Marquee tool and feather question

Hi,
When I select the marquee tool with feather, and select inverse to remove part of an image so that the image has rounded corners, there is always some kind of gradient applying to the borders .... is there anything I need to configure to make sure the selction gets removed without this effect ? Or is it just not a wright way to do this ?

You can do it by going to Quick Mask mode, and then either:
Run Threshold on the QM channel with a value of 127, or
Run Levels with the shadow and highlight sliders moved almost all the way in towards the center, for pseudo-anti-aliasing,
and then go back to Standard Mode.
But using the Rounded Rectangle tool and converting it to a selection is definitely the way to go.

HI,
When I make a selection with the marquee tools and then copy and paste that selection there is a Fade-in added to the file. What's causing this and is there a way to fix it?

Open the Editor and on the top tool bar click Window
Check the ones you want.
You can dock them in the pallet on the right by dragging until you get the blue outline then simply drop.
I have my tabs set up in two layers but you can choose your own layout with more or less.

Marquee tool and shape tool not working properly

I have Photoshop CS five, and today while working in it, the behavior of all of my tools changed.
Tools are now defaulting to “select from center” mode, which normally requires holding down the option key.
As another clue, if I create a marquee selection, as soon as I release the mouse button the Marquis tool switches to “intersect with selection” mode.
I quit Photoshop and deleted all of my Adobe Photoshop preferences, however when I relaunched Photoshop the problem was still there.
I thought maybe my option key was stuck down, but when I tried typing in stickies, characters typed normally, so my option key is not stuck in the down position.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

I actually spent some time with Adobe tech support working on the problem. You are correct it was a bug; they had me update my Photoshop AND delete this file from my preferences folder: com.adobe.Photoshop.plist — those two things did the trick.

Color blender tool and other questions

Hey. I've got Photoshop CS4, which I've been using pretty successfully for digital and pixel art, but there's still a lot to the program that's unknown to me, and trying to google up an answer isn't getting me anywhere. I've got a few questions.
Is there some sort of color blender tool in CS4? By color blender, I mean something that will easily let me pick two separate colors and generate a range of colors that are between them. The tool at http://meyerweb.com/eric/tools/color-blend/ is an example of a program that does what I'm hoping Photoshop can do.
Is there a way to simultaneously view my canvas both zoomed in and at it actual size as I draw? This is mainly for pixel art, where the art close-up can look really different from the actual product. A little actual-sized canvas in the corner of my screen that updated as I made changes to the art in zoom in would save me the time I spend fiddling with magnifying glasses.
Is there was way to keep the smudge tool at full opacity? When using it, smudging edges of color onto a blank space makes them start to get transparent. As of now I just get rid of it by multiplying the layer a few times and then merging, but is there a way to disable that?
If there are no definite ways to do these things, any suggestions or guides you know of would be useful too. Thanks!

Select the gradient tool, it is an alternate tool to the paint bucket one (Hit Shift+G until you see it replace the Paint Bucket tool)
Double-click on the gradient you see in the option bar, you will then get the gradient editor http://help.adobe.com/en_US/photoshop/cs/using/WSfd1234e1c4b69f30ea53e41001031ab64-77dfa.h tml
Double-click on the first color stop to get an eyedropper, sample your first color, do the same with the end one, and the second color.
Once your gradient is created, you'll be able to lay down a gradient, and pick the middle color with the eyedropper tool.

Photoshop CS6 keeps crashing when I select Horizontal Type Tool, Rectangular Marquee Tool and Crop T

and probably more, but when you consider how little functionality the loss of those three buttons give me, you can understand how little use I am getting out of CS6 so far.
It makes no difference whether I use 32-bit or 64-bit.
I am using Windows 7 Home Premium on a relatively new Toshiba Satellite C660-1LD with 2.53 gigahertz Intel Core i3 M 380 with 3892 Megabytes Usable Installed Memory* with onboard Intel(R) HD Graphics.

I sometimes get a message on load saying that Photoshop cannot find my 3D settings (although my Graphics card has 3D capability), but as I'm not using Photoshop's 3D editing tools, this is no issue to me at present.
Any other information I can give you, I will. As you can imagine, this is hugely frustrating, and making Photoshop unusable.

Rect marquee tool question

Hello
I have opened a JPG in Photoshop CS version 8 and wish to select part of the rectangular image (which now measures 615px wide by 380px high) and paste that image into its own layer.
So if for example I want to my selection to measure 324px wide by 380px high, I simply click on the marquee tool and under style change Normal to Fixed Size and type in my required dimentions in the Width and Height boxes along the top. When I have selected that part of the image I want, I just need to select Layer | New | Layer via cut.
But what about the remaining part of my image that I also want to paste into its own layer? Do I just reset the width and heigh dimensions of the rectangular marquee too (in my example this would be 615px for the original length of the image less the 324px I have subtracted for my first new layer = 291px wide to be pasted onto my second layer).
Is this the most precise way of doing it, because when the two parts are later joined I would need them to match perfectly (they image is of a person's face, so any lack of precision would stick out like a sore thumb!).

Can I just clarify? After I have duplicated the layer, I select part of the image (from left to right) using the marquee tool, pressed delete and then Select | Inverse. When I do that, I can see the right-hand side of the image pasted in what is my Background copy layer.
Then, I duplicate the Background again, and with the marquee selected over the right-hand portion of the image, I click delete and then Select | Inverse.
I think the Select | Inverse confused me a bit, but at the moment in the Layers panel I have the original Background, Background copy (with the right-hand part of the image pasted in), and now Background copy 2 with the left-hand part of the image pasted into that.

Problems with layers and the marquee tool

Hello all,
All I am trying to do is figure out how to use the marquee tool to delete the bottom 2/3rds of a rounded rectangle.
Here's what I am doing:
Clicking on the rounded rectangle and drawing it to the size I want
selecting the marquee tool and selecting the area of the rounded rectangle I want to delete.
After I selected the area with the marquee tool, I press delete and instead of the area I selected being deleted, the whole layer is deleted instead. Does anybody have any idea what I am talking about, and can anybody help me?

you are making shape layers with the Rounded Rectangle Tool by default, change it to fill pixels(in the Options bar), make a new layer on which to draw your rounded rectangle and then use the Marquee Tool to select and delete a part of it. Another option is to leave it set to shape layers, select the area you want to hide with the Marquee Tool and then Alt+click on the Add Layer Mask icon at the botom of the Layers panel (or in the Masks panel)

Rectangler marquee tool seems to be feathering my selection ?

I have selected some content, that is 100% solid colour and no Alpha, in my image with Rectangler Marquee Tool (with feather set to 0px). I want open this content in a new window so i ctrl-c or ctrl-shift-c, then make new document ctrl-n and paste it in. When I zoom in, 1 pixel on the left and right sides are partially transparent.
I'd very much appreciate some clarity on this as it has brought my web-design to a halt

Uncheck the Anti-Aliasing setting. This setting helps reduce jagged edges, but essentially feathers the selection at the edges.

Marquee tool in CS2

Hello everybody,
I got a question. My dad bought iMac a year ago with CS2 installed on it. Now, I am starting to use it. Before I used CS2 on Windows in school. When I started using CS2 on iMac I've noticed that it is slower and I have got a problem with marquee tool. The problem is using it as a cutter (for intance to make a hole in other shape). In school I did it this way: I selected the area I want to cut with the marquee tool and simply hit delete button. On iMac delete simply doesn't work in CS2. I thought it was a keyboard fault but delete perfectly works in any other application. Does the Mac version of CS2 uses some key and commands in a different way?

Rectangular Marquee Tool screen artifacts

Hi - I have a problem with Photoshop CS3 (version 10.0) on a Windows XP Professional computer. When I try to use the rectangular marquee tool to select an area of any image the selection marker leaves dotted artifacts across the parts of the images over which the selection marker has passed.
I don't get the problem if I use any of the marquee tools and the artifacts are not actually written to the image. It's not runining the image but it is causing some problems when trying to be precise with my selections.
Has anyone seen this problem before? I can provide screen shots if that would be of any help.

Photoshop Elements 11 Marquee Tool

I am trying to use the marquee tool and have selected rectangle and despite this selection I am unable to create a square or rectangle. Initially the shape is correct and than it converts over to an eliptical shape. What can I do to create a square or rectangle selection? Thanks

Perhaps you need to click on the elipse or ractangle icon (as appropriate). See this picture:
The above window is at the bottom of the screen when you are in Editor as Expert.

Editing Drums using the marquee tool

I am so frustrated w logic 9 right now, i strongly dislike flex and i am trying to use the "tab to next transient" method in protools to edit a multitrack drum recording that needs tightening up. This is where logic is a toy made by a toy shop for me as apposed to a professional tool.
In logic 8 there was a way to use the marquee tool and cut up the transients then apply quantize to your groove to tighten things up. heres what happens now, after i select the files with the marquee and make the cut i cannot move to the next transient as the marquee highliter goes away and i have to start again to get to the next transient. this makes this process sooooooo tedious as i have to go back to the beginning of the track and right arrow over what i have done to get to the next transient. I tried reading up on the functions of this tool as its not something i use in every project, but relying on the manual is like getting a pamphlet on how to fly a rocket ship and then fastening your seat belt.

only after you make a cut with the marquee tool you loose your spot with the highliter and have to select and restart to get to the next transient....if i could make a cut and go to the next one i would finally accomplish what im trying to do. is this not possible in logic 9??????

Single row/column marquee tool "add to" not working

I was trying to follow along with a tutorial that was using the single row/column marquee tool. In it they used shift click to add to the selection. It's not working for me. I also tried clicking on the add to icon for the marquee tool, and it still doesn't work. Does anyone know what the problem could be and how I might fix it?

hey i know this is late but if its any help now all u need to do i zoom in a lil closer the proceed with the selection. hope i helped. oh and u have to make sure your grid lines are perfectly on the 10,20,30,... percent mark and u have to be zoomed in if u want to see your lines. the problem is your file is too big and has somn to do with ur computer. its not only mac windows too.
p.s. when ur done drawing the boxes u can zoom out...i know the tutorial

HT1553 I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error...

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.
