Map is unable to show my current location

The map provided with the iMac (purchased in Nov-2013), is unable to show my current location. It is asking to turn the Wifi on and then failing to specify or if at all specifying, is not very clear to me. For that reason, getting direction to a place is also not working. Is there any wrong with my settings? Moreover, google map appears to me more varsatile and dynamic -- is it true? I am a newcomer to mac platform and hence these quaries.

Your iMac (well, any Mac) does not have a GPS. To determine location it matches the available WiFi SSIDs with a database of the base station locations. If the wireless access points that your iMac is receiving are not in the database, it deosn't know where it is.
This article talks primarily about iOS, but it is the same database that is used by OS X to locate you Mac.

Also, take a look at this thread. It doesn't appear there is positive confirmation that it works, but worth a try:

When Apple started this, I had submitted my router location to the SkyHook system which they were using, but everyone says they no longer use it.

    please help..

That happens if you are indoors and the App canot locate your GPS location.
You may have to take your PB outside for a minute or so so it can get a fix on your location.
Have you tried Google Maps or the MapApp from App World that also uses Google Maps?
They are much better than Bing Map.

    Hi,
I was facing the same issue with my Ipad - wifi.
I have found a simple solution for this but it needs you to have a iphone and period of one week.
if wifi router's mac address is not registered with apple's location services server, the location services on Ipad-wifi does not work, so we need to register wifi router's mac address to apple's server in first place.
If you have a iphone, then try to install 'Find my iphone' app. install it on your ipad also.
Initially when you login to this app with both iphone and ipad, only your Iphone will show location as it has GPS location. and your ipad location will not be reflected on this app.
If you continue to find your ipad using this app on you Iphone, and using your home wifi router, eventually after few days you would be able to track you ipad location, because your wifi router's mac address get registered on apple's server with its gps co-odridnates.
This has worked for my on 3 different wifi routers in last 8 months.
    Hope this will hope you.

  • Just purchased new iPad.  Map app shows my current location in another city.  Can't figure out how to change to correct address.

QUESTION - just purchased iPad 2.  Map app shows my 'current location' in another city.  I can't figure out how to correct the address.

That is a problem with the WiFi-only iPads.  Location is determined by the routers "within reach" of your iPad.  There apparently is a database somewhere that tracks the location of routers and that is used to determine the location of the iPad.  It's been known to produce some really cockamamie results.
In my case, it was off by a reliable 200 yards for maybe the first year that I owned the iPad.  Then it mysteriously began to recognize my actual location.

  • I'm having trouble with "maps" on Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone.  It shows my current location and hour away from where I am.  As soon as a move iPhone away from my wifi at home to cellular it shows my correct location.  No help from Time Warner.

What can I do to get "maps" to work on my Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone when connected to wifi at home.  iPhone "maps" work fine when connected to cellular service. Maps on wifi shows me about 55 minutes away from my current location.  Very frustrating.  I called Time Warne,r my service provider, but they had no answers since they were not knowledgeable of this situation.  Anyone else having problem?  I just updated all devices to newest update.  Is that the problem.

Did you bring your wireless router with you? If so, it's possible the iPad is getting its location through the router and the router still "thinks" it's where you used to live.
Try taking your iPad to another location where there is wifi (such as a coffee shop). Then, try an app that uses location services. If it's accurate at another location, then the source of your problem is your router.

  • My MacBook Pro with Retina display shows wrong current location

I purchased my MacBook Pro when I was a student at a particular university in Hawaii. After I graduated, I moved back to my home country in the Philippines. When I use Google Maps or Bing Maps to show me my current location which is now in the Philippines, it still shows that I'm still at that university in Hawaii. I tried using the Find My iPhone App, it shows my iPhone's and MacBook Pro's location in Hawaii but not at my current location in the Philippines. I tried resetting the PRAM, changing region settings, and even my timezone manually, but still having that wrong location info whiich I need in case I lose my iDevices and try to locate them and they'll all point to Hawaii!
    Please help! Thank you!

It works now with other browsers - Chrome and Firefox. They show my location, but in Safari, it still shows I'm in Hawaii and even in the Time Zone settings in Sys Preferences. This bugs me a lot. I reset Safari and still shows me I'm in Hawaii. I used Google Maps and Bing Maps to locate me at my current location but the system still shows I'm in Hawaii although Chrome and Firefox now shows that I'm in the Philippines. So I tried resetiing the CoreLocationAgent service again and got an error. It said Failed to reset the database. I tried Find My iPhone again but shows my Mac in Hawaii. I'm just concerned about this since it can't locate my Retina MacBook Pro in case it gets stolen!
I don't know if this is a bug in Mountain Lion or am I missing something?
Please help again... Really appreciate it.

  • Maps - picks up my old address as current location

Opened maps in Mavericks for the first time and it asked me if it could use my current loaction which I agreed to. It shows my current location as my previous address which I left about a month ago. I'm not sure where it is picking this up from. I checked contacts and my home address was reflecting the new one. I clicked on "show map" with the contacts application and it went to my new address. Any ideas? Thanks

    Try this:
    * Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to “OFF”
    * Locate yourself using the iPhone 3G’s GPS receiver in the maps app.
    * Navigate to Settings>General>Network>Enable 3G and toggle to “ON”

  • Can't turn off 'Current Location' icon in Maps app

Model: 4GB 1st Gen iPhone +(not experiencing any other issues except this)+
*Issue Began:* Shortly after update to 2.0.1
    Frequency: Always
    *Feature Concerned:*
In the Maps app, you can press the button on the lower left corner of the screen to make it show your current location. When you do, it asks the standard "Maps wants to use your current location" message to which you can allow or deny. If you allow, the button turns blue and a little blue circle with cross-hair pops up to show where you are. Pressing the button again will remove the location marker until you repeat the process.
    Problem:
Within the first few uses of the Maps app after the 2.0.1 update, I had used the feature described above, however it won't turn off. If I push the button to turn it off, the button will turn grey as if it is off, but the marker does not go away. Every time I open the map, it searches for and then shows my location without me turning it on and without asking first. This slows the performance of the map until it is done finding me which can take from 3-15 seconds.
    *I've Tried:*
    1. Turn feature on and off again= button goes from grey to blue but location always shown and no dialog.
    2. Returning to Home screen then back to Map= button still off and still finds location, no dialog.
    3. Force-Quitting then re-launch Maps= same result as above.
    4. Cycle Airplane mode= same result as above.
    5. Cycle Power= same result as above.
    6. Restore iPhone using backup= behavior returns to normal, but first time feature is used again the problem is re-established.
    7. All combinations of above= same.
    *Ideal Solution:*
Fix the problem without having to delete applications or restore to factory default (ie. loose all my application data). I guess I'm hoping someone else had and fixed this issue, 'cause I'm not leaving much room for troubleshooting am I... :-p

    *"I've Tried" Additions:*
    8. Turn off "Location Services" (Settings->General)= when LS is off, Maps does not automatically show my location, but if I push the button it gives me the dialog and the problem is re-established (doing so will also cause LS to turn back on).
    9a. Turn Location Services off
9b. Launch Maps to verify marker is now gone button is grey
9c. Turn Location Services back on
9abc= upon returning to Maps, the button is still off but it once again immediately searches for my location with no dialog.

  • Maps - current location question

I have loaded a voice recording app (iProRecorder) which has an option to tag a recording with the current location. This sort of works however it shows the current location as a suburb a few K's away from where I really am. If I go into maps and tap the map to get my current location it show the blue pin in the correct location with a small blue circle around it (ie not one which included this other suburb). Any ideas?

I suggest contacting the developer for this app - the programming to acquire the current location may not be waiting long enough to get the GPS location instead of cell tower location which isn't as accurate.

I have the same problem sometimes when inside my house, on some occasions it shows the wrong location (1/4 mile out), when it does this, this is because it cannot get a GPS signal and instead triangulates the cellular network for a location. On other occasions it does not get GPS signal.
Has soon as I go outside the Map works fine and shows my exact location.

  • User Interface Bug? "Current Location" Display in Audible Books

I have been an Audible audio book listener for many years on many different kinds of iPods. The iPhone is also great for this, but does introduce an interface change that I find undesirable.
When you tap on the book cover area of an audio book (in PORTRAIT) mode while an Audible book is playing, you get a nice display of where you are currently located in the audio book file.
However, on the iPhone, the display resulting from the foregoing method shows the current minute and second in the CHAPTER of the audiobook (i.e., a subdivision of the audio book file)--not the audio book file as a whole. This behavior is very different from that displayed on iPods. Thus, I need to remember that I am in Chapter 4 of Part 2 of "The Woman in White," for example, at 31:45. I also cannot tell by glancing at the readout how many minutes are left in the entire file; I can only tell how many minutes are left in the current chapter.
Does anyone else find this to be less user friendly than the standard iPod interface showing the current location in Audible books?

Yes, the "Pagination Display Position" lets you control where the pagination shows up. So you could put it top left, top right, bottom left, bottom right. IMHO there are pros and cons to each position.

  • Since upgrading to iOS 8.3 the maps apps on my ipad do not show current location from my gps

Since upgrading to iOS 8.3 the maps apps on my ipad do not show current location from my gps DUALXGPS150A
The data is still being received by the ipad but not appearing on any of the maps.
Everything was working fine before the upgrade.

    Hi davidisleta,
If you are having issues with your iPad not showing location information, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Unable to determine current location at this time Mavericks

    Hello,
I can't get location service running in Mavericks.
I know it worked before. But somehow it stopped working. It doesn't work with map neither.
    Thanks in advance.

Perhaps the 'network time server' for the region, that Apple uses, is down at this time(?)
Not sure how one would go about reporting an issue, to somewhere it would matter...
Try unchecking the box next to the automatic time zone location item & set it manually.
{Edit to add: I noticed you asked of this in an older thread, that had suggested this:
OS X Mavericks: Manage which apps can use Location Services
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH14318
    And I looked into that link, but it does not explain your issue.}
The same item has occurred several times, as indicated by a few similar named topics
that come up on a search via google of those same words; here's the link to that:
    https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl#q=mac+os+x+unable+to+determine+current+locati on+at+this+time
You may have to set the TimeZone manually and turn off the automatic location.
This has been an issue in some places (regional, etc) since OS X 10.6.8. but
I have no way of knowing if the cause may be the same or another behind it.
However such an outage (if it could be proven as such) would be difficult to work
around; short of testing the computer in a different Time Zone to see if that network
server was working. Then you could tell if the issue is in the Time Zone you wanted
to be using, and not in the computer itself. A matter of troubleshooting.
{Since these ASC discussion are generally and simply product users who volunteer &
try to answer some varying levels of questions, an inquiry here does not constitute a
contact with Apple, Inc, directly. So please keep that in mind should nobody know
    where to look (if possible) to discover an exact match to your issue.}
So, see if the clock and time zone work if you do not have the Automatic location set
and choose the location manually instead. I don't believe a reset of the System
Management Controller (SMC) or the NVRAM/PRAM may be of help; though these
do have some bearing on settings in the computer, for different purposes.
•Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
    •About NVRAM and PRAM
Hopefully you won't have to reset anything but the Date/Time panel in the Mac.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Current Location bookmark disappearing from Maps App

My Current Location bookmark in the Maps app keeps disappearing. I can restore the phone and it will be there. But as soon as I restore my backup it disappears. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I don't have an answer (sorry) but think I have a related problem. My bookmarks tab has TWO problems. First, it doesn't scroll (can't see bookmarks below those that show up at the top of the list). Second, there is no "done" button. Very strange. And a weird bug - when in "edit" mode (to delete or rearrange bookmarks), the scrolling works.
