Maps app:  find me locator inconsistent

I have an iphone 3gs -- fairly new -- Just recently, the GPS on the maps app has been working inconsistently. Some times it shows my current location is in the middle of the US (I'm in LA) and yet other times it is accurate. It's not a big deal, but it's annoying. Any ideas as to why this is occuring? I have reset and restored.

Taking a wild guess, you're near Colorado ?

  • HT1688 the Apple Maps app won't locate an address, the address is a medical center in gainesville, fl 4037 NW 86th Terrace 32606. i had to google map it in order to find the location... please update addresses on your Maps app... how often are the Maps up

How often does Apple Maps update address locations?? there is an address in Gainesville, Fl it is a health facility as it was priority to locate, the address is 4037 NW 86th Terr, 32606. I had to use my google maps app... it then took me to the correct address and located it no problem. please update at least this address so people in need of health care don't go through the same thing I had to endure...

The satellite imagery on Apple Maps shows that whole area as undeveloped woods.   Google shows a brand new building with the nearby streets.
Use the "Report a Problem" button on the Maps to inform Apple of the required update.

  • Where does the Ipod Maps App get its location from?

Mine thinks it is in Queensland but it is in Victoria

Location on the iPOd is determined by the location of a nearby wifi router that is in Apple's database of routers and their location.  The iPod does not have to be connected to the router, just within rage.  As of yet, nobody seems to know how to add to or correct Apple's database.

  • Maps no longer finds my location

I cant seem to get maps to find my location anymore. it used to work, but ny in recent days.

Nope, it doesn't help, because unfortunately, it's wrong. the Touch will have a stab at detecting location via WiFi. It uses technology from Skyhook wireless that attempts to triangulate your position using the signals from known WiFi networks. It finds my home (in East London) with surprising accuracy.
Now, I can imagine that there are lots of reasons why this system may stop working, there could be local RF interference, *or one of the local reference networks might be down, or there could be a problem at Skyhook HQ*. My best guess is that if the original poster tries from another location, it could well be that the system will be working again.
That's probably what it was, their system was down (since I tried in two different locations). It's working again

  • How often are the maps in the Maps app updated?

The Maps app couldn't locate a 2 well known stores right off of the highway that have existed for well over a year, possibly 2.  The location is seen in the iOS 5 Maps, but there's nothing but an empty location in the iOS 6 app.  How frequently are locations updated?!

The satellite imagery on Apple Maps shows that whole area as undeveloped woods.   Google shows a brand new building with the nearby streets.
Use the "Report a Problem" button on the Maps to inform Apple of the required update.

  • Maps App w/ Find Location Error

    Hey Again Everybody!
I was bored and was messing around with maps to see if it could find this lake(i already knew how to get there) and when i clicked the find location button to find my location it says
    "Unable to find location"
I heard that it "triangulates" your possition (i dont care about spelling ATM.)so does that mean i need to have three registered networks or like three or more networks near me?
It wold be a lot easier.
    Please Help! :S
    -Nick
P.S: Do i need to go into contacts, register myself, and add something that tells it that i am that person so it know what country i am in. I think i confused it being not in the USA. LOL!!!!!!

Were you connected to a WiFi network when you tried this? First, for Maps to localize you, you must have a functioning WiFi connection. If there are other access points within range, that helps localize better (smaller diameter circle around your location). The "triangulation" applies more to the iPhone, which in addition to WiFi points uses cell towers (not possible on the IPT). The WiFi locator relies on the Skyhook database; you can request WiFi points be added to the database here:

    Hope this helps...

  • Can't turn off 'Current Location' icon in Maps app

Model: 4GB 1st Gen iPhone +(not experiencing any other issues except this)+
*Issue Began:* Shortly after update to 2.0.1
    Frequency: Always
    *Feature Concerned:*
In the Maps app, you can press the button on the lower left corner of the screen to make it show your current location. When you do, it asks the standard "Maps wants to use your current location" message to which you can allow or deny. If you allow, the button turns blue and a little blue circle with cross-hair pops up to show where you are. Pressing the button again will remove the location marker until you repeat the process.
    Problem:
Within the first few uses of the Maps app after the 2.0.1 update, I had used the feature described above, however it won't turn off. If I push the button to turn it off, the button will turn grey as if it is off, but the marker does not go away. Every time I open the map, it searches for and then shows my location without me turning it on and without asking first. This slows the performance of the map until it is done finding me which can take from 3-15 seconds.
    *I've Tried:*
    1. Turn feature on and off again= button goes from grey to blue but location always shown and no dialog.
    2. Returning to Home screen then back to Map= button still off and still finds location, no dialog.
    3. Force-Quitting then re-launch Maps= same result as above.
    4. Cycle Airplane mode= same result as above.
    5. Cycle Power= same result as above.
    6. Restore iPhone using backup= behavior returns to normal, but first time feature is used again the problem is re-established.
    7. All combinations of above= same.
    *Ideal Solution:*
Fix the problem without having to delete applications or restore to factory default (ie. loose all my application data). I guess I'm hoping someone else had and fixed this issue, 'cause I'm not leaving much room for troubleshooting am I... :-p

    *"I've Tried" Additions:*
    8. Turn off "Location Services" (Settings->General)= when LS is off, Maps does not automatically show my location, but if I push the button it gives me the dialog and the problem is re-established (doing so will also cause LS to turn back on).
    9a. Turn Location Services off
9b. Launch Maps to verify marker is now gone button is grey
9c. Turn Location Services back on
9abc= upon returning to Maps, the button is still off but it once again immediately searches for my location with no dialog.

  • Will the icloud keep a record that the phone has been tracked or a record of the locations tracked by the app "find my iPhone"

Will the icloud keep a record that the phone has been tracked or a record of the locations tracked by the app "find my iPhone"

Not unless you placed a lost device in Lost Mode and it is detected as being online.  If so, it will show its current and previous locations on a map as shown at the bottom of this article: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0f0165.

  • 1Changing my location on Maps app

    Hello fellow iPeople,
I have a 1st gen. iPod touch, downloaded the new s-ware update to 2.1, got some apps from the store and now have a question/problem. Under the Maps app, google maps shows my location to be somewhere in North East Illinois, however I live in central Florida. I would like to be able to change my default location so my iPod knows where I live. I have my address saved in contacts, and it is also mapped, but whenever i touch the crosshairs to go back to my location, i go right back to Illinois. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Touching the cross hairs makes the iPod use WiFi to find your location.
If the WiFi network you are connected to is incorrectly registered with SkyHook (i.e. the wrong location has been entered with skyhook for the WiFi router) then you will always be located there in maps.

Then no information exists.  Use the Report a Problem button within the app to report it.

  • How can I find the location of an app on my iPad 2?

How can I find the location of an app on my iPad 2? The app comes up with a search, but that seems to be the only way to find it. I just installed the app today, but I can't figure out where it is. It has a pretty distinctive icon, and I've looked through all of my apps and even in folders (even though I don't know how it would have gotten there). I want to put it in an appropriate folder under the right subject, but I can't find it to do this. I can use the app, since I can find it through a search though. I have a lot of apps, but I looked very carefully and can't find it. Is there a way to ask my iPad to locate it for me? It's a $25 app and one I plan to use regularly, so I want it located in the folder of my choice. This problem makes we wonder if I have other "missing" apps, apps that I could  find if I happened to think to search for them, but that don't appear to be on my iPad (even though they actually  are).

You were right about the homescreens. I had turned my iPad off for the night with less than three full homescreens of loose apps, those not in folders. When I turned the iPad on this morning to try your suggestions, I had five full pages of loose apps. They just appeared when I restarted, and there was the app I was looking for, easy to find. Last night I was deleting apps I decided I wouldn't use, organizing useful apps into folders, and making sure I had as few pages as needed by making sure the gaps made by the moved/deleted apps were closed. The missing apps didn't show up at that point; I was just left with fewer than 11 pages. The apps only showed up when I restarted this morning. There were almost three extra pages of apps that weren't there last night. I know there must be other things missing, since all of the pages are full. So I tried your suggestion in iTunes. I connected my iPad, found an app in the alphabetical list on the left, and double clicked it. This brought me to the app's homescreen (and its home folder when applicable), the place where it was located. In order to identify which page that was, I had to scroll through the screen shots of the homescreens that was below the homescreen that was showing until I found the homescreen whose number was in white. Then I could count the pages on my iPad until I got to that page. I'll have to delete more apps and organize more into folders to see what else might show up. There are just too many apps available for special education, and I'm in the process of figuring out which are the best for my needs. Thanks so much!

  • How can I update a location in the Apple Maps app?

The location across the road from my office building shows that a high school is there, but that is not the case.  The high school has not been located across the road in over 20 years.  I found this error when I was updating the location information in Google Places and thought to check the location accuracy in the Apple Maps app.  How can I submit for a correction to the location info?

Apple has always included a way to "report a problem" in iOS 6 Maps, but because it does so in the context of Yelp local search information, it's not readily obvious that this button is for reporting map errors rather than just filing a grievance against a business or Yelp's data (below).
    Might try here...

I understand it'll be easier in OSX 10.9

  • Im trying to find out were I can go and submit a email to add to all the other people who cannot stand this new maps app. I want the google app back now or they need to make it the exact same. I hate that you have to close it out and redo the whole direct

Hello. Ive never even wanted to use my time to do this. But this maps app is absolutly discusting. There are a couple cool things but for the most part its horrible. I drive for a living. So I use maps app all the time. This has affected how I do my job. Ill either get a android phone soon if apple doesnt fix this problem. I dont like that you have to redo your directions each time you shut your phone off instead of starting off were your current position is. I dont like that you cant swipe to the next turn you have to make so you can see ahead. I have no use for the 3D option. Thats cool for some and I understand that. But please take it back it to the way the old maps worked but keep the voice navigation. I do like the maps sceem. But people if this is not were I need to post this please let me know. email [email protected] email me people please if you can help me or tell me were to find were I can email apple so they can see this complaint. I dont want to sound like a complainer cause im not. I just dont like this new maps app. I love apple products. IOS is awesome.

They are actively working to improve the Apple Maps app.
It is extremely unlikely that you will get the Google Maps app back, as the built in app.  Google may release an app one day in the app store.
You can alos look for other Map apps in the app store.

    - The iPod uses the location of a nerby or connected router to determine it location based on a database of routers and their location. It appears that the routers near y are not in Appl'es database.  As of yet, nobody here seems to know how to get routers added to the database.

  • How do I establish or change my "Home" location in the Mavericks Maps app?

In the Maps app in Mavericks my "Home" location is completely wrong, and there doesn't seem to be a way to change it.
The address itself, as it's expressed in text, is correct. But the location on the map in terms of where the address is located is entirely wrong.
How do I alter the location of "Home" in the Maps app to establish the correct location.
I have sumitted an error report to Apple to identify the problem. But this seems to be a futile effort, since I did the same thing when the Maps app was released for iPhone over a year ago and there's been no adjustment made.
So I'm looking for a way to manually correct my "Home" location on the map. Anyone know how to do this?

I have the same or similar wierd problem. For some reason, maps (and calendar when calculating travel time) believe I live some 80 km south of what I do. In another town, a street that doesn't have a similar name to mine. The address in contacts is correct. When I search for that address in maps it shows the correct address. If I type "home" in maps' search field it shows 2 homes, the wrong one and the good one (with the adress wrote). I have no idea how the wrong home got in there and how to get rid of it...
Calendar always uses of course the wrong home to calculate travel times...
