Mapping media keys on G5 keyboard

Hi Mac Pro folks
I am not sure how many Mac users today still prefer using the old, big G5 keyboard, anyway I am one of them. The first thing to start using my brand new Mac Pro was to pair it with my G5 keyboard over Bluetooth.
However, the G5 keyboard does not have the media keys like those on today's Apple Keyboard with Numeric Keypad. The media keys are very convenient as they are always workable even you are not operating iTunes.
Is there a way to map these media keys to some of F keys on my G5 keyboard?
Thanks,
B

I tried to add F8 as Play for iTunes but it did not work.
Moreover, does Application based mean the key won't work once iTunes window is not the current active window?
What I am expecting is to get the media keys (always workable even iTunes not in the active window) mapped to a few Function keys. Any hints please?

  • Mapping media keys to xfce4-mixer

I tried to search and find someway to link my media keys on XPS M1330 to my xfce4-mixer. My keyboard is setup as evdev, running xev shows my keys are already set to XF86Audio(something). I even tried to map xmodmap and it didn't help. Anyone know if it is possible to map keys to control xfce4-mixer?

Maybe, I don't know. I have solved it using another software that comes with ALSA. (The result is the same, it will show up in xfce4-mixer too)
Menu -> Settings -> Keybord --> Application Shortcut Tab
    Button Add
      Command: amixer -c 0 sset Master 5+
Command shortcut: *Press your Vol+ key*

  • Aluminum Keyboard Media Keys Question

I just got a new Logitech M500 mouse to replace the $15 Dynex mouse I was using prior and I have had a slight problem with the button mapping.
What I want to do is set one of the buttons on the mouse to perform the same action as the play/pause button on my aluminum keyboard.
When I set the button to "F8" all it does is push the non fn modified F8. It does this regardless of whether or not I have the use "F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys" option selected.
What would probably work best would be to map another key on the keyboard to perform the Play/Pause action of "fn F8" but I have searched extensively and have not seen anyway to do this. Is it even possible?

Looks like this was already reported earlier in another thread (but with the white Apple Remote instead of keyboard).

  • Media Keys working/Volume keys broken

I used to use MultiPlugin by localhost to make the media keys on my keyboard work when iTunes was minimized. This worked great. When I updated iTunes to 7.1, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the media keys worked fully without any plugins. However, after using my computer for a few hours I found that the volume keys performed a "double press" when I was only pressing the buttons once. What happens is that when I try to mute/unmute the system the volume will be muted and immediately unmuted or vice versa. I have narrowed this problem down to iTunes, seeing as when I stop running iTunes, the keys work fine. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Justin

  • Satellite A350-20Q - Illumination media keys have gone dark

I bought a Satellite a350-20Q laptop about two weeks ago and the media keys above the keyboard have seemed to have gone darker than when i first had it.
I have checked using the HWSetup and it says they are definitely illuminated.
    Has anyone got any suggestions?

Thanks for the help but i think it is a different problem than the lighting being enabled or disabled, if i gently press down on the keys then they become brighter so I am guessing that either the lighting has physically fallen down or that the buttons themselves have physically moved upwards for some reason.
Thanks for the help but i think i will just go and get it fixed or replaced.

  • ITunes 10.5 and Microsoft keyboard media keys with IntelliType Installed

Hi. I just updated to iTunes 10.5 and the media keys (play/pause, back, and forward buttons -- the latter two of which have been mapped to previous and next track respectively) on my Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard no longer work when iTunes in minimized. It works fine if iTunes is the active window. I tried installing the latest version of IntelliType (v8.2) and the installation notified me that I already have the latest version. I had no problems with the older version of iTunes (10.4).
Is anyone else having this problem? Any solutions? Thanks in advance!

I managed a different FIX. This is just for Microsoft Multimedia keyboard (I have Microsoft 8000)
I uninstalled Microsoft Intellitype 8.1 that I had and then installed the newer 8.2 Version.
Before I did that I Downgraded to Itunes 10.3 64x like someone else said, but it did not help.
If this fix don't work with Itunes 10.5 then Downgrade like I did, It easier..No copying of files needed.
After you uninstall Itunes 10.5 and Install 10.3, it give you an error for your library.
So you press "SHIFT" and then open ITUNES.
then you go to "My Music\iTunes" folder inside your genereal music folder, it should be there. (WIN 7)
then to "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and you should have a backup or and some kind of old "itunes Library folder" files...you choose one of them and Itunes opens fine with all playlist and everything.
    Now everything workd find.
    Good luck!
    P.S
I after all this this does not work, might be because I installed Itune 10.3 before the new Intellitype 8.2.
So try Uninstalling Intellitype 8.2 again.
Then reinstall it...maybe it does things when Installing...I don't know.

  • Next / Previous media keys don't work on 3rd Party Keyboard, Play/Pause does work. [MAC]

    Hello!
So I am using a Logitech G710+ keyboard with my Mac (running 10.9) , and the media keys (Play/Pause, Stop, Next and Previous) work perfectly fine with iTunes, even in background.
Now, when I use Spotify, I usually quit iTunes (to stop conflicts), but only the Play/Pause key seems to work.
It does work in the background, which is good, but crucially the Next / Previous keys don't work at all.
    Any ideas?

So I have the exact same issue as everyone else here.  I have a Logitech K750 wireless keyboard running Yosemite on my MBP. I don't necissarily think this issue resides with Spotify, but instead with Logitech.  If I use the media keys on my MBP I am capable of using Next/Previous even when Spotify is in the background.  On the wireless keyboard only Play/Pause and the Volume buttons work.  I think the issue is with the key mapping with the Logitech. Then again, I don't know how the code is written.  Maybe Spotify missed an alternative key map for the media buttons.  I didn't write the code.... The logitech forum is a ghost town for this issue though.  Only post I found was 5 years old. EDIT: With further reasearch I DO believe the problem lies with Spotify.  A tech for Logitech explained to me that Spotify wrote some "interesting" code for the keymap functionality for its Mac client.  A quick Google search shows that it is not only Logitechs experiencing this issue.  It would be great if we could get someone to look into this.  It isn't critical, but it sure would be nice to get fixed.

  • Media Keys Not Working - Apple Wireless Keyboard - Snow Leopard 10.6

Hello, I am a new user to this Support Area and i tried calling but as its Christmas Day i cant get through because there closed so i decided to join here.
Ok basically my problem is that i have a iMac and i recently installed Snow Leopard and on Christmas Day i got a Wireless Apple Keyboard i set it up all went well and got through all the bluetooth process fine except when i went to try use the Media Keys which are Brightness Up/Down, Volume Control, Play/Pause/FastForward and the other two don't know what there called tho when i press any of them they dont work when i press F12 which has a picture of Volume Up it goes to my Widgets thing and when i press F11 which is Volume Down it moves all the current apps out of the desktop like a clearing space function.
I Really would like to have the Media Keys back to how there supposed to be i don't know why it is doing this but i think its Snow Leopard.I Have tried everything possible in System Prefs even removed the keyboard from the Bluetooth paired devices and re paired it but still nothing. It would be mostly appreciated if one you guys could help me soon..
    Thanks Sean

Wow! I am in the exact same situation. I don't think it is Snow Leopard tho b/c when I plug my old keyboard back in the media keys work fine. It might have to do with the apple aluminum keyboard 2.0 update but when I try to download that it says my system is unable to support it (eben tho it only requires at least 10.5.8).
If you find a solution let me know.

  • 8815 Keyboard: How to Disable media keys

    Hello,
I was hoping to get some help. I am trying to identify a way in which I can disable the media buttons (mute, play, volume, etc) on my 8815 usb keyboard. I installed the lenovo drivers, which allows one to disable/customize the quick keys (email, word processeer, etc), but not for the media keys. Any thoughts on this topic would be greatly appreciated.

  • Windows 7, Microsoft Keyboard Media Keys (Play/Pause), and iTunes

I'm using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and iTunes 9.0.1.8 with Microsoft Intellipoint 7.0 and a Microsoft Keyboard with media keys.
In previous versions of Windows, iTunes, and Intellipoint, pressing the "play/pause" key on the keyboard would play or pause iTunes -- even when iTunes wasn't the active application.
In my current setup, when iTunes is minimized, then the media keys don't control iTunes.
Is this a bug? Is there something I can do to fix the situation?
I've asked Microsoft for help, and they say it looks to be a compatibility issue with iTunes. So, now I'm asking Apple. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I have this same problem, but with Windows XP Pro. It MUST be a iTunes and a Microsoft IntelliType driver issue.
I JUST reinstalled my computer and loaded all new everything and the buttons worked off and on (depending on focus). I don't remember doing anything to make it work last time. The only thing I remember was installing a plug-in so my ATI Remote Wonder worked with iTunes.
I downloaded Chris's dll as suggested. Worked flawlessly. I hope Apple and/or Microsoft fix this in the next release of their software.

Since everything you have is under warranty, call Applecare for a warranty replacement of the KB.  Apple pays shipping both ways.

  • Gaming Keyboards - Media Keys

Are there any gaming keyboards out there that have media keys that work with iTunes in Windows?

Same Problem here. After an autoupdate of iTunes a while ago my Media Keys on my Mac Book Pro as well as on a Windows 8.1 machine with a Cherry keyboard, stoped working.

  • Media Keys Recognized Correctly Using Xev but pressing has no effect.

On g15 keyboard Xev maps the multimedia keys correctly

        XmbLookupString gives 0 bytes:
        XFilterEvent returns: False
but Clementine doesn't react when the key is pressed.
I don't know what changes but rebooting can fixes / creates the problem randomly.

    I have  g15daemon , g15composer, g15macro, g15stats, libg15, lib15render installed.
The media keys are detected when setting them in the global shortcut for clementine, but pressing them has no effects (works on some reboots as i mentioned).
Hmmm....G15 media keys works out-of-the-box for Amarok.  I can experiment on my box once I'm through with work in a few hours.
Looking at the Clementine bugtracker-there's an open bug regarding multimedia keys on Win7 and Clementine already.  I'll play later-but I'm thinking this is something to post on their bug tracker.

  • Keys-u-see keyboard

My partner has low vision and was given a Keys-U-See multimedia keyboard. Of course, as with most Adaptive Technology solutions, it is designed for PCs only. She can use the normal keys fine on our macmini with 10.6.8 (after I exchanged the command and option keys). However, I cannot figure out how to program the multimedia keys to work.
    The mutimedia keys (buttons) are

Assuming I can get instructions on how to map the keys refernenced above, I would like to map 3 of the keys (Search, Previous, Next) to do different things depending on the app I am using when the key is pressed.
But at this point, I'd just like some help with mapping the keys in general. Anyone have any ideas?

You want a utility such as QuickKeys, Spark, other that can map function keys, command keys, option keys, control keys, etc... to function.  Generally speaking they can provide either global assignements, or tie the key function to a specific app.
