Well, as there is now a wiki, I think that a good idea would be to move all tutorials and how-to presents in the forum to the wiki, or at least to make pages in the wiki pointing to the pages on the forum, until it gets moved.
Sometimes, newbies do not find the infos they are looking for in the forum (where as it's present), or the information is in too many different threads, so the wiki is a really good solution to this.

A vim color scheme which imitates ArchLinux Mousepad cobalt
I like ArchLinux Mousepad cobalt scheme, and I am a vim user. So I made a copy for vim.
Hopefully this scheme added to official repository.

Fresh archlinux server install, something seems wrong
Hi there!
Haven't updated my archlinux build on my server since well years, because i've been very content with the stable product. Now after error after error trying to build a newer version of sabnzbd, I decided to re-install archlinux instead. I've noticed a lot of new additions since I last installed archlinux, or linux in general.
This is a clean install with very little added. I did however install aria2 (for performance). Everytime I try to run a pacman upgrade I recieve this huge output of information, is this normal?

How to become microft community contributor or MVP
Hi,
How can i achieve MCC / MVP award. :-)
Cheers, Hemendra-MCTS "Yesterday is just a memory,Tomorrow we may never see"Thanks for asking this question! Everybody also wants to know this!
Sometimes answers aren't what we want them to be. The process might not be as detailed as we want, but that's by design (for flexibility and other reasons). Since this forum is to discuss recognition, the recognition aspect is as follows: When
you become an MCC or MVP, then you receive the appropriate "MCC" or "MVP" mark.
To find out how to become an MCC or MVP, we should go check out their sites and ask them. The "MCC" and "MVP" marks on here only reflect that the award was given... and the Recognition Points might inform the award. But the award itself has nothing
to do with the Recognition system or the forums. So here's the answer and links for you to find out more information if you want it...
MICROSOFT COMMUNITY CONTRIBUTOR (MCC)
Q14. How do I contact Microsoft about the Community Contributor Award?
A14. You can send questions to the Microsoft Community Contributor Global Administrator at
[email protected] (MCCGA at microsoft.com).
FAQ:
https://www.microsoftcommunitycontributor.com/faq.aspx
PROCESS: Current MVPs and Microsoft personnel recommend people as MCCs based on quality, quantity, and impact on "online technical communities." Current MVPs and Microsoft personnel then evaluate those recommended on the same factors (impact on
online technical communities) and base the award on those evaluations. If you think they should be more transparent about the process, let them know with the links above.
Tips to becoming an MCC (based on the FAQ):
1) Make an impact in the community, using tools like TechNet Forums, Gallery, and Wiki.
2) Become noticed by MVPs and Microsoft's MCC representatives (start building relationships with these folks and collaborating).
MOST VALUALBE PROFESSIONALS (MVP):
Become an MVP:
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpbecoming (if it doesn't open, paste into a new tab or window)
Nominate an MVP:
http://mvp.support.microsoft.com/gp/mvpnominate (if it doesn't open, paste it into a new tab or window)
Process: After reading the "become an MVP" page, you'll see that the process is rigorous. "MVP nominees undergo a rigorous review process. A panel that includes members of the MVP team and Microsoft product groups evaluates each nominee's technical expertise
and voluntary community contributions for the past 12 months. The panel considers the quality, quantity, and level of impact of the MVP nominee's contributions." Essentially the panel evaluates the nominees and then bases their award on those evaluations in
quality, quantity, and level of impact.
Tips to becoming an MVP (based on the MVP site):
1) Give quality assistance, advice, processes, scripts, and consultation. Test your own advice and ask first. Experts in your area will be evaluating samples of your community work. You don't want them to be evaluating the one communication issue you had
or mistake you accidentally made (and thus thinking that you make it a regular practice).
2) Give high-quantity contributions. Be active in your technology's forums and on blogs. The TechNet and MSDN forums are being monitored by current MVPs and Microsoft personnel.
3) Share your knowledge in blogs, Wiki articles, white papers, and Galleries. You must create your own unique content and help build the community around your content.
4) Speak at conferences, local groups, and user groups. Speak online in virtual events. Go show your expertise and teach large groups. These conferences and events are different for every product. Go find them.
5) Become the leader. Instead of just plugging into conferences, events, local groups, and user groups, build them, organize them, and lead them. Bring the community off-line.
So even if this isn't what we want, this is what the programs have made available, and you can contact them for more information.
Thanks!

Helping the Community: Giving and Receiving Kudos
Members,
We wanted to highlight one of the major components of the Verizon Community – Kudos. Giving Kudos is a way for community members to give positive feedback to another member based on the contents of a particular forum post. Simply put, it tells the person receiving the Kudo that their post was helpful to the discussion and deserves to be recognized.
Besides recognizing individual excellence in the community, using Kudos lets the receiving member know their time and effort in assisting with a question is appreciated, thereby increasing the likelihood they will continue being supportive within the community. In addition, giving and receiving Kudos is a component of the Community Ranking process.
How to Give Kudos
If a member views a post that they believe warrants congratulations, they may give that poster a Kudo by:
On the message from the member you’d like to give the Kudo to, click on the yellow Kudo button on the right side of the post.
Once clicked, the Kudu image will show the addition of at least one (1) Kudo point. Multiple members can Kudo the same post, so that post can be Kudo’d a maximum of 99 times.
Once you have given the post a Kudo, each party will receive credit – the original poster received points in the Kudos Received category and the member who awarded the Kudo receives Kudos Given credit. Kudos can be applied to Verizon Community Forums, Blogs and Idea Exchange entries. The most frequently Kudo’d community members are displayed on the community homepage.
Important notes about Kudos
Members cannot Kudo their own posts, nor can members Kudo the same post more than once.
Anyone who has contributed a post to the community may give a Kudo to a post.
Kudos from some members may have increased weight, e.g., instead of one point for each Kudo Given, these members Kudos count for two (2) points.
Be mindful of Terms and Conditions
As always, we welcome your feedback and ask
that you post any comments or suggestions you may have.
Sincerely,
The Verizon Community TeamThere are a few ways:
- Work on the wiki, if you like writing documentation for distros.
- Improve Arch's system utilities - just wander around in the bugtracker until you find something unassigned that looks like something you could tackle.
- Write random utilities like I have and throw them in Community Contributions
If you want to open your own mirror, you basically just need good bandwidth, both up and down, and either an uncapped link or a very expansive cap. From there, the mirror maintainers probably have a set of scripts set up to keep all the mirrors in sync.

[risolto] pacman community repo
salve,
pacman -S ontv ftw
ontv package not found, searching for group...
error: 'ontv': not found in sync db
stessa cosa per gtkpackman.
questo è pacman.conf:
cat /etc/pacman.conf
[options]
HoldPkg = pacman glibc
SyncFirst = pacman
#XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c -O %o %u
#CleanMethod = KeepInstalled
[core]
Server = ftp://mi.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/archlinux/core/os/i686
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[community]
Server = ftp://mi.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/archlinux/community/os/i686
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
[extra]
Server = ftp://mi.mirror.garr.it/mirrors/archlinux/extra/os/i686
Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
#[testing]
#Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
#[unstable]
#Include = /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist
a me sembra strano che core extra e community includono lo stesso file.
ho inserito manualmente i server, ma il risultato non cambia.
cmq è tutto normale?? quei pacchetti dovrebbero esserci o no??
grazie

The community.db.tar.gz seems to be not updated since May 14th. As such, all packages released after that date seems to be not available to pacman.
Is there some sort of maintenance going on or something?shining wrote:

This explians why today failed installing two kdestyle from comunity, as they appear in AUR, but in the ftp they aren't.
Well, they are on the ftp, it's just that the database isn't not in sync with the package itself.
Like in the other thread for firefox, you can still install these packages by giving the full path to the packages to pacman.
Or just wait that someone fix it
Yes! they are! :-) when i wrote the post, i look for "kstyle", "kdestyle" instead, so, i didn't find them :-P

[SOLVED]EasyStroke no longer works after upgrading Xorg....
Hi,
First i would just like to take the time to say, that ArchLinux kicks butt! I just joined the forum, but have been using Arch for about a month. Thus far, i have had very few problems....until tonight
I keep my system really up-to-date (almost everyday i update). Tonight, there was an update for Xorg (1.10? i think).
Anyway, One of the applications that i use is Easystroke - which after the upgrade has stopped working, i even recompiled it (which went fine) but still it doesnt work.
a more detailed explanation;
1. the app starts up fine, and appears to be working.
2. i draw a gesture on the screen, and i can see easystroke drawing them.
3. at this point the usually, i would stop drawing and easystroke would execute my gesture. but now instead, it doesn't properly release the gesture key (second button on my Wacom Bamboo stylus).
4. Easystroke has a "history page" that allows you to see how accurate your gestures are, now it shows absolutely nothing.
I have searched around with google, and no luck. I tried to get a more verbose output from easystroke, but it doesn't tell me anything. So, now i am kind of stuck
After the upgrade (and a reboot), i tested the system to see if there were other problems. So far, i have found zero.
I've tested my tablet, all of my main applications; Maya2011, Mypaint, gimp, Compiz++, Jackd, wine, etc. Everything is fine. I have also went through the log viewer, and nothing caught my eye that would hint to what has gone wrong....
if anyone else is having the same problem, or has a possible solution, please let me know.
I can deal with not using it for now, but not having Easystroke running, seriously hinders my workflow and navigation
on my Arch Desktop.... and now i am wondering whether or not easystroke even runs with the latest X???

Hello,
Welcome to the forums. Your post is fine in every way. Introduction, problem description, what you have done -- perfect. The package you reference is from the AUR which, as you know, is not in the main stream Arch distribution. These community contributions are essential Arch, but have their own area in the forum to differentiate them.
Moving this thread to AUR issues...
As it turns out. This isn't a bug in AUR/easystroke. It is a bug in the latest xserver 1.10.902 (found in the "extra" repo) Many applications are affected. Opera, chrome (if you are using the mouse gestures features for navigation) and it turns out that while i thought Maya wasn't affected, in reality, it is totally affected. most applications that use a mouse with right-clicks, middle clicks do not work properly.
it's an upstream bug, that affects all distributions using the latest Xorg. I am not filing a bug report, because as i understand it, this bug has already been reported upstream by Ubuntu-devs (on launchpad).
that latest update for Xserver, should have been tested better, before being an update available through pacman.
On my system, i do not use any testing repos, only core, extra, and community. I do this to avoid situations, just like this. lol.
I have work i need to get done today, but unfortunately, the only way that could happen is if i downgrade xserver (which i don't think is a smart idea). So, i guess i must wait for the next xserver update for arch. hopefully this happens in the next 24hours.
I suppose i will have to use OSX for now, until this is properly addressed and fixed.
anyway, i just wanted to point out that this bug has nothing to do (specifically) with Easystroke or AUR, that is just how i first noticed the bug. ( i just wanted to point that out, as you are a moderator ). This bug is in the main repos for Arch, and anyone updating today (or yesterday) will be affected, if they use applications where it's noticable.

"error: command failed to execute correctly" on several packages
Last night, when I updated before shutting down, I got a few errors, as in the subject. As it was very late, I thought I'd pick it up today.
Unfortunately, the pacman log only lists one of the ones that failed as libgpg-error. The other one that I remember erroring was gawk. There were a few others, maybe four or five, but I couln't reliably recall them all, so won't guess.
Here's a new attempt to reinstall gawk with --debug. I did the same with libgpg-error and the error occurred at the same place, with very similar output, so I think the issue is the same for all failures.

pacman thinks the upgrade/reinstall was successful in that the latest version is installed.
I did a search on the forums and the only other issue that I thought was connected might be microcode not up to date, but I had followed the update instructions some time back and as far as I can tell, the microcode is up to date.
I have two main questions:
1) How do I work out what's causing the error, from above?
2) Is there a way I can work out which packages gave the error, so I can make sure they're installed properly?
Thanks. The following packages also had problems
( 2/17) upgrading glibc
error: command failed to execute correctly
( 3/17) upgrading binutils
error: command failed to execute correctly
( 4/17) upgrading coreutils
error: command failed to execute correctly
( 8/17) upgrading gcc
error: command failed to execute correctly
( 9/17) upgrading gcc-fortran
error: command failed to execute correctly
(10/17) upgrading gcc-libs
error: command failed to execute correctly
Does anybody have a clue?
Thanks, -
[Solved] lxde and pcmanfm missing options
Solved, read here: http://blog.lxde.org/?p=737 (both intentionally missing)
After last night's pcmanfm update (0.5.2-1 to 0.9.7-1), my pcmanfm is missing the tree option in the left panel (and judging from other posts, other things as well that I haven't needed yet).
Also my lxde now does not have a background nor is the entire tab available anymore in the "Desktop Settings" option (or anywhere anymore). It is a totally different "Preferences" window only giving General, Display, Volume Management, Advanced tabs.
I have regularly switched between ratpoison and lxde|openbox. I use "exec ck-launch-session lxde" in my ~/.xinitrc. I also tried "exec startlxde" which didn't help. I manually startx.
I have searched (and asked in #archlinux but nobody answered) and found these threads that touched on similar problems with pcmanfm but nothing about my issues that I could see. I also looked in lxde forums but no luck.

I'm a bit lazy you see. Now everything is back to normal. I'll keep it that way till it breaks the dependencies. If the pcmanfm developer claims it is intentional, then so be it. In the meantime I'll think of a way to get rid of pcmanfm alltogether and to replace it with another means of handling transparency & desktop bg in my arch setup.
feh (an image viewer allows you to set backgrounds. I have pcmanfm installed, but I rarely use it since most times I just use cli commands to browse thru files. There are other light and fast file managers on the wiki if you were looking to switch.
Common File Managers
Lightweight File Managers
Also there are others that Archers have developed which you will find in the Community Contributions sub-forum. Ranger and qtfm come to mind

Acer Aspire One 751h [script]
Hello There..!
I'm a new member of this forum and also at Arch Linux... Because of seen a lot of posts saying about problems with this gma 500 card ,i post a script that i created (for personal use) to auto-configure my Acer Laptop after a new installation..
I hope it will help ..
How it works :
Downloading all the files and execute as root [ ./acerAspireOne_configScript <username> ]
Before running this command you must have created a user and ofcourse have updated pacman...
Please feel free to modify or do anything you want with them...

Hey guys,
for quite some time I've been working on dstatus for my own desktop. To share and improve dstatus I'd like to introduce it to the ArchLinux community now. dstatus is a small but expandable status application designed for use with dwm. While it certainly doesn't fit the suckless approach due to its use of plugins it now works rather nice.
Features:
- dstatus features a plugin system. This makes it easy to add new plugins that add information not accessible right now.
- dstatus features groups. Groups bind together parts of your status line. If a dynamic part of that group becomes undisplayable (muted volume for example) the whole group will be hidden.
- dstatus' format can be configured via config.h. It's syntax is described in the project's README.
- dstatus' plugins can be configured via config.mk. It enables to exclude certain plugins from compilation and installation
Currently there aren't many plugins, just some basic stuff for time, volume, mpd and battery. I'd be happy to accept contributions for new plugins.
If you're interested compile and try this small application and provide some feedback. The project can be found at Bitbucket.
Here's a link to the dstatus AUR package.
Regards,
Patrick

No. Bash can show colours because it can parse and interpret the escape sequences. Dwm code lacks of that feature and for this reason you have to apply a patch.
Thanks, that's what I was asking. If xsetroot -name can accept bash sequences then wouldn't it be simple just to use this to show color. @jasonwryan is right, I do need to read up more on dwm. Since I am in China it is problematic to search for things on the web even with a vpn and the suckless website is sparse on infomation.
Seems that this would be the easiest way to add color to the status bar but maybe "xsetroot -name" doesn't output in color even though it does have "-fg -bg" switches. -
Systemd is very annoying -- how can I disable timers for updatedb etc?
I deleted /usr/bib/systemd/system/multi-user.target.wants/updatedb.timer and touched the file to prevent its recreation after an update.
But the updatedb job kept running still. BTW, I have no job in /etc/anacrontab.
Now I delete /usr/bib/systemd/system/updatedb.timer and /usr/bib/systemd/system/updatedb.service and symbol link them to /dev/null. I do not know whether it will work or not yet.
The design philosophy for systemd seems broken. Why would many packages create lots of services and timer files and most of them are just one command line? the systemd timer functionality is already provided by cron perfectly.
If we disable some targets by removing, A package update will restore them. So the only way is to leave empty stubs there. Isn't it cumbersome?
Any suggestion?
Thanks.

And timers are enable/disabled/stated/stopped the same way as systemd service files.
This also does not belong is community contributions.

(Solved) package-query trying to downgrade pacman
i want to install yaourt on my system. one of its dependencies package-query (also AUR) depends upon pacman <= 3.6 for installing, while i have pacman 4.0.0rc1-1 on my system. so when i try to install it, it tries to downgrade my pacman to 3.5.4-4.
is there a way around it? any suggestions would be welcome, even if its very unlikely (i would love to tinker)

New network (and much more) monitor for XFCE panel
A few years ago I wrote a tiny app to show a text network monitor in the XFCE panel, resembling the previous one I was familiarized with (in KDE?).
The past month I started fixing a bug and ended in a full rewrite, but keeping the original simplicity (at least in the panel bar) despite that now reports far more than the network activity.
The installation instructions are the same: download a single file (no dependencies), compile it, add a Generic Monitor Applet (XFCE) to the panel and configure it to load the new executable.
I have updated the wiki page, but the full instructions and code is now hosted at github: "Hacker's Monitor for XFCE". Yes, it has a new name also.
Here follows a screenshot with the mouse over the applet to open the tooltip (yes, I was intentionally doing a dd from /dev/sda into /dev/null ):
