Masking Effects
Hi. Is it possible to use the solarize effect on an object within a video without affecting the background? Basically i want to have a person covered with the solarize effect and the background to be unaffected. Is this even possible? I'd much appreciate some feedback on this query.
[Please choose only a short description for the thread title.]

First of all, it is easier in After Effects. That said .....
Possible? Yes. Using masks.
Creating the masks? That can be difficult.
If the person stands out significantly from the background in a way that you can create a mask based on a combination of garbage matte and Luma values, you might be able to use levels to create a black forground and a white background, or the other way around. Then use that as a track matte.
But it isn't easy and most video isn't shot in a way that will work for you.
Most people would say to rotoscope the person away from the background, frame by frame. A very time consuming process.
Depending on what you really want to do, you might be able to apply a collection of masks and feather them so that they cover the person in a rather general way, approximately covering them.

Simple Mask Effect not working in Flash 8 Pro
I recently updated to Flash 8 pro.I'm having a wiered
problem.First I was having problem applying masking.I applied a
masking effect in a movie clip and when view the movie instead of
showing the effect it shows my masking shape that is a
rectangle.When i move the play head in the movie it shows me the
effect, im trying to achieve but when I hit ctrl+enter to test the
movie, it does not work.Then another thing was I tried to apply a
Fade in effect and even that does not work.Any suggestion would be
appreciated.As im having these problems in the player, so I assume
there is something wrong with the player.I have Flash Player 9
installed.I unistalled and re installed a new copy,Still did'nt
help. I amHi,
Are you sure that you set your Mask layer to a Mask? Double
click the icon int he right of the Layer name and set the Layer
type to a mask.
And regarding the Fade, I guess you may miss some thing, let
me know the steps you have done to create your Fade effect?
hope this helps -
I created a simple mask effect using CS3 Pro on WIn XP. When
I run the animation in Flash, the effect works perfectly but when I
publish an SWF file, the mask effect does not appear. Strangely
enough, I sent the FLA file to someone who has the same version of
Flash as me. He opened up the file, published an SWF and his mask
effect worked fine. Am I missing something here???It sounds to me like you are not uploading all the files. The navigation for example needs the feed.xml file.
What FTP application are you using to upload?
Putting effects like drop shadows and frames increases the page file size and slows download.
Its better to take a screenshot of the image and replace the original with this JPEG. See...

How do you make a motion tween, mask effect and shape tween, with a flash website?
More of less, I will have three seperate pages for the motion tween, mask effect and shape tween... would you make the seperately, in a different scene, as a symbol or on the same scene with the website.
It's not clear what you are after since you start talking about separate pages for the three things, and then ask about how best to put them together. If they are going to be separate they can't be together.
If your intention is to have these three things in one Flash file, ut as separate parts of it, then I would have each within a symbol and have each symbol within the same scene (I don't use multiple scenes). -
Hi everyone,
I have been trying to use the Mask effect to cover up a list of attendees at my webinar I do not want to appear. The section of the screen I want to obscure is motionless and appears and disappears at a few portions in the video. I am able to insert a mask and pixelate a part of the screen but am not able to time it. There seem to be no controls to time an effect, when it appears and disappears. Can Premiere Pro do this?
PeterYou keyframe the properties of the effect (not the mask) to full (or whatever) when the mask is needed and 0 if its not needed.

Keyframe shape mask effects?
Can you keyframe shape mask effects?
I'm trying to keyframe a simple shape mask effecting the outside area: -86 exposure to 0 exposure, meaning that first, inside the mask all is seen, while outside llittle is seen, then move to 0 exposure where all is seen. But clicking keyframes next to shape mask (below Color Correction 1) doesn't work. I input -86, click keyframe then move to where I want and input 0, but that's how the whole clip appears with no gradation changes.
Any suggestions?I created some animatable masks (keyframeable on-screen control points). It's three keying effects: a single 4 point mask (like the one that comes with FCPX), a two 4 point set (essentially an 8-point), and a four 4 point set (essentially a 16-point.)
Please watch the video for best use guides. Most of the time, layering on 2 or more single 4 point mask shapes is quite addequte to do most of your masking needs.

These effects are free. You can use them any way you like, but please don't redistribute (or sell) them -- direct people to the above link instead. -
Mask effect offset for scaled or reframed footage.
I would not have expected this problem to still exist since it was noted in the previous version. I'll have to try the work around of using an adjustment layer mentioned here Adobe SpeedGrade CC - Mask follows tracking, but effects within mask do not.
Please let me know if there is a fix I missed.
Thanks,
RobAdobe has known about this issue since the beginning of CC, and they have yet to address it. Until they do, Speedgrade is pretty useless.

Accordion style image masking effect
Hi i'm trying to create a making effect that on a RollOver i
expand the mask of an image horizontally to the full widht of the
image while "collapsing" the mask of other masked images displayed
along side of it.
This effect is sort of similar to the accordion style menu
and the menu icon that OSX has. The developed the attached code but
it is flawed in that the sequence isn't moving as syncronized as it
should as the clip whose width is expanding seems to be crashing
into the other clips along side it giving an over lapping
appearance for a while until it has finished expanding. Can any one
shed some light into another approach/ technique i can adopt to get
this effect right?sorry friends for bottering u but i am still not getting it
.I think i understood the basic as but when i try myself it doesn't
come out.i am sending this .fla file .Please go through it and tell
where i am getting wrong.

Does a Clipping Mask effect just one layer?
Hello everyone ... Level: Newbie OS: Win7 64bit Ia: Cs6
Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
But I'm stuck... again.
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it becuase I am not getting behind the Mask?
(Let me apologise to those that HATE it when Newbies follow lessons/tuts and who HATE it when we come here to ask for help. I'm doing my best to learn and to find answers on my own before heading here for help)
Please lmk if you would be better able to help me with pictures of my layers and the art. Thanx so much for your time!!Thanks as well for your patience with me! It can be difficult to communicate this way, but all we can do is try our best.
As for the issue regarding the author's "main shape"...
Here I have an object with a gradient mesh:
If you follow the directions in step 3 of the tutorial, the author creates a duplicate by going to Object > Path > Offset Path.
And then inputs "0" for the offset value.
I shifted my original gradient-meshed object down a little bit, and there you can see is the simple shape that you were seeing in the author's image. Then they just filled it with that gold gradient and scaled it down.
And as for clipping masks...
As I mentioned before, a clipping mask will only affect the objects and groups you had selected when you created it. For exhaustive information about clipping masks, see this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/clipping-masks.html
I hope this was helpful! Good luck! -
Clipping Mask Effects in Fireworks CS4?
Hello everyone,
I was initially trained on Adobe Illustrator, and over time
have gotten very pretty comfortable with it. Not too long ago I
started making mock ups in Illustrator, and would use the crop tool
to export particular pieces (buttons and banners) of my mock up
into Dreamweaver tables.
But I recently got CS4, and now I'm all screwed up!
Unlike CS3, CS4 Illustrator does not appear to have the crop
area function. I can no longer export select pieces of my artwork.
I recently found out that this 'crop area' feature exists in
Fireworks CS4, so lately I've been trying to learn fireworks.
The problem I have with fireworks though, is that there
doesn't seem to be a clipping mask feature. I did stumble upon
something called 'group as mask' under the modify menu. But I don't
understand it's function, as it works nothing at all like
Illustrators clipping mask.
Clipping mask is such a useful design feature, and I can't
bear the thought of doing without it.
I'm relatively new to graphic and web design, so here's to
hoping some experienced users can help me out with this!
Cheers,
Cory
PS: Please don't tell me the solution to all this is
photoshop! So tired of switching applications :)CoryPatrick wrote:

I doubt you'll find many - if any - telling you the answer is
Photoshop
in this forum. ;-)
The term clipping mask isn't really part of the FW
vocabulary, but FW
works very well with vectors and that is pretty much what a
clipping
mask is - a path used to mask part of an image.
FW can mask objects using vectors or bitmaps. Here's some
instructions
to create a simple vector mask.
Open an image in FW.
Select the Rectangle tool from the Vector tool area of the
Tools panel.
Draw a rectangle.
position it where you want the mask to be.
Cut the rectangle (Ctrl+X or Command+X for Mac)
Select the image using the Pointer tool.
Go to Edit > Paste as Mask.
Your image is now masked by a vector. Both objects remain
editable.
There is much more you can do; this is just a simple example.

Need help creating a "mask" effect in swing
So I'm making the visual part of my connect four program. I'm trying to create the effect of dropping the piece from the top of the board to the bottom. I use the timer swing to create the animation and the animation works fine. My problem is to make the piece seem like it's between the board whereas right now the piece is in front of the board.
To see what I mean...here's the board without any pieces
Please click --> https://students.washington.edu/porrkice/connect4.jpg
Here's the board with a piece in the process of "dropping" into the bottom
Please click --> https://students.washington.edu/porrkice/connect43.jpg
The way I "drew" the board is this, and the piece is this...
public void paintComponent(Graphics the_g) {
super.paintComponent(the_g);
Graphics2D g2d = (Graphics2D) the_g;
This draws the board
g2d.setColor(Color.yellow);
g2d.fillRect(10, 10, my_board.getBoardsWidth() * 100, my_board.getBoardsHeight() * 100);
g2d.setColor(Color.white);
for (int i = 0; i < my_board.getBoardsWidth(); i++) {
for (int j = 0; j < my_board.getBoardsHeight(); j++) {
g2d.fillOval(MARGIN + i * 100, MARGIN + j * 100, 80, 80);
This is to draw piece
g2d.setColor(Color.red);
g2d.fillOval(MARGIN + my_x * 100, my_y, 80, 80);
}So basically, I just draw a rectangle, then draw a bunch of circles on top of it, then a circle that represents the piece...
And what I want is when the piece is dropping, when it goes pass the white circles which represents holes on the board, the yellow part between the holes will be on top of the piece
Hopefully I made my problem clear enough and someone could lend me a hand.

i want to create a blurred transparent layer that will sit
over a sequence of photographs. the idea is to have a piece cut out
of the blur layer (which will look like a sharp part of the
photograph) I want to move this around ... How do i do this ...any
ideasI have a sequence of photographs.
I want to overlay a blurred transparent layer with a shape
cut out of it. I would like to animate this blurred layer so that
aspects of the photographs underneath become visible as this layer
moves over them.
The key is keeping the photographs 'intact' allowing this
'blur layer' to do all the work.
Any ideas ?? -
Is AI's Unsharp Mask effect dependable?
I make a ton of newspaper ads in AI and it's the photos that slow me down the most.
I usually place a linked image and when the size is set, I edit it in PS, size it and sharpen it.
I was thinking it'd be nice to just plop the photo in skip the PS step and sharpen it right in AI.
Anyone use this?It's not that high but not that low. I churn a bunch of these out every day.
It's for newsprint. They're gonna mess something up on each anyway when they print.
But I am interested in having my photos 'pop' as much as possible.
But it's not like they're all high quality posters or anything.
