Marquee Tool 1 Pixel Off

Good Evening
I recently downloaded the Adobe PS CS5 trial, very happy so far.
However this evening I have had an issue with the marquee tool being 1 pixel off, making selections very hard...
I have a Nvidia 8600 GT, 4GB of RAM, Windows 7 64 bit
I have googled and researched solutions, seems the most reccomended method is to disable OpenGL however this seemed specific to ATI cards
I have tried this anyway, both on and off and it makes no difference unfortunately
I have updated CS5 and my GFX drivers and still no difference
Is there any other reccomendations please?
Thanks

Some say it's a nVidia driver glitch.  I have reproduced it on one of my nVidia-equipped systems, and it's not the same with an ATI card, though arguably it's off on the ATI system too, just in a different way.
Try temporarily disabling OpenGL Drawing (Edit - Preferences - Performance) and see if the problem persists.
You lose a few things without OpenGL.  This page describes more:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/404/kb404898.html
Installing the latest nVidia driver from their web site might help.

  • When I use the marquee tool the photo starts flashing on and off?

Hi when I am using the marquee tool the photo keeps flashing on and off and turning black?

I am not sure what you are asking, or about what Adobe software.

  • Inaccurate Marquee tool

I've recently upgraded from Photoshop cs3 to cs5.1 and have noticed that the marquee tool's selection is not as accurate as I'd like. For something simple like drawing a selection around a square I could previously do this down to the exact pixel with a single click and drag. My process (while working at 100%) now goes like this:
    i) Choose which bit of the cursor I place in the top left of the square to trace (I use the black inner lines)
ii) Click and begin dragging and see that the selection in the top left is now 1 pixel down and 1 pixel to the right of where I clicked.
iii) Drag the selection to the bottom right of the square and align the inner lines of the crosshair
iv) Release the mouse button. The top left corner now springs back into the originally clicked position (good). The bottom right corner now jumps up to 2 pixels up and 2 pixels left of the actual corner.
I am left trying to approximate how far past my object corner I overshoot in order for it to be correct when it 'jumps' back. It feels as though I'm getting similar selection errors as if I was working at a random image zoom such as 337%
Anyone else experiencing this or more importantly know how to remedy it?
    Thanks

    Notes
Jumping problem is the same if 'snap' is turned on or off
The problem occurs at 100% and is marginally improved at 200% - although I can't get an accurate selection in 10 attempts.
Also in cs3 the Marquee tool's crosshair was 1 pixel thick and now in cs5.1 it is 3 pixels thick due to the white outline around it, I find this harder to use and unable to switch off.
Selecting cursors 'precise' in preferences doesn't fix it

I tried filling a rectangular selection larger than the screen, and duplicating it free hand on another layer, but was one pixel out on two sides.  So I tried again at 200% and it was spot on.
This sounds like a similar effect, the requirement to zoom into the image in order to place an accurate selection. I've tried this repeatedly and the amount the marquee jumps is different each time, between 1-2 pixels up and to the left.
I'm trying to cut out many web type graphics which are only a couple of hundred pixels in height/width. Without an accurate selection tool at 100% my workflow is now:
    i) Select Zoom and click three times to get to 400% (At which point selection becomes 90% accurate)
    ii) Make the selection
iii) Double click the zoom tool to get back to 100% view
That is an overhead of five clicks which seems a bit long winded. Or I can re-open the file in Photoshop cs3 and select more accurately, which I don't really want to do.
Does anyone know of an option that can be toggled to make the Marquee tool more accurate or is a jumping selection on release just how it is?

  • Photoshop CS4 selection tool 1px off

    HI,
for some reason, when using rectangular marquee tool in PS CS4, the selection is 1px off. Ie, when i draw a selection rectangle around a box, on 100% zoom it seems a perfect fit, but when zooming closer, the selection is off to the left by 1 px.
When i use "transform selection" and drag the selection 1px to match the shape again on high zoom, it shows OK both on 100% and zoomed in.

  • Rectanqular marquee tool bug (opengl)

I performed photoshop reset few days ago due some color problems and now Photoshops basic selection tool: Rectanqular marquee tool has some visibility bug. Left and top sides of the selection does not go outside of the selected pixels, it's kind of half way (half pixel) on top and left pixels. Right and bottom goes normally outside of the pixels.
Really irritating because it's very hard to see is it inside or outside of selection.
Already tried tool reset, photoshop re-install, settings removal, total CS4 removal and re-install and now luck, so it must be system related ? I'm quite sure it worked earlier and does work my work computer.
See attached picture, the pink line is 1pixel and selections does not touch it
Update: Works when OpenGL drawing is disabled on performance settings, but this is not a fix :/

I changed the settings so it is better now, but still have the freezing problem with the resizing and the brush tool. Some one suggested the problem is the graphic   card so i will send my computer back as i haven't got problem on my macbook just on the imac.  good luck to you as well  and if you find something let me know.

  • Divide layer into 4 quarters and trouble with marquee tool.

Help, please!!! Because I will be doing this often in the near future, I need to create an action to precisely divide a LAYER into 4 quarters, in order to easily create seamless patterns. I'm having trouble figuring out how to automate the placing of guides limited to the center points of the selected layer dimensions, as opposed to the entire image's dimensions. My second difficulty is in selecting the quarters; using the marquee tool, etc, the selection tool is NOT snapping to the guides, despite what I have the Snap To preferences set to. I need to select the pixels right up to the guide line so that I can select the "Make a new layer via cut" and then move the new layers in position to make a seamless tile. Right now, it is selecting a few pixels off. (Annoying!) So until I can figure out how to address these issues, I can't even begin to record an action. Even if I can't record a general action, due to the problem of different layers having different dimensions, I'd be happy to discover a shortcut to accurately quartering a layer and any advice as to why I'm having trouble managing the marquee tool. Maybe I'll get lucky and some kind soul will have already created and be willing to share something to solve this problem I'm currently trying out the CS6 Beta but usually work in either CS5 or PSE 9. For those of you who respond, thanks in advance!

If you want to give a Script a try, paste the following text into a new file in ExtendScript Toolkit (part of Photoshop’s installation, Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities/ExtendScript Toolkit CS4 or /Applications/Utilities/Adobe Utilities-CS5/ExtendScript Toolkit CS5) and save it as a jsx-file into Photoshop’s Presets/Scripts-folder.
After restarting Photoshop the Script should be available under File > Scripts and can be assigned a Keyboard Shortcut directly, recorded into an Action, (in CS4 and CS5) be used in a Configurator-Panel or started from ExtendScript Toolkit directly.

  • Rectangular Marquee Tool (Short cut M)...

I have upgraded to CS5. I cannot access to the Rectangular Marquee Tool with a short cut (M) any longer. M brings up the Eliptical Marquee Tool. Where is the Rectangular Marquee Tool? How can I access?
    Thnx

Check the units you specified for the fixed size. My guess is that it's set to something larger than your image.
Yes, thanks - I was just about to post a response to my own question. They were cm, rather than pixels!

  • Rectangular Marquee tool broken in CS5.1?

The rectangular marquee tool no longer seems to work when choosing the "Fixed size" option. It seems to just select the entire image area regardless of what values are entered.
This is with version CS5.1 as provided in Creative Suite Design Premium CS5.5.
I've had no problems with this tool in other versions. Can anyone else confirm this behaviour?
    I'm running OSX 10.6.7

  • Delete area using Rectangular Marquee Tool

    Hi Sir/Mdm,
I was wondering why I cannot delete an specific area using Rectangular Marquee Tool. I have dragged the Rectangular Marquee Tool to define an area then I hit the "Del" key on the keyboard. I was prompted with the "Fill->Contents> dialog box. Pls advise and thanks in advance.

What do you want to accomplish by "Delete"?
If you have a Background (no layers) then you can only fill it with pixels, as Background cannot have transparency.  You can cause a fill of the background color (as shown in the background swatch in the Tools panel) without a prompt by holding the Control key down when pressing Delete.
The menu gives you access to a number of other useful fill options for a Background, such as Content Aware Fill.
To make a Background into a Layer, which can support transparency, double click the Background in the Layers panel, then confirm the dialog.  Pressing Delete with a part of a non-background layer selected will simply make the selected part transparent.

  • CS4 bug: Rectangle Marque Tool unwanted off-set

I feel like there are a lot of annoying bugs in CS4. The latest and greatest bug is with the Rectangle Marquee Tool (Selection Tool). When the tool is selected from the tool bar I get the cross-hairs/bar cursor icon, which is totally fine... instead of drawing the axis point from the very center of the cursor, it's off-set to the bottom of the cursor icon. In other words, It will always be 10-20 px off from where I actually want to make my selection...
May not be a big deal to most people, but when you're trying to select small pieces and move them, this should be accurate.
I dump my preference files, toggle workspaces. It's a temporary fix, is anyone else noticing this?

Yep, Ann has the band-aid solution. Unfortunately, it won't cure the disease but it does work to quickly get rid of the symptom.
You might also see this annoying behavior with other tools like offset brush cursors and the path tool. Same (temporary) fix - hit F a couple of times.

  • Rectangler marquee tool seems to be feathering my selection ?

    Hi everybody
I have selected some content, that is 100% solid colour and no Alpha, in my image with Rectangler Marquee Tool (with feather set to 0px).  I want open this content in a new window so i ctrl-c or ctrl-shift-c, then make new document ctrl-n  and paste it in.      When I zoom in,   1 pixel on the left and right sides are partially transparent.
I'd very much appreciate some clarity on this as it has brought my web-design to a halt
    Regards
    Thomas

Uncheck the Anti-Aliasing setting.  This setting helps reduce jagged edges, but essentially feathers the selection at the edges.

  • Rectangle marquee tool is rounding at the edges, how to I revert to sharp edges?

The rectangle marquee tool is rounding at the edges of my selections and when I try to fill with solid color, it fills very transparently and almost water-color like.
I don't know how the settings were changed, but I need help reverting them back to normal.
FYI: When I select an area using the rectangle marquee tool, an error message pops up that says "Warning: No pixels are more than 50% selected. The selection edges will not be visible."
I am not very savvy with this program, but need to finish creating a flyer by this afternoon. Please help!

    Hi,
You probably have a feather value other than zero set in the tool options bar.

  • Photoshop lags when i use the marquee tool

I recently updates to Photoshop CC (2014) and ever since I did I have been having problems with lag when using the Marquee tool. I have tried reinstalling Photoshop and even downgrading back to CC but it doesn't help. Does anyone know what causes this?

  • Photoshop Marquee tool issue with unwanted opposite selections

What is the cause and fix for this:
    screenshot
I am clicked on that layer.
    I choose the Marquee tool.
I click around the area I want to select.
Phtoshop, not me, creates these inexplicable unwanted selection areas opposite of what I want, they are unwanted.
At times, these unselected or deselected areas run off the page.
At times I begin or end my selection off the canvas NOT always.
I have lived with this for months (maybe years) but it has got to stop.
Anyone ANYone?? know what is causeing this??

The first thing to try is a reset of the Marquee tool by right clicking on it in the Tools Option bar at the top. Choose Reset Tool.
It usually fixes forgotten adjustments and other glitches that causes a tool to malfunction.
Ctrl click if you own a Mac.

  • Why does my screen keep flashing and then turn black when I use the marquee tool?

When I bring up a photo to work on and i try to draw circle or square with the Marquee tool my screen flashes black and then stays black until I use the move tool?

This issue is associated with your graphics driver not being compatible with PS' hardware acceleration. Updating the driver if possible would be advisable, otherwise turn off OpenGL drawing under Preferences --> Performance.
