Marking mail as downloaded - POP

I have 2 different computers where I'm trying to sync the mail, and 2 different work email servers I need to check (but don't have to keep separate). What I currently do is check one with IMAP and the other with POP. The downloaded POP messages are moved to the IMAP inbox via a filter. That way all the mail is in one inbox for me to deal with. All works well ... except when I throw in the second computer issue. If I run the same setup on the second computer then the new pop mail is downloaded as I wish, but the older ones already downloaded by the other computer are downloaded again and I get duplicates.
When I was using Eudora, there was no problem. Eudora on different computers knew when a message had already been downloaded and did not download again. But Mail doesn't seem to know this and just downloads afresh from each computer.
Can this be set to work the way I want? (I know I could delete everything from the POP server when I first download, but I'd rather not if I don't have to). Thanks.

You don't, that's just the way it works. Mail is designed so that you don't have to double-click to open a message... just click it and read. However, you could always close the message view pane, by clicking the dividing line between it and the message list and dragging it all the way to the right edge of the window. You'll lose the ability to "preview" messages, but otherwise it should then behave the way you want.

I have to delete the account and recreate it to get my mail to start working again.
I have another pop account on the iPad and it continues to get mail, no problem.
The iPad is less than 2 weeks old and i'm totally frustrated with this... If I cant use it as i intended it's worthless to me.
I have successfully used third party apps and they get the mail when the iPad mail stops receiving (did that to confirm the iPad was working) it's apparently an issue with the iOS mail app.

I think it's good to wait for iOS5, but the answer maybe could not be there, I have some clients that had the same problem as you.

"Delete that account and create a gmail e-mail"
And you know what? I did that and it worked
I even had the tech guys from the Cell providers to see this problem, but even them didn't find a solution (just the apple final solution).

I get Apple Mail through having activated POP in gmail. Since a week, when I click on "Get Mail", after a delay I see brielfly flashing "Incoming message 70 or whathever the number in waiting is." and the green band extends to the end of the line in a fraction of a seconde, but then dissapears and no mails gets downloaded. It is not a matter of password etc.. that are all OK. Strangely, yesterdays, some email did come through after a few days of failure, but not anymore. Could it be related to hacking or something like that? Any thing I could try?

  • Mail 2.1 re-downloads already downloaded POP mail!

I recently installed Mac OS 10.4.9 on a new Mac Pro tower and my older 15" G4 Powerbook. The OS comes with Apple Mail 2.1. The problem I'm having is with Mail 2.1 regarding retrieving POP mail from the Yahoo server that has already been downloaded. Since I don't routinely clear messages from the Yahoo server, repeating a download from scratch can mean over 9000 messages. This results in duplicate messages piling up in my INBOX.
Since I download POP mail to both of my computers, I don't want to clear the Yahoo server of mail.
How do I prevent Mail 2.1 from downloading already downloaded POP mail without clearing the server?
    Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

The first time to download the messages was 2 weeks ago when I reformatted my G4 Powerbook with the new Mac OS 10.4.9. I then set up the Apple Mail 2.1 to retrieve messages from the Yahoo server. It downloaded all the messages just fine.
Then about 1 week later, when routinely checking for new mail, it started downloaded from the Yahoo server just as it had the first time (thereby creating dulicate copies of every mail message).
This has forced me to clear the Yahoo server, which I really didn't want to do.
This problem is not severe, I understand. But the older version of Mail never had this problem over 2+ years of use.

opps.  Long title there... The past few days my Mail app has started downloading multiple copies of e-mails from all pop servers.  This is only happening on my Macbook not other macs.  Deleting mail from server does not help. I ran ClamXav found 2 viruses deleted those.  Checked for software update and installed suggested downloads.  Problem still contintues.  Any suggestions?

    Folks,
even after having repaired the inbox folder under "properties" a few times, I still had some e-mails where the contents are different from the subject line.
In other words in the inbox there are two e-mails: one with subject line "abc", and another one with subject line "def".
When I display the e-mail with the subject line "abc", the contents are from the e-mail with the subject line "def" in the in-basket.
What else can be done to correct this problem?
    Thanks and best regards.

  • Switching from POP to IMAP mail without losing downloaded POP mail (??)

I want to switch from POP mail to IMAP on two different business email accounts (both support IMAP) and a Gmail account, so I'll have all my desktop mail folders on my iPhone (not just the inbox stuff).
I'm concerned about losing my downloaded POP mail in the process.
Some time ago, I switched briefly to IMAP on one of my biz email accounts (as part of a web collaboration app), and lost lots of mail in the process.
If someone could summarize the steps to do this I'd be quite appreciative!
    Paul / Los Angeles, Calif.

    Hi,
Last month I have switched to IMAP from POP for several of my email accounts. I don't think it is possible to switch to IMAP from POP without deleting the account. I didn't find anything in the preferences. I usually don't erase emails in the server, so I didn't have any problem getting all my mails back.
In case you have erased emails on the server but not in your computer, it is a good idea to backup any of your mailboxes (Using "Archive Mailbox..." in "Mailbox" menu) that you feel important.

  • Mail re-downloads messages from POP account

Mail keeps downloading the same messages (ones that have already been downloaded)each time it checks my Yahoo! POP account.
I tried deleting the file 'MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded' file in the 'user folder/Library/Mail/POP account folder/' but that didn't fix it.
    I am using Mail (1.3.11) in OS X (10.3.9)
    thanks,
    Jory

Thanks, Tom, but that box is checked and the dropdown menu below it says after one week. I like to keep them on the server for a week, just in case I need them backed up somewhere.
I failed to mention that I have had my mail set up for two years now without seeing any issue like this. I also have multiple email accounts (all with pretty similar if not identical settings) that are not having this problem.

  • Mail accounts don't download POP mail unless account is deleted and readded

Lately, I've been having trouble with Mail. It just stops downloading mail (but will send) from my server. When I login via webmail, I can always get my mail. I fix this problem by deleting the account from mail, and setting it back up again. Then it downloads all the mail from my server. It seems like after a day or so, it stops working. The problem can't be on my servers end, because it works perfectly. The problem is only in my mail program. I'm getting tired of deleting and re-adding almost every day. Any advice?

If this is a POP account, instead of deleting the mail account, you might get the same results by just deleting the file that Mail uses to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded:
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Trash. Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.x uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder.
It’s strange, however, that re-creating the account (or the MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded file) completely fixes the problem for a while, but it starts happening again shortly afterwards. Does Mail really download all the messages on the server every time you re-create the account?
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.

  • Added Gmail as POP to Apple Mail now downloading all old emails.

Is there any way to stop downloading old gmail emails, or get them to download faster. If I use my iPhone 4 it just downloads my new e-mails from gmail. However, I added my Gmail account to my iMac Apple Mail s a POP account and now it is downloading every email that I have ever received in Gmail. So far over 5000 messages about seven at a time and I am only up to December 2007!
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Thanks for the feedback.
On closer inspection there is an option on the Gmail POP setting page (in Gmail) to choose "Mail from today"!!!!! Moral of story is to RTFM
Again many thanks for taking the trouble to reply.

  • How do I get Mail to download mail and delete it from the server?

I don't think Mail is downloading my E-mail from my server to my computer.
My main e-mail account is set up as a POP mail account and I have it set to: "remove a copy from server after receiving message: right away"
I have a couple of years of e-mail on my computer and it was getting slower and slower to access many of e-mails. I checked the e-mail account on the server and the file size was huge. I browsed the file and there was a ton of old e-mails in my mail file. I figured this is what was making it really slow to access my e-mails. So I went the the setting in Mail under the advanced tab that says: Remove Now. I clicked it and it took a long long time but then my mail file on the server was emptied. But when I went to access the message in the Mail program I would get this message in italics in the body of the e-mail:
The message from Kathleen <[email protected]> concerning “Re: Tivo” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I was online and all my e-mail messages had this exact message (with the name and subject different). Why is that. I thought POP meant it was suppose to download to my computer?

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there's enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
    4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
BTW, you haven't answered which mailbox has the problem. I could be that just rebuilding that mailbox fixes it -- you should verify/repair the disk and make a backup copy of the Mail folder first, nevertheless, though.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.

  • Mail only downloads one mail at a time from Gmail

I have a gmail email account and read it using Apple Mail.
This used to work fine: every time I connected, all my mails were downloaded in one go. Recently, something has changed (all my settings are the same) and now only one mail is downloaded at a time. Since the minimum time setting to 'check new mail' in Apple Mail is once per minute, this means one mail per minute, or clicking manually for an hour in order to download over 60 new emails.
Any ideas how I can download all my mails whenever I access the internet? I have tried on different laptops (Powerbook and MacBookPro) and different versions of Mail and the problem persists. There are no obvious settings in either Gmail or Apple Mail preferences to address this.
    Thanks.
MacBook Pro   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

During the interval since my first post, I tested a little with my Gmail account, which I do not use extensively. I rapidly sent two messages from other accounts to my Gmail account, and they both showed up at the next automatic checking for new mail. Thus I conclude it should work from the Gmail end of things.
Let me suggest that you quit Mail, open Home/Library/Mail/the Gmail account folder, and find and delete the file named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2, and then relaunch Mail. This is a file in each account folder that with normal POP accounts prevents downloading any message left on a POP server more than once. Since Gmail does not really work like a normal POP in many ways, even though allowing POP access, this file would not normally play a very big role. But in this case it might have some corruption that is impacting this issue. With a normal POP account removing this file would cause any messages left on the server to again download, but with the way Gmail works, this will not happen, but may clear up something.
I tested this before posting this suggestion, and a new MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 file was created as would be expected with any POP account, once any new message was downloaded. Your one minute interval may have not allowed enough time for this file to be updated on some occasion, and may have led to its corruption.
    Keep me posted.

  • Mail stops downloading from pop3

    Hello,
Our company uses GroupWise 7, and I have MBP and Mac Pro downloading messages from the pop3 server using Mail.
Few days ago, Mail stopped downloading new messages from the server on BOTH MBP and Mac Pro.
    1. The pop server is running fine for other users. Users download messages using Thurnderbird and other clients.
    2. When Mail checks new messages, Activity Window tells me that it logs in fine, but returns no new messages although there are.
    3. I've tried to reset the program by deleting the preferences file. Initially, it downloads missing messages fine, but after that it stops working again. This only works one time.
    4. I've tried to resetting the program and the counter, but it hasn't worked.
Does anyone have a solution to this issue? Please help!
    Thank you very much.

Yeah, after a little further digging I found this thread...
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1603761&tstart=135
It seems that they still don't have a fix, but an alternate to resetting the phone is holding the home key for 5-6 seconds while in the mail app. This will restart the app and get your email flowing again without having to restart the phone.

  • How to limit the number of  emails the  mail application downloads.

I have over 5000 emails in my online account and I do not want mail do download more than 50 of my newest emails to be downloaded into the mail application. Is there a way to limit how many emails the mail application downloads? Thanks.

This question cannot really be addressed without knowing whether you are using a POP or IMAP account? Since a POP account only downloads new emails from a POP3 server, if using the same computer, then I assume you have an IMAP account? With an IMAP account, where the Inbox actually resides on the server, only the messages you seek to read are downloaded, if in Mail Preferences/Accounts/Advanced you choose an option under "Keep copies of messages for offline viewing" to not keep any copies. Of course all messages remain online on the server.
    More info if not applicable.

  • Mail is downloading 9000 old messages from March

Restarting and opening Mail this morning, strangely, Mail is downloading about 9000 (yes, nine thousand) old messages from last March. WHY?
I tried clicking on the X to cancel it, thinking it might just be a glitch, but then it started back up again.
Can you explain what's going on?
    Thanks!

I have three accounts. I didn't know the answer to your first question, but looking in my Accounts under Preferences I see IMAP under the Gmail account and POP under the two comcast accounts.
It's too late to see whether it will still do it. They all finished downloading within a half hour or so of posting my question this morning.
Now Mail is working normally, I've just been going through and re-deleting thousands of old emails. Quite annoying.
Thanks for replying. I'd love to hear if you have any idea why this happened.

  • Can't get new Mail from my Pop-Account...

    Hello,
I have a problem with Mail, as I can perfectly send but not receive Mails from my Pop-Account. The settings are fine and the problem came up suddenly. When I try to get mail from Pop-Account the application starts to load, shows the number of mails in the account, begins to count up the size and then stops. I can even see the title of the mails by opening the window of the Account, but Mail does not download them.
I would be really pleased if anybody could give me an advice what to do.

Hello and thanks to both of you,
I am using Mail 3.1 and the Account is coming from Strato, a German provider. Before, I had no problems neither with receiving nor with sending, but suddenly it stoped. I tried another account (gmail) that worked without any problem. Also your advice with SSl and the ports did not help . I Also phoned the Helpline of the provider Strato without any result . Also the place does not change - it neither works at home nor at work.
