This is the upgrade License SKU for upgrading WCS to WCS Location;
WCS-LOC-UPG-K9
Supports deployment of Cisco WCS on a single server only.
For customers upgrading from their existing Cisco WCS base licenses to equivalent Cisco WCS location licenses running Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1 or later.
Available as Cisco WCS location in increments of 50, 100, or 500 lightweight access points.
Customers currently using this license with Cisco WCS Software Release 4.0 are encouraged to upgrade to Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1, but they are not required to do so.
Order the Correct Cisco WCS SKUs
The process to order Cisco WCS SKUs for WCS-STANDARD-K9, WCS-LOC-UPG-K9, WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 and WCS-ENT-K9 is presented below. To request help with ordering, please contact Cisco Customer Service: http://www.cisco.com/go/customerservice.
1. Login to the Cisco Ordering Tool.
2. Enter the family SKU of WCS-STANDARD-K9 or WCS-LOC-UPG-K9 or WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 or WCS-ENT-K9 into "Enter Product" in the Ordering Tool and then press "Enter."
3. The family SKU will display in the ordering area. (Figure 6).
4. Select the "Line" for the family SKU
5. Once you have been taken to the configuration screen, select one of these options from the left side (Figure 7):
For WCS-STANDARD-K9 select one of the sub-SKUs based on the following:
Base: WCS Standard AP Base Option
Location: WCS Standard AP Location Option
For WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 select one of the sub-SKUs based on the following:
Base: WLSE to WCS AP Base Upgrade Option
Location: WLSE to WCS AP Location Upgrade Option

For the WCS-STANDARD-K9 or **WCS-LOC-UPG-K9 SKU families, customers are prompted to order the optional CD (WCS-CD-K9), for a nominal charge, during the ordering process. The WCS-CD-K9 contains one software image of Cisco WCS Software Release 4.1 on a CD for Windows and Linux. This CD is shipped by U.S. mail to the purchaser's address. The optional CD is not available for WCS-WLSE-UPG-K9 because this SKU family already ships in CD format.
6. The right side of the screen will display the licenses available (Figure 7). The price for each SKU is displayed in the Ordering Tool.
7. Each license is orderable in a quantity of one (1) for the quantity blocks specified. To add multiple quantities of license blocks, you must go back to the main screen and order additional family SKUs and then select the sub-SKU option and license quantity block required. Repeat this process as needed, until the correct quantity of license blocks for your sub-SKU have been ordered.

Wireless Location Appliance to Nexus

Hi dear,
I have a question about our wireless location appliance 2700, I want to connect it in dual attachment to our two nexus 2000 as all of other servers/appliance, I didn’t find any doc about this, could someone help me for that, if it’s possible or not and if yes how can I do that.?

There are two kinds of RFID tags: Active tags, which have a battery or other internal power source, and passive tags, which have no power source and work by reflecting the energy from an RFID scanner (basically). At the energy levels and distances used for WiFi location detection, passive tags will not return a detectable signal.

Location Appliance 2700 - is it supported with v7 WCS and WLC?

The compatibility matrix shows no support for a Location Appliance 2700 for any version 7.0.x.x for WCS and WLC. However, I did see a thread here where a v6.0.x.0 had compatibility. v6.0.202.0 is MD. Is it compatible with v7 WCS and WLC?
Can any of the experts please comment? Thank you.

Location Appliance 2700 - Defect Harddisk

Hi everyone,
my customer owns a 2700 Wireless Location Appliance.
The Harddisk of the Appliance is broken and my customer replaced the defect with a new one.
This new Harddisk comes from a local hardware dealer and has no Operating System installed.
Is there something like a Rescue CD for WLSE?? Or any other Desaster Recovery mechanism??
What shall we do to get this appliance back to working condition?

It seems Smartcard used for ID cards have a small RF ID, can I use this for Asset Tagging?

Cisco Wireless NAC Appliance - Design Practices ??

I have a new Cisco WIreless NAC appliance, the purpose of which is to manage the Guest users access to network. I have been searching for some best practices related to the design of this appliance but havent found one.
Can anybody help me in sharing his design experience or any docuement which would be guiding in deciding over the design / placement of this NAC device in network.

there is nothing such as "Wireless Nac appliance".
The question is "do you have the NAC Guest Server" or the "Nac appliance Server and Nac appliance Manager (CAS/CAM)" ?
Because those are just not the same at all.
Then on the wireless side, do you have autonomous APs or a WLC ?
Sorry to ask, but there's just so many possibilities you could be asking that we need to clarify.

Wireless Location Appliance

Hi,
We have a central WCS server. One of our remote offices has purchased the 2710 wireless location appliance and 2 WLC's
Where is the best place to situate the appliance? In the remote site with the WLCs or centrally with WCS?
In addition we have purchased WCS licenses with "location" for all our other AP's. So we would like to utilise their 2710 for other WLAN's at other remote sites. (However, they (the remote site) should be the primary beneficiary). Does this affect the location of the appliance?

I really don't think it matters where the location appliance is. However, since it is WCS that is sending the information to the Location Appliance for processing, it would probably be more logical for the location appliance to be located with the WCS server. I'm sure from a bandwidth perspective, the best option is to keep the two devices in close proximity.
I can't really think of a situation where you would even need to "prioritize" the benefits of the location appliance. Expect from an installation perspective, focusing more on the remote site before adding the others systems.

Location Appliance 2700 Password Recovery

Hi All-
Inherited 2700 Location Appliance, but not the credentials to login. I have attempted the recovery per Cisco document 82161. The actual appliance boot steps don't seem to match the document. I'm pressing 'Esc' to crash out of the boot sequence to no avail. Any ideas?

Wireless Location Appliance Compatibility

Hi
I have a Integrated WLAN Controller interface card in my 2800 series router which is capable of supporting 6 AP's. I want to do location tracking with these 6 AP's. I have my WCS system, but am going to purchase the location appliance as well.
However, i am unable to find anywhere if the location appliance is compatible with my WLAN controller as it is in an ISR, or would i need to purchase a standalone WLAN Controller?

Yes, the appliance is compatible with the whole controller range, modules. You just want to check codes (appliance code vs controller code version) compatibility here:

Wireless Location Appliance + Time and Motion

I'm looking into the feasibility of using a location appliance with wcs location to track time and motion of our warehouse staff. Can someone tell how detailed a report on client location history (movement) can I produce from the system?

Wireless LAN Controller (WLC) vs Wireless Location Appliance (WLA)

Seems to be that both the WLC and WLA can do asset tracking, i.e. track the physical location of a variety of Wi-Fi devices.
I read that the WLA can records historical location information. Can the WLC do so?
What would be the additional use of WLA if WLC can do location tracking? Or does they perform location tracking in different ways?

The WLC does not actually perform the reporting piece of ANY location tracking. You must have at the least WCS Plus. WCS can track any ONE item at the time the request for location was made (polling). The location server on the other hand can track thousands of devices in real time along with historical data. The MSE, which is the better choice to do this with, also has an open API to which you can write applications against the location data gathered from the controllers. So yes, the controller provides the location information to the WCS or MSE which has the location algorithms to locate and report the location of the devices. The MSE is much more robust than its smaller WCS brother. You must use a MSE with Context Aware Software. See the link below about context aware software. It comes in a couple of different flavors. One for tags, one for clients.

WLAN design wireless location appliance

We are planning to implement a wireless network with Cisco LWAP 1240AG AP's with Cisco AIR-ANT4941 antenna.
I understand that you should have AP's around the inside edge of the building spaced between 8-10 metres depending on the survey and then work inward with omni-directionsal antenna like the AIR-ANT4941.
Should the AP's around the edge have directional Antenna's rather than the 4941

Channel 1, 6, and 11 are just about as non-overlapping as 1, 7, and 13. There's an insignificant amount of overlap, so it's just as plausible of a solution, even in Europe. I honestly don't know why you wouldn't use the extra channels to eliminate the minor overlap - every bit helps.
The "channel blanket" or "virtual cell" WLAN design philosophy is rapidly spreading. Cisco maintains that it's a standards violation and I've heard no talk of them purchasing the not-to-be-named company or of them adopting the same design philosophy. I sincerely hope that they do one of the two soon, however, because it's very good design that's difficult for Cisco to compete against.

WLC upgrade to 7.0.98.0, WCS & Location Appliance to upgrade - Building maps location

Hi,
We recently upgraded about 24 WLCs (4402s and 5508s) from 6.x to 7.0.98.0. In order to support these WLCs through WCS, we also need to upgrade the WCS to 7.0.164 which is currently running at 6.0.132.0 (Linux OS). Same is the case with Wireless Location Appliance 2700 to be upgraded as well. Wireless Management system has number of building maps with AP locations.
Prior to upgrade the WCS / Location appliance we need to take the backup of these building maps, already stored to export after the upgrade. Kindly let us know the directory where all these maps are being stored, as during upgrade we will loose all the stored data / maps.

Who says you're going to lose all your maps and stored data during a WCS upgrade? The installer for WCS 7.0.164.0 will see the 6.0.132.0 installation and upgrade it in place, modifying the existing data to work in the new 7.0 format. The installer for WCS 7.0.164.0 will even ask you if you want to make a backup of this data before the upgrade process even starts, although it would be a good idea to pull a backup of everything before you start. (One can never have too many backups, right?) The backup application in your existing install should be at /opt/WCS6.0.132.0/backup . Run that application and it will prompt you for a location to put the .nmsbackup file.
The .nmsbackup file that results from a WCS backup is what gives WCS its portability across platforms (physical/virtual) and operating systems (Windows/Linux). It's essentially the lifeboat of WCS, containing the database, the maps, the licenses and other supporting files.
