Market position of XE versus PE?

Hi,
I would like to know, where does Oracle position XE related to Personal Edition?
Up to now, Personal Oracle was a good mobil (laptop) database in my eyes. From now on, it's a database edition I do not know where to put? For a mobil (Windows or Linux based) application it knows to much, and it costs money, compared to XE which is free.
The only real disadvantage and missing option for me is locator, but should Oracle decide to bundle it with XE, then I think PE will simply disappear.
Or am I missing something?

The following is a general comment, and does not imply anything about your situation:
One confusion I've seen over time is that a lot of people think 'Single User' or 'Named User' means only one userid in the database.
Personal Edition is licensed to be used by only one person, not just a bunch of users who happen to connect (perhaps one at a time) with the same username. This is often misunderstood.
It is great in my case (one man company) or in the case of developers who need full features and who need metalink access.

We have both Analyzer and Intelligence as well as Essbase. We are in the process of defining standards as to when each tool or combination of tools would be utilized as a solution. The tools overlap a bit, so I am seeking assistance. Please help!!

I was just reading Analyzer 7.0 Administrator's Guide which has a pretty detailed description of what is needed to be done for Analyzer. It also references the common file used in the setup, so I expect that there is similar documentation in the current release of Essbase.I've been looking forward to implementing this for a number of years as Hyperion has moved slowly. Now it looks like this fall, I'll be able to use external authentication for Essbase and Analyzer.

XE and Personal Edition

Since we now have the free XE, does that mean the personal edition is going away?

Oracle's XDK positioning vs. xalan/xerces in OC4J

How is Oracle going to position its XDK versus the XML Parser/XSLT Stylesheet processor (Xerces/Xalan) components in OC4J? Are they interoperable?

Over time, the Xalan/Xerces will be replaces in OC4J by Oracle XML Components via the JAXP 1.1 support which makes XML Parsers and XSLT processors in Java pluggable.
The Oracle SOAP implementation that comes with IAS 1.0.2.2 already has swapped out Xerces with Oracle XML Parser using Oracle XML Parser's JAXP 1.0 support.

Is IP dead now?

Hi IP-friends,
I just read the latest SAP statement with regards to positioning SAP BPC versus IP, and it really sounds as if they want to sell BPC as the main planning solution, with IP being relevant only in minor exceptions. That's also what came out of the last TechEds.
I would be curious to read your personal opinions and experiences in the market to this question. My personal impression is that there is still some main insecurity in the market of planning applications. I also would see IP and BPC as two separate solutions that could really work in parallel. How do you guys personally see it?

If we read the below pdf we can understand the customer segment of BPC. Addressing the requirements of 2000-5000 users across industry verticals is a definite plus. I feel we should not be product specific. We should learn both SAP and Oracle products and prepare ourselves for future. We cannot control market dynamics. Best ones will be adopted and bad ones will be dropped.

100% reduction in standby power for DVR, etc. Who do I contact?

Our company is CSI Assoc. (we perform direct certification assistance and product homologation type approvals for electronics and telecommunications products). One of our strategic business partners has invented a circuit chip. It will eliminate the standby power consumption in all electronics equipment. Please note - NOT REDUCE standby power but ELIMINATE standby power. This will work on all electronics that have vampire or standby power. TV, DVR, DVD, microwave ovens, X-box, etc. Also chargers of all kinds for power tools, personal hygiene products, cell phones, etc.
The Environmental Protection Agency plans to strengthen its Energy Star standards by 2013. Some of today's boxes have obtained the Energy Star seal and do not possess standby or sleep modes. But according to Noah Horowitz, senior scientist at the natural resources council, many of these boxes have an on/off button that just dims the clock and doesn't significantly decrease power use. Also, he noted that cable boxes are not designed to be turned on and off entirely, but adjusting the software over a cable could greatly improve energy efficiency.
As of September 1, average electricity consumption of Energy Star qualified products are to drop to 97 kilowatt hours a year from about 138, and by the middle of 2013, they must decrease to 29 kilowatt hours per year. Cisco says it plans to offer new box models this year that will comply with the new regulations by cutting energy consumption by 25 percent. It will do this by adding a standby mode, but not a sleep mode.
To combat the problem of phantom load consumption (aka standby power), the engineers have invented a unique power circuit which uses zero standby power. We are currently in the initial process of designing the circuit into chip form and for a limited time we are strategically seeking a select handful of companies interested in providing test verification assistance.
I am not sure who at Cisco, or other companies if you have contacts, that I should contact to see if they are interested is working with us on this trial program. Our business partners stated any participant would be in an advanced market position with a contractual period of exclusivity.
As you know the hardest part of this process is figuring our who to contact. Any assitance you could offer would be appreciated.

Creating a .pdf that someone can sign digitally

Where I work we FAX out hundreds of drawings per year for customers to sign. These are 8.5" x 11" documents usually between one and five pages. Is there anyway to create a .pdf that that has some kind of signature line or signature button that the customer can click to indicate approval of the drawing? This would alleviate the need for both the original FAX and for the customer's return FAX. I know how to create the .pdf but don't know how to put in a signature option.
We are using Adobe CS3. We also have Adobe Acrobat 9 and LiveCycle Designer ES2.

With Acrobat 8 (Pro or 3D) or Acrobat 9 (Standard, Pro, Pro Extended) you can "Reader enable" a PDF.
One thing this provides is that users of Adobe Reader (back to, I think, Reader 7.(something)) can use the Comments & Markup tools.
So, you send me this PDF of a drawing. It is "Reader enabled".
I use Adobe Reader (knowing "good tools" is "good business", I'm using Reader 9 - fully updated <g>).
I open the PDF. I add a "Sticky Note", maybe add some text, and use the Options drop-down to go to Set Status > Review > Accepted.
Maybe I get fancy and go into the Sticky Note Properties to change the "appearance" from the default "Comments" to one of the other icons available.
You get the annotated PDFs back. Perhaps an individual PDF has more than one annotation.
Open the Comments List. Looking over the Tool bar for this you will see that you can show/hide/sort and output PDF reports.
Of course, a small learning curve is involved.
Pay off is that the turnips go to market via a truck versus a horse drawn cart (fax). 8^)

Line Art Conversions

Does anyone have a PS3 tutorial for converting product images to line art? I'm trying to create close-up views of small products (glass vials, screws etc.) for a few different brochures my client wants to create.

I am a Freehand user from 1993 until 2003 when I switched from PC to Mac for my own machine. Macromedia never offered a crossgrade price and I never bought FGS for the Mac. I've grudgingly used Illustrator since 1995--most of the places I've worked have been Illustrator shops. I garnered a good deal of experience with Illustrator over that time and hated it the whole time, but pretty much had no choice after the Macromedia buyout. Since then I have little justification for investing money in Freehand MX and none for convincing employers and clients to switch over to a "dead" application. So I've now been using Illustrator and cursing at it for a couple years
So keep that in mind when I say this: CS4 is the first version of Illustrator that I'm actually happy to move to. If there were a future for Freehand, I very well might still be moving to Illustrator now. From my perspective, CS4 is where Illustrator moved from behind Freehand in every way except market position to being ahead of Freehand.
Or I could have said this more concisely as Freehand fan says: Illustrator CS3, Boo. Illustrator CS4 Yay!.

Creating a Price in 1 table, determined by data contained in multiple other tables.

I'm trying to construct a quote tool for my resellers and partners. My software product has a different selling price determined by the licence type, licence size and some vertical market positioning.
In my example, if my partner ticks the box for "Annual Subscription" and "1 Year", I'd like "Licence Cost" in the table below to present the 1 Year Licnce Price from the table on the top right.
And if they choose "Lifetime Licence" then it should lookup the licence cost under the LifeTime table on the bottom right.
I've tried using IF and LookUp but got tied up in all sorts of mess when trying to nest multiple functions referencing multiple tables, any help you can offer is gratefully received.

Thanks for your explanation.
So the logic / workflow is as follows:
Partner should tick the boxes that pertain to the licence the customer wants to buy (Box 1 below).
Box 1 should look up the price for the required licence in Box 2, in this case a 2 year subscription (I've removed lifetime licences for now). So the selection from Box 1 should find the following in Box 2 below:
The combination of criteria selected from Box 1, and the prices in Box 2 should then return the price to quote to the customer in box 3, as below:
I've simplified the spreadsheet in this example to hopefully help you understand my logic. The reality is we have hundreds of prices as we have multiple licence variants, as well as sector and vertical pricing. Therefore if I can figure out how to get this initial step working, I should be able to take it from there.
I don't really understand your comment about redundancy, I initially started with a pop-up but couldn;t figure out how to make the other cells respond, so I broke the pop up options into tick boxes. If you have a simplified method of achieving just this step above, I'm completely happy to change my (potentially flawed) methodology.

Trouble with editing BC Blog Modules in Dreamweaver

I was wondering how to customize blog modules in dreamweaver. In dreamweaver when I add the "list of post module" into a template, then click on data, I do not see the tags to insert archive blog posts, or older and newer posts tags. How can I add and edit those tags. In the end I am looking to get a blog that looks like this. Also, is there not a way to edit the blog post detail in Dreamweaver? In BC I see that it is possible to add an image in the older and newer blog post tags. How do I do that? Thanks for all the help!

I think WP has won the battle for CMS market and all they now need to do is to monetize their market position. Can you imagine if users start paying $20 a year what they can make? They have about 80 million users and so you can do the math!!

Palm contacts software takes a big step backward

I decided to buy a Palm Pre in large part because I wanted to preserve the investment I have made in the contacts database I have built up over the years using Palm devices. I was more than a little disappointed when I discovered that Palm decided to seriously cripple the contacts software. For example, all of my contact addresses have lost all of their granularity: what used to be articulated data in separate fields for street address, city, country, postal code, etc., is now in one amorphous pile. And while I was hoping that Palm would finally allow contacts to be tagged with multiple categories, I found that instead Palm has discarded all of my category information and I can't add it back in. I used to be able to jump from the display of one contact to the next by just pressing the down button, but that doesn't work any more: you actually have to back out of the display for one contact to bring up the display for the next one. I used to be able to put in qualifying information for phone numbers, but now all Palm lets me enter are digits. And don't get me started about Palm's decision to abandon Palm Desktop and make users pay for the ability to edit their contacts on their desktop. I could go on, but I think you get the picture. Was Palm really under the illusion that their market position was so invulnerable that they could display such contempt of their customer base?

Hi, and welcome to the Palm Support Community.
All of the issues you've raised, have been raised by others so you are not alone. Going from something you know and are familiar with, to something that seems somehow "less", is frustrating.
The issue with Contacts and lack of categories can be worked around to a degree, if you try using the Company field as a replacement for Category. Then when you begin a search by simply typing that "category" all your contacts within that "Company" will display. Not perfect, but it works for me.
You do not need any third-party apps to simply edit contacts on your desktop, if you are using a Google or Yahoo Contacts database. Just log into Google, open your contacts on your desktop, and any additions/edits will sync to your handheld.
Lastly, I hardly think that Palm's design of webOS was the result of "contempt of their customer base." It's just new. But they also gave us the means to bring our data over to our new devices...not seamlessly in all cases, but I didn't lose anything in the transition.
I'm fine with the Contacts app...Calendar is where it could use the most improvement IMHO. I'm holding out hope that webOS update 1.4 (rumored on PreCentral and Sprint Forums to be due as soon as...dare I say it...today) addresses some of the Calendar issues that I'd like to see. We'll see...

Hello Developing ninja,
You need to be a member of the Mac Developer Program to be able to create a Developer ID. You can't join the Mac Developer Program at all until you are 18. There is a workaround where one of your parents can join the program and you can use their account. Apple explicitly allows this arrangement, but everything would be under your parent's name. If you want to go this route, I strongly suggest creating a new Apple ID just for your parent's Mac Developer Program. You don't want to mix developer activities with regular people activities.
My general advice for learning Xcode would be - don't - at first at least. Xcode is probably the the most complex developer environment I have ever seen. Because of Apple's market position, they have no incentive to make it any easier either. What is it that you really want to learn? Programming or Xcode? There are many ways to learn programming without having to deal with Xcode and developer ID signing certificates. Unfortunately, pretty much everything in Xcode requires advanced knowledge of the underlying technologies. Even if you know all of those but don't pay attention or get tired on day, you can slip up and scramble your app.

PNG sequence into Catalyst

Hello,
What is the easiest way to import a PNG sequence in Catalyst?
It seems to only import Flv & F4V. Flash can import my sequence but seems to have no option to export to FLV of F4V
Media Encoder does not seem to work ("the help files talks about checking a box that is NOT there in case of a sequence")
A simple all-adobe workflow would be nice (preferably not using more than three different programs). I like your programs individually, but harmonization and compatibility across Adobe products is quite poor considering your market position (sorry for that)...

Two options:
1. You could import the sequence into Flash Pro and publish as a SWF, then import the SWF into Catalyst.
2. You could import the sequence in Premiere Pro, then export it to FLV or F4V using the Media Encoder, then import that file into Catalyst.

Catch 22 with OS 10.3.9 and ANY Apple DVD Player

Can't install 4.6. Error message:
- need 10.4 OS to install
Can't install 3.1.1 Error message:
-You cannot install this software on this volumn. A newer version of the package is already installed.
Trashed every/any file that said DVD or Player. Cold reboot.
All I want to do is play a movie on my machine. Anyone know how

-find the secret decoder ring preference etc file that needs to be trashed
-install a piece of software that plays movies.

I got Pacifist extracted the Apple DVD file. It works OK reading a movie on a LaCie DVD/CD RW drive.
Works but pretty spooky.
My PowerBook CD drive doesn't seem to want to read CDs. What's up with that?
There must be some mareketing theology at foot here:
-Missing/broken software
-3d party extraction software
-3.9/4.0 backward compatability
-No visible cues at the Apple site
-RW format wars
-Movie Region codes
-The DVD controls are not intuitive
The whole area seems rife with market positioning not technology solutions.
