Many problems. Programs won't mount and fan runs a lot

Ever since I installed my Ipod shuffle I have had all kinds of problems. I doubt that has anything to do with it. Sometimes my computer will go to sleep and the fan will just run like crazy. The computer won't wake up. The only way is to reboot. I also have a problem with programs not opening but in the program bar they have the arrow. Then they won't close unless I reboot. The other problem is that downloaded programs won't mount and therefore won't open. When I double click it says program failed to mount? Any ideas?
Jason

Before doing an Archive and Install as MGW suggested, I would try the following first:
Except for your keyboard & mouse, disconnect all devices from your computer...........
Run disk repair & permissions directly from your Tiger DVD.
I would also suggest that you consider updating your OS & updating and/or downloading anything else your computer needs by using your Software Update control panel.
If you do the above, you will need to repair permissions after each installation.
By any chance do you have DiskWarrior, Techtool Pro or Drive Genius?
"Apple has been no help with anything with this computer. The little ball on the mighty mouse broke after a week of use and they wouldn't do anything about it."
I'm sorry but, I find this hard to believe. Like MGW already stated, Apple should have offered you a replacement as you were entitled to one under your "standard" one year warranty with Apple.

firefox 5 has caused so many problems, I want to uninstall and go back to a previous version. the problem is that one of the issues 5.0 has caused is an error message when I click on "add or remove " on my control panel, so I can't remove Firefox 5. Install Portable Firefox 3.6.x to your hard drive for that one website. It won't affect your current Firefox installation at all. <br />

  • 2G iPod won't mount and CD icon appears?

Hi I have a 20 gig 2G ipod that I got from the battery replacement program 3 years ago. I am unable to sync it with iTunes. When I connect it to my mac it won't mount and the CD icon appears on the iPod screen. When I unplug it the icon is still on the screen after few minutes I get the Cd icon with the check mark, then it returns to normal operation. When I press play the song plays for 20 30 sec. and then it freezes.
How can I reset the iPod?
    Thanks in advance

    Hello!
What kind of iPod do you have? (new one?)
Are you using a mac or a pc?
If your using windows pc, check and see if you have a 6 pin connector (FireWire) if not then thats probably why it is not charging!
If your using a mac then it should charge automatically.
Refer to the online support and type in the search area:
iPod(with dock connector) user's guide (manual)
Refer to page 45 Battery charging!
Let me know if I can help in any other way!

  • How do I repair a damaged dmg that won't mount and Dick Utility can't repair?

Apple Care gave me wrong instructions on how to create a disc image of my internal HD then erased it. Now I have a .dmg that has the same gigs as the HD but won't mount and Disk Utility can't repair. Tried to recover files with Data Rescue 3 but that isn't going so hot. Any suggestions?
    Thank you

The Apple Support Communities are an international user to user technical support forum. As a man from Mexico, Spanish is my native tongue. I do not speak English very well, however, I do write in English with the aid of the Mac OS X spelling and grammar checks. I also live in a culture perhaps very very different from your own. When offering advice in the ASC, my comments are not meant to be anything more than helpful and certainly not to be taken as insults.
I guess that it's a moot point to ask if you didn't test the dmg before you erased the drive. Do you have a Time Machine or other type of backup?
If not, it's a hard lesson to learn, but I would guess that unless you are willing to pay for expensive outside data recovery service, all is lost and you are starting over.

  • 3 tones and fan running

G5Imac had 3 tones and fan running at start up. Now it will start and the fan starts immediatly. Also had a few kernal panics prior. help!

    Hi Miriam ,
Thanks so much for your info on my Imac. I took out the ram and reseated them. I had 256 on top and 512 on bottom,. I removed the completely and put them back in . The problem was sorta solved but now its doing the kernel panic thing again. And once I got a black screen that flashed something re; Darwin? Should I buy a 512 for the top slot? I heard that the top and bottom memory should match. Also thank you for the info on the extension program. It has already been in the shop for the power issue.

will not boot up and fans run at high speed

after much head scratching I ran the hardware test disk from cd. The test showed a memory issue I eliminated the faulty one systematically. So it wasn't a hard drive or software problem in the end it was faulty memory. What was misleading was the computer telling me there was a fault on the hard drive. The machine works fine now. Thanks to people's comments I learned a bit more about the G5 that helped eliminate probable causes

  • Early 2008 MacBookPro keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed

    Hi!
    I wrote from Turkey.
My Early 2008 MacBookPro 2.40 ghz 4 gb Ram OSX Mavericks machine's keyboard backlight off and fans run at high speed; it seems an exact smc resetting problem.
So i tried the 2 ways of SMC restting procedure; both battery you can move and not, but nothings changed on the situation..
On the way for removable battery; nothing changed but on the way for umremovable battery way; keyboard backlight flashes and gone, but fans are at high speed not changed. So nothing changed.
What can i do right now? i'll wait for your advices
    Thanks

Your Mac may need a new PRAM battery.  Once it is over 4 years old, that often is needed.

  • Fan running a lot more

I have a black Macbook with 2.4ghz core 2 duo that I have upgraded to 6gb ram and 640gb hard disk.
Also have upgraded to latest Lion 10.7.  A couple of months ago I installed Parallels v7.0 and Windows XP to do some custom database development, i.e. not a lot of graphics.  When looking at the Activity Monitor, it is always Parallels sucking most of the processor.  For example right now, 55% idle  37% system 8% user.  Fan seems to be running about 1/2 speed, CPU core 1 61c, Core 2 63c.  I am almost always using a second monitor.
I am now noticing that the fan runs a lot more now than it ever has before.  Usually running all the time I have Parallels running, but not at full speed.  I also notice more when watching Hulu natively in Safari, that I didn't notice the fan running before.  The computer is always on a hard flat surface.
Fortunately, everything runs fine all day long at the office and I don't seem to have any problems overheating.  My old Macbook is a little sluggish, but am overall satisfied with the speed.  My question is mainly if I am asking for problems long term running like this?  Should I consider upgrading to a new model?  Is there something that can be cleaned or blown out with air?  I struggle with the thought of spending $1,200 for a new laptop with the same clock rate and smaller hard disk and memory.  Yes, I know the memory is faster, but will the overall performance be that much better?
    Thanks for the opinions.

Im having the same problem as well the fan shuts off for a few then starts right back up i though it was when i ran logic pro that it only did that but now im noticing it happening more often if anyone can help that would be great thanks....

  • Urgent - I think I just lost everything on my MacBook Pro. Hard drive won't mount and booting up shows "no" symbol

My MacBook Pro (13" mid 2010, Yosemite) doesn't feel like booting up. It gives me the no symbol after the progress bar is about 1/4 of the way through.
Additionally, it won't mount in the Recovery HD. It shows up as disk0s6 and clicking Mount does nothing. Can't seem to mount it in the Terminal either.
The disk partition is encrypted, so unfortunately I can't pull the hard drive out of my MBP and pull the stuff off it with my PC.
I tried First Aid - "no problems found" (such LIES!)
    I tried PRAM - didn't work
I tried Verbose Mode - went fine for the first minute, then hung for a while before returning to the "No" screen and in the bottom right corner "Still waiting for root drive".
    I tried SMC - didn't work
Most recently I did install rEFInd - which is a boot manager. I was afraid it screwed up the EFI partition -seemingly not, as it will boot to Recovery and external drives.
The data still seems to be there, but the OS is having trouble accessing it.
Do you know what would be causing this? I really need that data back :/

It appears I can unlock the partition, using diskutil via the Terminal (diskutil coreStorage unlockVolume <UUID> -passphrase <passphrase>).
However the volume doesn't have a UUID. It lists the partition type as "FFFFFFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFF-FFFFFFFFFFFF" (which is a UUID) but using that doesn't work.
Additionally when I use diskutil coreStorage list, it comes up with nothing. I'm at a loss here, the partition doesn't even know it's own UUID or that it's encrypted. It seems quite damaged to me but I don't have the slightest idea why, as I CAN boot to it and enter the password but it will stop at the "no" symbol part of the way along.

  • System problems - programs won't open

all of a sudden my computer is sick, here are just some of the symptoms:
    1) programs won't open (ie Itunes, Empty Trash) or take forever as in hours or days (Iphoto, Disk Utility). Basically evertything I use except Safari gets frozen.
    2) when I try to switch between user accounts I get a frozen blue screen.
The only way out of the freeze-ups is to unplug the computer and wait at least ten minutes to reboot, but the problems remain. I was finally able to run Disk Utility to repair permissions on the internal Hard Drive but to no avail.
    Some details of my case:
    OS X 10.5.8
221GB used , and 44.8 GB free space on the internal Hard Drive
I have 4 external Hard Drives for all my various media and backups including one with 650GB of Itunes Music. This drive takes forever to be recognized.

You'll probably get better advice if you post in the Mac forums.
    This is iTunes for Windows.

  • My iTunes is no longer working.  I uninstalled and reinstalled but the program won't open and run.  I was trying to download an mp3 file last evening and I think something has been deleted that I need to open the iTunes.  How do i figure out what is gone

I uninstalled and reinstalled but the program still won't open.  I was trying to download an mp3 file last evening.  Instead the site tried to install a new audio player.  I did not want it so uninstalled it immediately.  I think in that process something was deleted that I need for iTunes but I do not know what.  How do i figure out what is gone and recover it?
I did try a system restore - but that was not a fix either.

Ackk ... that behavior is consistent with the play_mp3.exe trojan:

Try downloading and installing the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware. Update your MBAM definitions and then run a full scan of the PC. (Takes about 2 hour on my Lenovo.)

Does the scan find any infections? If so, please paste the contents of the log file for the scan in a reply here so we can have a look.

  • My MBP wouldn't start this morning, it was just stuck on white screen with grey logo and fan running.  I replaced my magsafe power cord and resolved starting issue.  Now I can't connect to internet and iTunes won't load???  Help?

This morning I was just getting the white screen with logo and status bar with fan running.  I thought it was an issue with the power adapter so I went out and replaced it.  MBP will start now, but won't connect to internet.  I have full wi-fi signal.  Also, when I try to launch iTunes, it just quits right away.  Please help?

Reinstall OS X without erasing the drive
    1. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
    2. Reinstall Snow Leopard
If the drive is OK then quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed with reinstalling OS X.  Note that the Snow Leopard installer will not erase your drive or disturb your files.  After installing a fresh copy of OS X the installer will move your Home folder, third-party applications, support items, and network preferences into the newly installed system.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.
