Map a drive from Windows 2000 to Solaris directory

Solaris is new to me. So, please forgive me if I do not have technical terms correct. We recently installed Solaris (SunOS 5.7). Is there a way to map a drive to a Solaris directory from a Windows 2000 workstation? I tried to do a NET USE j: \\123.123.123.123\home /user:root *, and I receive the following error:
System error 67 has occurred.
The network name cannot be found.
Is there something I need to do on the server to make this work? I was reading about the share command in Solaris. Is this what I need?
Thanks in advance!
Tim

You will need to install Samba on your UNIX box or install Microsoft Windows Services for UNIX...
Samba is probably easiest...both are free...

  • From Windows 2000 to Solaries

I have windows 2000 with IIS server as web server and ASP for webapplication development. A new server of SUN Ultra with solaries 9 is installed. I want to know how can i switch over from Windows platform to Solaries. I also want to know how to setup a Apache web server

Since ASP doesn't run natively on any UNIX, you're going to need some extra software.
I found the following article which seems to explain a lot about the subject matter. It also makes a suggestion which software to use.

  • Map network drive from windows 98 to server 2008 R2

Guys I have some old Windows 98 systems these 98 systems are attached to pieces of equipment on the warehouse floor. So with that said there is no way to upgrade them. I would like to map a network drive from these 98 systems to a 2008 R2 file server.
I have played around with LM compatibility mode but I'm not having much luck. Still when I try to access a share on a 2008 R2 box I'm being asked to entire a password. On the old 2003 server all I had to do was create a local account with the same username
and password on the 2003 server. So if anyone's done this I would be curious in knowing more. BTW the member server I'm trying to connect to is in a domain and the 98 box is in a workgroup.

    Hi,
As Windows 98 is such an old system, I may make mistake on suggestions I provided so please just have a try.
For old client system like Windows XP, in a workgroup environment we have 2 mentions to share folders.
    1. As you said, create local account with same password on each computers so they can access each other with that account.
    2. Share folders to Everyone (including Guest) and enable Guest account on computers which going to access.
You can try to enable Guest account and set a same password on each computer as a test.
Also in Windows XP we need to modify "Simple File Sharing" option. I cannot confirm if it exists on Windows 98 system but if it does, enable it when trying suggestion 2 and disable it when trying suggestion 1.

  • I can't map a network drive from Windows 7, using the exact same settings that work fine with Vista or XP

I have Windows 7  64 bit Home Premium, and I can't map a network drive.  I use a Cisco VPN client to connect to my University network, and then when I go to map the drive I get a message that it can't be found.  I have done web research it seems that I am unable to edit the local security settings (apparently you can do this in Ultimate and Professional versions), and that this may be the culprit.  Does Microsoft make some patch available?  My IT people, and the tech help at HP are baffled by this.  If Windows 7 Home Premium does not allow for mapping of network drives, then I'm dumping it and returning to Vista.  Has anybody had similar problems?

Day 2 of trying to map a drive in Windows 7 Professional:
    My journey to ____..
    Begins:
I purchased Windows 7 Home 3xuser license pack for ~140 US I kep hearing friend sayhow much faster it was than Vista 32bit so I thought hey let’s “upgrade”
.. I looked up the definition of the word “upgrade” the following is what I found:
    1.
To exchange a possession for one of greater value or quality; trade up.
    2.
    Computer Science
To replace software or hardware with an upgrade.
    3.
    Computer Science
    a.
To replace (a software program) with a more recently released, enhanced version.
    b.
To replace (a hardware device) with one that provides better performance.
So we,re all clear on what an upgrade is suppose to be. I wanted tomake sure I understood before I proceeded.
I installed a copy on my latptop Toshiba Centrino 1.83 Ghz/3 G Ram decent computer for all intent and purposes. It’s been working fine
on Vista but running slow. So I went through MS “requirements checking” to determine if my computer passed the MS test and worth of such the honor and also get MS’s blessing before I moved forward with the “upgrade”.
I proceeded with the upgrade went relatively smoothly had to uninstall a few programs but I figure that’s such a
small price to pay for such great enhancement that I will receive from my “upgrade”. Approximately 4 to 5 hours later after minimal reboots I was all set to go with my new upgraded OS. It was working as prescribed faster than Vista cleaner
interface sorta, helpful little taskbar gadgets. I was stoked that night I went to be thinking I will go to work and be a rock star on my brand newly “upgraded” computer.
Oh and by the way, I was so thrilled about Windows 7 I even upgrade my home computer as well.
I go into work and I have a very big user migration that night, I am an network engineer and I use my laptop for work I use Visio, Wireshark
and others, all the tools that help us do our job efficiently and effectively.
I sit down turn on my computer it boots faster than Vista and I’m just chomping at the bit to get going have lots of work to do. So let
go back for a minute an look at the definition of “upgrade”
    “3.
    Computer Science
    a.
To replace (a software program) with a more recently released,
    enhanced version.
    b.
To replace (a hardware device) with one that provides
    better performance.”
So were good on what upgrade is?
I have my computer up I have logged in (locally) not on a domain as I was not when I was on Vista OS. I wanted to attach the server to get some
files so I go to map a drive………………. Hmmmph ….. that’s weird I cannot map a drive …… let’s try this again……… hmmmph…. what this domain thing going here I
never need that before in the lesser product Vista but ok I’ll add my
\\servername\folder and my domain.org\username..... hit enter and hmmmmmph …. It ask me for my password again.. well I could have fat gingered it so I’ll type it in reallllllllly slow.. hmmmmmmph ….. again no such luck…
So I decide consult a colleague of mine who recommended I “upgrade” to Windows 7. After speaking with me he tells me oh! You need
Windows 7 Professional to do the same things you did in Vista home … I’m perplexed by this but let’s once more take a look at the word “upgrade” to “enhance
    and/or make better
”. So now I’m a little perturbed by this little bit of information but I suck it up and decide I’ll drop another ~100.00 US on an “upgrade” to Professional small price to pay for such a great product.. I mean have
    you seen those commercial WOW!
I make my purchase download and once “upgrade” to new “upgrade” with even more improvement over Vista and XP I mean
with those two OS’s it took me all of 5 second to map a drive SURELY Windows 7 Professional will map a drive like no one business.
    After
few reboots my computer has been fully “upgraded” and ‘upgrade” again to W7 Pro and I’m off to the races ready to get to work cause my migration will be starting in a few hours and I want to be prepared. Sytsem reboots quickly
I’m logged and ready to start getting my information I so desperately need. I go to map my drive I figure I’ll help W7Pro out I’ll be proactive and use “domain.org\username” that way W7Pro
will like me and think oh! this man is brilliant. I hit enter with my correct password that I type realllllly slow. …… waited it’s thinking for sure this is it .. the anticipation is killing me the excitement is overwhelming …….
THUD my world just came crashing down ..no luck .. no login ..no mapping drives…I’m now on hour 6 of this ridiculous journey to the “upgrade” to “upgrade” ____. So now I’m left to forum because MS surely does not
think I am going to pay them $275.00 and hour for support on something that should have work right out of the box.
So I’m on day to I have tried everything on this forum page to get my mapped drive to work with nothing working for me. It appears that
if I want to use my computer I will have to rolled back to the lesser (Vista).
Just in case you’re wondering how I made it through the user migration. I had my co-worker bring me my XP computer worked like it’s
    was suppose to.

  • Moving oracle 9i database from windows 2000 to windows 2003 server

    hi everybody,
plz provide me a solution how to move oracle 9i database from windows 2000 server to windows 2003 server with step by step and also with commands plz as i am very new to oracle
    thanks in advance
    suresh

Install 9i on windows 2003 server and patch to the same level as the Oracle on Windows 2k
Shutdown and make a cold backup of your old database. That includes datafiles, controlfiles, redo files, init file (spfile)
Copy and put these files to the exact same directory structure/location, for example if old file is under D:\oradata\mysid\ then the file on new file should be under same directory. (If you are using Network Storage that make things easier, just mapping to the same drive letter.)
Also make sure archive log dest and all dump dest directories are created. You don't have to copy all old logs and dump files over.
Use oradim to create a new service for the database instance
    http://www.psoug.org/reference/oradim.html
Set proper ORACLE_HOME, ORACLE_SID envionment varibles
Run netca to configure listener, actually copy listener.ora and tnsnames.ora to $ORACLE_HOME\network\admin will do
    Try to start the database

  • Location is not available to mapped network drive in Windows 8 using Synology NAS

    Original Thread:
    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows8_1-files/location-is-not-available-to-mapped-network-drive/ca7eac5c-0e3d-494b-b488-e245978e4db9
I have recently upgraded to Windows 8.1 standard edition. I have come across a problem when using the option for mapped network drives. Under Windows 7 I would normally map a network drive (Synology NAS) and I could access all files, copy and paste, install
apps, and link media, all from within the mapped network drive. However, under Windows 8.1 I have come across a couple of problems.
    1. When I try to copy a file from my "Mapped Network Drive" to the C:\Drive (OS Boot Drive), I get the following error,
"E:\ is unavailable. If the location is on this PC, make sure the device or drive is connected or the disc is inserted, and then try again. if the location is on a network, make sure you're connected to the network or internet, and then try again. If the
location still can't be found, it might have been moved or deleted."
However, if I copy a file from the "NETWORK/Network Location" the file copies just fine with no problems. And, If I also copy a file from a "Added Network Location" the file also copies just fine with no problems. And, if I copy a file from
my "Mapped Network Drive" to my D:\Drive (non OS Drive), the file copies just fine with no problems.
    2. When I try to install apps from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will sometimes install and sometimes not (I am also choosing the option to run the programs as Administrator). Again if I try to install using either the "NETWORK/Network Location"
or an "Added Network Location" the apps install just fine with no problems.
    3. When I link media (music or videos) from my "Mapped Network Drive" they will work but once I reboot they no longer work as if they have lost the file path or link of the original source location.
    4. When I use FireFox (browser) and I set my default download dir to my "Mapped Network Drive" it will work once originally set it but after I reboot, it no longer works. However, again if I set the default download dir to either the "NETWORK/Network
Location" or an "Added Network Location" the default download dir works fine even after reboot.
While I am able to access my network drive using any of the three options, "Mapped Network Drive", "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network Location" but only "NETWORK/Network Location", and "Added Network
Location"appear to be reliable. Tbh I would prefer to be able to use my "Mapped Network Drive" in Windows 8 as I have been able to under Windows 7.
    More info:
I currently have UAC set to "Never Notify".
I also have Windows 8.1 installed on three different systems and all of them give me the same exact problems. One of the systems is a completely clean install with no 3rd party apps installed.
Just so its clear I am able to access the "Mapped Network Drive" but unfortunately this method of access appears to be unreliable in Windows 8 but in Windows 7 it works flawlessly.
If I map a network drive from another pc running windows 7 or 8, I can access and use the mapped drive with no problems. This problem appears to be related to the Synology NAS devices and I have researched the Synology forums but only found one thread about
    the problem, here:
    http://forum.synology.com/enu/viewtopic.php?f=49&t=76687
I have searched several forums and attempted to pick the brains of my local computer shops for any incite on this problem but I have been unable to find a solution/fix.
Any help resolving this is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
Based on your description, we can temporarily disable the firewall to see whether the issue persists.
For this issue seems related to the Synology NAS devices, in order to get professional help regarding the product, we can contact the vendor support to see whether the issue
    can be fixed.

  • Migrate print server from Windows 2000 to Windows 2008 R2

    Hi,
Want to transfer NTFS permission of printers from Windows 2000 to Windows 2008 R2.
Any method can do it ??
    Thanks

From your description, I understand that you want to copy ntfs permission of printer  folder
    from one server to another.
you can use subinacl to do the same..
To backup the permissions of the folder, subfolders and files on folder called Data on the G: drive:
    subinacl /noverbose /output=c:\ntfs_perms.txt /subdirectories G:\data\
If you wanted to just backup the NTFS permissions for the entire drive, the command would look like this:
    subinacl /noverbose /output=c:\ntfs_G_drive_perms.txt /subdirectories G:\*.*
Most of you will probably not be concerned with backing up down to the file level, and are satisfied with just backing up the permissions at the directory level.  Backing up the permissions for just the directories can be
    achieved with the following syntax:
    subinacl /noverbose /output=c:\G_driveNTFSperms.txt /subdirectories=directoriesonly G:\*.*
To restore the permissions on the drive using the file that you backed them up to:
    Subinacl /playfile c:\G_driveNTFSperms.txt

  • Upgrading from Windows 2000 to XP

Help! I have my iPod installed on my work computer and my office is getting ready to upgrade my computer from Windows 2000 to Windows XP. Our IT department won't transfer personal music files. I don't want to lose the music in iTunes, what can I do?

Back them up to an external drive, DVD, or CD? This is generally a good idea even when you're not planning and upgrade...Apple won't let you re-download tracks you bought and downloaded, and You don't really want to spend all that time re-importing CDs.
An external hard drive is one good way to back up the music; they've come down a lot in price recently. If you have a DVD burner, you could back up your music onto DVDs (I don't know how much music you have, but each DVD holds 4.7GB). Barring that, you could back up onto data CDs, which hold about 700 MB each.

    Hi everyone,
I'm having some problems with my DVD rewriter drive on my Satellite U200-115.
It works very intermittently and whenever I power up the machine, the first notice I get is 'cd-rom error' even though there is no disc in the drive.
I can't activate the drive from windows either (icon in system tray).
There is the odd occassion when the drive does work in windows but this is so infrequent that I can't remember the last time (I think it was back in Nov 08).
I want to restore the system as I am getting a lot of windows file icons instead of the proper icons for images e.g. pdf, doc, etc. but am worried that the drive wont read the disc or will stop working during the recovery process.
Any ideas would be gratefully received.
    Best WIshes
    Nick

If its a software issue the drive will not stop working during the recovery procedure.
Do you get a CD-ROM error in Windows?
You could try to boot from a Linux boot disk. If this work it would be a software problem and not a hardware problem.

  • Map Network drive in Windows 8.1

    Hi Guys,
I was suffering a weird problem about mapping network drive in Windows 8.1.
I ran the command "net use ...." to map a network drive and the command was running successfully. Then I used the "net use" command to check the status for the network drive mapped before, it showed good. But when I opened "my computer",
I couldn't see the network drive mapped before in the explorer.

    Hi,
After you created the mapped network drive with "net use", are you able to find the mapped driver letter information in the registry HKCU\Network?
Please also try to map the network drive via GUI tool under Explorer "Map network drive" option, check the result.
for net use command, please make sure that you've set the correct parameters

We have one TS running on Windows 2000. There are over 200 TS users. We are planning to migrate it to Windows 2008 R2. What's the easy way to migrate the roaming profile? Base on this article

    support.microsoft.com

There are two methods to migrate roaming profile. "Method 2: Use the Folder Redirection feature to share data between Version 1 and Version 2 user profiles" doesn't "migrate the desktop settings and preferences such as wallpaper because of
the differences in the operating systems". That isn't for us.
"Method 1: Use the User State Migration Tool to migrate profile data to the new format (Windows Vista Only)" is recommend that you the User State Migration Tool (USMT) to migrate profile data in the following scenarios:
You do not use roaming user profiles or folder redirection.
You want to enable a more full-featured migration of user profile data from Windows 2000-based or from Windows XP-based systems to Windows Vista-based systems.
Note The User State Migraton Tool will not function on Windows Server 2008.
