Maps App Question

I am considering the $20 upgrade, even though it's painful to accept. I have one question about the maps application. Can I get driving directions when connected to Wi-fi, save it, and have it available on a road trip when I won't be connected to wi-fi?

While at home and on wifi you can get directions and then set the view of maps to list so it shows you all the directions step by step.
Then leave maps how it is. If you want to play music or something in the mean time then press the home key to leave maps how it is and then just return to it when you get in the car and need the directions and they will still be there waiting for you.

  • Using iPhone Maps App abroad

I should start by saying that I have no problems with Maps on my iPhone 3G.
In fact I seem to have a magic iPhone judging by the posts and questions elsewhere.
My iPhone, with data roaming turned off - wifi off - 3G off, and with only a very basic 2G network with O2 in rural Wales and with only 1 to 2 bars of signal, quickly uploads the Google maps to the highest resolution (less than 1 minute). And no, the maps were not already cached on my iPhone unless someone stole it, went the remote location, used the maps app, then sneakily returned the phone. Neither do I suffer from memory lapses, nor Alzheimer's (though my children might disagree).
    My questions are;
    1) does this (marvellous) service actually operate over a bog standard mobile network connection?
    2) will it work as well anywhere in the world with a bog standard mobile network connection?
    3) will it cost me 'roaming' minutes to use the Maps app abroad.
    Many thanks,

Thanks for the info. I take it then that you don't need Wifi, Edge, or 3G for Maps to work which is good news, and contrary to many of the posts I have read.
Bog standard means 'basic' thought to be a corruption of 'box standard' as in 'vanilla', 'no frills' etc. Usually used in a slightly derogatory manner, as in "my kids have ended up in a 'bog standard' school".
    Thanks again.

  • I bought an iPhone 5s in China and the maps app is different.  When I go to the US will I be able to use Apple's native app or will I be stuck with this one?

So I wanted to ask a question that my googlefoo couldn't help me solve.
I bought an iphone at a reputable electronics market here in China and it is an AT&T model phone.  I bought it at one of the grey market locations because they were sold out elsewhere.  I contacted a friend at AT&T to make sure it is a legit AT&T model.  The phone is great and everything works perfectly including maps.  But maps are done by Autonavi here in China, not Apple.  I downloaded the Mavericks update on my mac and tried some of the new maps features and they wouldn't work with my phone.  That's okay since I live in China now but I'll be going back to the USA soon and I wonder what will happen.  Will it update the app to Apple's native one or stay with Autonavi.  Autonatvi does not have the flyover features and it is not robust in the USA.
Who can help me out here?  Has anyone purchased a 5, 5c, or 5s in China and gone elsewhere?  Did the maps app change?
    Thank you
tl;dr my china iphone has autonavi for maps not apple, when I go to the usa will I get the native app?

I live in China as well and my iPhone5s is the model A1530 I bougth outside China. I have the same problem as Nikatnight with the iPhone while the iPad Air (wifi only) is working like a charm. It must be definitely something related to the carrier since I was abroad few days ago and everything worked well.
If you pay attention at the source of your maps, you'll discover they are provided by AutoNavi instead of TomTom and make them appear in chinese with their own border interpretation. Queries are only acceppted in Chinese (p.e. if I type in english "Los Angeles International Airport"  it replies it cannot locate it)
I suppose everything will be fine when you'll be out of censorship....
Perhaps iOS  Apple Maps are absolutely useless for expatriate in China.
    Use Google Maps instead
BTW, I'm surprised how much Apple might prostrate towards hard power Governments.... No matter what, money are always on top!

  • Is there a way for the Yosemite maps app to add address to an existing contact (in contacts app) instead of creating new contact record with blank name (not useful)?

I was using the maps app in yosemite to look up an address, once I was able to verify the address, I wanted to add that address to an existing contact record in the contacts app.  When I clicked on the option to add address to contacts, it unfortunately creates a new record with the address in it, however, the rest of the contact is blank.
My question is: is there a way to prompt the user (me), to select whether they want to create a new contact or add it to an existing contact?
Thanks in advance for your help!

  • Although I have been using Google Maps App in India for a while now (without any issues) but I still want to know if there are any plans for launching Turn by Turn Navigation under the OOTB Map App for iOS?

Although I have been using Google Maps App in India for a while now (without any issues) but I still want to know if there are any plans for launching Turn by Turn Navigation under the OOTB Map App for iOS?
It has been quite a while since Apple came up with Map App of their own and should be releasing improved maps with more capabilities in India.
    Cheers!

No one here can answer your question, as there is no one from Apple here, & no one here represents Apple or speaks for Apple.

  • NavigationBar in "Maps" app

    hello.
I'm a newbie for developping iPhone app.
    Following is my question:
When I push "direction" button which is located at the bottom of "Maps" app, a navigation bar is shown (this bar has 2 textFields).
How can I custom navigationBar like this ?
    please help me.
    thanks

I don't think the bar with two text fields is a navigation bar, it's just a UIView customized with two text fields and button on the left. But, when you click the directions button the navigation bar is slided down with two buttons (Clear and Cancel).I don't know if the following suggestion is the right way but in my application I just change the frame of the navigation bar outside the bounds of the screen and when someone click on the search bar, I animate the nav bar frame to slide down by using UIAnimations block and changing the frame attributes.
    Hope, you got the idea.

  • Maps app missing

Somehow, my Maps app is missing on my home screen. It only appears when I double tap the home button, and then it appears at bottom of screen with all the recently opened apps. Any way I can get it back on the home screen where it was when I bought the phone? I have the iPhone 4.

Thank you. I very carefully checked all screens and it def was gone. Only appeared when I double tapped home button to shoe recently opened apps. But I guess it doesn't matter to question it. Your instruction solved the issue. Thanks again!

  • Maps App: Multiple Destinations

    Two questions:
    A) Is there a way for me to input multiple destinations into the Maps application.
    B) If so, is there a way that Maps can order the stops in the Route from closest to furthest so that I can make the most of my time? (i.e. if I put 3 different destinations, I don't want it to take me to the further one first just because I have it listed first).
If this is not possible in the Maps app, is there a website I can use to do this?

    No, there is not.

The Maps App does not have routing capabilities like a dedicated car navigation GPS would have.

  • Just purchased new iPad.  Map app shows my current location in another city.  Can't figure out how to change to correct address.

QUESTION - just purchased iPad 2.  Map app shows my 'current location' in another city.  I can't figure out how to correct the address.

That is a problem with the WiFi-only iPads.  Location is determined by the routers "within reach" of your iPad.  There apparently is a database somewhere that tracks the location of routers and that is used to determine the location of the iPad.  It's been known to produce some really cockamamie results.
In my case, it was off by a reliable 200 yards for maybe the first year that I owned the iPad.  Then it mysteriously began to recognize my actual location.

  • Maps App and car's bluetooth

Can the driving directions from the Maps App on iPhone 5s be sent thru the car's bluetooth speaker?

    Hey P. Comeau,
Great question! Yes, you can definitely do so. I use my car’s bluetooth system all the time with Apple Maps for navigation. However, this is going to depend on the functionality of your car’s bluetooth setup, as some configurations may not support this feature. For more information, check out the following resources:

  • Maps: Google Earth, google maps, google maps app...what's the difference?

I can't really figure out the difference between Google Earth, the maps app (google's) that comes on the iPhone, and the google maps that you can use in google (if this makes sense?). There are subtle differences in the way they LOOK...but are there any major differences I'm not seeing? Why would one have Google Earth, Google Maps, and the google apps (map), on their phone? Sorry if this is a really silly question...
Also, does anyone know if it's possible to view a map of a city and have it show ALL of your pins at once? For example, it would show a pin where my 6 friends live, my favorite 4 restaurants that I've labeled, and everyone in my contacts list etc.
Thanks for your patience and help!

    Julian,
    Thanks for the reply.
What I was getting at was the apparent inability to view multiple contacts as map pins on the iPhone maps app. For example, if I were a connoisseur of Indian restaurants, and had my favourites listed in my contacts, it would be great to see all of my faves on the map so I could choose which is closest.
Since I bought my iPhone in 2009 I have thought that maps on the iPhone are window dressing and could be so much better for social and business use.

  • IOS' Maps App Improvements?

    Hello.
Is it me or is iOS v8.1.3's Maps app still bad like its traffic reports? I thought Apple was going to improve it years ago after they dumped Google Maps (still way better) and stuff.
    Thank you in advance.

    what is your question?

  • Star map apps Nokia Asha 308 - "response unknown"

I'm trying to download a star map app for the Nokia Asha 308 and have a couple of questions...
    1. I've tried downloading Norbsoft, but when I click the 'buy' link on the page on my phone, it brings up an error "Response unknown" with no other info or options.
    2. I'm having trouble finding other apps compatible with this phone, and am pretty new to the whole app thing - does anyone have any suggestions of star apps for Asha 308?
Thanks - hoping I can get this sorted before the Leonids meteor shower tonight :-)

Well, although I don't really understand what you just said, it would appear that it doesn't run it, just comes up with 'response unknown' perhaps the S40-S60 issue is the problem?
As I mentioned, I'm completely new to apps - to smart phones too, I'm a bit of a techno tard and just looking for some advice on a star map app that I can use with this phone.
    Thanks!

  • Possible to Open Maps.app via Browser URL?

I'm wondering whether it's possible to open the new Maps app via a localised URL that can be bookmarked?
    i.e. mac://home/applications/maps.app
Does anyone know of such a method?

    Hey Parbinder Johal,
Great question. On a Mac, you can bookmark this link to automatically open the Maps application:
    http://maps.apple.com/?q
You can also learn about rules for creating a valid map link at the following resource. For example, this link ( http://maps.apple.com/?q=cupertino ) will open a query of Cupertino, California.

  • 1Changing my location on Maps app

    Hello fellow iPeople,
I have a 1st gen. iPod touch, downloaded the new s-ware update to 2.1, got some apps from the store and now have a question/problem. Under the Maps app, google maps shows my location to be somewhere in North East Illinois, however I live in central Florida. I would like to be able to change my default location so my iPod knows where I live. I have my address saved in contacts, and it is also mapped, but whenever i touch the crosshairs to go back to my location, i go right back to Illinois. Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
    Message was edited by: Blue_Dragon

Touching the cross hairs makes the iPod use WiFi to find your location.
If the WiFi network you are connected to is incorrectly registered with SkyHook (i.e. the wrong location has been entered with skyhook for the WiFi router) then you will always be located there in maps.
