Many Questions on Windows 8 and Bootcamp

Hi. I have a couple questions question on windows 8 and bootcamp. I know this is probably on the internet somewhere, but i can't find it anywhere if it is. So please don't strike me down for repeat questions.
My first question is wether or not widows 8 will run on the current version of bootcamp. I know that it is not fully compatible but can it be installed with few issues since the underlying code for windows 7 and 8 should be relatively similair. I have read a posting on line that says this is possible but i wanted a second opinion. I have a 64 bit version system builder edition shipping to me right now, is this ok.
My second question is when (if ever) the patches come out for winodws 8 to run perfectly on bootcamp, will I just be able to download them, Install the patches and everything will be just fine. Would/ could it be done with out having to reinstall the operating system. This is important because a system builder lisence can only be installed once and then i have to buy another copy of windows 8 for $100.
Any and all input would be great. Thanks!

in terms of updates to win8 then as far as windows8 goes it's running on a normal "pc" not on a mac it's not virtualization here so everything works as normal
I bought an imac 2011 version 22" 4GB ....
I installed windows7 ultimate 64bit on it
since I bought the digital update to windows 8 pro
updated over the internet (you download an exe and take it from there)
it updated fine it use the windows7 drivers so everything in terms of mac stuff works as before
I let it update the amd video card driver and got a lot of crashes at bootup
rolled back to the bootcamp win7 drivers and it's a lot better
sure every now and then startup result in a crash but a reboot always get me into win8
play games and program in win8 never had a cash when I get in and because it's native games run great
likely when the official apple win8 support comes along I will stop getting the odd crash at boot into win8

Did you try to hook up both monitors to the Belkin adaptor? Trying will determine if your monitor has a bad input port. See if the Belkin adaptor is the problem. I have never used that specific adaptor, but I have always had luck with the Dr. Bott's DVI for ADC adaptor. Best of luck.

  • DFS network drive giving error to many clients of Windows 7 and 8.1 after accessing from run

    Hi,
My network drive (DFS) is giving below error after upgrade OS from windows 2008 to 2012. On many clients of windows 7 and 8.1 we are able to resolve
by rebooting the system or by net use * /d command. But many user still getting error after accessing from mapped drive as well as from RUN command.
some area stupid thing happening, after accessing from RUN like \\networkdrive then it will open successfully and show all the shared folder. When we
click on particular shared folder it gives below error message and some works perfectly fine. Even though that person have rights on both the shared folder.

    Hi Inder Johar,
Please check if clients could connect to \\domain\dfsroot and UNC path. You could refer to the article below to troubleshoot the issue:

  • Windows 7 and BootCamp 3.0: BSOD every startup

Ok, I have a Mac Pro early 2008, I have Windows 7 RTM (from MSDNAA) and after I install BootCamp 3.0, every time I boot into Windows it gives me a BSOD, a few seconds after it reaches the desktop (reproducible) . Anyone have this experience? I know this is very early in the stage.
BootCamp 2.1 seems to do just fine.

Actually. At first, I installed Windows 7 with BootCamp 2.1, everything worked out well.
Then I got the Snow Leopard disc, it apparently had BootCamp 3.0, I installed it (I didn't uninstall BootCamp 2.1), restarted, it gave me the BSOD, I rebooted into Windows 7 a few more times, same thing.
I formatted Windows 7 drive and reinstalled it from scratch, this time, on first boot, I install BootCamp 3.0 (and only that), restarted into Windows 7 again, and it gave me the BSOD. I rebooted several more times, and it was reproducible.
Now I'm reinstalling Windows 7 again, but this time keeping BootCamp 2.1.
All the drivers worked, even the WiFi, BlueTooth, Sound, etc. The only thing that did not work was the video card, but I found the drivers directly from Nvidia's website instead.

  • Windows 8 and bootcamp stuff

I am a gamer. (just to tell you)
The PC games that I own are for...well PCs, I used to use them on the family computer but the other newer ones are a bit violent and my parents don't like my younger brother watching. So I decided to use boot camp on my macbook. This game apparently runs on windows 8 and windows 8 appears to be cheaper than all the other (trustworthy) windows 7 stuff.
I read that you need to type in the product key. So if I buy this

will I be able to use the product key from that and what would happen to the disc?
It will be a great help, and thank you if you could be bothered to read it. Poor Grammar and wording, sorry, but please help.

so what version of windows should I get. I have plenty of space on my macbook (about 700gb left) so the 16gb isn't a problem, and I have a 16gb flash drive, and my macbook pro is mountain lion.
So I am planning on getting a 64bit version.
Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate Disc (which is best for me)
Only Home & Professional are supported (although Ultimate seems to work fine). Choose 64bit Professional.
I am not sure what you are referring to when you say "the 16GB isn't a problem" but you will need to make a 60GB (minimum) partition for Win 7.

  • Question about windows theme and viewing webpages

I all, I am new here, I have had my laptop for about 8 mths, but it was packed away for about 6mths, so it has only really had 3 mths of use and that was 99% for watching movies as this was my backup laptop (my girlfriends, which was never used)...
Okay I just got my laptop back out of storage and started using it again as I want to make this my main work computer now, it is a Satellite A100 Series. Running Win XP Pro SP2. Okay, now i have been using it for about 1 week now, and it is a fantastic computer, expecially the finger swipe feature, I am usually a XP Home Edition person, but i am making do with Pro, just have not had all the experience with it..
Now here is the problem, and this has always been the problem since purchased, when we first bought this and connected to the internet with IE7 the fonts were massive, i figured how to fix this in the display settings after a few hours playing around, and also noticed the webpages if there was a background image it does not display... (this week I also found this is the same for any application on the PC that uses a webpage like set-up, or something, just sectain things... such as i open the Security Center in the control panel and the whole thing is white background, and any background images are not there (making it white), and even the round corners that are background images do not show up, and comparing to my other computer, there should be green and red background colours etc.
Also with Windows Media Player the actual buttons should be purple and black in WMP11, and these have like a html style white background over the buttons with links on them at the top and the play, stop etc buttons have a back outer and the inside is white...
basically what i am saying is it is not showing up CSS style WC3 content on some pages and apps on the laptop, and as for webpages they are exactly the same, I have tried IE7, FireFox, Avant Browser, and all the same, the only one that shows pages almost like it should is Opera 9.2, but I really need to fix this problem... it is obioussly something simple to do with display, or settings but i have literally tried every simgle different way of doing things in the last week, tried everything in the control panel, all the Toshiba toools, and no results.
I am not a newbie or anything either, i just cant get this fixed, i cant even think of a setting that would make this occur let alone trying to fix it... I have all recent Windows Updates (though like i said, it has been doing this since the first day of purchase)...
If i could post a screenhot here I would show you... what webpages look like in IE7 and FireFox and Avant (the only difference is Internet Explorer background of the pages is mainly grey and firefox is white, avant is grey also.)
one more issue, when i was messing around with the settings in the control panel, Under Performace I changed it to something like "make display best for performace" rather than "Best for Display" , and this then made my control panel plain with a white background, and everything is not how i am used to it, even the categories are done for each section , they are just all grouped there, and my Windows Home on my other laptop is set to this, but it atleast has a sidebar on the left with a button to change back...
now i am at a loss to find the Performace button, as it is there no longer, and I want to change it back to "display best for the display" not the persomance... so if anyone knows how to do this, please let me know... i took a screenshot of my Control Panel also.. and it is not bare, I am using the Windows Zune theme (the black buttons and backgrounds etc), so it used to be a dark grey background with a statusbar on the side with all links and details just like for folders etc... so yeah this is another thing i want to fix.
Also i dont have the CD anymore to repair it, not that i think it needs it, but i do have a standard out of the box Win Xp Pro disc, i have been seriusosly doing a fresh install, but i know i will lose all the toshiba add-ons and extras it came with, so thats the only reason i have not, as it has Protector Suite QL which i would have to pay for if doing a clean install, and i really dont want to do that as there is obviously something i am missing, its as simple as that, there is nothing wrong with the system its just not configured correctly.
Here are some screenshots of how I see webpages, my Security Center Page, and my Control Panel since i messed it up doing 'Make best for performace' and the display turned to basic white background and half the stuff in the Control Panel is now missing, it was setup in categories previous... ahhhhh, when i try and fix the original problem i made another..
    http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa134/phorumws/just%20stuff/ScreenHunter_01-1.jpg
{This is the Security Center Screen when i click from the Control Panel, this was before i made it bland)
    http://i203.photobucket.com/albums/aa134/phorumws/just%20stuff/ScreenHunter_02Sep3021.54.jpg
( this is now my control panel once i went into 'Premformance and Display" (i think. it was definately performace in the category name though) .. and i changed a setting to do with performance and display making it use less resources.. now i cant change it back, as the performace button does not exist anymore :( )
Thanks for reading, and I sure hope someone out there can help me cos i would hate to have to do a whole new install over something as small as this, there is not many add-on programs on my laptop, as i said, it has probably beeen used 20 times ever, and mostly to watch movies until 1 week ago where it was sitting in storage for 6mths,,
Any help would be greatly appreciated... I have tried all Internet Options, all Display Options, all variations , i need something specific, it is not only effecting the internet, but overall programs with html style links, etc and definately CSS style sheets and the background image feature in html code.
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jay
Very impressive posting! As I can see after 4 days nobody wrote anything to give you the solution for your problem. I have read your posting very carefully and must say that it was not easy to understand your problem exactly (maybe because English language is not my mother tongue).
I know very well that new OS installation is latest and radical solution but I recommend you to check some Microsoft WXP forums because described issue is, in my opinion, more for OS forums than for Toshiba forum.
If you will post the same in Microsoft forum please post the link and we can follow the discussion there.
I wish you good luck and hopefully you will find answers soon.

  • ITunes 9, Windows 7, and Bootcamp 3.0

Just thought I'd post this for anyone who is as frustrated as I've been over the issue of sharing your iTunes library on a single computer with Leopard on one partition and Windows 7 on the other.
First (on the advice of various helpful posts on the internet), get MacDrive 8: http://www.mediafour.com/products/macdrive/
MacDrive allows your Windows OS to "see" files on your Mac. No network drive, no copying your entire iTunes library to an external, no formatting a FAT32 network, just a handy little app and five extra minutes of your time...
Once you activate MacDrive(alternately you can try the free trial for 5 days) and restart back into Windows, follow these steps:
    1. Go into your Computer. You should now see all your hard drives, including the Mac OS partition. Mine was designated as "Macintosh HD (E:)". Open the hard drive that contains your Mac OS and navigate to where your iTunes music folder is. This is typically in "Users > (yourUserName) > Music > iTunes > iTunes Music".
    2. Open a second window from Computer. Open the Windows hard drive. Navigate to your "My Music" folder. This is typically in "(C:) > Users > (yourUserName) > My Music". Create a new folder and name it "iTunes". DO NOT go into your "iTunes Media" folder!!!
    3. Delete any existing iTunes Media database and XML files ("iTunes Libary", "iTunes Library Extras", "iTunes Library Genius", and "iTunes Music Library") that may have previously been generated on the Windows OS partition.
    3. With both windows (we'll call them panes to avoid obvious confustion) still open, select the entire "iTunes Music" folder from your Mac OS drive and create a shortcut/alias. Windows will append " - Shortcut" to the alias name. Drag this alias into your Windows OS pane in "My Music". Rename the shortcut "iTunes Music". Do the same for your "Album Artwork" folder.
    4. Next, select the following four files from your Mac OS pane: "iTunes Library", "iTunes Library Extras", "iTunes Library Genius", and "iTunes Music Library". These are the Database and XML files Windows will need to resolve ID3 tags. Drag these four files into your Windows OS pane. Remember, you're not inside the "iTunes Media" folder, but just outside of it. Since you're working between partitions, the files will be copied instead of being moved.
    5. Almost there! Your iTunes folder/file structure on the Windows OS partition should look thusly:
Album Artwork (shortcut from Mac OS partition)
    iTunes Media
iTunes Library (XML file from Mac OS partition)
iTunes Library Extras (Database file from Mac OS partition)
iTUnes Library Genius (Database file from Mac OS partition)
iTunes Music Library (XMl file from Mac OS partition)
iTunes Music (shortcut from Mac OS partition)
    6. At this point, you can close the pane that has your music library from the Mac OS partition.
    7. Launch iTunes (you have upgraded to the latest version, right?) and go into Edit > Preferences > Advanced.
    8. In "iTunes Media folder location", click on the "Change" button and navigate to the iTunes folder on your Windows C: drive. SELECT THE SHORTCUT "iTunes Music" YOU CREATED IN STEP 3. DESELECT THE TWO OPTIONS "Keep iTunes Media folder organized", "Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to Library".
    9. That's it! Your iTunes should start populating right away. If it doesn't, just quit and relaunch iTunes again. To confirm that your music is 'pointing' to the right music library, just select a song, right-click and choose "Get Info". The path to the MP3 file should start with E: (or whatever letter Windows has designated your Mac partition as).
    IMPORTANT: Safety/Security Note
I tried making the Mac OS "Read Only" through MacDrive, but unfortunately this particular iTunes sharing solution only works if MacDrive has write access to the Mac partition. So...your Mac could be vulnerable to (gasp!) those nasty PC viruses.

This is amazing! thank you, worked splendidly for me!
One question though, since the all the database files are not shortcuts is that going to require me to re-copy those files any time I want my windows partition to look just like the mac one? I'm pretty sure I know how this is working, but I'm kinda scared to try it, because my library is like 240gb, and i really don't want to mess it up, ha ha
    thanks again for the tutorial

  • Windows 7 and bootcamp

    I have a MBP mid 2012 retina display 2.6Ghz intel core i7, 500gb flash storage, 16gb 1600MHz DDR3 ram with OSX 10.8.2
I want to run windows on bootcamp to play some mmorpg's but i am wondering which version of windows 7 would be best?
From the little searching i did i know that 64 bit is the way to go but then there are multiple versions of windows7 with 64 bit....
The only intention of the bootcamp is for gaming so i dont need any fancy extra tasks a more expensive version would do.
SO.... which version of windows do i get? Home premium, proffesional, ultimate?

On your Mac, I recommend you to use a 64-bit WIndows 7 version. Then, you have three Windows 7 editions: Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate. As you are going to use it only for gaming, Home Premium is enough.
Remember that you have to buy the full version to be able to install Windows on your computer. If you need help installing Windows, print the PDF > http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/boot_camp_install-setup_10.7.pdf

  • Problem with black screen and crashes after installing windows 7 and bootcamp

K, so I partitioned my internal HD using Bootcamp, installed a new copy of Windows 7 Home, put in my Mac OSX disk and installed the additional stuff. I can successfully log in to Windows and open the browsers I have installed: Comodo dragon and Mozilla FF. McAfee auto installed with FF and I have Comodo Antivirus installed.
However, within minutes of use, my screen goes black, the computer does not shut down and reboot, I have to press the power button and wait a few secs for it to shut down then reboot. This has happened from both browsers while in Windows on Facebook in a game; while trying to save an attachment from an email via webmail and also while checking the inbuilt Windows settings for the display.
The latter produced the following report (below) on reboot and when I hit the "look for a solution" button, the actual window vanished after a few secs.
2 additional bits of info which may or may not be related:
    a) running windows troubleshooter I discovered I have prob with:
driver for Inter (r) 5 series /3400 series chipset Family USB Universal Host Contoller - 3B3B
    - I Googled this and it seems a common prob. Tried the reinstall, didn't work, so disabled it as suggested on some of the forum posts.
    b) The OSX side of my computer seems to run fine most of the time, tho I have had the odd back screen, then wait, press reboot to power on and off in past as related in this post last month: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4844797 (maybe a kernal panic..???)
Would anyone know what is causing these probs or what I can do about them? My computer is no longer under warranty and the couple of times I had probs while it was, I was told the probs were to do with the power supply and given a new one, I'm not sure if they looked at the logic board. The OSX side has also had an ongoing prob to do with sudden shrinkage of the image content, which I mentioned to the geniuses at the Apple store b4, but as it wasn't acting up there they couldn't do anything about it... ( looks as tho sm1 changed the screen resolution and whatever is in the browser window shrinks, tho desktop, is never effected - if that makes sense!.)
All in all tho, does make me wonder if the prob is based in the graphics switching..???

  • Windows 7 and Bootcamp in general

10 months ago, I had Snow Leopard and Windows XP boot-camped on a 160GB 5400rpm drive. It all worked perfectly, however the boot up and shutdown times for both OSs were massive.
In January I bought a Western Digital 320GB Scorpio Black 7200rpm drive, that appeared to speed up the system. Decreasing the startup time by around 60%! I gave it a fresh install of Snow Leopard, and then pulled all my files back from my TimeCapsule. I presumed that the extra RPM had sped up the system, I then installed 4GB of RAM, up from the 2GB I had had previously. One thing i had overlooked when I noticed the speed increase was that BootCamp and Windows weren't installed.
Last night, I installed my works copy of Windows 7 Enterprise. The install was a breeze, and quite quick. After the install, I went back into Snow Leopard, repaired disk permissions for the Macintosh Disk, and set Macintosh Disk as the default start-up disk.
Since then my mac is back to its old boot-up time, maybe a little quicker, but nothing drastic. It is a huge increase compared to what it was without bootcamp. I have also found that the Bootcamp volume can not be mounted in Snow Leopard.
Because of all these issues, I have gone back into boot camp assistant and removed it. The boot-up time is still higher than before but only by 10 seconds or so.
With Bootcamp (original HDD): 2 Minutes
Without Bootcamp (new HDD): 45 Seconds
With Bootcamp (last night): 1 minute 45 Seconds
Without Bootcamp (this morning): 57 Seconds
All is OK at the moment, and i'm wondering whether to try again. Even though it would boot, it was still partially useless as I wanted to also use it with parallels.
I've repaired the permissions overtime vie done anything to the hard drive just to be safe.
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers
    Joe

That is not a SSD. It is a Seagate Hybrid drive consisting of a rotating hard drive and flash storage section. It is a very good drive and almost as fast as a reall SSD. Yes it is compatible with your Mac. I'm currently using one in my late 2011 MBP.
Use Time Machine to backup your current OS X install. you will need Winclone to backup and restore the Windows partition. Or just save your important files from the Windows partition to a NTFS formatted drive and then reinstall Windows once you transfer the OS X partition to the new drive with Time Machine.
Yes you will need to use Boot Camp Assistant again to repartition the new drive for the Windows partition whether you use Winclone or not. OS X, Time Machine, can't backup the Windows partition.
No you don't need to buy a new license for Windows 7 as long as you still have the license key code for the current install.

  • Mac Pro compatibility with Windows 7 and Bootcamp

    This apple post : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3920
says they will not support Win7 on older Mac Pro's (e.g. 2.66ghz dual). Does anyone know why?
When I try to instal Win7 on Bootcamp 3 I get a BSOD and it will not run.
    Suggestions?

If you look closely you see that EFI64 (UEFI 2.x) is the demarcation line of 2008 between support or not is EFI firmware.
2006-7 and you get the EFI menu prompt with 64-bit Vista and 7. Mac Pro and others pre-2008. Apple's idea of supported or not may not be ours. If you want to troubleshoot yourself.
BC 3.0 - built during the summer, before Windows Oct 22nd, buggy, and rushed. Often due to the HFS read feature, just rename "AppleHFS.sys" to something else is often enough. Not sure why your system is having trouble without knowing more.

  • Some question about windows 7 and mini laptop

    hi
i glad that i found this forum, i have the mini HP laptop 110 and i have some question
    (i have intel atom 1.66 , 2G memory and windows 7 starter)
    1. if i'll instal the windows 7 pro - is my performance will be smaller ?
    2. what is the most light anti-virus that recommended for this mini laptop ?
    3. what is the most light browser that recommended for this mini laptop ?
    thank's in advance

Windows 7 is Windows 7 as far as the resources it consumes. So feel free to upgrade to 7 Pro and your performance should not take a hit. For light antivirus I recommend Avira. It is what I have on my own netbook. Lastly a good light browser is Opera.

  • Windows 7 and Bootcamp Update 3.1

Have installed Windows 7 OS and have upgraded Bootcamp to version 3.1.
As per Apple support page, I need to install one last exe-file called: 3-1.1.3 32 bit.exe - this installs the drivers for graphics, keyboard and mouse. (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1899)
Every time I try to install this last file I get the following error message:
The upgrade patch cannot be installed by Windows Installer service because program to be upgraded may be missing, or the upgrade path may update a different version of the program. Verify that the program to be upgraded exists on your computer and that you have the correct upgrade.
In my opinion I thought I had done all upgrade required. What am I missing here?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Coming over from the dark side.....many questions...Extreme and Express

My 1st apple product was the iPhone so now I believe!
Recently, I purchased an Airport Extreme 802.11n from eBay.
Question #1: Are there two versions of the Airport Extreme 802.11n? How do I know if I have the dual-band version? From the Airport Utility, I can choose the 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz band but not both. I can see that there is a "b/g" compatible mode but what does it mean if I choose the b/g compatible mode? It seems that I have the older 802.11n Airport Extreme model?
I also purchased a used Airport Express b/g model. I thought it was the "n" model because it looks like the "n" model (all white). I have a bad feeling that this does not have the WDS feature. If this is the case, does that mean I can't use this Airport Express to extend the Airport Extreme Base Station?
Can I use bridge mode wireless to extend the wireless signal in my home although I will have two wireless ID's in the home? Basically, with the Extreme and Express that I have now, can I set it up to extend wireless coverage in my home?
My Extreme is currently on 7.3.1 because 7.4.1 is not stable. My Windows pc's disconnects all the time.
    My Express is on 6.3.

Hello westladog. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Are there two versions of the Airport Extreme 802.11n?
There are actually three "versions." Here they are in "oldest" to "newest" order:
    o Non-Gigabit Ethernet (Part No. MA073LL/A)
o Gigabit Ethernet (Part No. MB053LL/A)
    o Dual-Band (Part No. MB763LL/A)
Based on your description, you have either the non-Gigabit or Gigabit version.
I can see that there is a "b/g" compatible mode but what does it mean if I choose the b/g compatible mode?
That would mean that your AirPort will support both 802.11n and 802.11b/g wireless clients simultaneously.
I also purchased a used Airport Express b/g model. I thought it was the "n" model because it looks like the "n" model (all white). I have a bad feeling that this does not have the WDS feature.
Both the newer 802.11n or older 802.11b/g versions of the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) support WDS ... so either could be used to extend the wireless range of your 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn).
Can I use bridge mode wireless to extend the wireless signal in my home although I will have two wireless ID's in the home?
With a WDS, you will only have one "wireless ID." The AirPorts use the term "Network Name." It is also known as a SSID.
Basically, with the Extreme and Express that I have now, can I set it up to extend wireless coverage in my home?
    Yes.

  • Multitouchpad drivers won't install with Windows XP and bootcamp

I just got a MacBook pro with the multitouch trackpad.  I have repeatedly reinstalled the driver then told windows to rescan the system, it identifies the trackpad then says "a problem occurred during hardware installation" and the trackpad does nothing at all. I am using Windows XP Pro SP2 and the drivers on my Mac install disk for 10.6.4.

That would probably be what is wrong. All the drivers worked except the ethernet and touchpad. I guess I will be using the wireless and a mouse.
