Marching Ants? I have solid line...

Whenever I make a selection with the lasso tool, marquee, etc... literally anything that should show "marching ants" I get a solid black line - hard to read against black, obviously.  Anyone know why?  I am hoping there's a preference somewhere to revert back (to the past 15 years of experience with the) marching ants... Thanks!
Using an intel 15" Macbook (white), CS5, OS 10.6.  I can provide more system info if needed.

BAM!  Holding down Command+Option+Shift did the trick immediately after restarting PS.  Resetting the tool (right click on the tool in the option bar) did not work.
To be perfectly honest, I can't say if it did that from day one.  I feel like it had the marching ants, and I must have fat fingered some quick key to change it.  The interface was so different from CS3 (which is what I was using previously), I wasn't aware of when it changed.  For instance, during panning, there's now inertia... Not a fan, but maybe it will grow on me.
Thanks for the quick and accurate answer, PECourtejoie!
(if it makes any difference at this point, yes, I am running OpenGL... "Basic" mode is the only available option)

  • Selection outline is black line instead of marching ants?

    Hi,
I'm making a selection using the Quick Selection tool and the outline is a black line, not the usual marching ants. I also tried drawing a shape with the rounded rectangle tool to make a manilla folder, so the tab had to overlap. I could not get the black line on the overlapping tab to go away. Is there any way to change this? How did it happen in the first place?
    Thanks,
    Kelly

I am not certain I understand you but I think you are using one of the shape tools which will create a shape layer and the shape is a path.
In order to make the path a selection you go to the Path panel and while the path is selected with the Path Selection Tool (Black Arrow) or selecting the path in
Path panel go to the bottom of the panel and hit the icon to make the path a selection as show or command or control click on the path in the panel.
Or you can right click or control click on the path in the document window and choose to make selection from the contextual menu.
I see you used the rounded rectangle tool so you are using a shape tool.

At the best, one condensor is dead. At the worst, graphics card. You must go to a technician for a thorough check.

  • What happened to the "marching ants" in Photoshop CS5?

When I use the lasso tool and lasso an object, it does not show the dashed lines,
aka marching ants, until I let go of my mouse.  Since I can not see the lasso outline,
it is hard to tell when I get back to the beginning.  This issue also occurs with the
crop tool and other tools.  It does not show the outline until you let go.  This is not
    good.

I sent a similar post here; I have had the same settings in preferences for years (with GL), and the same video card, and the "Cntrl H" does not change the "SOLID" outline to marching ants -- it use to toggle them on and off, but they are NOT there to toggle -- only SOLID line around the selection.
Rothage, what video card do you have?
The display driver, along with your video card, implements OpenGL, which has much complexity and many different versions and options.
If you've had the same video card for years, and you haven't changed anything, it almost certainly needs a driver update, if not a complete replacement.  It depends on how many years, but video cards that run Photoshop well with OpenGL acceleration have only been available for 3 or 4 years, and even today driver updates are being released that enable OpenGL functions not previously available.
Things move on.  Photoshop CS5 is using OpenGL differently than its predecessor, and it may turn out (depending on what video card you have) that to get the most out of the very latest Photoshop you'll need to upgrade to one of the very latest video cards.  The good news is that cards that run Photoshop very well can be had for well under $100 nowadays.
I suggest, at the very least, visiting the web site of your video card maker, and updating to their latest driver release.
You should also experiment with Photoshop's OpenGL advanced preferences, in the Edit - Preference - Performance menu.

  • Photoshop CS4 and the mysterious vanishing marching ants...

About ten minutes ago, as I was cropping photos in Photoshop CS4, the marquee tools suddenly lost their marching ants.
Now, when I click on the rectangular marquee tool and move the cursor to select an area, the outline of the selected area is invisible - until I let go of the mouse, when it suddenly appears as a solid line.
I assume I must've turned the marching ants off somehow by mistake. How do I turn them back on?
A swift web search suggests that I can hit Control+H or Command+H to turn the marching ants on and off. Neither of these work for me.
Other suggestions I've found are to 'reset' the tool (how?) - or install a new video card, which surely can't be an issue in my case. I have not installed any updates - this literally happened minutes ago, in mid-job.
I'm using a Mac, OSX 10.8.5 if that makes any difference…
There MUST be a simple 'click on such-and-such' solution. Thanks in advance if you know it!

Slight update - I have now discovered how to reset tools in Photoshop. Basically, I did what the video in the link below suggests.
    It didn't make any difference.
When I selected the rectangular marquee tool for resetting, a message in the box said  'No presets defined for current tool' - which presumably means there was nothing to reset. That would explain why it didn't work, then.
So if the marquee tools did not have any presets, why did the marching ants turn off - and how do I get them back?

  • Please Help!   "marching ants" do not appear anymore

After many years of the marching ants (15 or so), they all of a sudden do not appear when I "select" something.  I have had CS5 for around a year and they have been working just fine.  One minute they were normal, and now they are not.  It is so frustrating not to have them; I just have a solid line — not good.  I looked into the preferences several times, but could not find anything to address this.

  • Marching ants when resuming from sleep - software or hardware issue?

    Hello -
My new T400 thinkpad works great except periodically when resuming from sleep mode, I get squiggly marching ant lines across the screen. I can continue to log-in, open apps, etc but the lines won't go away until I restart.
Does anyone have any idea whether this is a hardware or software issue? I'm running Win 7 Enterprise.
Thanks in advance for any feedback.

This problem was fixed by disabling and then re-enabling the video driver. Updating the driver didn't work; it had to be diabled and re-enabled.  According to the technician the marching ants were a result of an incorrect refresh rate (it was refreshing either too fast or two slow).
At least that took care of the issue on my T400. Hope it helps!

  • CS4 selection marquee marching ants - bug

In Photoshop CS4 tryout in Mac OS X 10.5.5: Selection marquee is incorrectly drawn one pixel to the left of the actual selection. Simply create a new document, like 800 x 600 pixels, then select all (Command+A). The "marching ants" selection marquee is shifted one pixel to the left of where it should be. Can anyone confirm?
I'm unsure how to report this to Adobe. They don't make it very easy.
    -a

Well, since it appears as if a pixel is being split by a marquee selection, and since by definition a pixel
    cannot
be divided, then it's a display anomaly.
What you'll have to figure out is what region the marquee actually defines when you see what appears to be a line of marching ants running through the center of a pixel. Does the "partial" pixel end up inside or outside of the selection?
Then again, depending on the type of work being done, it may not really matter much, from a visual standpoint.

  • Transforming pen tool selections into marching ants

I have a PS issue that is bewildering to me:
I am creating a mask for a purse that has a chain link strap. I used the pen tool to make a selection around the outside. Then, I made a second selection on the inside part of the strap. Next, I went to paths and loaded the selection so that I can transform it into a mask.
The outside selection loaded just fine, and is currently part of my mask.
I still have the pen tool line around the inside of my purse strap, but I cannot get it to load into marching ants.
Is there something I am missing?
    Thanks!
    Ellen

After you make the paths select the path selection tool and set the option to Exclude Overlapping Shape Areas, then the complete
paths should load as a selection.

  • I have a line drawing (black on white paper) i have scanned and need to make the white paper transparent, maintaining the line drawing, can i and then HOW can i do this in PS?

i have a line drawing (black on white paper) i have scanned and need to make the white paper transparent, maintaining the line drawing, can i and then HOW can i do this in PS? this is for my business logo. ive used it for years but with a solid background. id like to have it just be the drawing over my photos with a transparent background.

First let me apologize for posting a reply that was only suitable for advanced users.  Photoshop is broad and powerful therefore has a huge learning curve.  In fact I would state no one knows and uses all of Photoshop.  When we first get Photoshop it intimidate us and we're very uncomfortable using it.  Many thing are not intuitive there in much learning involved.  After some time we begin to know something and we are able to do some thing.  Learning become rapid and we start playing in Photoshop.  It is very important to play with Photoshop.  Playing with Photoshop and asking for help with in forums like this IMO is the best way to learn.
Photoshop Power lies in layers, selection and automation.  However it takes knowledge to use photoshop well so most powerful tool you have ins Photoshop is the gray matter between your ears.  Most at one time or another want to watermark or put a logo on their image.  So its best to automate this process. All run into a problem in the process. "Size"  We find our assets vary in size and aspect ratios. Landscape, Portraits, Panoramas and others. This complicates automation.  Vector graphics works best when size vary greatly.  If you can not work out how to create a vector solution like a custom shape.  Create your Logo and watermark large thing scale down better the up. Text scale well for text uses vectors graphics however if you rasterize text it will not scale well.
I do not type or do English well so let me do some screen captures.  I can not stress enough how important Black, White, Grays and Blending is when it come to image processing.  Become friends with Multiply, Screen, Overlay and Luminosity blending.....
However when there is a white or black background though you can blend them you can not add a style like a drop shadow, emboss or make it invisible setting fill to 0 so only the style is visible.  When there is contrast between the logo and background it is easy to separate the two. To select the background and delet it to have the logo with a transparent background.  Many tools can be used to create the selection hee I use my action kill white.
Vector Shape would work better for scaling However it would be best to create the logo from scratch in a vector program like illustrator but I never had the resources to justify the Creative suite. I only had Photoshop.  Recently Adobe gave me and other a year subscription to the creative suite for our participation here.  I still have not installed anything but Photoshop,  A while back I found a program that can create vector patf for black and white art work.  It will not be as good as using something like illustrator. However vector paths can be edited in Photoshop and cleaned up some. Here is the PSD it 13MB because od the gradient http://www.mouseprints.net/old/dpr/AmPm24-7.psd

  • Can not draw a solid line after drawing a dashed line

I have been using a Graphics2D object in order to paint onto a buffered image and then transition that to a panel for viewing. The way the program works requires me to create the dashed line first through BasicStroke. After doing this I have tried to reset the setStroke with multiple new pens including BasicStroke(), BasicStroke(1.0f), and BasicStroke(1.0f, BasicStroke.CAP_BUTT, BasicStroke.JOIN_BEVEL, 0.0f, new float[] {1,0}, 0.0f).
Any ideas as to why I am still incapiable of drawing a solid line?

Any ideas as to why I am still incapiable of drawing
a solid line?Without seeing any code, I could guess, but my guess and a quarter wont even buy you a newspaper around here now a days.
Seriously though, you need to create a short, self contained, compilable example. Look here for an explanation on how to create this:

  • What happened to the ability to hide the "marching ants" (CTRL/CMD H) in Photoshop?  I cannot view the edges of my selection with the marching ants in the way!

I have been using Photoshop since version 2.5 when it came on 16 floppy disks.  In all of the versions I've purchased over the years (many) up to CS3, I have always been able to use CTRL+H (Windows) or CMD+H (Mac) to hide the "marching ants" selection outline.  This is immensely useful when making all sorts of adjustments where the edge of the selection must be viewed while "fiddling with the knobs" (so to speak).  Without being able to hide the selection boundaries ("marching ants"), I often have to make a best guess, undo the selection, get bummed that the edge isn't what I want, then have to undo, reselect, try again... over and over.   This is such a SIMPLE feature, but the lack of it is driving me crazy.  I searched HELP, but it didn't live up to the promise.  If there is a way to hide the marching ants, where is the menu item, and what is the shortcut?

You can assign Ctrl/Cmd H to hide Selection Edges (Edit > Keyboard Shortcuts) only, if you don't want to hide everything, but you will be warned if some other function has the shortcut.

Unfortunately you screen shot is not showing.  There is a bug in the forum software that sometime will prohibit images from appearing.  This may be one of those occasions.
Browsers such as Safari and Firefox do have small windows that will show downloads which will permit you to monitor the progress.  Without actually seeing what you are referring to, I cannot give you a definitive answer.
    Ciao.

  • I need to make my marching ants brighter

It seems like all of a sudden my marching ants are dim to nearly invisible as I'm making a selection. I haven't updated my software. They show up in some graphics better than others, and once I've made the selection, they show up white again. Example: I'll be using the rectangular marquee tool.
This happened at the same time that my custom blending options all reverted to the defaults. However, I hadn't made any custom marching ants settings. I don't know why my custon blending options reverted to the defaults, but it's possible that this was triggered by a hard shutdown that I had to do after my trackpad froze.

Yes, I recommend updating to the latest patch level.  The auto-updater doesn't always work reliably to let you know an update is available.
You'll need to close and reopen Photoshop to see the GPU change in action.
To be honest, since the release was a year ago (and it's late here right now) I don't remember all the new things that were added to Photoshop CS6 to make it a "must-have" - except for one:  If you shoot raw images the Camera Raw 7.x converter, which only works with Photoshop CS6, is well worth having.  Conversion quality is that much greater.

  • How do I make the marching ants bigger so I can see them?

    Hi.
I just "upgraded" to Photoshop CC and a new macbook pro on Yosemite.
I have been using photoshop since the 90's and this is the first time Im having serious problems with it.
The "marching ants" are impossible to see when using the magic wand to select.
Im sure there are better ways to select these days- but I have a method to my madness and need to be able to see what Im doing.
And yes my glasses prescription is up to date.
It feels like its a function of black and white imagery and this new screen which though "better" doesn't feel "better"- in fact it makes many things harder to see...
Any advice would be very very much appreciated.
    Thank-you

2880 must make your UI look very small.   I have a display that supports much higher res but to work comfortably, I drop my screen res back so I can see what I'm doing in PS and other Adobe apps.
