Marker Import Weirdness iMovie to DVDSP

Hi,
For Some Strange Reason, when I drag an imported video asset created with iMovie 3.0.3 that contains markers into a blank chapter index menu in DVDSP 3, the first scene always gets named "Start". I did not name this first marker "Start" in iMovie, yet DVDSP insists on renaming it. The marker is at the very beginning of the iMovie video. All other markers are correctly named. I know I can rename the scenes/markers, but this is irritating.

Ok, now I know why. From the manual:
DVD Studio Pro automatically adds the first marker to all tracks. It is named “Start” when the track is created by dragging a video asset to the Menu Editor. (When the asset is dragged to the Track Editor, the name is based on the marker naming settings in the Track pane of DVD Studio Pro Preferences.) When you create a chapter index menu, the first button linked to a marker is linked to the “Start” marker set by DVD Studio Pro. Since this marker is at the start of the track, pressing this button plays the track from its beginning. If the marker names appear on your chapter index menu’s buttons, you may want to edit this button’s text to better describe its function.

  • Saving files from Photoshop to Import into iMovie 09

    1. What is the best file format for saving images from Photoshop to bring into iMovie 09?
    2. What should the image size of the file be set to from Photoshop? I would like the best quality while working in iMovie prior to exporting and compressing after I am done editing.
    Thank you in advance.

I see you have not marked your topic "Answered", so you may be hoping for some other suggestions. If your item 1 is intended to ask about file "type" (.psd, .jpg, .png, .tif, etc.), here is my suggestion.
Because of the large file size of PhotoShop (PS) .psd image files, *unless you need to keep the PS version with Layers, Adjustments, etc*., _and unless you do NOT keep a separate folder of PS images_, I suggest that you NOT save the PS .psd file "format" (type) into iPhoto (or iMovie.)
I keep all PS (.psd) image files that I want to retain in separate folders outside iPhoto. I also save the finished (PS) image as a .jpg or .png version which I import into iPhoto for easy import into iMovie via the media browser. Whether to use jpeg or png depends on the image quality I need.
If you are capturing the snapshots that you are editing with PS from an iSight, other webcam, or a Flip camcorder, the jpg version will probably give you all the quality you need. However, to make your decision easier, you can save multiple file type (and compression settings) versions of the edited file when you are finished in PS. Then import all the various jpgs, pngs, tiffs, etc, into a test movie, lable (title) them for easy identification, save the movie, and see if you can tell any difference in quality or each image when you replay your test movie. If you can tell a difference, you can decide how much quality you need and match that need with the file type and size that gives the necessary quality level. If you cannot see a difference in the move regardless of which file type or compression level, you can save space by using the smallest image file.
+re: your item 2:+ I have nothing to add to Karsten's expert comments on resolution and file size.

  • Canon EOS 5D Mark II and iMovie 11

    I cannot find an answer.
I tried to import a few raw videos directly from my Mark II into iMovie. I used the drag and drop method but it didn´t work.
I have read different things about the issue: they are not compatible, they DO are compatible.
    So my question is simple.
Can I edit my 5D Mark II videos using iMovie?
    If yes, how?
Many Many thx for your help.

    Hi
I can not do so from my Leica or Nikon either.
I do - Import Photos and Videos into iPhoto
When opening iMovie I find Videos from iPhoto top in Event's window and Photos from the Photo button in Media tools down to the right.

  • Importing to iMovie: How do I use an external usb mic when recording with the built-in FaceTime HD Camera?

    Hello all
I'm scheduled to work with a friend this week; I'm going to help him make a simple audition DVD.  I promised him I had the necessary equipment and such.
I was importing from the webcam using iMovie.  If I can't use my external mic to record for the video, there is more involved in the editing process.   I was hoping to record the video and audio into one package.  I'm using the built-in FaceTime webcam on my macbook pro and a ZoomH1 on usb.
I've tried changing the audio in system preferences: input to H1.  This works when recording with audacity or anything else.  I even changed the input on FaceTime to H1.  There aren't any preferences I can find in iMovie to change the input for importing video directly from the webcam.
How do I change the audio input for direct import on iMovie?
    OR
Is there something else I can do to have HD video and HQ audio captured in one video file on my macbook pro?
I suppose I can record the video and audio separately but that is usually much more involved.  This is why I got this usb microphone lol.
    Thanks in advance,
    -Seth

I just found using QuickTime Player to record a movie works great.  I can easily change the audio input.  iMovie is silly. lol
If I missed anything let me know.
    Thanks

  • Importing from iMovie to FCP -- Timeline

I've been using iMovie and am about to upgrade to FCP. If I import an iMovie project file into FCP, does it import the clips and the timeline/editorial layout? In other words, will I be able to see my layout/edits in the FCP timeline, or will FCP only import the actual clip files into the browser, and then I have to manually reorder everything?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)

    1) If I wanted to give it a try and pull my iMovie into FCP, will the timeline also import?
    2) If I follow your advice and convert the clips to .mov files...I have one more question: Say I captured a 1 minute clip from my video camera into iMovie. I then trimmed and slipt that clip into a 30 second segment. Is there anyway to access JUST that 30 second segment/new clip and convert to .mov? I can only seem to locate the original 1 minute dv file I imported.
    Thanks!

  • Importing from iMovie HD

Can anyone help me? I created a 4GB project in iMovie HD and saved it to my Movies folder. I then opened iMovie 08 and asked it to import an iMovie HD project, and selected the one I'd just saved. It imported only the first couple of frames, that's all. Tried it a couple of times, same result. What am I missing here?

If in iMovie 06 have a project with 20 clip in iMovie 08 found less clips but everyone is complete. Entire clips are missing.
    1) If you are counting "rendered" clips in the "Project.PKG > Media folder," they are not included in the import. You will have o move them manually if you want them.
    2) If you are counting clips included in the source bin, then I don't know if they are supposed to import or not. (I.e., I don't use the built-in HD import option in iMovie '08.) You can check and see if these are your missing clips. if they are, then add them to the HD project before import and see if they are imported to iMovie '08. If they aren't, then you may need to send a feedback to Apple regarding this issue.
And the order in which are imported is not the same as in the original project
Editing and rendering in an iMovie HD project will change the clip names which, in turn, may re-order the files as the finder "sees" them. (I.e., they are ordered alphabetically in the project media folder.) So, if they are imported in alphabetical order, they would be out of their original "source" or timeline order.

  • Importing from iMovie 09

I have iMovie 09 and I just bought Final Cut Express. I created a simple movie in iMovie 09. I exported it as Final Cut XML. I imported the file in Final Cut Express. All as described in the Final Cut Express video tutorial.
However, I just get a "Media Offline" message... the import doesn't seem to work. I have tried this multiple times.
I have tried reconnecting the files, but it doesn't seem to let me select the right file...
Very confused... Is there anything I can do to get this working? (Preferably without having to attempt to reconnect the files)
    Thanks!

    Thanks Tom.
In the video tutorial it appears as if you do not need to reconnect the files. I assumed that this would only be necessary if the files had been moved, but I didn't move them. I thought that the XML files would include directions to where the video clips are stored. Do you have to manually point to the files every time that you import from iMovie?
My iMovie project is a screen recording. It consists of several .mov files. I have tried removing all the titles / fades / transitions but it still cannot see the video clips when I import them to FCE.
The movie's about 8 minutes long. It's in widescreen. I haven't changed any settings.

I bought a new iMac and i'm importing in iMovie 08 a project from iMovie06.

  • Importing from iMovie to FC Express

I have attepted to import AVCHD files from my Canon XA20 Camcorder to FC Express with no success. I then attepted to import the same files into iMovie with success.
    I have 2 questions.
    1. How can I import AVCHD files direct int FC Express.
    2. To import from iMovie to FC Express I cannot find where iMovie video file are on the system. In FCE you can nominate a drive for the files to be put.

    That is PAL 25 fps?
The data rate should be fine.
AVCHD is possible to ingest directly to FCE.
Make sure you set the comatching Easy Setup BEFORE trying to capture.
Use Log and transfer over USB cable.

  • Importing from iMovie 06, lose capture dates

When I import old iMovie 06 movies, the capture dates gets lost. Here is one of the original clips in iMovie 06:
However, after importing in iMovie 11, the capture dates are lost.  I tried many variations, like import the iMovie 06 project, or cd to the *.iMovieProject directory and import the actual clips, etc.
Now, good iMovie11 clips have the capture date imbedded in the file name (as in clip-2010-03-14 hh;mm;ss.dv).  However, the ones imported from iMovie 06 end up in iMovie 11 with simple names such as clip55.dv.  So it's not surprising I cannot see the capture dates in iMovie 11.
So I looked inside the *.iMovieProject directory hoping to find the capture dates either in the file name or in a plist, but I couldn't (nothing in the plists below)
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Thumbnails.plist
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Timeline Movie Data.plist
    ... Jan 23  2010 Cache/Timeline Movie.mov
    ... Nov  8  2009 Media/Clip55.dv
    etc
Finally, I opened Clip55.dv in QuickTime and looked at MovieInspector, but I could not see any capture date (similar to exif in jpegs).
So obviously I missed them. My question is where in the iMovie 06 project can I find them?   If accessible, I can write a script to fix the clips imported in iMovie11 by changing their names. I tried it manually, and it worked.
    Thanks in advance

    Hi - Couple of things.
Click on the offending clip that you imported from iMovie in your FCP Bin and type Command + 9 to see the item properties. Either report those item properties, or if easier, take a screen shot of the item properties and post that.
Then click any where on the timeline you are having trouble with and type Command + 0 (Zero) to see the sequence settings. Either report those settings or take a screen shot of the Sequence Settings window and post that.
In order for FCP to use the video without rendering, both the items properties of the source clip, and the sequence settings must match - and both must be within standard production parameters.
Also, you can click on the source clip in the FCP Bin, then control-click on the clip and select Reveal in Finder from the drop down menu. Once that file is revealed, open it in Quicktime 7 and see if if plays correctly there.
    Hope this helps.

  • Older DV Tapes Will Not Play or Import Into iMovie

I have a lot of DV tapes shot ten years ago on a JVC camcorder that I want to import into iMovie.
I have a new Canon Vixia hv 30 and I'm assuming these older mini DV tapes are compatible because these old tapes play fine in the camcorder itself, and also on my TV, but when I try to import them into iMovie, they do not display in the iMovie import window. However, new tapes shot recently with the new hv 30 display and import just fine.
Is there a problem with the old tapes being incompatible in some way I'm not understanding?
    Dino1956 answered a similar problem in 2008:
    *iMovie Camcorder Import Fix*
*Connect your camera. put it in 'play' mode (sometimes also called vcr). start up imovie (hd or 08; both work, but i use HD). go to the blue 'import' screen. it should just say 'camera connected'.*
*Now comes the trick. don't click import, but instead put your camera in 'record' mode. you should now see whatever it is that your aiming the camera at on your computer screen.*
*QUICKLY put your camera back in play mode. again very quickly press the 'play' button, either on the imovie import screen or on your camera. your DV tape will start to play back.*
*-On my computer, the video now suddenly shows up in imovie! You can now click the 'import' button in imovie, and imovie will start importing the tape in realtime. This is a bit slower than the normal import method, but hey, at least you can now get your video into imovie!*
...but this solution doesn't work for me. I cannot "quickly" click the Play button on the camera monitor or in the iMovie window after switching from record to Play on the camera because there is a 5 second time lag on both the camera's monitor and in the iMovie window while the iMovie screen/camera monitor switches over from Record to Play.
Is there any way I can get older DV footage into iMovie from my Vixia hv 30? My resources are at a very low ebb right now.

I found a clue on the www.hv20 website: Old DV tapes recorded before HDV...you need to go into the hv 30 menu and select "DV" rather than "HDV", then the video shows up in the iMovie import screen and imports easily.

  • How do i import my iMovie event library to FCPX when the iMovie library is NOT in the home folder.

    my situation:
my MBP is running two drives:  a 160gb SSD that has my home folder, OS and all apps, and a 500gb HDD for data and non-essential software.
the HDD used to be my OS and home folder, so I used to run iMovie off it.  but after installing the SSD, i am now running Lion off it, and it is now my new home folder.
so my iMovie events are now marooned on my ex-home folder, on what is now my HDD data drive.
I can import iMovie events no problem, as FCPX prompts for where the project files are.  but FCPX doesn't prompt for the location of the iMovie events library, so how do i get those old iMovie events in?
i suppose i could copy all the events over to my SSD, then do the import, and then delete them.  but that would take up a lot of space, and id rather not be copying and deleting so much data on the SSD.
    is there any other way?

It is definitely to your advantage to use the FCP command to Import your iMovie Events all at once. The reason is you will not double up on space. FCP will create a hard lingk to your events so you can access them in FCP without altering the iMovie Event in any way, but without doubling the space.
So there are several ways you could approach this.
    1) If you are not using iMovie anymore, you could simply move them to the iMovie Event folder at the top level of either your old drive, or any attached drive that is formatted correctly (Mac OS Extended (journaled). This would likely break any iMovie Projects that you currently have, so it is not recommended if you will continue to use iMovie.
    2) If iMovie is still working, you can use iMovie to move the Events to a proper drive. Click VIEW/EVENTS BY DISK in iMovie, and Command-Drag in iMovie to Movie Events to the drive you want while maintaining your project links. This option is probably only available to you if you have set up your old drive as your official Home directory.
    3) As long as you set your "old" drive to be your Home Folder in OSX, you can just leave them where they are. OSX lets you have the Home folder on a different drive than your startup drive. This is not ususally recommended, but it is useful when you have an SSD. When I got my current Mac with an SSD, I moved my home folder to the internal hard drive but OSX and my Apps are on the SSD.
To do this, I followed the advice of longtime poster Pondini, who has a great website that walks you through this.
    Here is a link.

  • No capture...no import from imovie hd

I've just installed FCE HD. Since the add on apple.com said it worked with most of the recent camecorders, I did'nt checked the "official" qualified list .
Of course, my SONY DCR-PC330E pal is not listed though rather recent and it seems that only a few out of the numerous SONY models are in fact on this list . So, FCE doesn't recognize it .
Anyway, I still have iMovie HD - and my camera works perfectly with it - and I tried to import some iMovie projects in FCE .
It does'nt work either : each time I get an error message, st like "this file can't be opened ".
So, up to now, the only files I can import are pictures files .
And by the way, is there a possibility in FCE to animate these pictures like with the K.B. effect of iMovie ?
thanks for all help to come...!
    iMac g5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Maybe I lied. Does this camera actually record in DV?
    http://www.ciao.co.uk/Productinformation/SonyHandycam_DCR_PC330E_5601033
This seems to show the camera as a stills camera with MPEG-1 video recording. Unless it's actually shooting in the DV format you will not be able to capture the material or bring it into FCE.

  • S-L-O-W importing into iMovie 3

I am trying to import a 1.5GB Quicktime video file into iMovie 3 for editing and ultimate online posting. When I start to import it iMovie tells me the import will take 550 minutes (more than 9 hours!). This happens whether I try to import directly from the disc containing the file or copy it first to my hard drive and then start to import. (Also, first time I tried this my computer froze up a few minutes into the import and I had to bail. Sleep is set on "never;" display was set to go to sleep after 15 mins but that shouldn't affect import, correct?) Should this import really take this long? Is there something else I need to do?
    Machine is Powerbook G4 550MHz 256MB RAM OS 10.3.9.

Should this import really take this long?
That depends on the running time of the movie, the codec used in your movie, the speed of the hard drive and the speed of your computer. All I know is the speed of your compouter, which is slow by today's standards.
The display sleep won't affect anything.
Just let it run over night and make sure you have plenty of free hard drive space.
