bad sectors happen all the time.   i wouldn't worry about replacing a drive until you see a critical failure.   if you have no other means of backup (since RAID shouldn't be used as a means of backup anyway) then you may want to look into either OLDB (online data backup) and/or keeping spare drives around in the event of a unrecoverable failure.

  • D20 with Win7(Finnish) + Marvell Raid Utility: Cannot log in as administrator

This is not really just "Lenovo problem", but more like Marvell-issue. But hoping that someone here would have encountered this similar problem.
    using: 2x 500GT (Ide-)HD as RAID1, Win7 professional (Finnish version).
Marvell Raid Utility (MRU) uses win7's user database to check out which user has the right to adjust raid-stuff. The MRU is a web-browser -based. My problem is, that I cannot log into MRU with admiministrator rights.
    Tried so far:
    - My "user name" has all the rights it should
    - Checked out that my name is listed in the administrator group
    - Made a new user named: Administrator with admin rights
    - Cannot launch MRU with "Run as administrator" (it is just a link-icon to a "web-page" : localhost://, etc)
    - Tried to use different browsers as "run as administrator" (exploder, firefox, chrome)
    - Tried to run diff.browsers as normally
    - Tried to log into the mru with different usernames (with administrator rights)
    - Tried to install MRU using "run as administrator" hoping that the rights would "transfer" to the installed program
MRU always logs me in as "Guest". It shows that there is two physical discs and a virtual disk has been created. But I can't to anything with the two disks, cannot format them, cannot make anything - windows doesn't even understand the disks - it finds them allright (with: Devices -> diskdrives(?) -> marvell raid VD 0 SCSI Disk Device : Drives (Refresh) // Type: Unknown, State/Status: Unformatted, Type: Not usable, size: 476860MB...)
    Solved!

you can access the marvell BIOS at POST by pressing ctrl+M.   this will allow you to set up RAID manually.

  • Fixing RAID Utility Disorganized Event Time?

As I know this may happen to you guys using RAID Card on Xserve, the RAID Utility shows incorrect Time under Events console, say, after the battery reconditioning. For instance, the Event log shows Time 11/12/32 7:42 AM Battery started conditionging cycle (write cache disabled).
Is there any way to delete/modify this metadata log file? The time is just incorrect and Clear it will not remove the event from log file. Since it is logged in year 2032, the record will always stay at the very top, hindering the sight of my every new events (very annoying).
Any clue to find the whereabouts of this RAID log file? Thanks.

  • RAID Utility software not available in OS X Mavericks?

Up till yesterday I have been using a RAID card in my Mac Pro (Mid 2010, 4 x 1 TB SATA, initially as RAID-5, now in a RAID-10 setup) under OS X 10.8.5 without any issues, and the RAID utility allowed me to check the status od me disks, event log, and the battery status / refresh cycles for the RAID card. Last night now I upgraded to OS X Mavericks. The upgrade went well, things appear to work OK, obviously at least half of my RAID-10 array is in use — however, I can't find the RAID utility, check the status of the RAID-10 system and the battery status of the RAID card. The disk utility shows the RAID set - but none of the underlying features (individual disks and their status, logs, battery) — am I thrown back to a soft RAID, and my investment into a RAID card has evaporated?

Thanks a lot, Seliqui! the reason why I did not find it is that a) after the upgrade to Mavericks, the icon that I previously had parked in the dock no longer worked, and b) the new location for the utility can't be found anywhere on the Launchpad. I suspect both effects are an indication that they missed to add the new directory to the command path. I can hardly imagine that this was deliberate because if you have a RAID card you definitely want to have access to that utility — not just in case of a disk failure (I have had a couple of these!), but also in order to stop the user from doing things one is not supposed to do while the battery is reconditioning.

  • Raid Utility wont Initialize a volume

    Hi.
My Raid Utility won't initialize last two volumes. I have 3 tasks, 2 volume initialize tasks are Suspended, after that there is one Rebuild task that has a Scheduled status (the loading bar, no status bar). I did some digging and cleared all the events in the Controller status list. Both volumes are working, but won't initialize ? I tried rebooting, i got few more events that raid card started the rebuild process, then aborted it, then started it again, then aborted, and then started again. General status is Raid is rebuilding, but still I am not seeing the real status bar, like i saw last time. Is it really doing something or jammed?
It looks like the 2 suspended tasks would be preventing the rebuild to start, but the event log says it has started. Will the volumes initialize properly after the rebuild or do I need to get them to initialize them somehow before the rebuild can start?

Usually the drives have to be formatted separately as well as partitioned separately.
However, I don't quite understand what you are doing. You currently have four 500 GB drives configured as a RAID 0+1 which I would understand to mean two 500 GB drives striped, a second pair striped. That is two 1 TB striped arrays that are then combined into a mirrored array which would be 1TB. Now as I understand you want to resize one 500 GB drive that is already in the array. This I don't get.

  • RAID Utility & RAID Card

I have my new super-duper Mac Pro tower 3.2 GHz with RAID card and I installed 4 identical 1 TB drives and made a RAID 5 array. Now, the issue is that I have had two power outages, and my UPS seems to have missed picking them up (I have a new UPS now for the tower), but here is the deal, I get the bad event, clear the event log, "initialize" the array (~1 day), Verify the array (~3 days) and RAID Utility can still give me the message that the array is "bad".
So, I have, in sequence, a failure, a rebuild, a verify, a reboot (clean) and it goes back and complains it needs to rebuild from scratch even though it already has done so ...
Also, clearing the errors does not seem to clear the errors from the log ...
So, is it me ... or does the RAID Utility stink?

    FeistMeister wrote:
    Um, that was the point.
I did a rebuild between the crash and the next one, and a verify ...
    I missed that.
And after the second crash I did a complete initialize and verify with clean bill of health and all green dots....
Now I am 3-4% into the initialize which will take until tomorrow sometime to finish ... then I can reverify ... but the point is that it does not seem to want to forget the past ... and "clearing" the log does not seem to make it forget the past either ...
Well, it still boots off the array, and seems to run fine so I suppose I should not be TOO annoyed, but I expected better from Apple ... and better speed off of a dedicated $800 RAID card ... Oh, and the battery is fully charged ....
I have never used RAID, probably because I never needed, but also I have read here and there of the requisite maintenance needed, and of problems similar to yours.
    I wish you well.

  • Calendar Event Notifications

    hi:
Has anyone taken a look at the Instant Messaging server with regards to Calendar Server event notification pop ups. (Event pop-ups are the number one user request here.)

  • RAID BATTERY CONDITIONING, HELPFUL INFO.

Point of Information: It took my MPRO 6 hours and 30 minutes (exactly) to complete the battery conditioning process, from a status of completely charged. It may not take this long if, for example, your battery is partially discharged. I spoke with an Apple Product Specialist via telephone who advised that there is no documented time parameters with regard to the conditioning process. He did advise that cache size, as related to the individual drives is a correlative variable. The Product Specialist also advised that I could carry on all normal work tasks while the conditioning process was active. He did state that I might notice slightly inhibited overall system performance until the conditioning process was completed, and the related write caches were re-enabled. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT not to reboot or shutdown your system during this process. If you do, the conditioning process will start all over from the beginning. For some unknown reason, my MacPro insists on 2 cycles of the aforementioned conditioning process resulting in about 13 hours total time allocated. After the first conditioning cycle is complete (battery shows charged and not conditioning), I have to shut the MacPro down, wait a few minutes and start it again. At that point, after a few minutes, the RAID Utility enters into another conditioning cycle. If I don't intentionally allow for the second conditioning cycle, it will automatically enter into the second conditioning cycle the next time I start the computer resulting in write caches being disabled and a drop in system performance prohibitive to editing and post-production workflow processes in FCPro/Motion, etc...
The entire conditioning process can be monitored in more detail (in conjunction with the Raid Utility) using the OS's System Profiler utility. Open the System Profiler utility and select the "Hardware RAID" option on the left. From the System Profiler, you can monitor whether the battery is charging or discharging. The following information is displayed in Syst. Profiler:
    Hardware RAID
    Battery Info:
    Firmware Revision: 1.0d19
    First Installed: 3/8/07 3:10 AM
    Last Date Conditioned: Unknown
    State: Working battery
    Fault: Normal battery operation
    Status:
    Charging: No
    Conditioning: Yes
    Connected: Yes
    Discharging: Yes
    Sufficient Charge: No
Here you can see that my RAID syst. is conditioning the battery; is currently discharging the battery, and there is not a sufficient charge. It is important to note that the system profiler does not automatically update it's own status real-time, i.e., you must refresh (command + R) the window to get the latest status.

I found that, at the end of the conditioning cycle, if I allow the battery to continue charging for 9 hours after system profiler and the raid utility indicate a full charge, the computer does not enter into a subsequent, charging cycle. Accordingly, I can only deduce that either:
    1. although both the system profiler and the raid utility indicated a full charge, the battery has not actually reached a full charge, and thus enters into a subsequent conditioning cycle upon the next restart / boot.
    2. The raid card battery is bad, or on the way out (not even a year old).
Apple Product Specialists (APS) have been very helpful, overall, and have shipped me a new replacement battery. While there are no specific battery replacement instructions available to the public, the APS I spoke with excerpted replacement instructions from the Apple Technician training manual and emailed me these. I have these available if anybody needs them. I will be happy to email them to you as I don't think I can post them anywhere here. You can find an email address to reach me under my profile.

  • Raid Utility Message - 72-Hour Battery

Anybody know anything new about Raid Message - I read there have been issues with this:
Controller Reports RAID system 72-Hour Battery Reserve unavailable - etc. etc.
Apparently this happens periodically when computer drains battery and recharges it. But I've been getting this message for 14 days now. I heard it takes a long time, but how long?
    Thanks,
    Jim

I think I found it. I believe it is reporting past events every time you reboot wanting you to take action.
The problem is with the UI on the RAID Utility. In the events pane you get the message about your battery being discharged posted on some date in the past. But how do you clear these events?
    Not obvious to me.
If you horizontally scroll the events pane you will see a Clear button on the far right.
Once you clear the events the status shows "Good" and I suspect it will not complain on the
    next reboot.

  • Intel Raid Vs Marvel Raid on Big Bang B3 Marshall (Non OS Drives) via win7 setup

I apologise in advance if this seems lazy but has anybody tried setting up RAID 1 mirroring of two non-essential data hard drives within Windows 7 64-bit as opposed to a bios setup?
I only need to mirror a games hard drive so as not to have to do manually backup the hard drive with Acronis software backup every other day or so.
I have a Acronis backup of the game hard drive as I am aware that creating a raid array on both drives will delete all data on both drives but I can restore my games software later.
As it was a non-essential raid array (non-OS drives) on my previous hardware setup for these two identical games drives before upgrading to the MSI big-band Marshall B3 I totally forgot to set up the raid whilst doing a fresh install of Windows 7 on a dual boot with a previously restored/Acronis universal restore of windows 7 which also had this raid array.
If that all makes sense I'm hoping you guys can put me in the right direction as to Intel on Marvel (I seem to remember reading in the past that Marvel Raid drivers had issues) preferences for a setup within Windows 7 64-bit rather than the bios setup which would mean starting from scratch which I'm not prepared to do on a non-essential, non-OS Raid array.
If however I was doing an essential OS drives Raid array then it's a no-brainer to do a BIOS setup with a fresh install.
    Any thoughts much appreciated, cheers

I don't think you are looking at the right areas.

Sonnet Tempo cards are compatible with most external SATA storage. However, external hard drives with USB 2.0/eSATA dual interface based on the Oxford Semiconductor OXU931DS storage controller chip may not be compatible with Mac OS X when connected via SATA. Known issues are kernel panics occurring when the drive is connected, or the drive not being recognized by the operating system.
Western Digital manufactures Desktop edition (WD Caviar, Caviar SE, Caviar SE16, and Raptor X) hard drives and Enterprise (RAID) Edition (WD RE, RE2, and Raptor) hard drives. Each type of hard drive is designed to work specifically in either a desktop computer environment, or connected to a RAID controller (hardware or software-based). If you intend to configure Western Digital drives in a RAID set, Sonnet and WD recommend using only their Enterprise edition hard drives. For more information, see this Western Digital FAQ.

Not everyone follows guidelines like they use to. Enterprise and RAID Edition drives - even Green RE4 series - not noise. You want a good drive enclosure with adequate cooling from air flow and fans. These are not silent and any drive noise is just background hum and noise that they are working.

There are dozens of reviews on drive storage. If noise is over riding then you aren't a candidate for RAID, but you are for SSD and Green, and would find SilentPCReview up your alley.

  • Windows 8.1 - Windows Couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service

I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers. Standard users are not able to log into the computer on the first try consistently. They receive the error message: Group Policy client service failed the sign-in access is
denied. They are stuck at the logon screen.
If an administrator logs in (local or domain), they can log in but get a black desktop with two error messages. The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable. The second error message is a popup
balloon. It states "Failed to Connect to a Windows service. Windows couldn't connect to the System Event Notification Service service."
When a standard user attempts to log in, event viewer records three warnings. They are listed in order from oldest to newest
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a critical notification event. -Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> failed a critical notification event. - Logged 9:14:44
The winlogon notification subscriber <Profiles> was unavailable to handle a notification event. - Logged 9:14:49
After a reboot, users still have the issue. I noticed that the user profile services and system event notification service are not running though their startup type is automatic. They start after a minute or two.

    Hi Joseph__Moody,
Based on your description ,I assume it is a domain environment .First of all ,I would suggest you to try to update all the machine .
"I have an issue that has been bothering me for a while on new 8.1 computers"
Do you mean all the Windows 8.1 machine share the same symptom or just a specific one ?Did the machine work correctly before ?When did the issue start to occur ?Have you installed any third party software before ?Can we operate the machine when we login with
    an administrator account ?
If the issue occurred with the specific machine :
"The first is Location is Not available - C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\Desktop is unavailable."
Please try the following suggestions if we can operate the machine when we login with the administrator account :
Open Windows Explorer and navigate to: C:\Windows\system32\config\systemprofile and verify if it has the Desktop folder there. If the folder doesn`t exit, we can copy from C:\users\Default\Desktop location(This folder is hidden by default).
We also can try the following suggestions to have a troubleshoot :
1.Run "sfc /scannow"or "dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth" to check the health of the system files.
2.Perform a full scan with an antivirus software.
3."They start after a minute or two."
I suspect there is a third party service confilct here. Please perform a clean boot to verify whether there is a third party conflict here .
How to perform a clean boot in Windows
    https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/929135
If the issue occurred with multiple machines in the domian ,I would suggest you to check whether you have configured any logon scripts and logon group policy .We can remove the machine from the domain to have  a troubleshoot .
If the issue occurred recently ,we can perform a system restore to recover the machine to a previous normal point.
    Best regards

  • Raid Utility Error Message "raid utility is not supported on this computer"

I am not doing anything that I know of, but Raid Utility keeps opening up on its own, and a message pops up multiple times a day telling me "raid utility is not supported on this computer"
Anyone have any idea how to fix this?

Network startup is if you want to start your macbook using a network drive.
Keep your startup settings at your current drive.
Raid utility doesn't apply to you since you only have one hard drive installed, unless you installed another hard drive in your optical bay.
Fibre Channel is another type of hard drive connection via network connection.
You can't access things you don't have installed in your macbook.  Those are there in case you decide to have a network drive start up options, a raid configuration of a fibre channel network drive.

Lion 10.7.2 On both mac book pro and iMac, both with Lion 10.7.2, obtain repeated iCal event notifications from calendar or address book.  Cannot turn these off.  They repeat several times per session and every time computer is used.  How to diagnose this?

First, uninstall "SuperTV" (whatever that is) according to the developer's instructions. It isn't working and it's filling the log with noise.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
    Launch the Console application.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time when you had the problem. Post the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
Post the log text, please, not a screenshot. If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message. When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
PLEASE DO NOT INDISCRIMINATELY DUMP THOUSANDS OF LINES FROM THE LOG INTO A MESSAGE. If you do that, I will not respond.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Edit it out by search-and-replace in a text editor before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.
