently replaced the hard drive and both memory modules as well as done a fresh reinstall of the OS version this iMac used to run perfectly, I'm thinking I have a logic board issue.
Any opinions or suggestions on how I might get these issues worked out would be very much appreciated!
Thanks for responding. Yes, I've already followed all those suggestions to the letter. Unfortunately I do not have the original Apple Hardware Test disc that came with this computer. I have oredered a copy of Tech Tool Pro and plan to run it but it has yet to arrive.
I let the computer rest overnight and it booted right up and so far no freezes or panics, I've been using it about a half-hour.
Of note, in the kernel panic log folder it says,

I have had continuous problems with my computer. First Apple said it was the Ram...replaced...same thing still happening. So they said oh, must be the logic board...replaced...still happening. Glad I have apple care or i might be more angry. ha.
Basically not sure what is going on.. i have tried to figure out if its a software issue. But it happens at different times. It did seem related to internet use. But turned all that off and worked in photoshop and it happened anyway.
Love the gray screen with all the languages telling me my computer is whack and wants to restart, they must know how i like to brush up on my foreign languages...but i feel that i have learned all i can at this point.
I am copy and pasting my panic log, so anyone who might understand what it is saying. Please shed some light on what i can try to do now.
I use airport to connect to internet. FYI.
Here it is (its long, happens frequently after all)

Run the monitor on an iMac with a dead logic board?
Can a Mac mini be used to run the monitor on an iMac with a dead logic board?
Apparently my iMac was just dirty. When the tech tried to start it today it started even though when the tech tried to start it yesterday nothing happened. So no need to fix anything.
-
Kia ora, hi i have an older (2003 or 4) iMac G5 Power PC 2GHZ - when i turn it on the screen stays dead but the light below screen comes on & i can hear fan (after a few mins on the fan gets noisy).I think the logic board may be dead & can not afford new one & I would like to recover some files & stuff from it and have heard you can recover stuff using a firewire cable so i got cable (firewire 400 to 800) but i am unsure how exactly to do it.
Can anyone out there please explain how i might do it
Thankyou very much
ps my first post on mac forums so hope i got it rightYou can remove the hard drive from the iMac and put it in an external enclosure. You could try using Target Disk Mode to transfer data. Click on the blue link to get the instructions on how to transfer the data.

Please Help: When i try to open logic pro 7, i'm getting what i'm told is a "kernel panic". It hasnt done this before but now it's doing it everytime i try to open logic. I've tried a disk utility and taking out all usb plug ins and restarting but it keeps happening. If i uninstall logic and then re install it - is there a way of keeping my channel strip settings? for example, would they be saved in project folders? Any light shed on this would be greatly appreciated.
Here is something I read from the Yahoo Logic users list. Thought it was helpful and am passing it on.
Robyn
==================================
The error you are describing is a "kernel panic" error. This error occurs for a variety of reasons, but happens most often with volume structure errors, data corruption or permissions issues, driver issues, and/or bad RAM or logic board among other things. The fix below are some steps that I've used in the past to fix this issue (when its been non-hardware related).
NOTE: Be sure to have a backup of all your data before trying any steps below! If you get a kernel panic while your computer is booting and you don't have a backup yet, boot your computer in Target Disk mode (restart your computer and hold the "T" key down) and plug it into another Mac via Firewire. Your main computer will show up as an external hard drive and you can copy/backup your data over from your main computer to the second computer.
1. Again...back up all of your data before trying any of this!
2. Unplug all external peripheral devices (keyboard, mouse, etc)
3. Restart your computer. If you get to a login screen (or if it automatically logs you in), plug your keyboard and mouse back in and download AppleJack http://www.versiont racker.com/ dyn/moreinfo/ macosx/19596
4. Install AppleJack and run it by restarting your computer in Single User mode (hold down command+S keys when restarting.. .when black screen comes up let go of keys and at the prompt type "applejack AUTO restart" .
After your computer restarts, plug in all of your peripherals and see if you continue to get this error.
If you continue to get the error, you may want to try using other utilities like Disk Warrior. Also, to see if you have an issue like Steve's (with the bad RAM), you can use a utility called Tech Tool Deluxe by MicroMat. TTD is a great utility to check for both hardware issues and OS volume structure errors. It is also possible that a peripheral device is causing the kernel panic error (I've seen palm pilots, digital cameras, and other devices that have caused these errors when connected to a Mac). -
First kernel panic - possible to identify the cause?
I experienced my first kernel panic today, well the first that I'm aware of, while working on a piece of music in Logic. I've had this iMac for over 3 years with no similar problems. Logic was busy importing a bounced track in mp3 format and creating an overview when the whole thing froze up and I got the message saying "Your computer needs to be re-started etc." I will say that I'd had a problem recently with drum samples causing Logic to crash but this has just been resolved, to the best of my knowledge. Perhaps it is related though.
I installed ProtectMac Antivirus and ran it after the panic. It did find one trojan in my mailbox, which I deleted. Could that have caused it?
Here is the report that came up just after I re-started the machine. It means nothing to me but perhaps someone knowledgeable about such things could cast their eye over it and tell me if there's any clue here as to what caused the panic. Otherwise, any advice etc. would be welcome.
Thanks.

This appears to be a third-party extension installed by a third-party application you are using. I don't know off hand if the extension is supporting a third-party peripheral.
Another clue to the item is com.paceap.kext.pacesupport.snowleopard. This extension is related to something called "Pace Support" and owned by "paceap."
hopefully these clues can tell you what third-party software is involved. I would then uninstall the software to verify that the kernel panics stop. If a peripheral is involved be sure to disconnect it from the computer.
It's possible the panic was a glitch, so if it isn't recurring you might just forget about it, but report the incident to the third-party developer of the software/hardware. -
Retrieving info off ibook with dead logic board
our ibook's logic board died, so we bought a new macbook. now we are trying to retrieve stuff off the harddrive of the ibook with firewire.
i followed the steps to use target disk mode, but the ibook starts up with a blue screen and a floating firewire symbol, and nothing shows up on the macbook at all.
the repair guy said nothing was wrong with the hard drive, so why can't i access it?
please help!jayson,
The C clamp method works for some units because of an open circuit short on the logic board isolated at the video card chip in the lower left hand corner of the unit, about dead center 1.25 inch approx. away from the left/bottom edge of the iBook. By appling pressure to that area the chip is forced back down into the logic board, closing the circuit, and enabling the computer to startup, use the display and not go into kernal panic from a open circuit short. As far as getting data off of the HD, the local tech claimed my HD was erased and there was nothing viewable on it. I took it home, applied some pressure with my my hand and viola all my data, user account etc like nothing had happened...its sad but I am sitting next to my old computer clamped to the table with some cardboard shims for protection. Guess its a desktop now until I get it fixed! -
Kernel Panic when installing Logic Studio 2 (Logic 9) Upgrade
I just bought the Logic 9 Upgrade from Logic Studio or Logic Pro. I have gotten partially through the install multiple times, but every time, I get a kernel panic about 10% through the installation. I have tried this on two different Mac OS (10.5.8) installations and get the same result.
Does anyone have any suggestions? For a kernel panic only three possible reasons exist:
1. You have a device driver which has a bug and/or so outdated, that it is no longer compatible with the current version of Mac OS X, which you are currently running. For musicians this is typically an audio driver, but can be a special MIDI driver too or a driver for a control surface.
2. A hardware defect, most commonly: cheap memory, which is no reliable. Small applications usually run fine, because they are probably staying within the memory which came with the Mac, but larger ones (Logic, Final Cut, etc) use more memory and will crash if the memory is bad.
3. A programming error or programming oversight in Mac OS X can trigger it. I have not seen any of these in years, but with the very early versions of Mac OS X (10.0, 10.1), they were not uncommon.
As you might have noticed: none of these issues, are within the application itself! -

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
It basically tells you to unplug everything, then plug in just the power cord and keyboard/mouse. I would also add that if you are plugging into a power strip, try going directly to the wall outlet for now.
With no other peripherals plugged in and power coming directly from the outlet, see if it runs more reliably. If the kernel panics stop, try adding one peripheral at a time (while the iMac is still plugged directly to the wall outlet), to see if any one of those was causing some odd conflict. -
3 times dead logic board and now you are on your own.
My G5 is dead for the 3rd time.
1st time it was fixed at CompUSA. They told me that the logic board was under recall and they fixed it. They told me that they had seen a bunch of these. OK.
2nd time logic board. they open it at apple and say, yup popped capacitors. I call apple to complain, they say you are covered.
3rd time logic board, AGAIN. they will fix it this time.... AND YOU WILL ONLY BE COVER FOR 90DAYS AFTER THIS, IT IS OUT OF WARRANTY NOW.
When you buy a computer that has a know problem and you let them try to correct it, is this how you should be treated? Has any one else been treated like this?
what should I do?Hi S SQUAT-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple Discussion boards
Miriam offers sage advice. Contact Apple at the number provided and firmly yet politely state your case.
You may also want to research your local consumer protection laws. Often manufacturer's are given three tries to fix the same problem then must provide you with another solution in either a refund or a replacement unit.
On a related note, I have never been impressed with Apple service as provided by CompUSA. Apple will always try to point you to the nearest facility but you do have the option to choose another service provider.

Kernel Panic when opening Logic Pro 7
Roughly 80% of the time I open Logic 7, I get a Kernel Panic. My convertor is a Motu 828 Mark II, & my midi interface is an Edirol UM-1SX. Both are updated. I've had this computer 3 months now, & have had 2 security updates (one proposed solution to the Panics).
When the convertor's Firewire is disconnected, I still receive Panics. Logic aside, the Motu acts perfectly as my core-audio (using iTunes & such). Once Logic does open, it works fine.
Updates aside, both Apple Care Support & a Genius Bar visit w/an 8 hour diagnostic test revealled no hardware issues. I've erased and reinstalled my operating system as well in hopes of a remedy.
Could this be a Logic software issue?
Any advice and ideas are greatly appreciated.
Truly,
DonnyKPs are virtually always caused by hardware or drivers. Did you try de-installing the MOTU driver then re-installing it?
Is the MOTU driver the only audio driver you have installed on your system ? There aren't any other audio, or MIDI, drivers hanging around from hardware you have had installed before, are there ? -
Freezing, Panics, and a Logic Board error
Okay, I have a PowerMac G4 Gigabit Ethernet, and it's been crashing, giving me kernal panics, and today, toasted my main hard drive. It's running on:
1.2GHz Sonnet G4 upgrade
1.5GB Ram (2x256 and 2x512)
Radeon 9800 128MB
2x20GB hard drives RAID striped
18GB spare
combo drive
2x120GB external firewire drives
I can give more details if needed, but basically, if I watch TV resolution video with VLC media player it will crash after 25 minutes or so,if I run the iTunes visualizer for 15 mintues it will crash, if I play World of Warcraft for about 30 minutes it will crash, actually, if I run any graphically intensive game it crashes. Then today I ran the Apple update for the JSE (or whatever) and 10.4.6, then when I rebooted, it gave me a kernal panic, where the first line said something about not having the driver for "Powermac G4 3,3". Then I run Apple hardware test 1.0.1, I ran that 5 times, and the first time, I got the error "scc /3/7" every time after that I got "scc /1/5" all on the logic board, and it wouldn't test pass that. I do have the machine running but since I left my system disc at my parents', I'm booting it from another machine in target disk mode that has 10.3.9 (option-boot saved my butt, kinda). Last but not least, I cannot access my main drive (the 2x20GB RAID), and I'm hoping someone has a way to get to it, but every time I start, it tells me that I've connected a disk that is not recognized my Mac OS. If the drives are gone, I'll have to deal with it, but I can't have my machine freezing on me like this, and any help is much appreciated
Gigabit Ethernet Powermac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.9)Well after 5 tests and every time having the logic board fail I am willing to bet that the logic board IS the probable cause.
What I would do is disconnect all the drives (minus the x2 20gig raid) and get the data off each one. If that other machine you are booting up in targeted disk mode has at least 1 open ATA66 slot free then you can simply change the jumper settings on each drive and get the data off. This will also give you a chance to test and verify each disk.
If the other Mac you are using targeted disk mode on is a laptop then you could go the slower rout of taking turns with making each drive the master drive on the internal ATA66 buss that your machine started with. That way each time you start up with targeted disk mode you can get the data off that drive.
Once all your data is off I would consider the cost for a replacement board (probably $3-500 is my guess) vs the cost of getting a new machine or simply a used newer machine (like a dual 1.2Ghz G4 or something allong those lines). The drives will work in the newer machine so there would be no costs in getting new drives compatible with the system. That is my thoughts. -
Powerbook 17" G4 1.67ghz - dead logic board, or dead DC board?
Hi there,
I have recently come in to the possession of a Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz, given to me by a friend in an attempt to fix it. The problem is simple: it won’t turn on! when plugged into the power cord, it makes the green illuminated rim on the flex turn off. I then have to turn the power supply off and on again to get it to work on other machines. I have been told it could be a DC board issue, or it could be logic board... If anyone could shed any light on the issue I would be grateful... Would prefer not to have to splash out on a new logic board!
Chris
Powerbook G4 17" 1.67ghz Mac OS X (10.4.8)
iBook G3 500 Mac OS X (10.4.3)I went through this last year.
Power's up - but the light around the power plug flickers green all the time - even when charging.
Won't charge when it's in sleep or turned off.
Thought DC board - logically - but nope logic board.
Then found out bluetooth wasn't working either.
Well I thought 800USD is a lot to pay to fix those 2 things - so just living with it now.
So even if it appears to be DC board - it might not be....
hope this info somehow helps you out
cheers

Recurring kernel panic - possible 8800GT hang?
Hope you can help me out. I think I have a problem with the 8800GT in my macpro3.1. I got the machine as a refurb/off-lease about a month ago. All checked out fine in TechTool 6, and I've been using it with no problems.
Two days ago started having flickering screen...horizontal blanking-out...then kernel panic, then stuck at grey screen. Happened in both OS 10.6.8 and 10.8.3, and also after starting up with TechTool (OS 6.7). I don't have an AHT disc, but was able to run the video memory test in TechTool, which passed, before it crashed.
If the card was overheating would that explain being able to start-up, run for a bit, then crash, and not start-up again?
Long shot...the machine came without the stock Apple power cord, just an 18awg power cord, but it should handle up to 9 amps?
Managed to access the KP log - attached. Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
