Mask on PDF

Hi everybody,
I do have a nice pages - document with a so called "mask", a picture with blurred edges. Now I want to export this document into a PDF file. Then the egdes of the mask are unfortunately not blurred anymore. How can I avoid this?

This is to ensure that the pdf will fit to the given specification, and also this is one of the requirements in our current project. We've already used print to Adobe PDF process before using Acrobat 7 and we did not encounter this problem. But when we upgrade to Acrobat 8, this problem occur.

An alignment problem of format mask in PDF output

Hi,
I'm testing iAS10g on WIN2000.
Both the Reports Developer and Reports Server versions are 9.0.4.2.
The database character set is UTF8,
and I'm using Adobe asian font pack in the [PDF] section of the uifont.ali config file to print Chinese characters.
The PDF reports run well except one problem:
The right align field attribute seems fail due to the format mask.
The right aligned number field with format mask NNN,NNN,NN0
overlaps with its right field when its value is greater
than 999 (when the comma appears).

Excel takes it's format from the regional settings of the PC. It is a *** to get around this mandatory Excel feature. You can add a single quote in front of the value, i.e. '99-99-9999. Excel treats this as a text value.

Problems saving/exporting with Opacity Mask in Illustrator CS6

Hi, I'm very new to illustrator and self taught. I'm having issues exporting a file with opacity masks to PDF. I have a file with three layers, each with a opacity mask. When I save the file as a PDF, the opacity masks seem to disappear (or they are flattened). I've tried creating a new document and creating it again with no luck. Where am I going wrong? I just want it to look like it does in Illustrator when its exported! Heres the file: Dropbox - BB Logo.ai
Ideally I'd like to export it to a JPEG or PNG whilst maintaining the opacity masks to give the logo texture. Any suggestions?

You'll need to outline the text and provide the mask image.
Apart from that: looks to me like a problem with resolution. There's a structure in your exported file, but it's smoothed.
Without knowing what exactly you did step by step it's difficult to solve this problem.

Reduce image size in pages by cropping ??

Hello,
I created a pages document with a lot of masked images in it. the resulting pdf file is massive. As described in the Pages manual, I tried the reduce the image file size (format menu) and the document file size (file menu). But instead of reducing the size by deleting the the parts of the images that are covered by the mask (as written in the manual), it reduces the image resolution, which I don't want.
Question: How can I reduce the image file size by cropping and not by reducing the resolution.
I learnt a lot today in other forums on how to edit quartz filters, so I know how to manipulate resolution afterwards for pdf's for mail and print. Cropping images before inserting them into Pages I don't find a real option. Thank's for yor help.

I reported it to Apple via the feedback button. I also added a little wishlist for the next version.
I think if Pages would crop the excess parts of an image covered by a mask during the pdf export would solve the problem already because imho these not visible parts are often the reason for the massive pdf file sizes. The images are completely embedded and masked in pdf's.
Does anybody know a pdf tool that does that? I tried PDFshrink and PDFpen so far, but they both don't.
Would also be cool to have an Automator action that adjusts resolution via edited quartz filters and crops the invisible stuff off ...

Problem Saving PDF with Opacity Masks in Illustrator CS3

I'm having trouble exporting an Illlustrator CS3 file to PDF. I have two layers in the the .ai file that have opacity masks applied. When I save the file as a PDF, the two layers with opacity masks seem to disappear (or they are flattened down to white/100% transparency.) They do not show on screen nor when printing. I've tried opening the saved PDF in Illustrator to investigate, and the layers are still there, but with no opacity mask. Where am I going wrong? I've tried a new file with a simple shape and a simple opacity mask, and it exports fine to PDF. So something is wrong with my file set up, but I can't pinpoint what! I have also tried exporting to various versions of PDF, and nothing works. Help!

Not sure what's going on in your file, but it's definately having a problem with the Steaks layer. Trying to release the clipping mask and ungrouping all the layers is having a problem so it might have something to do with the way the streaks layer was built.
Using your file I replaced the streaks layer and put a starburst that's clipped to the icon shape. I've attached two files. One is for Illustrator CC so you can retain the gradient fill on the stroke which is only available in newer versions of Illustrator. The other has the starburst I created expanded so that you can open the file and retain the startburst look.

IDCS3 picture not masked properly by stroke in PDF

I have an indesignCS3 generated pdf, where the pictures are framed by a white stroke of 1pt. When I'm outputting to plate in places a row of pixels of the picture is printing outside the stroke. Its affecting about a third of the pictures in a 24page document.
Examining the pdf with Pitstop it appears that the picture is masked to coincide with the outside of the stroke line, I can't imagine the designer would have created the frame independently to the picture box, but wonder if anyone else has come across this?

What does the designer have to say about it?
Can you test this with a file of your own creation, setting the picture box to a white stroke and checking in Pitstop?

Parts of masked line art and text appearing in PDF and (some) in InDesign files

Hello Adobe community,
I was wondering if someone can shed any light on an issue (or possibly 2 issues) I am having. I am using CC on a Mac. Software versions are Illustrator CC 17.1, InDesign 10.1.0.71, Acrobat 11.0.07.
Firstly in InDesign there is some screen residue appearing on the frame edge. The problem seems to be sporadic and not on every page of a 100pg+ document. The residue is appearing from a vector file of a map and this part of the map is masked with a compound path in Illustrator. The following is a screen snapshot of the Indesign file. (The little red arrow is not part of the file - it's just pointing out the problem)
The placed Illustrator file looks like this. The following snapshots shows the .ai file, the isolated compound path and outline mode showing what is happening beyond the compound path.
The horizontal arrow in the above (outline) snapshot shows part of the art that then occurs in the pdf. The vertical arrow shows where the compound path begins.
When I make a pdf not only does the fine line occur but part of the art beyond the compound path occur.
First arrow indicates fine line. Second arrow indicates the part of the masked artwork that is showing.
If anyone could suggest what may be causing this issue, that would be tremendous. I also cannot understand why this happens with just some of the masked artwork.

You should try to persuade Illy to update to 18.1.1.
You may try to restart the Creative Cloud application by quitting and relaunching it.

Image Mask Error Message when Reducing Size of PDF

With my Mac, I embed jpg images in Microsoft Word documents, save them as pdf's, and reduce them. Size reduction often fails, with the error message "The PDF document contained image masks that were not downsampled". Jpegs don't have masks, so I have no idea how to fix this problem, and an extensive google search was of no assistance.

Use PNG images instead use an application such as Graphics Converter, Fireworks to convert to .png from .jpg.
Will have much better images that do not degrade each time they are opened and most often they end up being same size than jpeg's
Jpeg unless you save as a special type is a Lossy format and each time is open (and decompressed) then closed (and then compressed) losses detail
Just open and magnify a jpeg after its been open 5-20 times you notice an out of focus halo looking similar looking to water spilled on paper wil pen ink on it. And it get progressively worse. PNG on the other hand is not lossy and if the original is saved as png never degrade even when reduced in size or or expand within reason in size. I've being dealing with photos screenshots, images and other for years. Despite what other may say on this list may say if you want an image with little trouble for years of service save as png.

PDF's with images open with dark (mask) overlay..not true in Explorer...how to change setting?

Mask Box Lines Show Up in PDF

When I export my Pages document as a PDF, it ends up with a gray outline of the rectangles I used to mask the images in the document. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

It seems to be similar but s far as I know, it's different.
In the OP's question, the lines was appearing on screen, not on printing.

May you check how it behaves if you remove the transparent background?
As old users like me perfectly know, when a user guide states: the program may open Photoshop files we must understand: "it may open them but maybe with some drawbacks" or "it may open some of them".

I am making a document in InDesign with many linked pdf as graphics and charts. When i export the InDesign document to PDF it says it has some Image Mask that were not downsampled. How can i tell which of my PDF has an image mask?

Hi,
placing an image wich is not entirely displayed in an image area cause an image mask.
See attached screengrab, the second picture (with the brown area) will create an image mask, in InDesign as in any other software.

How to show masked links in PDF when printing?

Ive got a PDF where some hyperlinks are masked behind certain words. For digital use of this document this is fine. However when printing I would like to have the full link to be printed (eg as a comment or on top of the word which contains the link). Is there a possibility to do this with Acrobat?

How to display masked links in PDF when printing?

I have several PDF's which contain hyperlinks masked behind words. I would give readers of this document to print out the PDF. However, as the links are masked they wouldnt be able to use the document in print form. Is there any way to have these links shown when printing?

Working with old PDF files - Release Clipping Masks

Hi Everyone....Please Help Me!
I am regularly required to work with old pdf files for my company, which I have to open in Illustrator to amend and update (we don't have access to the original .ai files).
Whenever I start to work on these files I have to spend ages just unconnecting the elements of the artwork, usually by right clicking and choosing "release clipping mask"
Is there a way to just disconnect everything when you open up an old pdf document in Illustrator?

Always keeping a careful eye on the effects of released clipping masks, the process can be accelerated using the keyboard shortcuts rather than hunt-and-click.
Open the PDF.
Ctrl/Cmd+A (Select All)
Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt+7 (Object > Clipping Mask > Release) Hold down Ctrl/Cmd+Alt/Opt and tap the 7 key repeatedly to initially release all top-level masks, then continue through the levels of nesting that may be present. With Show Bounding Box and Show Edges active it's easy to see when the releasing has stopped...usually only a few levels.
Deselect, then find one of the orphaned mask objects, which will have a fill and stroke of None. Select it, then choose Object > Select > Same > Fill & Stroke to select all the orphaned mask objects.
Delete.

Export to pdf - mask is still selectable

is there a way to apply the mask finally?

In illustrator select the image and the background and choose rasterize.
If you don't want people to be able to edit or select objects within your pdf, then turn on security in acrobat for that .pdf.
