  • Quick selection tool not working correctly

I am trying to extract a portion of a photo...i tried using the selection tool to extract the portion on another picture, and it worked GREAT!
Now i'm trying to use it in another photo and the refine image tool isn't extracting it into a new layer like it did with the other one!
is there something that i may have clicked or turned off that is preventing me from making this extraction??

    Hello,
Could you be more specifc as to what you are doing here?
You mention using selections tools, including the Quick Selection tool, but these tools only create selections, they do not extract the material you have selected. A selection is like highlighting text in a word processor, after you have highlighted the text you can copy/paste it or modify it, but simply highlighting it doesn't do anything. Same with selections, once you have created a selection with a tool like Quick Selection you can how copy/paste it to a new image or perform adjustments to just that area.
I'm not sure what you mean by the "refine image tool", we don't have anything by that name. However, we do have a Refine Edge option that helps to make cleaner edges to your selection.

  • Magic Quick Selection Tool NOT working right. Help please?

We've used the magic quick selection tool lots and most of the time it works well.
It's very slow.............. v  e r y slow and I'm wondering if there's a patch to download from Adobe or
what to do to fix this.  We have pictures to edit and it's making the editing torture.  Please help?
    Thank you so much. tkccvalentine

It's the Quick Selection Tool in Photoshop Elements 9 and I'm trying to get the background and make it another layer so I can even out the color of the background then bring down the transparency.  Not sure if that makes sense.  I'm new to this....  Sometimes the area it will grab can go ...not fast.. but not slow.  Sometimes it's like it's just messed up and literally takes 30 seconds to process each move.  I rebooted my computer and re opened it and it helped a little.  It's not clear what causes it when it messes up and when it doesn't.  Just frustrating.  It's probably user error because I'm so new at Photoshop.   Thanks for your input.   I really appreciate it.

  • Quick Select Tool not working properly

    Hi Guys
I have a large photo merge image and wanted to content aware fill the missing bits. When i try to use the select tool it selects while i hold my mouse button down but as soon as i let go it seems to either disappear or jump to somewhere totally different. This only happens in the checkered part with no image, i can select things fine within the image itself.
My guess is that it won't work because the image is too large?? 48k x 5k
Thought i might just try the Spot Healing Brush instead, didn't seem to handle things too well.
Just to add to this, nothing to do with the size of the image as i can't select on a much small image either. Basically i can only select the actaully photo rather than the checkered part around the outside when i want to content fill.

After you ctrl click on the layer to load the layers transparency:
(click on the below screenshots for larger views)
    Select>Inverse
Select>Modify>Expand and use a value of about 10 pixels
(varies depending on how big your pano is)
    then Edit>Fill>Content Aware
You still might have to touch up some areas as the one above still needs.

  • Quick Selection Tool--Not So Quick

All selection tools except for QST in CS6 follow my commands.  QST lags behind.  Very slow response.  No changes made to PS or system.  Apple iMac 2011, running Mountain Lion, 8GB RAM.  Problem just started this week.  Product installed 3 months ago.  Any suggestions are appreciated.

Reset the tool.  Right click on tool icon in upper left corner of screen.

  • Quick select tool not working.

I'm making a really simple layer for a logo i've done it but i want to merge it with other programs and it don't copy anything.
(sorry if i said anything bad because i'm not perfect in english and adobe photoshop as well)

Please  rephrase your question.  I'm not sure what you are asking.  Do you mean to say that you've created a logo in Photoshop and can't open it in another program?
Or are you trying to isolate a logo on a photo and copy it to another photo?

I have a comment.  I am very upset with Photoshop and all your tutorials regarding the quick select tool.  I have watched many tutorials and read instructions until I am blue in the face.  This tool does not work.  It is all over the place and all of your tutorials make it look so simple.  How can you advertise this as a viable tool when it just doesn't work?

It is all over the place and all of your tutorials make it look so simple.
This is a user to user Forum, so you are not really addressing Adobe here, even though some Adobe employees thankfully have been dropping by.
How can you advertise this as a viable tool when it just doesn't work?
Concluding something does not work because you fail at using it is not necessarily always justified.
The Quick Selection Tool certainly has limitations, but your post seems to be more about venting than trouble-shooting – otherwise you might have posted an image where you failed to get an expected result.

  • Quick select tool hangs and will not work

All of a sudden the quick select tool will not work/hangs up has a mind of its own and wanders/ after installing an upgrade to Nik software Color Efex Pro 4. I put that in the trash as I could not find a way to unistall. Probably still part of it in other areas?
Still did not work. Then I uninstalled PS 5.5 extended. Reinstalled to find it the same as before. All preference etc the same and a blank cach document show up in Bridge, did this before too. It is like I never uninstalled it.
What gives. How do I get a clean copy of PS?

    You're welcome.

…do you know how to find the installer on a Mac so I can uninstall some of the Nik software…
There is no such thing as a system wide uninstaller on a Mac.  Only a few select applications, like some of Adobe's, install an application-specific Uninstaller, e.g. in the Utilities folder of your root level ./Applications folder.  I have no idea if Nik provides such an uninstaller or not.

  • When working with quick selection tool (and not only) the whole psd file gets damaged.

    Hello there,
Since I first tried Photoshop CS6 on PC I encounter the following problem: when I use quick selection tool at some point the selection gets completely random and I see parts of my artwork disapear. Even after closing the file without saving the changes I see the artwork completely corrupted, without any possibility to recover. As if parts of the image were deleted.
The problem persisted after I changed to Creative Cloud on Mac (I'm running OS X 10.8.5.)
I have just seen that it also happens when I work with regular layer masks.
I desperately need to fix this problem because I cannot keep using hours of retouching work again and again.
    Hope someone can help.
    Cheers
    Julia

I am also having the same exact issue. This is the third time this has happened in about six months. I use the quick selection tool and I see a alpha mask that looks truncated and it show random parts of the image in the mask which has nothing to do with the selection. But the worst part of this is that my retouching layer the only other layer comes back completely empty even if I try to save the file in various other file types like tiff and it comes back empty. I'm losing a lot of retouching time here. I also hope some else has an answer.
    Thanks
    Mike

  • OpenGL seemingly deactivates after use of quick selection tool (PS CS5)

Before using the quick selection tool, I am able to smoothly zoom in and out by holding Ctrl+Space and dragging with the mouse.
If I use the quick selection tool, however, the marching ants line turns into a strange box. I no longer am able to zoom smoothly but instead with the technique above I draw a rectangle which I zoom into. This indicates to me, that OpenGL has been deactivated. I want my smooth zoom back!
I noticed that the preferences always show OpenGL as active, no matter which of the above "state" I'm in. I tried updating my AMD graphics card's driver without success. I found a post describing similar OpenGL problems on the same graphics card and installed the linked driver; the post was 2 years old, but it worked. Re-installing more recent version (Catalyst-Version 12.6) brought the problem back. Newer versions of the driver seem all to suffer from the same problem.
    I'm using
    Windows 7 64-bit,
64-bit Photoshop Extended from CS5 Production Premium,
    AMD Radeon HD 4600 (currrently Catalyst-Version 13.1).
    I tried:
"Downgrading" the driver (only really old version worked, as mentioned above),
reseting Photoshops preferences (Ctrl+Alt+Shift at start),
deactivating OpenGL (reactivating only works after restart and problem reappears) but I miss the smooth zoom.
I hope I could clarify the problem and thank you for reply!

    I seriously can't download version 13.4...
This is my input for the driver search on their homepage (I'm German, that's why some words are German...):
This is the result I get from the above input:
I have not a single clue, how I am supposed to download another version than the current. AMD makes it really difficult for me.
Maybe someone could post a link to another version? That would be really nice!
Also I tried the "Driver Autodetect". Catalyst-Version 13.1 is now installed...
This actually seems to be a thread for the AMD-Support, but maybe someone knows a workaround?

  • Quick selection tool preference

My quick selection tool has reversed it's default position. Normally, when you open this tool, it's natural position is to add and you have to press alt ( on my pc ) to subtract. Mine is default subtract and you have to hit shift to add. Not a huge problem bit it's annoying. I've looked in preferences and can't see what I've done. It was okay until a couple of days ago ! Can anyone help ? I am using CS5 Windows 7.
    Regards,
    TL.

  • Photoshop Crashes after quick selection tool

Did the 14.2 update today and since then i have been unable to use the quick selection tool, followed by quick mask. The PC Crashes.
Photoshop CC has worked perfectly until now
Please help, I am on a deadline for images for an online website, I so wish I had not updated
Image below shows quick mask, the selection was the top right above the frogs eye, but look at the red mask, also Task manager shown(it says Photoshop not responding)
This was the sequence of events if it helps
The Pc was working from a clean reboot.
    I opened Photoshop
Opened an image off the camera
cropped to 1000px wide (72 dpi)
    Quick selection
    Quick mask
This is the result (happened 5 times to date so going for a coffee in the hope someone has a solution soon!)
    Many thanks

I have reproduced it myself on one occasion, though it did not lock Photoshop up for me.  It's been reported to Adobe.
There may be some connection to the zoom level.  Out of curiosity, are you using Scrubby Zoom?
It might be prudent to try configuring Photoshop to use either the "Normal" or "Basic" drawing mode instead of "Advanced", though it is of course a bit difficult to know right away whether the problem has been worked-around.

P.S., you said "The PC crashes"...  Are you speaking of something beyond the Photoshop application locking up as you have shown above?  An application locking up isn't the same as a system crash.

  • Photoshop CS6 - Quick Selection tool freezes Photoshop/ becomes unresponsive for minutes

After only two selections the tool becomes unresponsive for minutes.
I'm on a 2.6 Ghz retina MacBook Pro, 16 Gb RAM, and this in connection with an SSD should make this tool very good to use. Operating system: OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion", latest update.
Unfortunately, it seems to develop some kind of overload, during which you cannot use Photoshop at all. No commands like "undo selection", "quit", "close file" are accepted.
There is no beachball, no other signs that Photoshop is working on something.
Hint: it seems to happen when you option select (subtract from an existing selection).
Hint: the freeze can be shortened by a tool switch (has to be through clicking on a tool, keyboard commands are frozen as well)
Hint: the "subtract selection" move that caused the freeze appears after Photoshop comes back to life after a couple of minutes. The subtraction to the selection seems to be random, makes no sense, and is not the regular function of the tool.
First step after this freeze would be to undo the last selection, and continue working.
If you do several "add to selection" moves, they add up in a kind of waiting line. If you do the subtract from selection move, this doesn't work, and the freeze happens.
So far, I have not noticed the freeze when adding to a selection. Adding to a selection was always quick and instant. The bug must sit in the "subtract from selection" code.
On most freezes, the ants continue walking, I just had one (again with subtracting selection) where even the ants stopped walking.
I don't think it has anything to do with Photoshop working. I have used the quick selection tool regularly under CS5 on my old machine (which was a museum piece), and while I had to wait sometimes, it was never ground to a freeze/halt like the quick selection tool under CS6.

Did this work before, or has it always been this way?  Not a bug or everyone with your system would be complaining.  Have not seen that.
If it has always worked that way a reset of preferences will probably not do anything.
A reset of preferences will reset to factory defaults, so you will have to reset to saved workspace.
Do you have at least 10% free disk space?

  • Why is the "Quick Selection Tool" working so slowly? - Photoshop CC in Windows 7

Every time I try to use the Quick selection tool, it takes a REALLY long time to select. I had CS5 and it was super fast, even with large RAW files. Now with CC, it takes at least 20 minutes to select a person out of a photo.
I already tried "resetting" the tool - that did not work at all.
    Please help!

I mentioned working on my laptop without GPU acceleration, and how much it slowed everything down, but Quick Select was still laggy after the driver updated and GPU acceleration restored.  This is a reasonable laptop with i7, 16Gb and GTX680. Thankfully, I got my main system back yesterday, and Quick select is pretty much instant.
But there shouldn't be that much difference.  The big box has six core running at 4.2Ghz (under load) 32GB and GTX570, so while it is certainly more powerful, the difference in performance in respect to Quick Select is not proportional.   I've just tried reducing cache levels on the big box from the '6' it usually runs at right down to 2, but it still responds instantly even with large files.  I have GPU set to Advanced, and tile size to 128 on both systems.
Another odd thing is that I only have 1GB vRAM with the GTX570, where the GTX680 has 4Gb of faster vRAM.  But maybe Quick select is not a big user of GPU acceleration.
So no real help I am afraid.  I have looked through the GPU FAQ, but nothing helpful there. OK,  I have just found a more detailed article on GPU acceleration, and it mentions a lot of features, but not Quick Select, so it could be that GPU is irrelevant.   The laptop is Windows 8.1 as opposed win 7 for the big box, if that makes a difference.  Can you correlate anything between our systems?  I hate to post this without any suggestions, but I'm stumped.
There are tricks to aid Quick select.
Make a copy of the layer, and apply Curves and/or Levels directly to the layer, and try to increase contrast between the subject and background.  Use this layer to make the selection, then switch back to the normal layer to use the selection.
I don’t know if this will work as I have just thought of it.  Copy the layer, and Free Transform it to a smaller size.  It will be image dependant, but Quick Select is much faster with images below about 1500 pixels wide. Use Quick select on the smaller image layer, and copy the selection to a new layer. FT it back up to size, and it should fit.  This would only be useful if you are going to use Refine Edge right after, and will have obvious limitations.
Make sure you report back if you find a solution.
