Maps in E72, compass and map rotation glitches

The new OviMaps 3.03 and E72 with the magnetic compass has a few problems:
- The compass "takes over" map rotation in E72, the map will not rotate according to GPS heading information at all. If the compass does not work (magnet nearby, inside a car etc.), the map will not rotate automatically, it's relying solely on the compass. Very annoying, especially since the compass loses its calibration quite easily. Thus, the map is unsuable in a car or a "spora" (tram).
- When using an external bluetooth GPS, the compass is "whited out", apparently being overridden by the heading data from the GPS. ...which is not shown, the compass wheel simply turns white. This happens as long as a BT GPS is used and is giving speed and heading to the E72. This is a clear bug. Nokia, please solve this.
- There is apparently no way to get the E72 OviMaps 3.03 to rotate according to GPS heading info?
- The tendency to lock the position to a nearby road is much too strong in 3.03. This is very bad, since the map rotation is affected by the orientation of the road onto which the dot is placed, further hampering the direction of map rotation. Since most people will use the OviMaps while walking, this "road locking" tendency needs to be tuned down a lot. It makes the compass &rotation ever less usable.
- The "simplified" user interface of OviMaps is now giving even less GPS information than before. Next it will probably be as useless a an iPhone, when it comes to wanting to know how many satellites it is trying to get a fix on. Believe it or not, this is very useful information to anyone who wants to get a fix in a challenging environment. It's frustrating to watch a single yellow line blinking an not having a clue wheter one is missing one or four satellitse fixes to get a location.
Has anyone else been having these same problems, especially with the rotation? (E72-1 022.007, OviMaps 3.03)
I've played with a huge bunch of different GPS & Mapping devices ever since the NAVSTAR system went public some 20 years ago. It is fun to see how the system is now quickly becoming a household thing in every single pocket, but to keep it genuinely helpful you need to be extra careful with these little features and tunings.
(BTW; I've never gotten the compass to calibrate with the 8-move instructed in the manual. 4 or 5 quick flicks of the wrist are the only way to get the thing calibrated at all)
In many other ways, the OviMaps is a nice and handy application. Thanks.

Hi  my fE 72 firmware ver is 024.029, upgraded to 3.03 maps two days back. There are issues and Nokia better not sleep on them other wise this is useless for the users.
The problems in previous and this ver -
- the compass does not lock easily, will remain in yellow  or red, do what everr u do?
- As pointed out in by you, in side car or near any electric applices , the compass direction  goes heywire.
- sycronisation gets stuck
TYhe new version -
- In old version there was option in the setting to turn the compass on or off , so while driving if the compass is not getting locked, u could turn it off and by default the map would orient itself in the driving direction. now as pointed out by you. the the map compass doesnt get locked or the calibration doesnt stay at speed and the map gets locked with north to top, so there are situation when your poisition in the maps is moving in diametrically opposite/ tangential direction to your travel .
How can a compasny bungle  up on such safety and reliability issues, specially on a product ( navigation/maps)which is in existance for almost a DECADE AND IS ABSOLUTELY MATURE PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY WISE.
tHE e72 SOFTWARE WAS DEVELOPED IN SLUMBER  SO IS THIS 3.03 MAPS. nOKIA GET OUT OF HYBERNATION, THERE ARE TOO MAY ALTERNATIVES FOR CUSTOMERS NOW.
Nokia either take off this from shelf or be ready to get public lawsuits on accout of accidents caused by people driving with these maps on.

  • E72 Compass extremely not accurate

    Hello. I have problem with E72 digital compass. It's not accurate - it is mistaken about direction I face in about 30-35 degrees and it makes compass useless. I've tried to turn off compass in Ovi maps, restarting device and recalibrating compass- still not accurate at all. I've turned all rotate sensors off and recalibrated compass- still no result. I live in Moscow (Russia) and got map of Russia downloaded by Nokia Maps Loader (or however this application made by Nokia called). Is there anyway to hard reset compass to factory defaults and recalibrate it? Or any other way to fix it's accuracy?
    P.S. After each calibrating compass indicator tuns green, but in fact it isn't well calibrated as accuracy is very bad. And it always mistaken in the same way - compass points direction like it is turned to the right for 30-35 degrees. So the same accurate problem all the time - compass thinks he is turned to the right for 30 degrees but in fact it's not accurate.

    Dear hadimassa, thank u for your reply. Unfortunately it is not very helpfull, but I appreciate your help anyway. I've read E72 manual and it's part about compass calibration. I know how to calibrate it so the indicator turnes green. And the point is not the accuracy of GPS - the GPS itself works brilliant if there are no hight buildings around. The point is that even 'calibrated' compass (when indicator is already green) points the direction wrong. Not totally wrong, but compass is mistaken for about 30-35 degrees. And even if GPS status bar is nearly fully green (many satellites seen by device) accuracy of compass doesn't improve. Maybe it is connected with my journey in tram. When I turned on Ovi Maps in tram digital compass went completly mad - pointing different directions every 3 seconds. But I thought it was because of electromagnetic field of the tram. Maybe it did damaged compass of my E72 by anyway? Is it possible?

    Open your iDVD project and go into the Map mode.  Made sure the autostart bin on the left is empty.
    Click to view full size
    If you find a video in that bin remove it, save the project as a disk image and check the disk image with DVD Player.  Then you can burn the disk image to disk with Disk Utilitiy at 4x for optimal burning.

    I need Help !

  • Odd and even rotating pages by file name

    Hi all,
    Hoping someone can help me trouble shoot my script below.
    The aim is to determined if the last two digits of the file name are odd or even and then rotate the file accordingly.
    I have been able to get the page rotation work by it's self but it seems to do nothing at all when trying to get the last two digits of the filename and use them as the variable "pgNum".
    Files will be named using the following convention....
    aa-02-02.pdf
    Thank you in advance for you help.
    =======================================================================================
    var re = /.*\/|\.pdf$/ig;
    var filename = this.path.replace(re,"");;
    var pgNum = filename.substring(-2);
    try {
        if(pgNum % 2) {
            var crtpagerotate = this.getPageRotation({nPage:i});
            this.setPageRotations({nStart: i, nEnd: i, nRotate:(270+crtpagerotate)%360});
        else {
            var crtpagerotate = this.getPageRotation({nPage:i});
            this.setPageRotations({nStart: i, nEnd: i, nRotate:(90+crtpagerotate)%360});
    catch (e)
        console.println("Batch Aborted: " + e )

    Try this:
    var re = /\.pdf$/i;
    var filename = this.documentFilename.replace(re, "");
    var pgNum = +filename.slice(-2);

  • Rotation glitch?

    I'm a bit lost on why AE is doing this.
    I create a null object and make it a 3d layer. I rotate it 90 degrees on the Y axis and then start rotation the X, and Z axis and they do the exact same thing. whats the deal?

    Type "gimbal lock" and "Euler rotation order" into your favorite search engine. Simple mathematics.

    Good gracious.  It sounds like you were able to rotate the canvas a more or less exact multiple of 90° or you'd have spotted that it was skewed.  I just tried it using the r shortcut, and while it is doable, it is not particularly easy to rotate the canvas to a point where it could fool you.  What does surprise me, is that while the Options bar shows the degree of rotation while the r key is depressed, I could see nothing on the UI to tell me that the canvas was rotated.  That's something that you might want to start a thread on the Photoshop Feedback page.

    Anyway, Escape is the usual way to cancel rotate canvas.

  • 3D repousse objects and linking / rotation question

    In Photoshop CS5 Ext, I have 4 layers, each with a 3D repousse object on them. I want to somehow link them, so that I can rotate the object as a whole (or the camera), but also want to still be able to manipulate the objects separately (like rotate and position). Is there a way to do this in PS, or does this need to be done in another program like Flash? Tried unsuccessfully using merge 3D, linking, grouping...
    Thanks,
    John

    Thanks Steve for the reply and screenshot.
    I see that 3D panel will let me rotate, etc., but it doesn't look like I will be able to rotate objects separately using animation from the timeline, will it? That is another thing I forgot to mention that I want to do, is be able to animate (rotate and move) the objects separately.
    Thanks,
    John

    Hi John,
    Merging 3D layers should be what you want. When you tried this what failed? If it was that you could only transform all of the objects instead of each separate object, then you'll need to make sure you are using the appropriate 3D tool. The UI needs some work to make this a bit easier to discover.
    There are 3D Mesh tools in the 3D panel that allow you to manipulate individual meshes, instead of the whole scene (3D Object tools).

    Hi ravelvanto,
    mine too (iPad 3/WiFi) hasn't this features.
    Especially the flash can't be realized because there is a simple lack of a flash light.
    Why there is no compass, calculator (I'm using the Wolfram App instead), or the weather app etc. I don't know...

  • After updating my iPad 2 it locked up and now displays an apple and a rotating busy symbol, for hours now. What can I do ?

    after updating my iPad 2, through itunes, the iPad has locked up and diplays an apple and a rotating "busy" button
    hours later it is still the same and dosen't respond to any switches. Any ideas?

    Have you tried a reset ? Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider if it appears), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
    Otherwise you could try this page http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4097

  • Math and circle rotation

    Okay this is a math question! :-)
    I worked on a logo for a class I'm taking in Illustrator. It looks like this:
    I created one tiny chair icon and then rotated it around the circle to space them. Thing is: I had to guess at the angle until I got it spaced right. I know there must be some way to figure that out mathematically without doing trial-and-error, only I don't know what it is. Unfortunately, I was always good at algebra but terrible at geometry! Does anyone know that type of math? I'd love to learn that as I expect to encounter many instances of this.
    Thanks, Phyllis

    360 divided by the number of elements will give you the angle.
    See
    Teri Pettit's tutorial on transform effects
    , especially the second "page" on rotation.
    Something like that can also be done with a scatter brush. The proper brush setting will take care of rotating each element with respect to your path, and you can futz around with sliders to get the size and spacing of elements you want.

  • How do I reinstall iOS7 Compass and Passbook apps?

    In an effort to clean up my apps I erased the iOS7 Compass and Passbook apps (surprised that this was possible as it hasn't been in previous iOS versions). Howeber, I would like to get them back without having to make a full restore. How do I do this?

    No you didn't... They are not standard iOS Apps on the iPAD.

  • I started to update my macbook pro and was told i needed to restart, which i did. that  was about 6 hours ago and all i see is an apple and a rotating circle. what do i do?

    ! started to update my system and was told to restart. I did. it has now been about 6 hours and all i see is an apple and a rotating circle. what is happening?

    Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    The first step in dealing with a boot failure is to secure your data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since your last backup, you can skip this step.
    There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to boot. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.a. Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at the startup chime, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.”
    b. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, boot the non-working Mac in target disk mode by holding down the key combination command-T at the startup chime. Connect the two Macs with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable. The internal drive of the machine running in target mode will mount as an external drive on the other machine. Copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    c. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
    Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to boot, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can boot now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    If you've booted from an external storage device, make sure that your internal boot volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
    Step 3
    Boot in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
    Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
    The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
    When you boot in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, your boot volume is damaged and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to step 5.
    If you can boot and log in now, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
    If the boot process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 4
    Sometimes a boot failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 5
    Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select your startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
    This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then reboot as usual.
    Step 6
    Boot into Recovery again. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, follow the prompts to reinstall the OS. If your Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Note: You need an always-on Ethernet or Wi-Fi connection to the Internet to use Recovery. It won’t work with USB or PPPoE modems, or with proxy servers, or with networks that require a certificate for authentication.
    Step 7
    Repeat step 6, but this time erase the boot volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically reboot into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer your data from a backup.
    Step 8
    A dead logic-board battery in a Mac Pro can cause a gray screen at boot. Typically the boot failure will be preceded by loss of the startup disk and system clock settings. See the user manual for replacement instructions.
    Step 9
    If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested.
