Map art on 3d sphere

I'm trying to map 12 basic flower symbols on a 3d sphere in Illustrator CS4 and can't seem to get past the distortion.
Basically, I'm looking for a template/action/plugin that would help me pre-distort the symbols like an equirectangular projection for maps.
Any ideas? Thx

  • Question about mapping art to a 3d object

I'm looking for help with mapping art to a 3d object using the extrude and bevel effect, and I keep running into the same issues.
I've attached an image of what I'm trying to replicate (on the left) and where I am currently at (on the right). The left image is what we're looking to duplicate, in a 3d manner, but I'm not able to add the roll tail (which now needs to have a bit of a curve coming towards you), without there being numerous surfaces in the 'map art' box. What I am hoping is that there is a way to create one surface that wraps completely around the roll, and then down to the tail, and curling towards the viewer. Currently when I do this it creates numerous surfaces so I have to map the art to piece it together and it doesn't line up with the other mapped art. I would so appreciate any help you can offer!
Also, I'm not able to get a great shadow inside the roll, is there something I'm missing with the lighting options?
    Thank you!
(Using AI CS6 on a PC)

    I managed this quickly:
for some reason it split the top surface of the reel into two though. the divide is at the top. I just mapped the symbol to both so it looks like it's going all round.

  • Map Art in Illustrator

Hello everybody, I am trying to map certain symbols into a 3D form, but I am having trouble as to how should I draw the form in order for the symbols to map, what I am trying to accomplish is to map the symbols which are letters into a shape similar to casino rods, here's an aimage to give a better idea, if someone can help telling me what is the shape that I should draw so I can map the symbols on it that will be great, thank you very much.

Here it is with letters turned into symbols mapped onto them.

  • How can I create a 3D baseball with art mapped to it?

I am creating art for work that will be printed on both soccer balls and baseballs. This art needs to be made into a mockup to represent the final product. I made this for the soccer balls: Gyazo - 3cbfe225e8afa3d95be87fdd12947ec4.png
However, I am having quite a bit of trouble creating a baseball mockup. The art for the baseballs is made like so: Gyazo - cf149ec936018af2abfe465700de07db.png
For the soccer ball, I merely wrapped the flattened art around a sphere and put effects on top. The top bit is somewhat skewed, but this doesn't have to be perfect, just good enough to show potential customers.
I need a faster way to mock up the baseballs rather than what I have been doing. I have been taking the bits of art, cutting them down, warping them, and then trying to paint lighting and shadows on them, but they are looking badly done and are extremely time consuming. I wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions of how I can do this a better/smarter/easier way.
Here is what I have now: Gyazo - c7f2573adcbe273f0072cfac7f1e1edf.png
It's not terrible, but not as good as the soccer balls, also, we really liked the ability to move them around showing the other sides.
I appreciate any help you can give me!
    Thanks everyone!

I have made a quick example for you (in LV 6.0) showing how to create a 3D curve graph from a string array/table.
Basically you need to convert the string array to a numerical array, then extract each column (x, y and z) and wire to the graph.
    I hope this helps you.

  • Mapping pictures to a cylinder or sphere

    Hi,
first of all, i would like to say , from past half an hour i am trying to post a question but i am unable to find the link to post a msg, its better if u provide a tab to post a question there we can search for the particular forum.
i have seen a question tht was askd in the illustrator -> discussions , mapping pictures to a sphere, i have the same problem but i have add the pictures to 3D objects like cup, basket ball.i am working on flex3. i have used away3D engine to solve tht but the picture is occupying the whole object, like its adding the picture to top and bottom also. plz provide me help. i tried to search for a contact to Mr.scott falkner who provided soln in tht thread but i am not able to get his e-mail and not able to post this ques to him directly thru adobe forum..i dont know now also whether he can see this post or not.. but any one who worked on it plz help.

In photoshop extended this is possible like such you create a sphere fro a background layer  as a 3D shape and then another layer with the eimage and then merge down.
Go to the photoshop forum if this is not what what you want I do not think it is actually possible in any program. This is the simplest mapping feature I know of in an application that is not a dedicaed 3Dmodeling program. You can do this with text as well.

  • AE CS5: My Illustrator map is totally blurry after applying CC Sphere

    Please see these screen grabs.
Please download the images to see them full size.
I have a vector map of the world that I created in Adobe Illustrator for a documentary about World War I.
But when I wrap my map around the "CC Sphere" to create a globe, any dolly in/zoom in/scale up causes the borders of the states to become totally blurry. This DOESN'T happen when the map is in 2D. Notice that in the screen grab "MAP-SHARP BORDERS" I have upscaled my map to 700% and it remains tack sharp because it's a vector map. So why isn't this the case after applying the CC Sphere effect?
Am I even using the right plug-in??? I thought that CC Sphere was the way to go to wrap a map round a globe. But I want to be able to zoom in without getting a blurry image. Even though I have "continuously rasterize" turned on, it doesn't seem to work with CC Sphere.
Thanks in advance for any help on this issue.

  • Something weird when trying to make a sphere in illustrator cs4

I'm trying to make a sphere in CS4 out of a revolved semicircle and apply a pattern on it. But after I press revolve and try to visualize the map art, so that I can place the pattern on the sphere, the map art doesn't fit precisely on the object. The gridded sphere is displaced leftwards and upwards from the original sphere. Therefore, I can't apply the pattern as I want to.

When I leave out the 2222,Dreamweaver can't make a connection to the server.
I don't know about the use of port 2222, but your testing server definition is completely wrong.
The testing server folder must be a physical path, not a URL. And the URL prefix must be a valid URL. public_html is the name of the web server's document root, it should never be part of a URL.
Judging from the details you have given here, you are using your remote server for testing. In the Testing server section of the site definition, set Access to FTP. The value of Host directory should be what your hosting company tells you to use when logging in. For some hosting companies, you use public_html on its own. Other companies tell you to leave the value blank or to use just /.
The URL prefix is just the URL for the site.

  • Is it possible to draw a sphere on illustrator?

How would I draw a sphere on illustrator?
I saw how to do 3D objects, but still do not know how to do a sphere, if it is even possible.
    Thank you

As Joe writes you create your art first the n drag it to the symbol panel and then in the 3D Effect dialog you choose map Art then in the Map art dialog
you choose the surface you want and then select the symbol you made of your art. Turn on the preview to see what you are doing.

  • Mapping artwork onto 3D shapes

How do you map artwork onto an extruded shape?

drag the artwork to the symbols palette first. then you can choose it and the surface you want to map it to in the Map art options for the 3D effect.

  • Pixelated Problem with 3D Mapping in Illustrator.

So here's the situation as best as I can recount it. I created a 3-d revolved bottle and lid in Illustrator, back in probably CS2. Since then, I have been unable to get the bottle, or it's mapped image to appear anything but pixelated and nasty. Which makes it pretty useless, really. Recent 3-d revolves with mapping seem crisp. Is this original file just unusable and broken in some way? I have tried re-mapping the imagery and re-creating the symbol used for mapping and have not produced any different a result. My only other thought is to get a real bottle, print the label for real somewhere and take a photograph if I can't get this to work. ;) So, is this a new problem, or a problem from an earlier file? Has anyone else had this issue? I'm using CS3 now on a Mac G5. The file opens in CS3 fine, although I did have to re-map the image map symbol for some reason.. it seemed to think it was on the back or inside of the bottle when I opened the original file.
I know this is pretty vague, but I really don't have much experience with 3D mapping in illustrator.

Ok, I believe that fixed the mapped art's resolution issues. But one other question, the 3-d bottle that the artwork is mapped to, has a rough edge to it that is still pixelated. I can take it into photoshop and clip out that 'edge' if need be, but I'm still wondering if there is a setting I'm missing here. Thanks again for all your help!

  • Even mapping onto 3d object in Illustrator CS3

Having a wee bit of a problem here - I have created artwork for a display stand and, to demonstrate how this will look, I'm trying to make a 3 mockup in illustrator CS3.
I've created a top down shape for the object which I then extrude and map the image on to - this is where the problem arises! Illustrator seems to 'bunch' the mapped image around points where curves are tighter (presumably due the increase in vertices there) rather than mapping it evenly around the surface. This causes some rather undesirable warping of the image which rather ruins the effect!
Can anyone tell me a way of avoiding this?
    Many thanks!

But did you have to reposition the mapped symbol, since adding anchors also add surfaces
No. I did exactly what my instructions indicated: I simply positioned the Symbol for mapping onto the front surface, with no scaling. After Illusrtator rendered the result, I selected Add AnchorPoints twice.
The distortion was due to the extended handles of the middle point which gives the front surface its concave shape. Adding anchorPoints effectively shortens the handles, thereby lessening their distortion effect. That does not necessarily add surfaces to the model. A 3D Effect model does not necessarily create additional surfaces for each "patch" defined by anchorPoints. You can see that easily by simply extruding a filled, unstroked ellipse into a cylinder with open endcaps: One surface, despite the four anchorpoints in the section.
Moreover, with the preview checkbox on, the 3D Effect interface highlights the surfaces on your model as you page through them in the Map Art dialog.
OF COURSE the model's section path needs to be drawn with some sense about what 3D Effect will have to do to it geometrically, and about the scale of the 3D model settings relative to the size and aspect ratio of the mapped artwork (thus my admonitions to that effect in my second post). One can't just willy-nilly apply elaborate automatic effects to any carelessly-drawn path and expect results to work right. But assuming appropriately-drawn sections for the extrusion, adding anchorPoints can be an effective means by which to correct distortion caused by long curve handles--just as it can also be used to more closely approximate uniform spacing of Blend steps along curves spines. The long radius concave front of a trade show backdrop is a case-in-point.

  • Symbol not mapping onto 3d image

I'm trying to draw a coin and have successfully mapped the head onto one side of the coin, but for some reason tails isn't mapping. I did the exact same thing to tails as I did to head - I turned the vector image into a symbol and then map it onto a face. It's not a problem with the face because when i switch the positions of the heads and the tails, the heads shows up and the tails still doesn't show up.
Does anyone know what's going on?
The heads is below, and the tails simply does not show up.

  • I need help recreating this

I would like to create something like this.
I have tried myself and just got frustrated.  I made a custom shape and copied it and changed color, shape, direction and size. I made a symbol out of it and mapped it on a sphere shape but it just came out looking odd. I'm not sure what I need to do, maybe make a bigger symbol.
    Hopefully someone can help.
    Thanks in advance
    PC, CS5

Close but you can do this either with the sybol spayer tool and symbol stainer tool or create a pattern and fill a shape with the pattern and make that filled shape a symbol.
    1. make one symbol and use the Symbol Sprayer to make your cluster you have too double click the tool to adjust the intensity etc.
    2. recolor that cluster using the Stainer tool.
    3. Make a 3D sphere and choose Map Art
    4. Choose Invisible Geometery and map art make sure yiour origianal half circle path has no stroke.
    5. Map your cluster symbol
6 Alternat Make a pattern usig the Pattern Option Panel. you make several copies of the shape with different fills and make the pattern from that group
    7. Fill a shape witht he pattern and make it a ssymbol and follow steps 3-5
One onther althernative is you can arrange the shapes manually as well and turn that group into a symbol as well
I over did it here but

  • How to make a line with arrow curve around a circle?

I've got CS6 and Windows 7. Trying to make a line with an arrow on one end curve around a circle. Actually want it to have a 3D look like it was curving around the back side of a globe. How do you do this? Thanks.

Perhaps you mean something more like this
similar technique you create the arrow as a straight stroke path with an arrowhead and make it a symbol
You then make it a symbol
you than make a vertical rectangle and use the 3D Revolve Effect to make a cylinder
then you go to map art
then you choose in the map art to make the geomtery invisible
then you ma the arrow symbol and adjust the placement and then adjust the rotation of the cylinder to your likeing.
If you need a video to follow I'll do one later.
