Many of my applications won't run under Lion.

I used to run Tiger on a G4 Powerbook and a G4 Quicksilver.  Now I have a new iMac running Lion but it does not support my PowerPC apps such as Toast or Popcorn.  Also the drivers for many devices such as my printer, scanners and external LaCie HD aren't supported.  Replacing everything is going to be expensive - any suggestions for workarounds?  I'd also like to hear of any good DVD burning/copying applications that will run under Lion other than Roxio's.

You mentioned LaCie external hard drives - there is no driver needed for an external HD. Plug it in. If it is formatted correctly (which means it needs to be Mac OS extended (Journaled) and GUID Partition scheme (under Options) in order to be bootable on an Intel), there is nothing else you need. You may need to reformat to GUID if you're coming from a PPC. Note: back up your data first because the drive will be wiped,
I've used Toast and updated it - they usually have special update offers if you're coming from an earlier version. As for your printer and other hardware - if it is old but still works, you could keep using it with your old Mac (transfer whatever you want to print over to the old Mac and print from there) or start upgrading.

  • What windows applications won't run on a mac?

I'm about to go from PC to Mac and would like to get an understanding of what common applications won't run on a Mac.  I'm not interested in things like MS Office and such which I know have Apple version, but I'm interested in Adobe Acrobat, Flash Player, Others such as Garmin, eBay Turbo Lister, Nikon View, etc.  Seems to me I've heard that Flash files won't work on Apple Products.  Are there apps that will allow some of these to run?
I don't think I have too many to worry about but I'd appreciate hearing what challenges others have had and what to expect in general.

All Office and Adobe products available on both platforms. Flash works fine on a Mac, just not on iDevices like iPads or iPhones.
Others that you've listed just find out if the developers have a Mac version. Do some research.

  • Certain applications won't run

Certain applications won't run. Mail, Safari (I'm sending this with Firefox), and now Installer. The disc now verifies although I had to repair the disc earlier. This started when trash-emptying wouldn't complete. Disc Utility from the Tiger install disc found what it called a minor error - a file that was a little too big (don't remember the file) and free space a little too small. Here's the crash log when I try to run the 10.4.10 PPC combo update - after a hint I got in another thread about a problem like this. I believe the same file is mentioned for any of the apps that won't run. If you have any ideas how I should proceed, please let me know. Thanks, Joe

How bad is it to try to install the combo update from the Terminal? Thanks, Joe
    Well, it's this bad:
First off, a disclaimer. I didn't think of this, and I've not tried it from the DVD, though I did check the commands on a booted system. But it looks like it should work to me.
Okay, to use Terminal on the DVD, do this:
First, open up the disk image for the updater and copy the ".pkg" or ".mpkg" file onto your desktop, since that's an easy place to find it. Eject the disk image and make sure the package file stays on the desktop. Make a note of the package's exact name, including capitalization. You'll need it later. Now, open the Terminal on your Mac and type the following:
    cd ~/Desktop; pwd
Write this path down somewhere, and keep in mind that case counts. It'll be something like "/Users/username/Desktop".
Now, take a look at the name of your hard drive. It's most likely something like "Macintosh HD". The main thing is to note any spaces in the name and note the name. I'm not sure whether auto-complete, and all the other good stuff, works in the Terminal on the DVD, so it's best to write these things down.
Now, boot from the Tiger Installer DVD and open up the Terminal app from the "Utilities" menu. Now, you need to construct a command to open up the installer package for the update package. Here's how it should look (without customization):
    "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/usr/bin/open" -a /Applications/Utilities/Installer.app "/Volumes/Macintosh HD/Users/username/Desktop/MacOSXUpdCombo10.4.10PPC.pkg"
A couple of things to note: first, the quotes around the first part are necessary because of the space in "Macintosh HD", same with the last part. Also, it's possible that the installer will open up the OS X installer package from the DVD as well. Just be really sure you're installing the update and not the full OS. Also, make sure you customize the username in the last part, just before "Desktop".
Finally, if you've installed any updates after the 10.4.10 update (especially security updates), it's possible that the problem with the WebKit will not be fixed, since the 10.4.10 combo installer may not install the older version of the WebKit over the newer one. In that case, you might have to do the other updates that came after 10.4.10 to eventually get back to where you should be. And all this might be in vain if some other critical file is damaged, but hasn't been updated since 10.4.0.
    charlie
P.S. -- Like I said before, I haven't tried this, and didn't even think of it. I found the general procedure at, of all places, the Washington Post web site in the comments to a blog entry. Look down toward the bottom.

  • InDesign CS4 will not run under Lion

I have InDesign CS4 and Design Suite CS3. All my other CS3 apps run under Lion. The Upgrade to Lion failed leaving my internal unbootable, so I installed and migrated to an external drive. But after the upgrade to Lion all of the other CS 3 aps run, IDCS4 will not run. I get the following message:
Adobe InDesign is missing required system fonts or CMap files. Please reinstall InDesign.

There is a very long list of incompatibilities with Lion:

I'm sure there are many more that are unknown.
FWIW, I highly recommend sticking with Snow Leopard for now and when you do upgrade, do so as a clean install.

  • Powerpc won't run in Lion

Just installed Lion, all straight forward but found my account program wont run because it needs 'Rosetta', any ideas on what I can do.

    TLP wrote:
Is it possible to duel boot and have snow leopard and Lion on the same computer?
Yes, but you have to partition your hard drive, which usually means erasing whatever you have.  So backup, backup, backup.
Or use a second hard drive.  Either external or internal, if your iMac can take one.  Install Snow Leopard on one drive and Lion on the other drive.  Which ever version of OSX you'll be using the most, that is what I recommend you install to the internal drive.
Preferably, I'd recommend installing Snow Leopard to the external hard drive and making it only to run the accounting program (and whatever else won't run on Lion.)  That way if the program is updated to work with Lion, you won't have to reinstall Lion on your internal hard drive when you're ready to move past Snow Leopard.

  • Itouch downloaded applications won't run

I have an Itouch with the 2.1 operating system. I got it a month ago and everything ran fine. I downloaded several free applications on there and now suddenly, none of them work. Everything else works, its just when I try to run the applications, they start and just stop. They say they are free apps in the Apple store. My first thought was they were demo versions. I'm trying to run Paper Football Lite, Four Free, Astro Tilt, and others. Can anyone help me figure out why they won't run? Everything else runs fine.
    Thanks!

I got an iPOD touch last week and have same problem. About 7 FREE apps, and 1 Paid for now bring up the splash screen and then it goes back to main screen - they just don't run. My touch sync fine with my authorized macintosh using my valid .MAC account, etc... Also, just upgraded the touch to 2.2 and no help.
Here's the strange thing... If I download another application - anything - all the applications start working again. I can't find a rhyme or reason, but after a few days they all stop working. I download another app - and they all work!

I have been using Pages for 1.5 years. I'm using version 4.1 on Mac OS X (10.7.5). Pages won't run, and files not saved as .doc files won't open. • "Peak 5.2" won't run under Mavericks

I've just upgraded to Mavericks and discovered that my pro audio editor Peak LE 5.2 by Bias (company is out of business!) no longer works.  On opening, it gives a dialog box saying "Another copy of this application is already running on this machine. Peak must now quit."  There's nothing to do but click the "OK" button, and indeed it does quit.
I looked for other running apps that might be in conflict, tried rebooting, and I deleted my Java runtime in case that was it - No luck.
    Any ideas?

Just found out from another post that if you disconnect from the internet, it will work.
I tried it, and that solved the problem!

  • Some current apps won't run under IOS 4?

    Just got this from RunKeeper
We wanted to reach out and warn you that the RunKeeper Free and RunKeeper Pro apps that you currently have on your phones are not iOS 4 compatible. New versions that are iOS 4 compatible are in the queue awaiting Apple's approval. We don't know if they will get approved before tomorrow (we hope they do), but if not, it should be any day now. In the meantime, if you wish to continue using RunKeeper while you are waiting, hold off on downloading iOS 4 until our next app version gets approved.
Is this going to be a general problem with older apps?

    dlcrouch wrote:

I suspect there are three categories:
    1. Apps which will not run under OS4
    2. Apps which will run under OS4 but not support multitasking
    3. Apps which will run under OS4 and support multitasking
I understand Navigon has a new version in the wings in Cat 3.
Hopefully the iTunes app store will identify those which will not work in OS4. But I suspect we may learn about some the hard way, starting tomorrow.

  • Labview 7.1 won't run under Windows 7

    Hello -
I recently upgraded my system to Windows 7 (Ultimate, x64).  Unfortunately, when I now attempt to run Labview 7.1 on this machine I get an error saying the following:
The requested feature is unavailable on "localhost".
I am not sure of where to go from here.  The built in compatibility mode (running it as if it were XP SP3, for example) produces the same result.  Searching on this forum I found someone with the same message after installation errors (dealing with registry privileges) but I saw no such errors during what was an uneventful, clean install.  One thing I am wondering about (although it does not seem to be an issue with any other program that I have) is I happened to notice that Windows 7 seemingly makes all subdirectories under "Program Files" (Program Files (x86) in this case) read-only.  I turned this off for the National Instruments subdirectory and all of its subdirectories, with no change.  I also attempted the "fix" for registry privileges (in the aforementioned post on here) with no luck.
Has anyone else seen this?  It'd be nice if it gave me a more detailed message but this seems to be all of the information available with this error.
    Thanks,
    Brett

Hmm, you've just about stumped me.  If this is on a laptop, please try disabling the WIFI card so only one network adapter is present (there are activation issues in later versions related to this).  Are you using the default LabVIEW.INI file or are you migrating your settings from a previous install?
Also, do you have any drivers installed?  If so, from what Driver CD are you installing them from (month/year)?
The system I tested LV 7.1 on is a virtual machine with Windows 7 Professional x64.  I'm not sure I know many more "tricks" to try in order to get this to work, but I am not sure this is even an issue related to Windows 7.  The other thread documents this issue on a Windows 2000 system.  Once engaged by one of the NI Applications Engineers, you might try installing LabVIEW 7.1 from another copy of the distribution/installer.

  • HT3421 Battery Update 1.4 won't run under 10.6.8?

Getting the 'Service Battery' warning under the battery menu, noticed some have mentioned the need to run Battery Update 1.4 but when I try to I get an error that I need Leopard 10.5.6 or better. Guess SL 10.6.8 doesn't qualify as 'better'?
FWIW: CoconutBattery reports: "MacBook 4,1 43 months old w/ 263 loadcycles with max 22% capacity"

I also updated to SnowLeopard directly when it came out, and shortly afterwards lost my power adapter so didn't use my Mac for two weeks.
Today found the power adapter again (thank god, 'cause those things are expensive) and now my Macbook won't charge! I found the Battery Update 1.4 might help me but that one isn't working on systems running SnowLeopard...
What to do? I know since recently (There was a critical story in my local newspaper about failing Macbook batteries) that a lot of batteries of the late 2008 series plastic Macbook are failing on people and that you can only charge one about 300 times. That sounds so weird to me because that would mean I'll have to spend €139,- every year on a new battery!!! That would make my Macbook cost a grand total of more than €1500,- if i'd use it for about 4 years.. Now that *****! (excuse my language but I'm truly shocked!)

  • Application won't run if ressource .txt are included after deployment

I finished a project that plays .wav and .mp3 files as a SoundBox. In JDev, everything works perfectly. Once deployed, I can get the .jar to run if the 2 main .txt are not present in the .jar directory (the application uses them to load everything) but of course the window is empty. If I copy the 2 .txt in the same directory as my .jar, the .jar simply won't start. (or maybe it does and closes right away, I don't know)
I use the mp3spi1.9.5 library to read MP3 but even when I only include the .txt for .wav files, it still won't open. I made sure all the resources I need for this application are present in the right directory.
It seems like the application cannot read the .txt file once deployed. (using BufferedReader).
Any ideas as to what is provoking this and how to fix it?
    Thanks

  • DAQ program compiled under Win2k won't run under Win 95.

When I compile a LabView 5.1.1 vi program that uses lvdaq.dll on my Windows 2000 workstation, that same program will not run on a Windows 95 notebook computer. Error code 21 (external subroutine could not be found) is reported for all standard DAQ vi's calling functions within lvdaq.dll even though the dll can be found in the program directory, the system directory, the vi.lib\daq directory, and via the system path. The same program compiled on a Windows 95 workstation runs on the Windows 95 notebook computer just fine. Why is lvdaq.dll not found when the program is compiled under Windows 2000? Do I need the same version of NI-DAQ on both computers?

    Larry;
If you are doing NI-DAQ function calls on your VI you need to match the NI-DAQ version on both machines, otherwise, depending on what functions you are calling and what are the NI-DAQ versions, you might get some errors. Just for future reference, this procedure is good for NI-VISA (if you are using VISA VIs) and NI-488.2 (if you are using GPIB boards) as well.
