Marquee selection in CS4 "crops" to image edges. How to reset?

In CS3, when you make a large selection using the circular marquee (ie: alt-drag until the selection grows past the image edges), it maintains the full selection.  But in CS4, it crops to the edges of the image.  Is there an option to fix this so marquees behave like they did in CS3?
See the image below for an example of what I mean:

Thank you for the report. Now, did the Layer (Selected and active), have pixels beyond the borders of the image?
To answer the question, yes. But... drawing a marquee and then dragging it out works irrespective of layer content.
Just checked again:
1/ In CS3, drawing marquee, irrespective of content, retains the circular shape even if exceeding the canvas.
2/ In CS4, irrespective of content, marquee crops to the two sides of the canvas with the circular shape that was inside.
3/ In both CS3 and CS4 you can draw a marquee within the canvas and then drag it out
Maybe there's a setting in CS4????
PS - I just cannot imagine any Selection encompassing any area, where no pixels can be selected, as there are none.
Hunt... that doesn't make sense... of course you can draw a marquee / selection without content... It's the copying / cutting /etc. that will be affected...

    Hi,
    Try resetting the crop tool.
To the right of the tool option bar, click on the little horizontal lines and you should see reset tool option.

  • Adobe PSE 8.0 - "crop scanned images"

    Hiho!
I've bought PSE 8.0 to rework allready scanned Tiffs. Each Tiff includes 3 - 5 (almost aligned) images. Now I found the menu item "crop scanned images" (or how its named; I've a german version). But when I select this menu item PSE begins to preform something wich results in a 1:1 copy of the original TIFF. I guess thats not the result I've to expect. I tested a few other TIFFs too but the result is always the same.
The Tiffs are really nothing special. White background with colored photos. Hm, do I have to preform some adjustments before to prepare this action? I'm really confused.

The fact that your photo's are "almost aligned" may be what's causing the problem.
The Cropped Scanned Photos feature is designed to take a scan of multiple photos and separate them out into individual photos. If your photos are already well aligned, and seem to blend together, then the algorithm is likely having trouble picking them apart.
You may need to crop them out manually.
If you post one here, I'd be happy to take a look at it and offer some better (hopefully) advice.
    Cheers

You'll find the Crop Tool on the Toolbar.  It might be behind the Slice or Perspective Crop tool.

  • Photoshop Elements 9: fill edges after crop the image

    Hello together,
I have generated a nice panorama with PSE9, after that PSE9 asks me to fill the edges. But the part which should be filled are quiete big, because of the deformation in the panorama. And I get always the message that I have not enough memory to fill the edges. So my idea was to crop the panorama and fill the edges after that, but i didn't find the option to fill the edges in the menu bar.
Can anybody tell me how to do that?

    Hi,
thanks for your answer, but this takes not the effect i want.
With the funktion "Edge Extension" the image will only be zoomed in/out.
Perhaps I haven't explained it exactly enough.
I have found a example with google:
    http://pagrimes.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/04/Screen-shot-2010-04-30-at-9.25.55-PM.png
You can see, there is too much space wich would be filled. So I would crop the image to the area which I'm interessted. After I have croped it, I will fill automaticly the edges like I can do after I have generated a panorama.
I want to call the same funktion which is behind the question "Would you like to fill in the edges of your panorama?”.
I hope my request could be solved.
    thanks and greets

  • How do i crop "out" a piece of image=ex: how it will look when its cut for a window. Crop a white space in image?

How do i crop "out" a piece of image=ex: how it will look when its cut for a window. Crop a white space in image?

I think this will help if you are using version 11 or 12.
Make a selection with a selection tool of the area you want to remove.
Example: rectangular marquee tool - make a rectangle.
    Use Select>Refine Edge:
Use the View section of this dialog box to see a few views.
If you need to refine the edge of the selection (smooth, feather, shift, etc.) you can do that in this dialog box.
You may want to check the box about remembering your settings in case you need to come back to them.
In the Output section, you can pick New Layer with Layer Mask and click OK.
You should see the hole in your image.

  • How do you crop an image, then modify that cropping?

This takes the cake for simpleton question of the day.
Cropping an image in Illustrator or in InDesign is a breeze.
But how do you control it in Fireworks?
I make a selection with the marquee tool, go to edit and choose crop selected bitmap.
Now, do you mean to tell me that there is no way to modify that crop after the fact?
Can you at least delete the crop without deleting the image?
    This cant be this unintuitive.
    Surely Im missing something...

Masks, yes, masks are great! If you just want to hide parts of your image from view, create a mask. Masks can be other bitmaps or vector objects. Create and position your mask object over your original bitmap. Select both then Modify > Mask > Group as Mask. You can easily undo the masking. White areas in a mask reveal the underlying object. Black or transparent areas in the mask cause your original image to be transparent for those pixels. Grey or semi-transparent produce a proportionally transparent result.
There's also the Paste Inside option, where you can paste your bitmap into a vector shape. The nice thing there is that you can move your bitmap around. (I'm pretty sure, anyway. I don't use this feature.)
Anyway. You have lots of options to remove or hide pixels. The approach you take depends on your needs and preferences.
If you have an image to share and a goal to achieve, we might be able to advise you better.

  • How to crop an image on a layer?

I am using PSE 6 for Mac. I have dragged an image onto a canvas with three layers. When I crop the image using either the crop tool or a selection>image≥crop, it crops the entire canvas, rather than just the image on the layer. Can this be done?
Related question: I dragged an image onto the canvas and wanted to scale it up. I grabbed it with the move tool and dragged the corner box, holding the shift key to constrain proportion. But it does not constrain with the shift key. Am I doing it wrong?
    Thanks.

To just crop a layer, you need to use the rectangular marquee tool to select where the layer is to be cropped then invert the selection and press the delete key. (Shortcut for Selection<Inverse = I believe on Mac it's Command + Shift + I...on PC it's Ctrl + Shift + I).
This did not work for me. I got an error message that "the Smart Object is not directly editable."

You need to use the transform command not the move tool. Shortcut Edit<Free Transform = I believe on Mac it's Command + T...on PC it's Ctrl T.
Yes, hold in the shift key to constrain it to scale. If you want it to scale to the center instead of to one of the corners, hold in the Shift + Option key (I believe it's Option on the Mac...On PC it's Shift + Alt.) Alternately, you can set the width (either by using transform handles or by inputting numbers in the width box) then click the chain between width and height in the options bar to make the height match the width.
I have stumbled onto the solution: if I DON'T hold down the shift key while dragging, proportions are constrained. If I DO hold down the shift key, proportions are NOT constrained. This seems to be the opposite of what I remember, but it works.
    Thanks.

  • PP CS4 Crop Effect clarification

    PP CS4 Crop Effect Help
    Crop effect
The Crop effect trims rows of pixels from the edges of a clip and automatically resizes the trimmed clip to its original dimensions. Use the slider controls to crop each edge of the clip separately. You can crop by pixels or image percentage.
    Two Problems:
After the crop the trimmed clip is not resized to it's original dimensions.
No way I can find to switch the controls to pixels.
    Thanks.

There is a zoom option check box that will automatically resize the cropped clip to the full dimensions of the sequence. I dont remember that option available in previous versions and I know I never used if it was.
I can see where this option might be useful especially with a higher resolution still by making an easy way to scale up from somewhere other than the center of the frame instead of needing to combine scale and motion keyfranes. It would be kind of like moving the anchor point in After Effects and then scaling.

  • Difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images, percentage not kept

There is some kind of difference between CS3 and CS4 when placing images. The images I've dealt with right now were vector images but it might apply to all kinds of images.
When replacing an existing image, the CS4 behaviour is to let the image fill up the frame. In CS3 the percentage was set to 100% as default (the % you see when selecting the image, not the container).
Also when replacing an impage in CS4, the "inner" image frame is kept, while in C3, the percentage was kept.
Is there some kind of placement preferences / settings to let CS4 act the same wat as CS3 did, when placing an image?
    -- Andreas

Yes, the behavior was changed in CS4 (and many users, like me, prefer the new system).
If you click and drag a loaded image place cursor the entire image will be be scaled to fit the proportionally drawn frame -- a huge timesaver if you mostly place uncropped art. If you want 100% of the image at 100% scale, just click and release -- same as before, or as before you can pre-draw a frame and place into it and your image will come in cropped at 100% (unless you've changed the fitting options for the frame before placing).

  • Has anyone experienced this strange behavior when selecting a region of an image in preview?

When I select a section of an image that has the height and/or width of one pixel, the bounding box does the strange thing pictured to the left (at around 6x mag).  The box starts out the correct dimension on that axis (i.e., 1 px), but tapers down to 0 px by the other end of that line.  Below is an example (at 80x) if a 1 x 2 px box.  Depending on the direction you sweep the mouse when selecting the box can also appear as a single diagonal, horizontal, or vertical line.
Copying and pasting the selection demonstrates that this does not have an effect on the shape of the selection, only on how it is displayed.
I don't suppose that this is anything but a curious little bug with no impact on performance, though it could be confusing to some small subset of users.

Interesting but I do not see this in my Preview/cropping.

Restart the system and see if there is a "Recovered Files" folder in the trash. Preview often leaves the original file there when it does a save.

  • How do I crop an image to 3.5 x 5

I'm trying to match the size and aspect ratio of an older photo.  The old photo was printed at 3.5" x 5.0".
How do I crop an image with Aperture to 3.5x5.0?
    Thanks.

When you crop, the only control is the aspect ratio. You can crop an image with a custom ratio by selecting "custom" at the bottom of the aspect ratio popup menu in the Crop HUD that appears while in the Crop command.
The size only matters when you print the image. In the print dialog you can set the size in inches of the printed image. The dpi of the printed photo will depend on the pixel size of the image divided by the printed size in inches.
If you want to control the exact dpi of the printed image, you'll need a pixel editor such as Photoshop.
