Mark a series of In Out Points before capture from DV tape?

When Using Adobe Premier Pro a few years back I seem to remember playing a tape all the way through, marking In/Out points, all the way along the tape, then going back to the beginning click Batch Capture ( or similar) and the machine would rewind the tape and run through again capturing just the relevant clips.
Can I do this in FCE?
I see I can do an individual clip, or the whole tape, but cant seem to find if I can do a batch capture?
If not, is it possible to set FCE to split the capture automatically after each scene , detect where the Record/stop button has been pressed when the film was taken and split there?
Sorry cant tell you what version at the moment, a capture is in progress. But I bought it about one month ago.

Oh, yes, it was, the fatal error was naming a user 'Home'
That combined with doing a restore from a TM backup that did not backup anything in a folder named Home...so no user data backed up. It is in the TM auto exclude list.
When I rebooted, it would not allow me to log in under any name, as no user existed anymore. Eventually loged back in from terminal/Single user mode, can t remember now. Finally got back in but dock icons all gone, replaced by big question marks, had to run everything from terminal window..
What I am getting at is that I had been lead to believe that this OS was so solid, and to quote one of my friends ' you cant do anything wrong...it wont let you' I had wanted to believe this though I did doubt it. I use a varity of systems, FreeBSD/FreeNAs server or three, Ubuntu variants etc.
So despite what it may sound like, I am not knocking it, and am quite prepared for differences, more dissapointed that it has not lived up to the hype I have been fed by all my mates all these years, and feeling foolishg for believing them. It does not seem any quicker/slower or more or less stable than a well setup and maintained Windows install. Apps certainly freeze as often as Windows apps....but that probably can be laid at the door of the third party developers....Admitedly, it probably takes more work to keep a Windows machine running at top performance, far more daily/weekly chores/cleanups etc to do to keep it 'clean'

  • Out of sync in/out points when exporting from FCP

When I import a sequence from FCP6 as both an XML and straight into using Send to, a lot of the clips in my timeline contain incorrect in/out points.
On some clips it is a completely different shot altogether although the durations are correct.
I have read the release notes about issues with importing sequences and the boxes are checked this end.
Has anyone been experiencing these problems too? If it helps, this only seems to be on sequences shot on the Panasonic HVX200 at: 720p25
    I would appreciate any help!

Has anyone discovered the source of this problem? I just ran into this today. This is a VERY serious problem in my opinion. The whole benefit of Color (from my point of view) is to allow high end color correction without having to re-export your clips into an external app, adding another layer of degradation to your clips, or having to deal with huge uncompressed files. This bug makes that workflow useless so I sincerely hope this is fixable.

  • Stopping Audio Recording before out point crashes?

Using cs5.5 and running everything out and in through a Matrox MX02 LE with MAX
Playing out video and audio from Premiere's Matrox timeline through the matrox box and to an audio booth through hd SDI. audio is coming back through embedded HD SDI through the matrox and into the pc and audio only is being recorded.
If I set an In and Out point and record from one to the other fully the recording will be fine, everything works and I can playback with the recorded tracks under the previously edited footage.
The problem is if the talent messes up and I have to stop mid record and go back the audio is saved and I can save the project but I cannot play anything and when i try to do anything premiere locks up and crashes.
When i restart the program everything is there again and i can resume recording.
This however is a giant pain and not something that should be happening.
I'm wondering if adobe just assumed that all recording would go from in to out and when it hits the out point there is a command prompt that shuts everything down properly but when you stop it manually it just cuts and the program doesnt know quite what happened. Since I can record from the in to out point properly I can't gather any other reason why.
Anyone else run into this problem?

    Huh.
Well...I've found Soundbooth far easier to use for this purpose.  Maybe try that or Audition, whichever you have.

  • Compressor 4 command line -in and -out points

I'm trying to use Compressor 4.1 command line interface to compress various video clips. While I can compress an entire file, start to end, without issue, I can't figure out how to compress a subset of the source file by setting in and out points. The -help information states I can set -in <hh:mm:ss;ff> and -out <hh:mm:ss;ff> parameters except they seem to have no effect as Compressor compresses the full file. Has anyone been able to specify -in and -out parameters successfully? If so, can you please share the appropriate syntax?
FWIW: here is the sytax for command that I've been using to compress 2 seconds of source video:
    /applications/Compressor.app/Contents/MacOS/compressor -batchname sampleBatch  -jobpath /Shows/filename_HD.mov -settingpath /Settings/480pProxy.cmprstng  -locationpath /Clips/clipName_HD.mov -in 00:00:04;00  -out 00:00:06;00
    OSX 10.9.2, Compressor 4.1 and Compressor 4.1.1

You have to use quotation marks around the in an out points because of the semi colon.
/Applications/Compressor.app/Contents/MacOS/Compressor -batchname "In and Out Example"  -jobpath /Shows/filename_HD.mov -settingpath /Settings/480pProxy.cmprstng  -locationpath /Clips/clipName_HD.mov -in "00:00:04;00"  -out "00:00:06;00"

  • Prelude CC 2014 (3.1.0) - No In/Out point on Ingest?

Just installed the latest version of Prelude CC 2014 (3.1.0) this morning and I'm trying to set simple In/Out points before I ingest some footage, but "I" and "O" don't seem to be responding. Am I missing something here?

    Hi -
Be sure to click on the thumbnail such that you see the play back bar appear (has the play head visible in the bar at the foot of the thumbnail). Now you can drag-drop the playhead and use I/O keys to set your IN and OUT Points - or you can use JKL shortcuts to move the playhead.
Be sure to enable transcode to turn your IN-OUT regions into new assets which will appear in the Project Panel.
New for Prelude 3.1 you can now use this same method for thumbnails in the Project panel. You can set an IN-OUT range and append it directly into an open rough cut by simply hitting the 'A' key (for Append).
Hope this helps and thanks for downloading the new version!

  • Capture not ending on out point

I logged a clip with an in and out point. When the capture reaches the end it passes the out point and reaches the end of the tape, which voids the entire capture. Why is FCP all the sudden passing my out point during capture?

When's the last time you had the camera cleaned? Could be that it's got some dirt on the playback head where the TC is getting read, and just doesn't know when to stop...?

  • Why am I not able to mark "in" and "out" points in Final Cut Pro 6?

I have a bunch of old tapes that I am trying to put on my computer.  I have Final Cut Pro 6 and everything hooks up nicely except I am not able to mark in and out points or use capture now.  Does anyone out there know why that would be the case?
I appreciate any help I can get.

What VTR? How is it controlled?
What are your capture settings? Firewire Protocol?

  • Marking an in or out point in the event browser changes the selected clip

I'm getting quite infuriated with this issue at the moment. I'm not sure if it's a bug, or I'm doing something wrong.
I've created collections of subclips by tagging ranges with keywords in the event browser. I'm now trying to edit these onto the timeline. I find the clip I want in the browser and use JKL and IO to mark the in and out point of the actual part of the clip I'm going to use. The problem I'm having is that sometimes - not all the time - pressing I or O changes the selected clip in the event browser.
    Any ideas what's going on?
Many thanks in advance for any help you're able to offer.

Changes how? Post screen shots of what you're seeing and what you expect to see.

  • Set Marker Duration (In/Out Points of Marker) Keyboard Shortcut

Is there a keyboard shortcut for setting the In and Out point of a Marker?
I am editing interviews and would like to use Marker Ranges to indicate responses/topics.
So, I would like to have a keyboard shortcut as easy as "I" or "O" to set the In and Out point of a Marker Range.
The only option that I can see is to pull up the Edit Marker Box and manually adjust Duration.
This won't work because I want to set this Marker Range on the fly as I watch the clip.

That would be a nice feature.

  • Deleting Mark In, Out Points

How can I delete Mark In and Mark Out points that are no longer needed or were otherwise applied in error?
    Thanks....

Sounds like you figured it out, not sure? Anyway:
In/Out points can be entered in different places, one method for deleting is right (Control) clicking in between the in/out points and choosing a short cut menu option.

  • Mark in and out point on non-primary storyline

Ok - I must be missing something... How do I mark and in and out point in a non-primary storyline?
Say, I want to replace part of a non-primary storyline with gap... The only way I've seen to do that would be to blade the clip in the non-primary storyline into three parts and 'delete' the middle bit out, which is what marking an 'in' and 'out' and pressing 'delete' is the accelerated way of doing it in the primary storyline.

    Yes I know.
The thing with markers (M) is that these are always placed on the primary storyline, except if you selected a clip in the non-primary storyline. So I don't know why you must first select the Range Selection tool to make in's and out's. Why don't it works just as the markers do.

  • No mark in and out points at batch capturing

I have created logged clips to my browser window but, noticed that the IN and OUT points say NOT SET.
    Is this normal?
As I create the logged clips for batch capture shouldnt I see the IN and OUT times?

That's normal. When you set In and Out in the Log & Capture window, those points become Media Start and Media End in the Browser. And In and Out are left as Not Set.
The rationale is that once you've captured, you'll review your clips and place In and Out points more precisely. In case you do want to stick with Media Start and Media End as your In and Out, simply load the clip into the viewer and press X on your keyboard - that will set your In and Out (at Media Start & End) for your clip.
Now - you know there had to be one caveat - the only time this is not the case is when you check the box to Add Handles in the Batch Capture dialog. In that case, when FCP captures the clips, it extends the Media Start and Media End by the handle amount and uses the In and Out that you specified during logging as the In & Out for that clip in the Browser.

  • Freeze up during clip capture with random change of in and out points

Having BIG problems capturing DV footage which began late last Fall. While performing a capture (assigned clips) footage would go down for a few seconds then would freeze (picture only, the audio continued) then after several seconds the picture would "catch up" and continue.
Found a solution here in the FCP forum where I had my firewire drives "ignored" by SPOTLIGHT by listing them in the privacy selection. Worked and moved on.
I have a project now where the problem has come up again. Once again during a clip capture it did what it did before - but now it ignores the assigned in point (audio but no video and almost consistently delaying it by 9 seconds into the capture) then freezes (at the assigned outpoint - sometimes) then continues to play on (audio only) then resumes (again catching up) then stops announcing a SUCCESSFUL CAPTURE. When the clip is selected to preview it plays back from the incorrect in point, freezes, then plays until the catch up - with now the audio out of sync. More craziness because now the log information now has changed: the MEDIA START & END information is not what was inputed so the DURATION TIME is now different and sometimes it adds a MARK OUT point (!?). I rarely use the CAPTURE NOW function but even trying that the footage still freezes up and goes out of sync.
I worked the SPOTLIGHT routine again with no change. Have completely optimized my system drive and external hard drives using DISKWARRIOR 4.1
I accept all the auto software up dates that come through UPDATER and see that I received a updated Quicktime version 7.5 on 13 June 08. I also noticed that I don't have CLASSIC OS 9 supported and seemed to have read here about something about FIREWIRE DRIVERS that maybe missing?
Was thinking of upgrading to 10.5 to see if that helps - but unsure about my FCP version/compatability...
So, here I sit frustrated since I have used FCP (which I LOVE) for quite a few years with great success - this is crazy! OF course, I have a project which deadline is looming!
    Any ideas?
    Much appreciation..
    Here's my computer stats:
    G4 Powerbook
    OS 10.4.11
    FCP 5.0.4
    QT 7.5
    Sony DSR-11 recorder/player
4-Firewire Drives with 20gigs of space available

So far have done a workaround to digitize my DV elements through iMovie. Not pretty. I string together the selected/import clips (in this case from interviews), assemble them in sequential order on the time line with small breaks of black in between, then export the timeline as DVCPRO/DV-NTSC quicktime file. Take that file into my FCP then segment out the clips on the time line, make each segment an independent clip so that I can name them. Not pretty but it works - miss having the logging data going through FCP log and capture.
Still waiting for any other solution to my situation - thanks!

  • Sliding audio IN/OUT point in smaller increments than a single frame.

    Hello there...
I saw this work-flow on the forum a while ago, and i've searched the archives but can't remember what the original thread was about/titled...
I am having to cut a lengthy interview down, removing 'ummm's and generally cutting out individual words... you know the score...
I have one word I really can't get a clean cut on. The playhead rests just before or just after the moment the next word comes in... there IS a tiny gap on the audio waveform... i just can't get the playhead on it...
The solution i saw here by the one-and-only Shane Ross involved double-clicking to send it to viewer, then holding down <shift> and sliding the... the what? the playhead? the OUT point marker...
I've been fiddling for a while now, and can't get it right... grrr!
Shane (or anyone else!)... can you advise me?

but i don;t think you want to really slip the audio unless it is truly out of sync with the video ... in your case you probably just want to zoom right in on the timeline and edit the audio level to mute as required. audio keyframes can be placed and edited at up to 1/100th frame intervals

  • New problem/bug when I set in and out points on a clip. Unwanted automatic zoom in on clip timeline.

Playing clips to log and set in and out points for scenes I will use later.  Something changed with the new update and I think it is a bug.  When I hit the I and O keys to set in and out points on a clip before dragging to the sequence, it zooms in on the clip timeline.  I cannot see the full clip time line unless I zoom out which is a pain to do time and time again.  How do I get it back to the way it was before?  It did not used to zoom in and out, it just marked your in and out point as it played leaving the clip timeline unchanged.
I am using windows 7 with Premiere Pro CC

    Hi,
Thanks for your post. I think you are using Premiere pro CS6 as the Project option is included in the file menu and in the video there is an option of project available and visible. Please update your CS6 with the latest 6.0.5 update and the issue will be fixed. The link is provided below. Please update once issue is fixed.
