Maps app works without connection????

I'm sure there must be a reasonable explanation for this but I'm stumped. Yesterday my girlfriend got some directions using the Maps app while at home so she could flick through the route on the road. But as we were driving the marker showing our current position kept moving along the route with us. It even followed us when we went off the route. The iPod wasn't connected to any wifi source so how can this be possible? Any ideas?

Google Maps on 755P Without Connecting To Internet?

Hi all, new here and have a question...just bought a 755P (Verizon) and was under the (I now know) mistaken impression that the Google Maps feature would work without connection to the internet (and thus no data fees). I realized it did not have a GPS and thus would not have voice turn by turn directions, but thought at least just the maps would work without a data connection. Now that I know I was incorrect on that, is there any software I can download/buy that will give me maps without connecting to the Internet?
Also, my thought is I don't want to spend too much because I could go get a bottom end Garmin type GPS for not much over $100, but I like the idea of having one device, plus being in the phone, I'll always have it with me.
Any suggestions or ideas welcomed!
(I want to figure this out in case this requires a data card because I know I'll want to buy a data card to store music and I'm assuming if I need to buy a data card for mapping that the same one could be used for storing music?)

Toplink app works without oc4j,fails with security excp. in oc4j[SOLVED]

jdk version: 1.5.0.04 (installed normally with windows installer, no tampering)
JDeveloper version: 10.1.3.2.0 (base installation)
I'm new to JDeveloper and I'm working on SRDemo application from online ADF tutorial under JDeveloper. After 6th chapter I tried to run the app with embedded oc4j. After a login to app i got a toplink exception caused by a security exception. I've tried toplink part of the application with a standalone client it works without this strange problem. Also other toplink tutorials that i have work without oc4j.

This happens when i run toplink project inside oc4j, with a normal java client outside oc4j it works.
The strange thing is the root cause of the problem (the exception complaining about signer) . If the root cause of this problem was really correct system wide, neither security code samples nor the standalone client that i tried would have worked.
Only similiar issue I've found on the net is a problem that occured under eclipse due to a bug in previous versions of jce, but it seems this is no longer an issue.
No one other than me seems to have this problem, so this implies a problem with my system, but the root exception about signer information (which is not correct) says there is something wrong with toplink/oc4j runtime or there is some subtle bug.
I am trying to download another jdk1.5 version to see if this is a subtle bug of java-1.5.0.04 and oc4j, but either sun servers or my isp has a problem because the download is in the order of bytes and fails all the time.
I think there can be a problem with the java2.policy file under oc4j config dir, but i don't know if it is really used and necessary or not.
I don't know much about oc4j config so i need some help to proceed. thanks in advance

Sorry, I tried something that I should have tried before posting, that gives another information about my problem.
when i use standalone oc4j using start_oc4j.bat under jdev/bin, I also get the same security exception stack (nothing deployed to server) during server initialization. the default java command in start_oc4j.bat is this:

Maps not working when connected to local-only WiFi network

Just FYI, while I had my iPhone connected via WiFi to the network my Time Capsule created but with the TC not connected to the internet (cable modem down), Maps (on the iPhone) refused to load any new content. Switched off WiFi, everything worked again.
It could be that any app (not just Maps) that required internet connectivity would not work in such a situation. I'll test that tonight.

Sorry to hear about any trouble with your picture messages! Let's get everything back up and running for you. Is mobile data still turned on when you're connected to WiFi? If so, can you try using the Google Hangouts application for your messaging instead? I'd like to test if this will allow you to receive picture messages even when on WiFi. Keep us posted!

Is Maps App Working Again?

Like others, I found the Maps application severely flawed once upgrading to ios 6.x. More than once I drove WAY out of my way on a wild goose chase due to inaccurate mapping.
I finally threw in the towel and downloaded both GoogleMaps and MapQuest apps but dislike the ads, the unnecessary (for me) bells and whistles ... I crave the simplicity of the way I used to be able to navigate with the original Maps application.
My husband tells me that he's used it recently and it worked fine. Checked out this forum and could find no evidence of other happy campers.
Does anyone know the 'definitive' answer of whether or not the Maps app is working properly again?

This is my opinion only:
I think the Maps app has improved dramatically since Day 1.   Is it perfect? No.   Will it ever be? No.
However, I don't use Maps as my GPS/mapping app.   I have GPS built into my car, and use that exclusively for navigation, and believe it or not that unit will send me on a wild goose chase every now and then.
Is there one app better than others? Sure - but the answer depends on who you ask, where you live, what your expectaions are, etc.
I live in NYC, and for me Google Maps is the best option since it incorporates mass transit.   When Apple Maps can finally do that, maybe my answer will change.

HT5429 Is there a way to turn off the turn-by-turn navigation voice from the map app itself without ending the directions?

I know that it is possible to turn off the voice for turn-by-turn directions completely (in the settings menu), but is there a way to temporarily silence the voice from the maps app itself? For example, if I am driving to the freeway from my house I know how to get there and do not want my phone talking to me, but I would like to keep the directions active and turn on the voice once I need it later in the directions. Is there an easy way to do this without going to the settings app each time?

I don't think there's any way to do it, but I'd like that feature as well: on long trips I listen to an audiobook and when I'm travelling routes that I already know well, I mostly want to use navigation to route around any traffic that might occur.
In both cases, the voice directions aren't welcome, and I can get by with the on-screen display… and in other GPS navigation software or hardware I've had, muting the voice was an easily accessed option. (Garmin USA on the iPhone, for example, has a 'mute' icon available right on the maps display).
I've requested that feature at http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html - you may wish to do the same.

How does the Maps app work?

I'm considering buying the software upgrade, but I don't understand how the maps application can possibly work. It requires wi-fi, so how will it work when you're trying to get somewhere and you're driving? Certainly there's no wi-fi in the car!

You could just drive into a sub-division and hope somebody has an unprotected wireless network when you are lost...
The map app was originally made for the iPhone which with the unlimited data plan through At&T it can update the map and search on the fly as long as you are in a service area. Unfortunately for the ipod the map app is not as powerful as the iPhone because you can't get a map anywhere, it is the same app, but you get the idea.

I updated my 4 to OSI6 and now need a map app that works.

Mapquest does have access to your contacts!!
Make sure do not have Restrictions On for Contacts, open Mapquest, in the Address or Business search bar select CONTACTS, it will ask you for access to your Contacts.
Then close app and restart and all your contacts info will show up, or if you start typing a known address it will show you the Contacts Associated or related to the address your searching.

How do you make a stand-alone app work without seeing a command window...

I'm new to Java so please forgive the very basic question I'm asking. All the apps I've learned how to make so far cause a command window to appear along with the GUI. How do you keep the command window from showing up?

According to the forum here, people have said that you need to create a .jar file. I'll need to look into the specifics. Sounds a bit confusing at first. There was also mention of starting the app like so:

To use Find my iPhone you have to set it up on your iOS device before you lose it. Your device also needs to have iOS 5, be switched on and connected to wi-fi/3G.

Map app not displaying correctly

I recently downloaded the most recent os 8.1.3 on my iphone 4s. Now the map app (apple default) doesn't display correctly. I only see the grid and my location dot in standard view, no street names or lines, no details whatsoever. This is affecting any app that uses the apple default (Zillow, trulia, etc). My husband has the exact same iphone 4s and he has the most current os and his map app works fine. I'm thinking that I should try to reload the most current os but since it is the most current, there doesn't seem to be an obvious way since all message are "you have the most current version". I could also try to download just the most recent version of the map app but since it is a default, I don't know how. Any suggestions?

If you are having issues with your Maps application not displaying correctly, you may want to try some things to troubleshoot.
First, quit all running applications and test again -
Force an app to close in iOS
Next, I would try restarting and if needed resetting the iPhone -
Restart or reset your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
If the issue is still present, you may want to restore the iPhone as a new device -
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups

Can I switch on ACD 23" without connecting it to laptop at all?

I've just now bought an Apple Cinema Display 23" and I connected it to power source via power brick. It is not yet connected to the laptop (DVI socket) as I dont have a DVI to Mini-DVI adapter which I've just ordered.
I was expecting the LED light on the ACD to switch on or at least blink when connected to power source but it did not. Is my expectation incorrect. Will ACD at all come to life when connected to a laptop? Is there no way I can test if ACD itself is working without connecting it to any laptop?
The reason I want to do this is the person I bought the ACD from didn't know if it was working or not and I dont want to spend any more money on it if I can find out whether it'll work or not without connecting to a laptop.

I bought the thunderbolt to DVI adapter and connected my Apple mac book pro to the ACD23 now and was hoping that it'll show some signs of life atleast. But it was as dead as it has ever been. There is not even a slight blink on its LED or change in screen color. My suspicion is that its power adapter has gone bad but checking its price, it is too costly to take a risk buying it without being 100% sure this is the issue.
Has anyone else faced a similar issue and if so, would you recommend me to buy a new power adapter?
