Masking One Students Identity in a Crowded Classroom Scene

Masking a Persons Identity in a Crowded Scene
Hello, I have footage of high school classrooms that are part of a study by Harvard University and the University of Michigan.  In most cases we have permission to show all of the faces, for a few videos we do not.  I need to mask certain faces, or blur them so the student cannot be recognized.  A few days ago I thought I would be doing this in Premiere Pro - now, for some odd reasons, I'd like to try it in AE.
I was told that I could:
"For each shot, use motion tracking on a person's face, apply that motion-tracking data to a solid layer, use that layer as an adjustment layer, and apply the Mosaic effect to the adjustment layer. This gives you a rectangular blocky/pixelated region over the person's face. If you want to be more refined, you can draw a mask on the adjustment layer to match the shape of the face and get into more detailed rotoscoping."
I have read up on Adjustment layers, the Mosaic effect, and Tracking and stabilizing motion.  But I can't seem to figure out how to pull this all together and make it work.
Does anyone have, or know of, a tutorial or video that includes a step-by-step process?  I'm under the gun and I just can't this information - I'm probably using the wrong terminology in my searches.
Any/All help would be greatly appreciated.

Again, thanks.  I need to be much more literal.  I was searching on 'Hiding Identity in After Effects' and the like.  Once I get better with the AE terms and more comfortable with the process I'll start honing in faster.  Today you really saved my behind - thank you, thank you.

  • More then one student license on same account

Hello. Can i have more then one student license on same account. The 60% of thingy. One for home, one for work and one for the notebook. They may run simultaneously because of the friends using the computer. All 3 computers will use same account name and password.

You may install software on up to two computers. These two computers can be Windows, Mac OS, or one each.
If you install on a third computer, it will request you to de-activate on the other two computers.  You can then reactivate one of the previous two computers, and use Creative Cloud apps on it.
If you regularly need to use the Creative Cloud on more than two computers then it would be best to purchase an additional subscription.  This is the same licensing btw which we have for our prepetual product.  An advantage though for Creative Cloud over the perpetual product is that you can install on Mac and Windows with the same subscription!
As it stands, the EULA states that you can install it on up to two computers at a time, however, you cannot use applications on those computers simultaneously. This is the case even when you are not using the same application

A particular network user can't login to a mac in a classrom but other network users can. Then the network user can login to other identical macs in same classroom. Anyone seen this before? It has happen twice. Two different teachers in two different classrooms entering the correct user name and passwords and computer won't allow them to login. Then they try in different computers in same classroom and have no problem login.

Yes. I can login with a test user. And any other network user can login as well to this particular mac. Actually the mac has bootcamp and boots into either mac or windows. The same user entering the same login username and password can login into the windows side, but not the mac side.
I had this same issue last semester in another classroom, another mac and a different teacher. This summer I reformatted and imaged that mac and I asked that teacher to login today to that reimagened mac and she had no problem today doing so.

Welcome to the US!  I think you can just take your ID card to the Apple store or shop online : http://store.apple.com/us/browse/campaigns/education_pricing
the site has all the info for eligibility and available items for purchase -- I think you can type in your school to see if on list of approved schools. I think the ID checking is rather benign. discounts are modest from what I recall.

you can't use scenes in html5 projects.
that's also no significant limitation because there's never a situation (afaik) where you need to use scenes.  they are strictly a convenience for designers.
i don't know any programmers that use scenes.

  • How can I mask one layer which is enough for other layers?

    Hi,
I want to know how can I mask an image on one layer which should enogh for other movie clips. Like the following ...
    1) First layer ........................ Actionscript
    2) Mask layer ....................... Rounded rectange with some design
    2) Image layer ...................... Best image (as a background for all other movie clips)
    3) Movie Clips layer .............. 10 Movie clips (which are like slides and will be act like one webpage each)
What I want is the mask layer (Layer 2) should be enogh for all the movie clips in layer 3. No need to mask in each movie.
I tried in the same sequence but it did not work for me.
    How can I do that?
    Thanks.

mouse down (and hold down) on the movieclip layer (at the left of your timeline) and slowly move the mouse up until you see that the movieclip layer is indenting to indicate it's going to be masked.

  • Masking one layer with efect with another layer

I got two layers/video clips. First is original video- obiect on background. Second is a black & white image (entire obiect is white, and entire background is black). Now i want to blur only background of original image using second clip as a ?mask?.  I'm a begginer in AE and i still didnt find the solution. Help please..

It sounds like you need to learn how to use a layer as a Track Matte.
Duplicate your background layer, apply blur to it.  Then place your black and white matte layer above the new layer.  Set the Track Matte value of the blurred layer to Luma Matte.

Hi I'm having trouble which something which is probably extremely basic..
I've brought in a comp from Illustrator, created shapes from Vector Layers and now I am attempting to mask 1 path within the Shape Layer.
When I attempt to mask the path it masks the whole layer... Can anybody help me with this?
    Cheers in advance,

Apply a Merge oprator and draw your path within the shape group. Otherwise duplicate the layer, delete the other items and use a mask. Several ways to go about this...

  • What formatting for external hard drives for my photo students?

I teach digital photography. Our classroom Macs are a mix of Intel and PPC (iMac 20", G5s). My students typically either come with a Mac laptop, buy one while here, or soon after they leave. Some (few!) have a PC laptop or will leave to go home to a PC laptop.
I've been buying one external harddrive per student (with FW800, FW400, USB 2.0, 250 GB) from macsales.com for students to put their digital photos on while here and when they leave my 12 wk. course. I encourage them if they have a Mac laptop to partition their external drive to have one partition for backing up their boot drive, one for their photos.
In the classroom, they may be hooking up their external drive to a PPC or Intel Mac.
What recommendations can you give for what formatting they should be using for their external drives? Intel, for PPC, or...MS-DOS (if they go to a PC)? (One student told me that her external drive which was formated for PPC last summer now won't show up on her MacBook Pro.)
I realize they can only use the FW800 on a few Macs (including 17" MacBook Pro, Mac Pro), and should not be using USB 2.0 for a drive they hope to boot a Mac with. I've heard formatting and using MS-DOS is very unstable (for PCs at least).
    Tips, please?

I've been buying one external harddrive per student
    (with FW800, FW400, USB 2.0, 250 GB) from
macsales.com for students to put their digital photos
on while here and when they leave my 12 wk. course. I
encourage them if they have a Mac laptop to partition
their external drive to have one partition for
backing up their boot drive, one for their photos.
That's impressive and very user-supportive. At work, our students have space on our server to backup/store their work for the semester but are greatly encouraged to backup their stuff with either Cds or DVDs (and we don't supply those). If they use a personal machine, they are responsible for their own backups of their system.
In the classroom, they may be hooking up their
external drive to a PPC or Intel Mac.
For data, the traditional APM formatted drive work with both.
What recommendations can you give for what formatting
they should be using for their external drives?
Intel, for PPC, or...MS-DOS (if they go to a PC)?
(One student told me that her external drive which
was formated for PPC last summer now won't show up
    on her MacBook Pro.)
As I mentioned earlier, an Intel Mac can boot from an APM formatted drive although this may or may not be the best solution. Unfortunately with partitioning via Disk Utility (and perhaps other tools as well - I've not investigated this yet), every partition must be of the same scheme GUID or APM.
The most important reason for backups (IMHO) is to safeguard personal work. The OS can be re-installed anytime and settings reconfigured if need be. Since the APM scheme can be used by both Intels and PPC for data, I would go with APM. Bootable or not, their important data will be backed up.
(I don't know why one student had a problem but it shouldn't be related to the partition scheme.)
For a bootable system/backup, I use Carbon Copy Cloner from Mike Bombich. Ideally, so long as there is space, I create a restorable image of a fresh OS install and put it away for a rainy day. I then clone my entire internal drive to the external (APM). Over the last year, I've been able to boot from it on my original iMac CD as well as have a hard copy of my work.
Once backed up, I would later use the option to only copy changed files instead of re-doing the entire drive. That was a feature in the PPC version of the app (which will run under Intel) although I haven't tried the latest universal version (3.0 beta). There are a number of other applications that can perform backups/cloning as well.

  • Horizontal mapping + embedded one-to-one problem

    Hi,
this message corresponds to the article "Embedded One-to-One mapping
problem". But this article is more exactly then the first without less
    unnessary information.
I got an abstract super-class Person which is mapped horizontal.
    Student inherits from Person.
Person contains an attribute called location(instance of Class Location)
which should be mapped "embedded one-to-one".
Since Person is mapped horizontal no table will be used for Person.
I get following exception when running mappingtool on action "buildSchema"
    kodo.jdbc.meta.MappingInfoNotFoundException: No mapping information was
    found for "xxx.yyy.zzz.persistence.jdo.business.Location.lat"
I think Kodo tries to map the field "location" since the field is declared
as embedded. But it can not embed the field since Person is horizontal
mapped and no table for Person exists where the corresponding field of
Location could be placed in. Also it is not possible to set the "embedded"
attribute in the subclass Student for the field "location" because it must
    be specified in the superclass.
    Can you help me ?
    Thanks a lot,
    Felix

  • Applying a mask and cropping so exports in Flash

I created a Photoshop CS4 file with about 10 layers which I placed in a group.  I've applied a vector mask to the whole group so all of the pictures are masked in an identical manner.  I also cropped the group to the same size.
When I import this file into Flash CS4, all of the layers are showing up at their original sizes (instead of the size I cropped the group to), and the mask isn't being applied.
Can someone explain the proper way to get this layered file into Flash CS4 with the cropped size and mask intact?
    Thanks for the help.

I'm not an expert in photoshop, but I've tried everything I know to apply the mask to multiple layers and was not able to do so, and still maintain separate layers. I selected all the layers first and tried to apply a mask, and that didn't work. Then I grouped all the layers and was still unable to apply a single mask to all layers. The only way I was able to apply a mask to all layers was to flatten the image. Given that you're importing it into flash, I'm assuming that you're animating the various layers to acheive a certain effect. If that's the case, then flattening the image to apply the mask to the entire document at once doesn't make sense. If you're using the entire image without the need for layers, then of course you can flatten the image and then use the mask to make a selection and clear the unwanted parts of the image.
I have to imagine that there's a way to do what you're asking, but with my level of experience, I'm unable to find a way to make it happen. There may be a way to export the file to flash with the layer mask intact, or perhaps there's a way to apply the mask to all layers at once, but I'm unable to find it. I would apply it to each layer individually which may take a few more minutes, as it's the only way I can find.
The only other option I can think of, is to place the entire psd file in a flash document directly. CS5 allows this in After Effects and Premiere Pro, which may keep the mask intact. I don't know enough about Flash to know if that's possible as well, but it's worth a shot.
As a final suggestion, maybe you can do all of your annimation and effects in After Effects, then just save it as a Flash file. I've done this before and it's allowed me to create rather robust annimations and effects without having to learn the more complicated aspects of creating a flash document from scratch.
Hopefully one of the CS5 gurus will see this and point the way to a quicker solution, but this is all I know to do at the moment.
Best of luck with your project.
P.S. To answer the last part of your question, yes, I can only imagine that as a workaround, you can make a selection from the mask and clear the unwanted sections of each layer, and then bring it into Flash.

  • *Can ARD restrict students from using particular programs?

I am a new high school digital arts teacher running ARD 3 in my classroom and have trouble with students being distracted with the internet. Is there any way to restrict students from using Explorer and Safari temporarily (and still keep the network connection) so they can focus on their work and not on their social lives?
Is it possible? If not, any suggestions about what I should do or use?
    Thanks! ___________________UPDATE:
    ____>
Thankfully, I received the following sugesstion from a helpful user.
Can someone explain this in layman's terms?
I've never used UNIX but am willing to try.
"If you don't mind messing with the firewall settings of your clients, you could try something like this: send (as root) the unix command
ipfw add 2005 deny tcp from any to any 80 out xmit en0
This should stop any request being sent via port 80, the most common port for web servers. You might want to check that there is no rule already at 2005 by issuing a 'ipfw all' to get the list of rules in force. If there is, use a different number.
To reset the firewall, either reboot the clients (which loads the default firewall rules, without your changes) or send (as root)
    ipfw delete 2005
(or whatever number you used. You could save these two commands as Saved Tasks to have them ready whenever you need them."
Clarity would be much appreciated. Thanks All!

    Hello Elle,
I hear you. I'm a Graphic Communications teacher that had the very same problem. I solved it by getting rid of Explorer and turning on the parental controls in Safari within the 10.4 student permissions. Then I entered web sites into Safari that pertain to the subject of my class work. After about a week of student complaining the students accepted the fact their is no personal web surfing and now focus their attention on their work. And once again students that come into my classroom before and after school work on their projects instead of myspace.com, etc. Keep in mind the students still have access to the internet, but only to the web sites you setup.
Another way of doing it if you want to give student free time to surf the web is to setup two sets of permissions, if you are familar with this. One set gives students access to the browsers and the other does not. The permission file for controlling student access is located in /Library/Managed Preferences/in my case a folder named student/com.apple.applicationaccess.plist. Create two folders on your computer and put a copy of each preference file into them. Using Remote Desktop, logout from each of the student computers and then using the Copy Items command and Place items in: copy the permission file of your choice to: /Library/Managed Preferences/in my case a folder named student. When the students login they will be controlled by the permission file you just sent.
I'm also very good at altering system files that prevent students from tampering with the way I setup their computers. Let me know if I can assist you with other problems, or the above problem if you should have further questions.
    From a fellow teacher,

  • Multiple iPads & One Account

I work at a school that is considering using iPads next year. If I have 40 of them, can I sync them all to the same iTunes account? I really don't want to track separate accounts for each.
This isn't intended to get around paying for apps, they cost what they cost. From an administration standpoint I want one account to update them all if it's possible.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

I found these two paragraphs in the link you provided which answered my question for the most part. I just need to read a bit more about "Program Facilitators".
"I’m at a K–12 institution, and we use carts to synchronize content from a single iTunes library to multiple devices used by students in the classroom. Can I use this method to distribute purchased apps to my students’ devices?
Yes, if your Program Facilitator agrees to terms and conditions when he or she signs up for the ASVPP. Apple agrees to permit you to use a single code to sync an app to multiple devices, up to the number of codes you have purchased (instead of having to redeem a separate code for each license), provided that you agree to the terms. You should verify the number of apps that the Program Facilitator purchased, and tell the Program Facilitator how many devices were synced with the app.
Can you give me an example of using a single code to sync an app to multiple devices?
For example, using this optional means of distribution, an institution with 100 devices could purchase 100 copies of an app and receive 100 app-specific codes and URLs. The institution could then distribute a smaller number of codes (for example, one code to each of five classrooms). These codes would be redeemed through the iTunes library of the computer used to synchronize the students’ devices. If each of the five classes has 20 devices, then, after syncing, 100 devices would each have the app even though only five of the app-specific codes are used. The remaining 95 codes may not be used but should be retained for accounting and audit purposes."
