Mapping shared resources on a network on  an ipod Touch

Hello All
Does any one know of any app that makes it possible to map to a shared network resource on the same WiFi/LAN?
This would be a VERY useful thing and seems in theory to be a simple matter but maybe there are reasons Apple doesn't allow this.
Any thoughts?

    Try:
    - Powering off and then back on your router.
    - Anything else here
iTunes for Windows: iTunes cannot contact the iPhone, iPad, or iPod software update server
    - Change the DNS to either Google's or Open DNS servers
    Public DNS — Google Developers
    OpenDNS IP Addresses
    - Try on another computer/network
    - Wait if it is an Apple problem

Does the iPod connect to other neworks?
Do other devices connect to the network?
    What encryption are you using?
How you tried changing the type of encruption? Changing to no encryption?

  • WiFi Networks and an iPod Touch.

I have seen many comments about WiFi networks and the seemingly impossibility of the iPod to connect to some.
However, I have not come across a solution to my issue - there may have been one but I confess I've not been successful at finding it!
I have set up a home network. At first I used an Airport Extreme but then it died so I set things up with a NetGear DG834GT. The home network uses a WPA2 password.
At home no problem - my MacBook Pro (Core2Duo), my son's iMac i7, my 2nd Gen iPod Touch (4.2.1) and my iPad 2 all connect great to the WiFi network.  I can surf the web etc etc. I'm a happy bunny.
When I'm out and about I often use my iPod Touch to get access to the web and my e-mails etc using WiFi.  Most networks are secured meaning you have to type in a password.  Hotels are like this and usually there is no problem once the front desk gives me the password.  The unsecured ones are often WiFi Zone Hotspots where you have to pay to continue.  I don't usually bother with these.
Some sites though offer unsecured, free access and free internet use - coffee shops in particular.  A coffee shop near me has such a network and I have absolutely no problem connecting.  However, I have come across a few networks which show up in the "Available Networks" list complete with name etc.  And yet when you select this network and try to join I get the message "Unable to join such and such Network.  Obvioulsy with no network connection there is no internet etc.
Usually I simply ignore this problem and wait until the next WiFi network is available (when I get home?).  Not quite so reliable if home is 3000 miles away!
But does anyone know why there are some networks that I cannot join?  Is there a solution for this that I can carry out?  I've tried the usual things like resetting the iPod, forgetting the network etc.  Obviously I do not have access to the router as this is owned and operated by the company/enterprise concerned.
Not a show stopper by any means but an irritation nevertheless.  Incidentally, there were also a few networks recently on my travels where both the Touch and the iPad behaved the same.  i.e. I couldn't join some networks with either device.
    Thoughts?

Interesting hypothesis B-rock.  I could try contacting the network administrator but my guess is that I'll be met with a blank look when I ask for that! Still can't be bad to try!
Another piece of "anecdotal" evidence for you.  At the local garden centre (which is part of a chain) I used to be able to connect - no problem.  Then suddenly all connections failed - at all locations.  I am leaning towards believing that they have changed routers to more "modern" ones and for some reason these new routers won't allow connection to an iPod/iPad etc.  As yet I cannot confirm this or otherwise and unless someone comes up with a bright idea I'm left with the feeling that unless the network administrator recognises that he/she needs to create a network that works with iPads/iPhones etc we're doomed.  I noticed that the next table over using a PC had no problems!  Grrrr.

  • Home sharing works okay for iPad 2 and iPod Touch 4, but Touch 5 only shares music??

So, just like I said.  What is going on?
iTunes library is on a Windows 7 PC.  all my devices are logged into the same Apple ID for homesharing.  Windows 7 laptop can share everything, iPad 2 can share everything, iPod Touch 4 can share everything... but iPod Touch 5 only shares music.  The video app only shows the videos that are synced onto the iPod.  doesn't have the 'more' tab to select the shared library like it's supposed to.
I just hooked up a new linksys router. I don't know if the issue was going on before and I never noticed, or if it's new with the router. But the fact that it works with all but this one device makes me think it isn't the router setup.

Nvm. Disabled my firewall to my avail. Thanks for everyone.

  • Can i prioritize wi-fi networks on my ipod touch 5g?

when i go to a location i frequent, my ipod first connects to a wi-fi network i don't want to use.  then i have to switch it to the more secure one.

When you are within range of the network you want to forget, go to Settings>wifi>the network and tap the circled ! and near the top of the pate will be a Forget this Network button

  • Unable to connect to home wireless network with my iPod touch

I've had my iTouch for several months now and I'm still not able to connect to my wireless network at home. I've tried the resets and other suggestions I've found in the discussion groups but nothing has worked.
I have an older Netgear Router MR814v2 and it is unsecured. It is attached to my old desktop, HP Pavilion running Windows ME, which is not able to run the itunes software. My HP laptop is where my iTouch and iTunes software is installed.
The iTouch displays my network with good signal strength, but when I try to connect I get the "unable to join the network "NETGEAR".
Going to my router, it does not recognize my iTouch as an attached device. Why is that and what am I missing?
Thank you for all suggestions and your help.

I tried powering down the router. When it's off the iTouch does not recognize the network and then when it's powered on again, the iTouch recognizes the network. Unlike the public wi-fi spots that my iTouch responds to, where all the info like IP Address, Subnet Mask, Router, DNS etc are populated in the settings...my iTouch does not populate these fields at home even though it recognizes the network. I still get the unable to connect to network error. Could it be that my router is antiquated and can not support the iTouch? Like I said earlier, my Router does not recognize the iTouch as being attached to it.

  • Home Sharing when Family has 3 computers, 3 ipod touches, 3 apple id's

Would like to Home Share, do we now need to go to just one Apple Id and never use our original ID's again? and if we do what will happen to everything purchased under our original ID's?

Well, if you want to home share, go to Advanced > Turn On Home Sharing. Then put in an Apple ID, and you will be ready to home share. Do this with all three of your computers using THE SAME Apple ID. You can turn off home sharing then! While you're using Home Sharing, your original Apple ID won't change (the one you use to buy music). You can use Home Sharing with another Apple ID without having to change your current Apple ID. Tell me if this works!

  • 2 people sharing same apple ID on 2 different iPod touches?

My brother is being selfish and wants the dongs on my iPod touch and he just got a new iPod touch and he won't use acdifferent apple id than me cuz he wants my songs. Is there any other way for him to get my songs but use a different apple ID and me still have the songs?

Well he could just sync the songs via iTunes and signed in using a different Apple ID on his device! But just make sure that yu transfer the songs from your iPod to the iTunes library!

  • Internet Sharing With an iPod Touch??

I've done a search and couldn't find anything. This might be better suited in a different forum but I'll try it here.
I've got two laptops. The first is a MacBook (Intel) and the other is a PowerBook (PPC).
I've been using the MacBook for all my work with my Touch. I do not have wireless at work so I use my MacBook and just share my internet via airport to get my Touch online. It's been working without any problems. For some reason my MacBook crashed earlier today (screen froze except with a message box that said I need to restart my Mac). No problem I shut it down and did some BS for work. I got back on it today and haven't had any problems but now my Touch will not get online via the MacBook. It sees and connects to the MacBook wireless but it doesn't have any connectivity. It gets an IP address assigned, but I can't get anything on it.
Thinking it was my computer I tried my PowerBook and was able to get online with the PowerBook via the shared wireless network on the Macbook. Also, I can plug the LAN cable into the PowerBook and the Touch will connect through it using the internet sharing.
I was thinking that it was a difference between the PPC and the Intel chips but the Touch was working on the MacBook a few hours earlier. I am running the same basic system on both computers and for the most part they are running the same stuff.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

After a long time i think someone has found a way to get internet sharing working with the ipod touch.
found this post by "coolisstillgood" in macforums and it worked perfectly for me.
+"I've seen a lot of posts and notes about this topic over the internet and non of them could solved my problem completely, they were partially helpful but not entirely helpful. there were tons of complains about this matter and a lot of users seemed unhappy because simply they couldn't share their Internet Connection over airport or wifi with their iPod Touch. After a long and tiring night I finally figured out how to get it right and I decided to share this experience with all the Mac users gladly.+
+Ok, what I have is a MacBook with OS 10.5.2 installed and my Internet connection is through cable modem and it's a Ethernet Connection and I shared my Internet through Airport with my iPod Touch.+
+I assumed your Internet Connection is fully established and you can surf the web with your MacBook.+
+you go to System Preferences and under the Internet & Network, you go to Sharing,Turn On Web Sharing and Internet Sharing,in the Internet Sharing you have to choose to Share your Connection From Ethernet(in case you get your Internet Connection from Ethernet of course) To computer using Airport .+
+And then on your iPod touch you go to Setting and the Wi-Fi,you should see your computer name there, choose the network and then press the ">" sign in the blue circle, you should see your IP Address which probably is 10.0.2.2 . What is important here is your DNS which probably should be something like this format 10.0.2.1+
+you go back to your Mac and System Preferences>Network>Airport you should see your Computer's Name in the Network Name field, you go to Advanced>TCP/IP and write down your IPv4 Address, go one step back which is System Preferences>Network and this time you go to Ethernet>Advanced>DNS on the right side, there is the list of your DNS Servers, you add your DNS number form your iPod Touch and your IPv4 from your Airport configuration and that's it.+
+you should be able to browse internet from your iTouch by now.+
+And for all the IP stuff, you let DHCP handle it Automatically. I did it and it works fine for me and the speed is pretty good too and there is no need for a wireless router. You can share your Ethernet Internet Connection Easily from Airport to your iTouch.+
+I hope this post will be useful for ones struggling with this problem.+
    +keep it cool"+
follow the instructions exactly and good luck!

  • I have a apple tv with no remote but i have a ipod touch ..how can i turn on remote sharing on my apple tv with no remote?

i have a apple tv ipluged it into my big screen i turned on home sharing on my itunes and on my ipod touch but i dont have a remote to my apple tv so i can turn on remote sharing so it will reconize my ipod touch ...??? can anyone help?

I think if there is a way to program a different remote first like a direct tv remote, then you could turn on home sharing and then use either that universal remote or the IOS device. I cannot figure out how to program my direct tv remote for my apple tv though.

  • IPod Touch will not connect to WiFi network

    Hi,
I am getting errors connecting to WiFi networks with my iPod Touch. This had affected a Touch I got a couple months ago. Initially, the WiFi worked perfectly on my WEP network and several others. Then, one day, I couldn't get any WiFi. After standard troubleshooting steps (forget network & re-enter, reset network settings, restart, restore iPod, etc.), it still wouldn't work. I returned the iPod and bought another. At first it also worked perfectly on any WiFi network I joined.
But now I'm affected by the same issue. This time, I went to the router settings and saw that the router (a Linksys) had assigned the iPod Touch an IP address. Yet, in the settings pane on th iPod Touch, the iPod had no IP address. I just ahead and reset all network settings, forget the network, reset the update and still nothing. And this was recently after updating to 1.1.2 firmware.
Given that this has now happened to iPod Touches, I'm concerned that it may be an issue that is affecting others. Any suggestions? The error I get in Safari is "Safari can't open the page because it can't find the server."

same problem!it connects to the linksys(not always, but miracles happen),and it can't load any page. it's really anoyingi. actually remember that the first day i bought it could've connect to linksys, but then my dad just helped me to acces our network and i didn'try to use it. but when i was in neighbourhood and wanted to open safari, it found me a link sys,but couldn't load anything. like nothing, even thou the signal was pretty strong...and i tried to do something like this in different places and buildings, the only place where i could actually connect is home with my network, that's it!
i don't want to return my ipod, but it really drives me to it..=/
is there anything that i can do?
    tnks.

  • NEW IPOD Touch 4th Generation - Cannot connect  Wi-Fi to Secured Network

    Hi,
I'm having issues with connecting my IPOD Touch to my Linksys Secured WPA2 network.
My IPOD touch is 4th Generation.
    OS = 4.2.1
It sees my Network and asks me to type in the password. The password is very long and after I type it in it states "Unable to join the network"
Can anyone help? Is there an App I can download to help?

You do not need to input the MAC address into your router unless you have the router set to MAC address filtering (which I suggest you leave off).
Second, an overly long password just creates a host of problems and provides little, if any, extra protection. WPA2 has never been cracked and anything over 8-12 characters is going to take more computer horsepower than is available in the world today. So, shorten the password and log your touch onto your network.

  • Connecting to shared iTunes via iPod Touch wifi connection

I was wondering if there was a way for me to connect to my shared iTunes music from my iPod Touch (IE in another room, NOT connected to a computer). I would assume that since my iTunes is shared over my wifi connection, and my iPod Touch connects over the same wifi, it would let me do this, but I can't find anything to support this evidence. I'm probably wrong.
If anyone has an answer, let me know! Thanks.

This assumes that you use the Ethernet port to connect the iMac to the Internet:
Navigate to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > Internet section. Switch on Internet Sharing and choose "Sharing your connection from": "Built-in Ethernet". To computers using "Airport".
To secure the connection (highly recommended) go to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > Internet section. Click on "Airport Options..." and check "Enable encryption (using WEP)". Then enter a password twice. You will need to enter this password to share your connection, although you should be aware even 128bit WEP isn't all that secure.
Additionally OS X IP firewall is probably blocking incoming Port 80 requests (i.e. web traffic).
Go to  menu > System Preferences... > Sharing > and under Services check "Web Sharing".
The wording in this post is for Leopard (10.5).
    cheers
