I want to backup my MacBook Pro to iCloud, but receive the error message "recovery partition required".  Is this easy to fix?
    Thanks for your time.

Sounds like your missing the partition. I have seen this before when I friend had a bad drive and took it in. Apple store replaced the driveamd installed lion but no partition. I had to reinstall lion from a full install DVD to build the recovery partition. Looks like you need to do the same. No data will be lost if you don't re-partition with the disk util. Just run the lion install from within lion and use the default. It will build the partition for you. Then re-run the apple updates for the 10.7.2 update which embeds the find my Mac part of iCloud in the recovery partition.
    Good luck.

  • Im installing and it tells me it make a recovery disk?  What does this mean?

I'm installing the new mountain lion and it say that it needs a recovery disk? I don't know exactly what it is asking? Please help!

Unlike OS X versions prior to Lion, Mountain Lion does not come with an install disk, and the installer will delete itself from your hard drive after you install ML, so you'll be left with no handy way to recover your drive in case of a problem (especially a problem during or right after install). Read the following MacWorld Articles to learn all about Recovery and creating a Recovery Disk:
    <http://www.macworld.com/search?q=install+from+recovery+partition>
I actually needed the one I made this time right after installing ML--my Disk required some repairs--and I was really glad I had it!
    Good Luck!

I am installing Windows 7 and I get an error message: "Your disk could not be partitioned. An error ocurred while partitioning the disk". I was using a Windows & Home Premium OEM Software that I purchased from Microsoft. I was given to Windows 100GB to use for Quickbooks pro, Payroll and Publisher. I have the Macbook Pro model No: MD102LL/A. Does anyone knows what happenned or can advice me in what to do? Please help!!!

If you were using Apple's BootCamp and received this message, quit it and open Disk Uility in your Applicaitons/Utilities folder.
Select the Macintosh HD partition on the left and select Erase and Erase Free Space > Zero option and let it complete (important) this will check the spare space for bad sectors that can cause issues formatting partitions.
Once it's completed, try creating a partiton again in BootCamp.
If that doesn't work, then hold command option r keys down while connected to a fast internet connection, Internet Recovery should load (spinning globe) and then in that Disk Utility, select your entire internal drive and click > First Aid > Repair Disk and Permissions.
    reboot and attempt Bootcamp again.
If you still get a error, it might be that you have OS X data on the bottom area where BootCamp partition needs to go. This would occur if you had the drive or computer for a long time or wrote a large amount of files to the drive and nearly filling it up and then reduced some, but it left traces in the area BootCamp needs to go.

  • Reinstalling Mountain Lion from recovery partition

    Hi,
I am trying to reinstall the Mountain Lion OS from my recovery partition. I have already erased my drive and attempted to reinstall like I have always done. This time though it is asking for an apple id that was used to purchase lion. However I went from snow leapord to Mountain Lion, and am trying to reinstall my mountain lion.
I have done this before countless times and it has always worked, but now its not. I can not make a bootable flash drive to use as I already erased my hard drive and this is the only mac I have.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Jeff

Can you start up your MBP holding down the OPTION key ands access the Recovery partition?
What model MBP do you have?  Did it come with installation disks?  You may have to use those first before you can install Mt. Lion.
    Ciao.

  • How can I repair my OS X Boot Disk without a Recovery Partition (Using Disk Utility)

    Hey there,
I recently found that my OS X boot partition is corrupt (using DU's "Verify Disk" function). I would like to repair it using Disk Utility, but that would require me to boot from the Recovery Partition, which is a problem...
I have Ubuntu installed on a separate partition on my internal hard drive (using a Hybrid GPT - MBR Setup). Because of this, the Mountain Lion Installer wasn't able to install the Recovery Partition.
What is the best way to get Disk Utility to repair the disk in this situation. I know that I could boot another OS X install from an external hard drive and use that to repair the disk. This is a bad option for me because I don't really have a spare external hard drive that I could use (or partition)... Other than that, I'm clueless
    Thanks in advance

Unless you install Mountain Lion properly you'll not have a Recovery HD partition. Your options are to install Mountain Lion on another drive from which to boot the computer should you need to use Disk Utility. Or you can try this:
Boot into single-user mode.  After startup is completed you will be in command line mode and should see a prompt with a cursor positioned after it.  At the prompt enter the following then press RETURN:
    /sbin/fsck -fy
If you receive a message that says "***** FILE SYSTEM WAS MODIFIED *****" then re-run the command until you receive a message that says "** The volume (name_of_volume) appears to be OK."  If you re-run the command more than seven times and do not get the OK message, then the drive cannot be repaired this way. If you were successful then enter:
    reboot
and press RETURN to restart the computer.

  • Factory recovery partition on windows 8 in Asus X551CALaptop

I purchased Asus x551CA notebook on 22nd Feb 2014. After about 45 days I formated hard disk partition
on which Activated Windows 8 operating systme was installed.I formatted an repartitioned HDD.
And I installed and uninstalled windows8 and windows 8.1 90 days enterprise evaluation edition. Because of
these link to factory recovery partition is broken.
I have created system image disks which are working to restore system. I forgot how I created these disks. May be
I did control panel>recovery>file history>windows 7 file recovery. So these disks should be System Image Backup.
I think these are not OEM recovery disks. When I insert these disks during reset and refresh I get a message
that "Media you inserted is not valid". And I am able to create system image on second partition of hard disk of
my laptop.I have also got product key of windows 8 by a program jellybean keyfinder.
To restore from discs created by me. I insert a repair disc then I go to UEFI settings. Then I change boot preferences to
boot from DVD. Then I go to Restore form images. Then computer asks me to insert my discs no from 1 to 4. One after the other. Then computer restore to windows 8. It looks alike as it was factory made.
-When I try to create a recovery drive by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive
Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
to the recovery drive". Please tell me how can it come with not grayed dialog box so that I can copy
recovery partition to USB pen drive? When notebook was new this check box was not grayed and I was able to
copy recovery partition on USB pen drive.
-Since I cannot copy recovery partition to USB therefore I also cannot reset and refresh windows 8 on
the basis of USB. It was working when notebook was new.
-And reset or refresh also not working on the basis of hidden recovery partition. How can it will start
working? It was working when notebook was new.
-I have tried diskpart command do make hidden recovery partition visible. But it becomes invisible
after restart. I used following command
    1. Command Prompt Run as administer.
    2. diskpart
    3. list disk
    4. select disk 0
    5. list partition
    6. select partition 6
    7. assign letter z
by these commands hidden recovery partition becomes visible and again when I restart laptop it becomes invisible.
And I am not able to do anything with recovery partition E.G. copy the recovery partition to USB
When I created a system image using the following command I became able to refresh my PC. May be it was refreshing
on the basis of newly created image.
    recimg /createimage D:\IMAGE81
    recimg /setcurrent D:\IMAGE81
But it is also not working this time and it gives a message "Drive on which windows is installed is locked unlock it".
May because I installe AVG antivirus it locked the drive.
    I also used REAgentC command
    reagentc /setreimage /path F:\Recovery\WindowsRE\ /target C:\Windows /bootkey 4300
Maybe I executed above command once again I used D: instead of F:
And I was able to refresh PC but I was not able to Reset. And I was not able to copy recovery partition on USB
by going to control panel> Recovery >create a recovery drive.
Recovery drive dialog box appears but with grayed check box of "copy the recovery partition from PC
    to the recovery drive".
((I am giving images of computer management in first_image no partition was created it was in factory made state. And
in second_Image I created an extra disk partition which is present on disk this time.)) I cannot give images because
of my account is not varified.
So I am giving output of diskpart command to understand disk partitions.
    C:\>diskpart
    DISKPART> list disk

Volume 6               Restore          NTFS   Partition     20 GB    Healthy      Hidden
in the beginnig instead of D: (130 GB) and F:(128 GB) there was only one partition D:(258 GB) 130+128 GB.
Please tell me answers of following quesions:-
    1. Tell me how to regain the link to factory recovery drive.
    2. Please tell me how can I refresh and reset PC on the basis of Hidden Factory Recovery Partition. And how can I copy Hidden Factory Recovery Partition on USB and DVDs. I have 16GB USB pen drive and a DVD writer. So I can use these two storage media
only and except these I have 500GB HDD on my laptop.
    4. I want to know that Factory recovery partition is useful or not. Should I delete it.
    3. I have DVDs as I said above. On the basis of these I can reinstall windows 8. When I created these discs windows 8 was present on laptop. Currently windows 8.1 is present on laptop. Please tell me how can I create my own hidden recovery partition for
windows 8. I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So please tell me can I create my own hidden recovey partition for windows 8.1.
    5. Can I download contents of factory recovery partition from internet.
    6. Should I go to shopkeeper. He repairs computers as well. Probably he will manage for me to get Recovery partition discs. In this case these DVDs may be different from my DVDs as I mentioned above. Maybe only thing I get from these discs that I will
able to reset and refresh computer.
    7. Microsoft shoult create a program that can re-establish link to factory recovery partition. And this program should be able to create new hidden recovery partition as well. As I have upgraded to windows 8.1. So I think I should have a new hidden recovery partition
for Windows 8.1. I think I can above thing my other way. If I create new set of DVDs by going to control panel>recovery>   file history>System Image Backup. It will create discs for windows 8.1. And I will able to restore system to windows
8.1 by these discs. And for windows 8 I have already discs. But these discs will only work by changing boot options(by choosing UEFI) and image recovery. And reset and refresh functions will not work then in such situation factory recovery partition
will become useless. Then such situation I should delete factory recovery partition as it is useless.
    8. At beginnign I also tried AI recovery burner. After trying it for 2-3 days I came to know that AI recovery burner is not for windows 8. There should be a tutorial for these thing so that people like me not waste their time.

I used a software named UNDELETE on my hidden recovery partition to recover it. I get some files by this software. Important thing is that I got a 2.84 GB file named 00eebc9d.rb in dir D:\recovered1\Files Detected by their Signatures\Unknown Application\.rb.
This file may be useful. Please suggest me how can I use these files to reset and refresh my OS. I used some dir commands as follows to get list of these files:
    dir /s >f:\list.txt
    dir /s /a:s >f:\list2.txt
Some files were system files so these file were not shown by first dir command. So I used second dir command.
    Output of dir /s >f:\list.txt

  • HT4718 New iMac (March 2013) has no recovery partition ?

    Hallo,
i contacted Apple support because of a problem with an external USB 3.0 hdd after sleep mode. In some cases the external hdd will not be recognized
after sleep mode by Mac OS 10.8.5. For checking something the Apple engineer said i should reboot by holding the Alt key.
After reboot the engineer was  astonished that my new iMac has no recovery partition. The iMac starts a recovery by internet connection but if i understood him correctly a brand new iMac must contain a recovery partition.
What can be the reason that a newly bought iMac does not have a recovery partition ? I contacted my dealer (German online store) but I did not get an answer until now. My newly bought MacBook Air has a recovery partition.
    Please excuse my bad English.
    Greetings Jan

  • Disk Utility in recovery partition doesn't see errors present when scanning from 10.8.3

I'm running Disk Utility and finding some errors (Unable to bootstrap transaction group XXXX: inconsistent crosscheck, No valid commit checkpoint found, The volume XXXX was found corrupt and needs to be repaired, Incomplete or inconsistent CoreStorage Physical Volume set)
When I reboot into the recovery partition and try to fix these errors, the disk checks out fine.  Back in 10.8.3, I get the same errors.  Any ideas?

Yes, I chose the Repair Disk option from the Recovery Partition Disk Utility.  This is a FileVault encrypted drive, and I've entered in the password to unlock the disk.  From the Recovery Partition, Disk Utility reports no errors during Verify or Repair (same with Disk Permissions).
Once back in OS X 10.8.3, all the errors that I described previously show up in Disk Utility.  It can't be unmounted since it's my startup disk, so I'm stuck not being able to fix things.

  • Recovery Partition won't boot!

    Hello dear forum participants!
I have hp pavilion dv6 laptop, recently I've reinstalled original OS(win7 home 64 bit which comes with the laptop) to win7 home premium.
Now I would like to get back to factory defaults and I'm unable to boot from HP Recovery partition.
When I press F11 at startup it boots ordinary OS, but not the HP recovery software.
How can I get my recovery partition working??
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

I just followed following instructions and it worked perfectly. I didn't have to install anything new,
"1.Right-click on "Computer" icon and select manage.
2.This will launch the Microsoft Management Console.
3.On the left side of the MMC, click on "Disk Management" and it will show you all of the partitions.
4.Right-click on the "HP Recovery" partition and select "Mark as Active Partition."
5.When the warning prompt appears, select "Yes" - Reboot the notebook and it will automatically boot into the Recovery Manager (without having to press F11). "
This will work given that you have intact recovery partition, any version of windows 7 (may be vista and xp too) installed. But be mindfull once you mark it as Active Partition it'll automatically boot in recovery partition and you'll have to restore the computer to out of the box state. Otherwise you'll have to use some utility to chagne boot loader.

  • Lenovo G570 - I delete my recovery partition, recovery DVD doesn't work.

    Hi!
First of all - sorry for my english.
I have problem with my Lenovo G570.
I make a backup DVD with system by OKR (4DVD). Then by accident i DELETED my recovery partition. When i try to boot from these DVD i get error: "The program cannot restore the system partition because its structure is incorrect ,you may have to recreate the partition to continue".
    My partitions looks like this:
C: New installation of Windows 7 enterprise trial
D: Lenovo (default partition with drivers and backup)
Hidden empty partition where recovery was.
    What should i do now?

one key recover won't work when you delete the hidden partition. there is only one way to fix this issue that is shipping back to service to reset the hdd its default ( lenovo may charge you )

  • Erased recovery Partition, what can I do?

    Update
Just called to Technical support again, they provided me with the web site to purchase the recovery media! Can't complain too much, though it costs £23.
    Hi there,
I picked up a 2nd hand X201 (3680) from Amazon UK, however, I found that the recovery partition was deleted by previous owner. According to the previous owner, he has upgraded the machine to windows 7 Pro.
so I called up technical support, the rep told me that the laptop originally was come with windows XP then I argued  that the windows certificate label on the bottom is windows 7 Pro. The rep then suggested that the machine was CTO, so they cannot provide any windows 7 recovery media. Although I don't need to do any recovery at the moment, I just worry I may need to restore it in the future!!
So what would you suggest me to do?

    Hi lawhuiyiu
Sorry to hear about your anger. Calm down. It would be better if you could discuss with them in a friendly manner, things are likely to be better.
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/W-Series-ThinkPad-Laptops/Friendly-Complaints-and-Suggestions/td-p/53219...
I am not sure whether is this option available in your country. My suggestion is:
    1. Carry-in your ThinkPad and asked them to borrow the recovery media and recover your Windows 7 on the spot in the service centre. (If you bring there just to borrow disc for recover image, it should be free of charge).
*You could call them first and ask nicely for availability of the recovery disc.
    2. While it restores, it should also automatically restore back the Recovery Partition
    3. To be safe and prevent any problems in the future, create USB or multiple DVD Bootable Recovery Disc in case the hard drive malfunctioned.
    Cheers
    Peter

  • Lenovo Win 7 Pro Upgrade - Recovery Partition?

If this has been covered already then I apologize in advance, but it would be appreciated if someone would  respond to the following:
I recently upgraded my T61 to Windows 7 Pro using the two-disc set from Lenovo.  To preserve my original XP pro setup, I used a new Seagate 250 GB hard drive for the Windows 7 upgrade.  One of the first steps of the installation was an automatic setup of two partitions (one of 232 GB and another of about 18 GB).  Then the process loaded the Windows 7 operating system on the larger one.  The final step was to use the campanion disc to upload Lenovo specific software (ThinkVantage Toolbox).  Using Toolbox, I installed the appropriate drivers from Lenovo's website and Windows 7 pro works just fine.  However, it's not clear if restoration files were loaded to the drive's smaller partition as one gets when he/she gets installs the Lenovo version of Windows XP pro.  Moreover, the Windows 7 upgrade does not seemed to provide Lenovo-specific wallpaper, etc. as with Windows XP.  In short, can one restore Windows 7 from a recovery partition as is possible with the Lenovo's version of XP Pro?

    Hi TEF,
    Welcome to the forum!
The answer to your question is yes, recovery partition does get created during the upgrade process/clean installation. If you decide on installing Win 7 on old drive then make sure to create recovery discs for XP in advance because during the upgrade Win 7 set from lenovo deletes old recovery partition.
As to which OS the thinkvatage button will restore to, take a look at this thread:- http://forum.lenovo.com/t5/Windows-7-Discussion/Windows-7-upgrade-discs-will-include-the-option-for-... [especially last post from milliken]
