Masks in CS5

Has anyone noticed a bug in CS5 where in spite of having the preference to preserve mask vertex count option checked, it is not doing it?  I have triple checked having this preference set and I still find when I add a mask point that to a mask that I have animated, the vertex count is changing at every key.  It is really frustrating.
Additionally, is AE ever going to catch up with every other software package and have point based feather control for masks?  I really thought CS5 would have that.  Instead the Mocha that ships with it has it, but when I am working in conjunction with the rotobrush I really need to have that control inside of the program.  (if this has been added, someone please correct me and make my day )

If per-vertex feathering is important to you, should do two things:
- Enter a feature request.
- Check out PV Feather.
If you think that the preference for preserving the vertex count isn't working, please file a bug.

How can I make a clipping mask in Cs5?
    Thanks in advance.

Create the shape that you want to clip out, select all art work that you want to be included, then under Object, choose clipping mask > make.
    Hope that helps.

  • Can't select or edit layer mask in CS5.1 extended

In our class, we have photoshop CS5 on MACs
I  started a project in class which involves creating a layer mask. I was about done with the mask, but  brought it home to finish. I opened the file on my WIN XP running  photoshop CS5.1 extended, which I installed this morning. In class I was  able to click on the mask to select it, then use the brush to edit the  details, painting black or white as needed to refine the edge.
When I brought the .psd file home and opened  it in the newer version of Photoshop, it won't allow me to select the  mask for editing. I selected the layer then clicked on the mask thumbnail in the layer pallette but didn't see the corner  outlines that usually show when the layer thumbnail is selected. When I  tried brushing on what I thought was the mask (of the layer selected) I  got the pink overlay as is usually seen in quickmask. (fore and  background colors were black and white).
Does v5.1 behave  differently with masks from v5.0? I didn't change any of the factory  default settings and in class it is standard practice to reset to the  default when we begin.
    any ideas?

sweet. That did the trick Noel.
I didn't turn quickmask on. I just loaded the file from my flash drive and first thing I tried was to select the layer mask. I'll have to try another file to see if PS is starting in quickmask mode itself.
I had an inkling I was in quickmask mode from the pink painting, but hadn't selected it and didn't know about the q hotkey. newbie here just a few weeks into the intro course.
again, thanks for the fast reply. I just might be able to finish this assignment yet tonight.

  • Bonehead layer mask question:  CS5

    I am new to photoshop.
I am running PS CS5 on a Macbook Pro.
I have a document with two layers.
The top layer is a black & white adjustment layer with mask.
    Opacity is set to 50%
The bottom layer is a colored background layer.
I don't know what the little square is called at the lower left of screen.
The background part is set to white and the foreground part is set to black.
When I select a brush and try to reveal some of the colored elements below nothing happens.
Do I need to activate any other settings to make this happen?

Good advice above, but one more thing (sorry for a very basic question):  Have you targeted the mask?  You have to click on it before you can paint on it.
Just reviewing...  With your Opacity at 50% your image will still have some color, and painting black on the layer mask will hide the effects of the Black & White layer and reveal more color.
If you're still having trouble, please capture your entire screen, save as a JPEG, and post it here using the little "camera" icon just above the edit box.  Usually people can home right in on what's wrong by seeing the various Photoshop indicators on the screen.

  • Vector mask error after editing mask - Mac CS5

    Hi There,
When I create a rounded corner vector shape then apply a gradient vector mask, the result is as expected - the gradient in the vector mask fades the object as per the mask.
If I then edit the mask (either by moving the start/end points or try to make the end point not fully transparent) the gradient stops sharply.
The result is an mask with a gradient that stops short about 30px from the end of the object - so I see the gradient stop and the mask just cuts off.
Not sure what I'm doing wrong - any suggestions would be most welcome.
    Cheers
    Ben

I've  run into this as well and believe it is a bug. While you can't avoid it, you can repair it.
In the Layers panel, click the chainlink icon between the mask and maskee. This breaks the size relationship between the two objects.
Select the mask in the Layers panel, then either use the Scale tool or the W and H fields in the Properties panel to correct the size.
Relink the two objects by clicking in the chainlink area.

  • Clipping masks in ai CS5 deletes strokes and other crazy things

When creating a clipping mask, Illustrator CS5 deletes the stroke on the mask itself and when I add the stroke back in, it adds the same stroke to objects within the clipping mask.
In the file below, Figure 1 shows a rectangle with a black stroke and an orange circle with no stroke. Figure 2 shows the result of creating a clipping mask - the black stroke on the rectangle has been deleted. Figure 3 shows the result of adding the black stroke to the mask - it adds the stroke to the orange circle as well.
This is one of the many things about Illustrator that lead me to believe that the people at Adobe have never tried to work with their own programs. Why on earth would I want the stroke to be eliminated in the first place and why would I want it to be added to the items inside the mask when I go to replace it?
Is there something I should do differently or is this yet another oversight I'll have to work around forever?

Thank you to Larry and Scott! That's exactly right. I wasn't aware that by making a clipping mask you also make a group (and I'm not entirely sure that it logically should) but using the direct selection tool does the trick.
    Thanks again,
    Dave

  • Need Help with "Channels" CS5

I am learning about using channels as a mean of channel masking in CS5.  The instructor on a dvd starts with a general understanding of channels.  Within the first 2 minutes, I can't seem to replicate his instructions.
Here are steps I take to look at the individual channels Red, Green, Blue.
I invoke "Channels" in my layers palette. What appears is the RGB, Red, Green, Blue Channels (with the eyeball showing in each of the individual channels).
The instructor says to click on each of the channel and you will see the appropriate a tone map of each individual channels.
When I click onm lets say the red channel, nothing happens ... all of the layer eyeballs are still on and I get no individual tone map.  If I deselect all of the eyeballs, then I can get the individual channel tone maps.
I suppose that the instructor is using a short cut key to invoke each individual channel tone map, but he doesn't explain it.
Does anyone have an idea how to get an individual tone map directly after opening up the channels palette, without having to mannually remove each eyeball.

Click on the channel thumbnails themselves, not the eyes.
The keyboard shortcuts are shown to the right beside each channel in the channels panel.
(they are different shortcuts than below, which is cs3, but your channels panel should show the ones for cs5)
Do you have any adjustment layers or layer masks in your layers panel?

  • Camera Raw 7.0 for Photoshop CS5 to be compatible with Lightroom 4?

When I try to open an image from LR4 in Photoshop CS5 I get a message asking me to download Camera Raw 7.0.  This is not on the Adobe web site.  When will it be available?
Message title was edited by: Brett N

Out of curiosity, what difference does it make if you edit ACR functions in ACR or LR? What can you do in ACR that you can't do in LR?
I sometimes think of LR as an alternate front-end to CS5. YMMV.
No, they're different tools with vastly different and complementary capabilities, unless you use them only for minor tweaks. Why would you want the same ACR capability in CS5 as you have in LR? Check into "Open as smart object" -- I do this sometimes to bring in a fully editable RAW into CS5 so I can continue to operate on it at the RAW level. You can duplicate the layer, apply ACR to the duplicate (which also modifies the first layer), rasterize the duplicate when you're done. Then you go back to the background/first layer, set it back or change it some more with ACR, rasterize it, and with layer masks you can select which parts of each edit you want to show through on the final composite image.
I typically do this a lot for exposures that have too much dynamic range: one layer with negative EC, another with positive EC + fill (if needed), then composite the two to get a more balanced exposure. With the Adjustment brush's updates in LR4, you can do most of this now there (Shadow recovery in the Adjustment Brush is huge!), but that is using circular areas, which aren't always practical. Think of an irregular, jagged edge area that is in shadows: that's a lot of little and big brush circles to get the job done in LR4, where a mask in CS5 is far more practical and powerful.

  • Vector Mask Path doesn't show for CS6?

When using pen or path related tools, I can still see the the path for the vector mask. But when clicking on the brush tool or any other tool not related to paths, the path for the vector mask disappears. The vector mask is also highlighted in the layers. There's no x mark or anything in vector mask. CS5 didn't have this problem. Is this CS6 function or not?
    CS6:
Using Pen or Path related tools
When clicking on Brush tool or others, paths disappear
    CS5:
    No problem with CS5

    Good day!
    CS5 didn't have this problem.
This is just the way things are in CS6.

  • How does Refine Edge work?

    Hi,
I have been strugling with Refine Edge/Refine Mask. I can't understand what it is doing so it is difficult to me to make it work.
I would like to know HOW you tell this command which colors to keep and which to remove. I have an image taken with a white background and trying to extract it to place in a dark background makes tons of white "spilling" to appear all around the edges, especially horrible where hair is present.
I believe that, according to how my brain works, if I could understand how Refine Edge works then I would be able to get better results.
    Thanks,
    Juan
P.S: I have seen several videos on this topic but they are desceptively simple and claim incredible results which I cannot reproduce on my own. I have started to think there is something being withheld by this people and that these could explain why they get great results and I don't .....

Refine Edge is refining your selection marquee. Save the selection as a mask on the target layer then drag the layer to the other document. Or "Layer via Copy" (Cmd/Ctrl+J) can be used to make a new layer according to the active selection, then drag that layer to the other document.
By the way, Refine Edge has output options at the bottom of its window where you can specify such things as a new masked layer.
And there's Refine Mask which is the same as Refine Edge except it acts on an already existing mask. It can be accessed by "Mask Edge..." in the Properties panel (CS6) or Masks panel (CS5) when a layer mask is targeted.

  • GURU question - Creating a PNG with photographic (transparent) reflection

I'm trying to create a PNG file that maintains its reflection which was captured in-camera. The end result would be that the PNG could be used over any colored background (easy for the object) and the reflection takes on the color of the background (not easy to achieve if you can't multiply the reflection over a colored background).
The image was shot on a white background but needs to be able to fall on any color. It would be easy to use the path around the object to isolate the background to a new layer and simply set the layer to Multiply. I realize that, but these PNG files could end up being used by anyone, and they may not have Photoshop, but rather - Powerpoint. :-/
I've developed a process that does this to a degre, but I end up with a white halo around the feathered edges of the reflection (not shown in the example above - see below).
In the shot above, I've split the (very subtle) reflection in a layer set to Multiply, seen to the upper left along the edge. To the lower right is the same reflection with a white hazy halo bleeding into the feathered edge, and this was generated using the process below. Remember, everything is shot on a white background so the reflection has white feathered into it. I'm like this close to desirable results, but the haze has me stumped.
Here's how I got the right side to be transparent without using Multiply, and saving as PNG. Anyone who opens the file should be able to place it over any color background, supplied to them in PNG format.
    1. Using high res JPG image, convert "Background" to Layer 0.
    2. Activate Path 1 as selection, invert selection and copy all area around product. Paste that copy to new layer.
    3. Using same selection, delete all area around product in Layer 0. Now the product is on a separate layer from the shadow and reflection.
    4. Duplicate reflection layer and invert. Turn off all other layers. Go to Channels pane, select Blue channel - Command-click channel - Copy.
    5. Return to Layers pane and add layer mask to reflection layer. Delete duplicate layer from step 4.
    6. Go to Mask pane (CS5) or Properties (CS6) and click on Mask Edge. Slide the Shift Edge parameter to +100.
    7. Run Levels on reflection layer - set the Input mid to .96 and set highlight Output Level to 250.
    8. Select background image area using mask - subtract subject from selection using path and run Exposure on reflection layer from menu command: Image/Adjust/Exposure: -0.24, -0.15, 0.70. (Using an adjustment layer for Exposure will not work. It saves to PNG with a different outcome when reopened - thanks Adobe!)
    9. Set reflection layer opacity to 60%.
So - if anyone has any constructive input to tackle this haze issue, I'd really appreciate hearing from you. It's just about there, but not quite acceptable yet. Hoefully, my explanation is clear and easily understood.
    Thanks very much in advance!

It was difficult, but I believe I've reached Photoshop nirvana. I have the file split in half with the left side multiplying and the right side following the process I've just finished creating. The match is dead nuts, left to right. I now have a transparent PNG with shadows and reflections that will behave in the same manner as a multiplied image, over colored backgrounds.
Experienced PS users should be able to follow these notes, which are a modified version of what's in the OP:
Method for Creating Transparent Photographic Reflections
(Uses the reflection as captured in-camera - not manufactured flip reflections)
This process begins with a high resolution JPG that already has the subject outlined with a path.
    1. Using HR JPG image, convert "Background" to Layer 0.
    6. Go to Mask pane and click on Mask Edge. Slide the Shift Edge parameter to +100.
    7. Run Levels on reflection layer - set the Input mid to .96 and set highlight Output Level to 250.
    8. Select background image area using mask - subtract subject from selection using path and run Exposure on reflection layer from menu command: Image/Adjust/Exposure: -0.95, -0.004, 1.49.
    9. Refine edge of mask - Shift Edge: -47
    10. Run levels on reflection image: Mid - 0.45
    11. Refine mask again - Shift Edge: -18
    12. Duplicate layer and refine mask to: Contrast 25, Shift -40. Change layer opacity to 25%
    13. Save PNG version.
I'd like to thank those who contributed input to this thread!

  • Is a noise brush possible?

Is it possible to create a custome noise removal brush for use in the Adjustment Brush Module?
Most of the time, I only need selective noise removal in the sky portion of some shots for example but I still want to maintain detail in faces or in the remainder of the picture.  Essentially, I just want to brush over the sky with a custom noise brush...... is it possible to create one? I hate going back and forth to CS5 to mask.   Thanks.

Thank you both.  I didn't think it would be possible but it didn't hurt to ask.  I will continue with my own methods via layering and masking in cs5.
Thanks again for taking the time.

  • CS5 64 bit Masking is not working

Wierd problem in 64 bit layer masking dosen't work properly.  White reveals the layer below when using brush tool.  Black will not paint back in.  Isn't white working backwards?  I am using Win 7 core I7 processor with 12gig of ram.
CS5 in 32 bit works fine so far.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Dave

Double check that your brush tool is not set to something other than "Normal" mode painting.
However, white in a layer mask should cause opacity and show what's on the layer itself, black should allow what's below to show through.
Choose Edit - Preferences - Performance, and disable OpenGL Drawing temporarily.  If that helps, see if there is a video driver update from the web site of the maker of your particular graphics card.

  • Fluid Mask 3 Problems in Photoshop CS5?

    Hello,
I have been using Fluid Mask 3 to edit trees and skies in my photographs. When I am in Fluid Mask, I can get the mask to work perfectly and there is no fringing around the leaves or branches of the trees, no matter how fine the detail is. Impressive. The problem is when I go back to Photoshop and drop in another sky behind the trees, fringing reappears at the trees edges. In Photoshop, I use the defringing option which helps a bit but it is not perfect. I am perplexed my Fluid Mask 3. Why can't I get the same file in Fluid Mask 3 into Photoshop? There has to be a way I can get the exact file from Fluid Mask 3 into Photoshop CS5. Your help would be appreciated.
    Thank you,
    David

You'll have to ask the makers of FluidMask3 about that.

  • Photoshop CS6  transparent mask causing problems when saved as RGB Tiff and placed into CS5 Indesign

Is anyone aware of a gray/black halo around feathered transparency objects. The halo occurs where the solid area of pic feathers to the transparent.
NOTE: Image looks fine in Photoshop(CS6) but when placed as an RGB TIFF into Indesign (CS5) a black halo appears on page. See visual explanation below.
This only happens when image is an RGB Tiff and layer mask is used to create transparency. If image is saved as .psd then it is fine. Also when RGB tiff is converted to CMYK then this is also ok.
    Is
I look forward to anyone's suggestions.
Ideally I could just start using psd format, but I have to handle alot of images that are already in RGB tiff and it is time consuming to have to open and re-save all of these.
Adobe Photoshop CS5 RGB tiffs are still working fine.
    Thanks.
    Colourjam.
    (Pre-Press Production  Digital Image Operator)

Yes the halo is does appear on the final PDF used for printing, and therefore does unfortunately print.
Why would RGB Tiffs in Photoshop CS6 suddenly cause this to happen. If we revert back to placing Photoshop CS5 files into Indesign,  all is good.
Also it is not just an isolated event as my colleague has the same thing happening on his workstation.
Could it be that that Indesign 5  cannot colour manage the new CS6 RGB Tiff files?
CMYK tiff works well, as does PSD (CMYK and RGB)
Also please note, that if you were trying to recreate this to see if you get the samed problem, the halo occurs as soon as you create transparency with a layer mask and feather the edge of mask, and then save as RGB tiff.  It will not be visible if you have a hard line or a vector edge.
Just for the record here is our set up.
    Indesign CS5 (PC)
    Photoshop CS6 (PC)
