Many original dates of photos are missing or wrong

I have had a lot of issues with my iPhoto program. After many trips to the Genius Bar and numerous hours with phone techs, I am now rebuilding my library, starting with a backup of it from before the corruption. When I "get info" of a picture, I notice the original date the picture was taken (most important for me), is not there or is wrong.  When I check package contents of my iPhoto library, the originals show up, but most (not all) of the dates are wrong.  Can anyone tell me how or where I might find the original dates?

Download and place this app in the Dock:   EXIF Viewer for Mac OS X. Then drag some of the problem photos original files from the iPhoto library package onto the app in the Dock.  You'll get this window where you can check the Image Generated date:
If it's the same as what iPhoto is showing then the file is incorrect.  The date can be corrected in iPhoto with the Photos ➙ Adjust Date and Time menu option:

  • In the last 36 hours my photos have jumbled within various albums. Random photos have attached at the end of an unrelated album, old photos have appeared again on Recently Added, some photos are missing but still on "collections". No date order

Within the last 36 hours my photo albums have turned into a real jumbled mess. Random photos have appeared at the bottom of my Recently Added album. In most cases it's a copy of a photo that was taken months or years ago so now it appears twice.. 200 random photos have appeared in an unrelated album.  Some photos are missing completely. The date order is correct in some places and then it goes back and forth over the months and years. The "collections" appears to be okay.  This morning when I went into the photo app About 50 photos that were permanently deleted 3 months ago reappeared on the Recently Added Album which  I deleted again.  if  I delete these irreplaceable photos from the unwanted album it will delete the photo completely. Help please - this is so annoying and frustrating. I hate to think when I turn the iPad on tmoor row what else will have changed .

    Quick Update:
I usually have my Mac laptop up with Messages running on it.  As you know, it will receive the same messages you send/receive on your iPhone.  I thought all my old photos would be there too, but they have all disappeared as well except for the last few.
Messages is supposed to archive all old photos to  a directory called ~/Library/Messages/Attachments.  On my mac, this was a 0 byte file that was created back in Jan 2014.  As a result, none of the old photos got saved on my Messages app either.  I looked at a Time Machine Backup and it has been the case since September (no earlier backups available).  So, it's unclear how long this issue has been going on for my Messages app and how related it is to my iPhone problem.
In any case, if any of you use Messages, you may be able to recover your photos in that directory provided it didn't get trashed like mine did.  I moved the file and created a new Attachments directory.  Upon relaunch, Messages started properly storing new photos in there again.
Either there was a really terrible bug in the Apple software or something malicious has happened.
P.S.  I'm running OS 10.9.5 Mavericks.   There is a thread of people with this problem on Yosemite here:
No pictures are shown in Message om Mac
This seems like a pretty seriously terrible bug.  I will be talking again to AppleCare on Wednesday and I hope they can escalate this.

  • Original date on photos

    Hello,
I use Photoshop Elements to edit photos. Even after editing with P.E. I can see the original date the photo was taken (as well as the modified date).
When I import into iPhoto, I get a brand new date (the date of import) and cannot see the original date.
Is this normal? Is there a workaround? I hate going back into PE to see the original date...especially when I'm working with a lot of photos and making albums, etc.
Thanks for your help and Happy Holidays!

    FYI:
Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • All my photos are missing in iphoto 4.0.3.

All the photos are missing in my iphoto 4.0.3. The files are on the side under source but the screen also stays blank in every file. What to do?

I had a similar situation with some of my photos, not all of them. During help from a genius at Apple an error occurred and we feared I might have lost my photos. When the problem was "fixed", the photos showed up as being taken the same day and no longer in the original order. In addition numerous photos were gone.
I'm told the photos still exist on the HDD but just can't be found by iPhoto. If this is the case how do I find them? Would I be able to do a search for all jpg files to do this?
On a side note: I've backed up my HDD to an external drive and I'm about to erase my HDD and update Panther to Tiger. When I move the user files back to the HDD I plan on consolidating them into one user.
    Any insight is most appreciated.

  • All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

All my old photos are missing from iPhoto on my Mac- any one have ideas on how to retrieve?

Do you have a Time Machine backup or any backup of your Mac? Then you could try to restore from the backup.
If your photos are very important documents, you could also try data recovery software. Usually the trial versions are free, but if you want to safe the recovery photos you have to pay.  Disk Drill works well to recover jPEG photos, see:  http://www.cleverfiles.com/
It is still not obvious what might have happened to your iPhoto Library.  Have you searched for different iPhoto Libraries?
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

Nevermind. I just renamed the folder on my mac and synced it again and everything is now in its proper place.

  • Iphone photos are missing

I noticed incoming calls do not have contact photos showing.  Now all the contact photos are missing.  This is very frustrating -- and I'm not sure how to recover.  Please help!

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
Photos from back up will be added back once the restore process has completed, give it some time.
Meantime, don't be deleting your old back up.

  • My iphoto photos are missing, what should i do?

    hi
my iphoto photos are missing, what should i do?
    can anyone help me please.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • Photos are Missing messages Problem constantly showing up

I screwed up. I had iPhoto link to my photos on my hard drive rather then importing/embedding them into the iPhoto library but then I believe I reorganized all my original folders (merging, file renaming etc.). So that is one reason I am getting missing photo messages. I thought iPhoto would automatically track the originals but that was probably a wrong assumption.
Not sure how to find/mark which photos are all missing and reconnect them to where they are located now and how to fix it so I don't get the messages. I have to go through around 300 "Can't Find Photo dialogs" if I accidently click on a orphaned photo (thumbnail without a photo).
I have made some changes to some photos in iPhoto and I would prefer not to lose those changes. I don't want to lose my Current Albums and Books and Slideshows etc. But I'm guessing I need to backup and re-import all my photos again in a new library but that cause me to lose my meta-data (Albums, Phtot Changes, Slideshows etc.)
I tried rebuilding the library but it still prompted me with the "Can't Find Photo Questions" and never really solved the problem.
The reason I didn't embed was I wanted other application to be able access my photos without having to go through the trouble of exporting them first, and also to save space. But I saw a 1TB drive for $370 so maybe space shouldn't be the issue anymore and I have iPhoto Library Manager so there should be no problem with having my library on a different drive then the pictures folder on the HD.
It would be sure nice if most Apple applications (Final Cut Studio for example)could select from the iPhoto or Arpeture (I was thinking of buying) library.
Anyway any suggestion on how to fix my orphaned photos without losing all my changes?
    Dave

I just noticed it as well out of the blue. Could have sworn that it always worked and suddenly stopped without any updates or anything.
The "right click-paste" function of a jpeg is not working in apple mail. You can drag and drop a picture into the email, or "right click-copy image" and "command -v" it into the body of the email and see the picture but "right click-paste" only produces the "box with the blue question mark". This is only happening in mail as far as I know, in .pages "right click-paste" works just fine.

  • My latest import photos are missing from my iphoto library but still on my ipad, how do I get them back into iphotos. I very frustrated because i just imported them from my camera and have not been able to go thru and edit the ones I want. Help please

I recently imported pictures from my camera to iphoto. I also synced my ipad. In less than 24 hours my photos are now missing from iphoto even after trying to sync my ipad again. These pictures are from a very special occasion and I did not even get time to edit. Someone help please

    -Background-
My issue, which I resolved and may help you was the following:
I have an IPAD 3. I took over 5 GB of pictures on a third party camera. The car was full so I imported those pictures to my IPAD 3 and deleted them from the SD card. While on IOS 5.x, the photos on the IPAD were there under last imported.
Over the last few days, I upgraded to IOS 6. No issues.
Then, my family wanted to see the pictures from the trip. I went to the IPAD and could not find the photos. It listed 40 photos only. The last imported was there, but listed as empty. When I went into the settings>usage, it listed 5GB + of photos in the photos area. I was confused. I plugged my IPAD into ITUNES, first thinking I would get a backup asap (icloud was full after importing the photos). Then I though I would downgrade to IOS 5.
Also, itunes listed that I had 40 photos only, but 5GB of OTHER data. I was convinced the data was not lost. When I tried to browse the IPAD 3 using windows browser, the photos where NOT in the DCIM folder, so I was not able to simply "FIND" the photos and copy them to my PC.
    -SOLUTION-
I downloaded third party software onto my PC called "http://www.i-funbox.com/" I fun box. I had no idea if this would work, but other forums with other issues called out similar products for iphone issues.
When I installed the program, which was free, and so far free of malware, I started  to explore my IPAD file system.I found my photos, under IPAD>RAW file system>DCIM>100IMPRT.
    -ROOT CAUSE-
I suspect when I upgraded to IOS 6, apple fails to register the IMPORT folder of photos as such, photos. So the file system in IOS looses sight of what is inside the last imported folder. Essentially removing them from applications such as "Photos". Why windows does not seem them, is beyond me. But the program I found did see them in raw format, and I was able to COPY them to my PC. Then I deleted them from the IPAD, because I had no other way of managing this folder in IPAD, and it was using a lot of space.

    Post a screenshot of:
    1. Your Lightroom folder & photos that are missing.
    2. Your hard drive where you expected the photos to be, or where the photos actually are.
    3. The UI box where you were unable to "find the folder".
    utahjake wrote:

What is the drive letter? has it changed since photos were imported? (this is essentially the first question dj_paige asked in the first post, and it still hasn't been answered).
You may not need to answer all the other questions, if you answer this one first.
To be clear: if you're going to store photos on an external drive, in Windows, you MUST "fix" the external drive letter - ask if you don't know how to do that (but first, we need to know what the drive letter is now, and/or what it should be..).
We need to know EXACTLY what's going on, with real names and specific information - what you saw, what you typed, what you clicked.. - make a video if you can..
At this point, we (me anyway) are assuming Lr is functioning properly, there is nothing wrong with your catalog, and you've just goofed or gotten confused somehow. That may not be true, it's just that we have no way of knowing, yet.

  • No "original date" in photos

I imported 337 images to iPhoto from a USB card reader and all images were placed in one event. Import was done automatically (ie iPhoto opened when the memory card was connected to the USB port).
Looking at "Extended Photo Info" I see the images don't have "Original Date". They all have "Modified Date" of today (some 10 minutes before the "Imported date").
When I look at the memory card via iPhoto (under "Devices") I see the images also don't have original date, but the "Modified date" does match the date when the images were actually taken.
Looking at the memory card via the finder, I see the files have a valid "created" and "modified" dates.
Is there a way to import the images into iPhoto from the card reader while retaining their original dates?

Examine the files with an app like EXIFViewer. These are the dates that iPhoto works from.
Looking at the memory card via the finder, I see the files have a valid "created" and "modified" dates.
Finder data is file data. As you copy and move files this can change. Hence, photo apps use the Exif to track the time of the Photo.

  • Itune version 5.1.1, many contacts in the phone are missing,

I justed updated my iphone4 with the latest itune version 5.1.1.
Now, I found many of the contacts in my phone are missing...
Most of the remaining contacts only reflect the number, name does not appear.
    How to solve this?

Since there are not C++ class libraries provided for data acquisition (DAQ) yet, you must use one of the previously available methods for programming DAQ in Visual C++. There are two optional Application Programmer Interfaces (APIs) available in Visual C++: the DAQ C API, and the ActiveX DAQ controls. The DAQ C API is normally the best choice for data acquisition in Visual C++ since it uses C data types and is programmed in a standard C style. The ActiveX controls use data types that are not native to C++ like Variants and Safearrays and they are programmed through an ActiveX style of programming. The Tools for Visual C++ do provide tools that make both of these APIs easier to use through the provided data type classes.
Install NI-DAQ help for C++ to see examples for the DAQ C
API, and install ComponentWorks' help for C++ to see the ActiveX DAQ Controls. There are examples of both on the web in the NI Developer Zone.
Note: As of version 3.0 of ComponentWorks, this software is part of a package called Measurement Studio which also includes LabWindows/CVI and Tools for Visual C++. For this version you should use the Tools for Visual C++ and calls to DAQ functions that are in your DAQ User Manual

  • My latest photos are missing, however they are not uploading into the PhotoStream.. (very slowly), they are not in the last import or in events... where are they ?

I uploaded around 200 photos into iphoto, I worked on these photos breifly, cropping and deleting some, then iphoto crashed.. and when I relaunched it the photos were missing from both the events section and the last import showed nothing.  I also looked in the Trash for the deleted photos, and that was empty too..
Now the photos are reappearing in PhotoSteam, all be it very slowly... I cant seem to find the orginals anywhere... I have tried to reoganise the events by ascending and descending to see if they are hiding... but I am unable to see any evidence of them.
Can anyone help.  My computer is about 1 week old, however I did take all the photos from my Mac Notebook, which I think has taken some dodge

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. (In early versions of Library Manager it's the File -> Rebuild command. In later versions it's under the Library menu.)
This will create an entirely new library. It will then copy (or try to) your photos and all the associated metadata and versions to this new Library, and arrange it as close as it can to what you had in the damaged Library. It does this based on information it finds in the iPhoto sharing mechanism - but that means that things not shared won't be there, so no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your events, albums and keywords, faces and places back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
