Map/gps app recommendations

I have a 3rd generation ipad, wifi only. I'd like to use it for a walking/mapping aid around cities on an upcoming road trip. I know I'll need some kind of GPS receiver for it and also a map app. Does anyone have recommendations as to which (and whether there's a particular combination that work well together)?

Look at http://bad-elf.com/, They have an employee that also participates here regularly, ( I forget his name though)
Good reviews.

  • GPS App recommendations

Hello Everyone. I'm looking to start using my iPad mini as a GPS for my car instead of purchasing a new Garmin (stopped working yesterday).
Any suggestions on what the best app would be?    Suggestions on mounting the iPad mini in the car?
    Thanks.

I use copilot but only because it was cheap it's not good in the country where I live
but garmin and tomtom which are good cost somewhat more

  • Please recommend GPS App for Tour

Hello, I have Verizon Wireless and would like to purchase a GPS for my BlackBerry Tour.  I see that there are a lot of different options.  I simply want a GPS that works like a Garmin, where it displays the streets and has a voice that tells me when to turn. I do have GPS activated on the phone so I just need an App that works with it other than Google Maps.  I tried a couple of free GPS apps and they sucked so I know that I have to pay if I want a good app. Please recommend me such a GPS app.  Thank you.

This is not much of a solution, but if you switch to Sprint, they give you a free GPS application that works just like your Magellan/Garmin/etc.
I would quite literally be lost without my Sprint Maps

  • How capable are GPS apps (maps, Star Walk, Sun Seeker, etc) on a Wifi-only iPad3?

I wanted to know how effective GPS apps are without a GPS chip as in the Wifi-only iPad3.  Most importantly will they still work in situations like : Driving a car in a big city? driving on the freeway? in a national park? and of course at home?
I don't see myself getting a carrier plan for it, so the LTE/3G isn't so useful as the RAM.  But the lack of GPS is compelling. Thank you for your thoughts!

If you have the wifi-only iPad then unless you are connected to a wifi network (or preferably have one of the external GPS units that work with the iPad e.g. this one from Bad Elf has been mentioned a few times on here), then you won't get a location - and as not all wifi networks are in the database that Apple uses, even if you are connected to a wifi network you may not get a location from it, or you may potentially get an inaccurate location.

  • Looking for an iPhone GPS app comparable to Android

I am getting ready to switch from my DroidX to the iPhone 4s.   The only thing that is holding me up is the GPS.  The one I have on my DroidX works great.  I can speak into the phone and say something like "Target", and it displays the nearest Target stores.  I select one, and it then gives me voice-enabled turn-by-turn directions.  If I go the wrong way, it recalculates and gives me new directions.    The maps are always up to date.  When we crossed from NY into Canada, the GPS adapted accordingly, and didn't miss a beat.
The native iPhone GPS app doesn't seem to be as good.  I'm spoiled.  Is there a comparable GPS app that will run on the iPhone?
    Thanks!

I'd recommend Navigon. There are different bundles (U.S. East Region, North America, etc...). . Yes, you do have to pay and it is a large file (1.7GB currently). However, updates are free. From my understanding, the Navigon app map data is stored on your phone and will work without a GPS signal. (I haven't had to use it in such a manner.) Google Maps Navigation for Android is great but a data connection is always required. And, in my experience, Navigon directions have been more accurate than Google Maps. The MapQuest app is free but ad content is visible.

  • Looking for a gps app that does

I'm new to the iPhone  5.
Is there a gps App that allows you to bookmark locations, gives you the coordinates, then you are able to name and store the location?
If i'm standing in a location I want to bookmark it or find a location on a map and bookmark it, then have navigation to that location?
    Thanks for any help

    The built in Maps app.

  • What is a good gps app for ipad2 ?

What is a good gps app for ipad2?

Good for what?  That would depend on what you want to use it for.  Also, it would depend on whether you have a 3G unit.  Without 3G to stream maps, the GPS would be mostly worthless for on-the-move navigation.
Even with 3G, it would be real easy to blow right past the 256MB plan and even the 2GB plan while out and about.

  • What is a good GPS app for iPad?

I just got a new 3G iPad and am searching for a good GPS app that I can use without a data connection. I really don't want to spend mega money just to try out different apps. Thanks!

I bought CoPilot Live HD for my iPad 3GS about 2 weeks ago. Overall, I would consider this to be a very good navigation app. I've found some quirks with it but I would give it 4 of 5 stars.
This app works either standalone or with a WiFi or 3G mobile connection (via AT&T) but I have had no reason to use the 3G connection as yet. It is only really needed for CoPilot's "Live" (that is, real-time info) feature. We have been traveling around Alaska for the past month and have given CoPilot a very thorough workout. Among the quirks we've encountered are:
    * Inability to retain/restore app data when doing a reinstall.
    * Difficulties creating and updating user-entered points of interest.
    * Difficulties using the "Save Current Location" feature.
    * Difficulties using the "Enter Location By Coordinates" feature.
    * Some features of CoPilot not available in iPad and iPhone version.
None of these was a deal-breaker by any means. I would definitely recommend this app to anyone who travels a lot and needs a reliable navigation aid.

Thanks for the link but still no luck with my gps apps...
    Tried the following tips:
    1) Installed GPS Status.  Reset AGPS -> restarted phone -> DL new AGPS
    2) After clearing this data, you will want to turn the phone off and then back on again.
We'll, first, want to make sure that location services are enabled. To enable Location, go to Home > Menu > Settings > Location.
On this screen, you will see a check-box for allowing Wi-fi or Data connection (Use Wireless Networks) to detect Location, and also a check-box for GPS Satelittes being able to detect your Location. For Location to detect properly, either one of the two data sources needs to be turned ON (this is not optional, as all data needs to be passed through a Google server), and the check box for allowing data connection to detect your Location needs to be checked.
If Location is enabled, there may be a setting such as Auto-Sync or Background data that is not that does not allow the Weather/GPS to update itself. To ensure that this is working properly, go to Home > Menu > Settings > Accounts & Sync. Check the boxes for Auto-Sync and Background data.
You will also want to make sure that a development option called "Mock location" is turned off. Go to Menu > Settings > Applications > Development > Uncheck "Allow Mock Locations". Having this checked will not allow the phone to accurately pinpoint your Location.
Also, if you're using Advanced Task Killer, or similiar application, this could be disabling the process for detecting GPS. Try removing any 3rd party task management software.
This could be the result of the phone using only cached data. You can also clear the Application data for Weather & maps, forcing the phone to download all new information. To do this, navigate to:
    Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Weather. Clear Data/Cache.
    Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Maps. Clear Data/Cache.

  • GPS apps take me to a place I've never been

When I've got crappy accuracy (most of the time) any GPS based app will take me to a place about 5 miles from my house that I've never been to in my life. Ever. It's the same place and every GPS app shows me in this spot. Some of the apps that have exhibited this behavior are: Google Map, Trails, EveryTrail, MotionX GPS, and on and on. Since this occurs in all apps I've pretty much determined that it's a hardware issue. I was really hoping that a reset of my 3GS would cure this problem but no.
I updated to iOS 4 and that went well. I thought maybe that would do the trick but no joy there either.
This is really frustrating because I use my iPhone and Trails app to log and keep track of my daily walk/runs. In the middle of a run the GPS accuracy will go in the crapper and I'll all of the sudden be transported (in the app) to this phantom spot about 5 miles away from where I'm at adding, you guessed it, 5 miles to my walk/run.
I really want to get rid of this spot. Is there anyway for me to get rid of it? Is there a setting that controls this? Why does my phone insist on showing me this spot and claiming I'm there when GPS accuracy *****? As I've said, I've never been to this place!
Thanks in advance for any help.
    Joe

Initially, this sounds more of an environmental issue than a hardware.
A couple of things to ask..
Does the glitch only happen in your area? If you go for a drive 50 or 100kms away and use it in that area, does the location go off somewhere in that area too and put show you in a strange place after a period of time? Or does this issue seem to only happen in your area?
Also when it goes off to this other place, if you do nothing and just keep walking, running or what ever you are doing, does it eventually find you again in the correct location?
I'm wondering if you are a getting a conflict between the GPS location and the Cell Tower/WiFi locations when you are in a certain place and one overrides the other.

  • What is the best GPS app for an iPhone 4s?

What is the best GPS app for an iPhone 4s?

There are several things to consider.  For instance many GPS apps download maps on the fly.  If you don't have an unlimited cellular data plan this can use a lot of your data allotment.  Other apps like Tom Tom and CoPilot Live save all the maps on the device.  The maps will take up a lot of memory on your iPhone.  I use CoPilot Live Premium and the maps take up about 2GB of memory.
Then there is a matter of cost.  Most apps that download maps on the fly are free or a very low cost.  The ones that store the maps on the iPhone generally cost more.
I use Copilot Live Premium HD US because it gives me all the features I need for a relatively low cost, about $20 USD.

  • GPS app questions

Do these GPS apps, whether a paid tom-tom or the free ones, use actually GPS or is it thru the cellular triangulation?

It depends on which app you use. Some of the apps download the maps on the fly, which in turn will require that you have a cell connection.
Other apps will download the entire pack of maps for a country when you buy it. They typically will take up about 1 gig on your phone. Just be sure that you clearly read the descriptions for the app before you buy it.

  • Droid eris gps app

is there a good free gps app for the droid eris?

With the 2.1 upgrade, google maps has built-in GPS nav. Is that not what you are looking for?

  • Can you use GPS app while talking on the phone at the same time?

Hi I'm just curious because I will be getting a iPhone 4 in May and I wanted to know if it's possible to be in a phone call while also using an GPS app?
Does the GPS app use the data connection or the GPS signal or satellites?
    Thanks a bunch!
    Bruce

Thanks and I also did some research and found out that with GPS active, if you load your route/directions prior to making a phone call the route will be cached and navigation still works. The GPS will tell you where you are along the route.
But if you're on the phone and then try to load a map or navigation it will not load your route until it can download the map, meaning you will need to wait until you get off the phone call to download the info.
So if you know you will need to use navigation, turn on your GPS, load your map/route to start navigation, then make your phone call. Makes sense to me now and if anyone needs to know here is the solution right here.

  • What is the Best Offline gps app for ipad 2 ( wifi ) ?

    Hi
i just want to know what is the best offline gps app for ipad 2 wifi only ?
specially for ( Malaysia and UAE )  ? and thanks

I used my wifi only pad in Ireland and uk, and as pointed out, the wifi has no gps.
I bought a 'bad elf' external receiver.  Worked fine, is small, and idiot proof.
Then you need a map set.  There are a lot of choices, I ended up using' offmaps', and bought the 'unlimited,  and it was fine.   No point to point directions, but you can find where you are trying to go and the maps themselves were accurate and up to date.   Note, that may vary as you get around the world.
The elf cost 100, and the unlimited maps was, I think, $5.00.
The option was to simply buy a local garmin or Tom Tom when you get there.   As a gizmo guy, I went the elf approach.
The only downside of the elf is that it is so small, it is easy to lose it in a pocket or backpack.
