Masks in CS6

I was trying to learn from this video about masking.  It says it is CS5.
http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/masking-basics-in-photoshop-cs5/
When I go to the layers there is no masks.  When I go to the windows, no masks.
A post said that it was now under properties, but when I go there, it sasys no properties.
So I cannot even get started.  My idea was to take this image and repalce the screening area with a green background, in a manner that I thought might work similar to the video.  the quick mask selected the desired area well and then I could go no farther.

What you did looks great, but I still can't get started.
The instructions say:
In the Layers panel, select the layer or group.
Do one of the following:
To create a mask that reveals the entire layer, click the Pixel Mask button in the Masks panel, or click the Add Layer Mask button in the Layers panel.
Again I'm not seeing these buttons in my layer panel.
Both tutorials start off this way and so I'm stuck.
they are tree kangaroos.

  • Can't paint at full opacity in layer mask in CS6 64 bit windows 7

A problem has developed in my photoshop CS 6 64 bit on windows 7. I can't paint at full opacity in a layer mask. It is like an 75 % opacity brush. I have gone back to the default brushes soit is not the particular bursh. My brush settings are all at 100%, mask density is 100% , the blend mode is normal,-can't think of where else to look for the solution. The brush works just fine when I am not in a layer mask.
I updated the graphic card driver and also the wacom intuos driver. It has to be somewhere in photoshop CS6 as when I go into my older version photoshop, cs5, the mask opacity works works at 100 % opacity
Any ideas of what to do next.

I am having a similar problem that I need help with.  I just loaded CS6 for the first time ever last week and have been tinkering around with photo editing.  I am trying to use an action I downloaded to whiten the whites of the eyes and teeth.  When I run the action I cannot paint with the soft white brush.  I hit backslash and it shows no work completed, just a red background.  I have everything selected at 100% opacity (brush and action layer).
A couple days ago I was able to use the brush tool to darken the background by loading an action and paiting on.  Now I can't do that anymore.
I can use my brush for other tasks.  I am so confused.  I would greatly appreciate any insight.

  • Pen tool and masking in cs6.

In previous versions I could create a custom (vector) mask using the pen tool in 2 easy steps.
Draw a shape then drag that shape to the image i wanted the mask on. Done.
This "feature" has been removed from CS6 and its extremely annoying. Or has it just become a lot more complicated to achieve this?
I know i can create a clipping mask using the shape layer but that requires another visible layer in the layers panel. Having "roto'd" 50 elements in previous versions in the same workspace gave me 50 layers (cleaning up the solid black shapelayers after). In CS6 it gives me 100 layers.
I know i can select the shape as a selection and then apply a mask but that would make the mask a solid. I want to be able to move my tangents around etc. 100% non-destructively.
I work 100% non destructive and yes, my psd's become very large but thats no biggie, my computer can handle it. I don't want to rasterize.
If you have CS5.5 or earlier versions, create a shape and drag that shape to the layer you want to mask, remove the fill layer and you'll see what i mean. Thats what i want to be able to do in CS6.
Is this 100% gone from CS6?

You are being affected by an almighty f**kup by the Photoshop CS6 User Interface designers.
With CS6, Adobe try to pretend that Shape Layers are a wonderful new type of layer. The reality is that they are the old type Fill Layer with Vector Mask and the addition of a stroke attribute. There are numerous workflow disruptions caused by the "new Shape Layer" pretense.
Here's how to get the functionality to which you are accustomed...
The VM of a Shape Layer is only displayed in the Layers panel when the VM is disabled. To disable it, shift-click its "Shape Path" thumbnail in Properties panel. (You can record an Action of shift-clicking that thumbnail to create your own Disable Vector Mask command which can be run when the Properties panel is closed.) The revealed VM can now be dragged to another layer in the Layers panel.
By the way, you can draw a path and directly create a Vector Mask for a regular pixel layer without making a Shape first. Draw the path with the Pen Tool or with a shape tool set to "Path" mode in its options bar, then Cmd/Ctrl-click the Add Mask button at bottom of Layers Panel when the pixel layer is targeted.

  • How to fill, join or outline a group of vectors for masking? CS6

I apologize if my lingo isn't correct. I'm not an Illustrator power user.
Using CS6 I have a bitmap I traced, which worked great. Now I want to create a mask simular to this horse head decal. Since the white isn't actually a shape I keep getting the error that I have to join the shapes. But it's a collection of black vectors that make up the image. What would be the best way to create an outline, or a fill that I could use to mask with? In photoshop I remember you paint a mask area.Which would be ideal. Is there a simular way to to this wiht CS6? Hope this make sense.
    Thank you.

    Scott,
Thank you. Unfortunately this isn't working for me.  It's created a square around the objects, not an outline of the images like I had thought. So I looked via the layer tool again and noticed some were marked as a compound path already, so I ungrouped them, and they all were on the same level. Tried again, and I'm getting the same result. I guess I was expecting to see an outline of a simular shape? Appreciate your help.

  • Layers & stuck in opacity mask layer CS6

    Hi,
I have two layers. Upper most with text is locked.
Bottom layer is an image I have applied a transparency/gradient mask for the raster image. Now, seems my layers palette is stuck in a mode called 'Layers (Opacity Mask)'.
Not seen this before, but this is CS6. How do I get out to the main, root level of the layers palette?
    thanks!

In the Transparancy Panel, select the left icon.
You have select the right icon (to edit the Transparancy mask)

  • Can't Stroke Object after Clipping Mask? CS6

Hello:                                                                                    Level: Newbie  OS: Windows 7 64 bit  Ps: CS6
I am having trouble with a tutorial.
It says to ... Create a New Layer and place it above the "main object" layer (which has a Clipping Mask) and also apply the Clipping Mask
Then I am to Ctrl + Click the main object to Select it and then Right Click to choose Stroke from the menu.
However, when I right click the New Layer with the Clipping Mask the Stroke option is not available ~ nor is it when I click on the object itself on the
    canvas.
So, I went to Edit > Stroke and tried to apply the Stroke that way but the Stroke is not visible.
I also tried going to Blending Options to apply the Stroke but it's not visible this way either.
I've tried to search the manual for an answer and the FAQ's but I cannot seem to narrow things down.
Thank you so much for your time and assitance
Here's the tutorial I am trying to follow:  http://designinstruct.com/drawing-illustration/how-to-create-an-ipad-2-from-scratch-using- photoshop/
I'm stuck down under step #1 ~ it's down a bit after where I apply the Noise

    Hey Conroy,
Thank You so much ... I can't believe I forgot that "little" detail
Also, huge Thanx to R_Kelly!! You helped me out a lot as well
Conroys solution is correct ~ under the circumstances I mentioned the Stroke Must be set to INSIDE.
However, the reason I could not get the Stroke to be visible was because I had not set the FILL to a color for the shape. When you create a Shape (and are following the steps I described) the Color Must be Set to FILL.
Also, In order to get the Stroke to show up on the menu when you Right + Click - the Marquee Selection Tool Must be selected on the Tools Panel to the Left.
    Hope this helps someone else.

  • Problems with clipping mask, Photoshop CS6

I have been working with a clipping mask around a complex item. This included a large clipping mask around the edge of the item, along with sections inside this path that were also 'cut out'. I am not sure how, but I seem to have done something which is now stopping me from making the additional 'internal' paths. Instead of these areas being blocked by the clipping mask, they are appearing as paths drawn over the image and not as part of the clipping layer (yes, checked that I was working in the right layer).  I have checked the 'outside' path and this is all connected - no gaps.  I have tried to set up a new file and start again, but now can't seem to make the mask behave properly. Can anyone help?
    thanks
    FB

THanks for that, but to be honest I am a real novice - learning in pieces - so am not sure how to check path modes etc. ..Any suggestions??
Here's a screen grab of the work and current settings:
Message was edited by: fjb3012. When I try and cut out new sections one of two things happen - I lose the image completely OR the new path sits on top of the image, with no clipping.

  • Using selection to hide a mask in CS6

    Hello
I wish to apply a grunge effect to portraits but for it not to show on the subject, just the background.  I have done this by applying the grunge effect then creating a mask and then using the brush tool to paint away the effect from the subject carefully so as not to spill over into the background.  It works fine but is time consuming.
I would like to apply the grunge effect using a selection instead whereby I select the subject and apply the effect.  Because the subject has a selection arouind it, I can use the brush tool without straying outside the selection.  I would like ti know how to do this, using perhaps the Quick Mask.  I hope you can help.  Thank you.
    Kind Regards
    Farrukh Hyder

With your effect on a seperate layer having a blank (white) mask, load your subject selection, go to the effect mask, and fill with black.

  • How to copy an adjustment layer mask in CS6

I want to use the same adjustment mask twice on the same image. For example I want to use the adjustment mask for curves and possibly saturation. How can I duplicate the mask but keep all effects.

You could put the Adjustment Layers into a Layer Group and use the mask for the Group. That way you'd only have to edit one mask to affect all your Adjustment Layers.

  • Clipping Masks Illustrator cs6

When I tried to click 'make a clipping mask' it came up with an error saying that the selection needs to contain more than one object....help please??

The exception to this is "Layer Clipping Masks". In that case only the layer needs to be highlighted in the Layer panel, as long as the top object in the layer is the intended clipping mask path.

  • How do you apply a vector mask to a folder in Photoshop CS6?

The ways you apply vector masks in CS6 is different than in CS5.
I knew how to apply a vector mask to a folder of layers in CS5.
I cannot figure out how to do it in CS6.
    So my question is:
How do you apply a vector mask to a folder in Photoshop CS6?
And while we're at it, what are the best methods for applying vector masks to regular layers?
    Thanks.

Yes and that's why I wrote the words "vector tool" and never mentioned a pen. (Although the instructions would be exactly the same for using the Pen Tool because the Pen Tool is a vector tool.)
which I then want to turn into a layer group mask.
And yes, this does not work the same way as it did in CS5.
    I wish it did. : |
Adding a vector mask to a layer or group is exactly the same in CS5.1 and CS6 on my Mac. Maybe that's done differently in CS5 than in CS5.1, but it seems unlikely.
You have the layer or group targeted. Now draw a rectangular path after making sure the Rectangle Tool is in Path mode, and not Shape mode and not Pixel mode. Then Cmd/Ctrl-click the Add Mask button at bottom of Layers panel.

  • Using masks Cs6

    HI All,
Question about masks in Cs6. In After Effects I have a choice to either add mask or subtract mask.
IE: I draw an ellipse I can either show the ellipse part or mask it.
In P.S I am not getting what I need. I must be missing a simple step. If you could share > the > Path > to achieve this it is appreciated.
    Using INVERT

Your screen grab is pixellated but I believe it shows you are down among the Custom Shape Tools. That is not where you want to be,
You want to use the Elliptical Marquee tool located here:
After creating the circular selection as described in the note I sent you, and the circle of marching ants appear on the image, click here
    and mask will be created.

  • Problems/limitations of Layer Via Copy (Cmd+J)

Some results of Layer Via Copy (Cmd+J) when pixel layers are targeted seem unusual to me. Depending on initial conditions, the result can be entire layers being duplicated instead of just the selection, masks not being duplicated, and the selection being lost plus Select > Reselect being unavailable. It's not difficult to devise workarounds but I think something may be amiss.
The following table shows my expected and actual results for CS6 on OS X 10.6.8. Results which I find strange are in red triple caps.

    PECourtejoie wrote:
JJ, line 4 works in CS3. are you sure the layer is targeted?
It may be available in CS3.  The second machine I had CS3 crashed a while back, so I can no longer install CS3 without calling Adobe for I did nod deactivate it.
I may have to do that for CS3 is the version of Photoshop that does not have bugs that affect what I use in Photoshop.
The only versions of Photoshop I can test these days are CS2 CS5 and CS6.
CS6 is so buggy I don't use it.
With CS2 row 4 is available, however the new layer created is not correct for the targeted layer layer mask does not affect the creation of the new layer. I retested CS5 and though it looked like I had targeted the layer, the actual target was the layer's layer mask. When I targeted the layers contents the command was available like in CS2; the created layer did not reflect the transparency caused by the layer's layer mask.
CS6 is still an other story: while cs6 works the same when the layer layer contents is the target, the command is available when the layer mask is the actual target, and the result is that the layer is duplicated and the selection is not honored.
    Here are some screen captures
    CS5 with layer contents targeted
    Results
CS6 with Layer Mask being the target
    results
In any case row 4 does not work the way I expected it too.
I never ran into this problem for normally I use stamp visible layers to create the new layers I want.
    Shift+Alt+Ctrl+N   Shift+Alt+Ctrl+E  or simply Shift+Alt+Ctrl+N+E
Stamp visible layers does not honor an active selection but leaves it active, so you can add it as a layer mask by just clicking the add layer mask icon in the layers palette after stamping visible layers.....

The documentation says "Mask and Look panels - The Mask panel is now placed next to the Look panel. WIth the masking and grading tools placed side-by-side, you can now work faster on the mask workflow." Is there a way to move, hide, or otherwise manipulate the panels for a custom layout? All the examples I can find on the Web show the Looks panel to the left of the Mask panel where the controls are available.

Ok, here is what I have so far. Appdelete the iWork and reinstalled. Pages and Number work, but not Keynote.
Now, I downloaded a couple apps that I need, and no matter what I did, the spinning ball came up and the download stopped till it unlocked itself. It is really frustrating because the download was not completed and whatever came through would not mount. Could this issue be the internet connection? Permission fix showed a lot of Airport issues. I will try to run permissions fix again.

  • How do I get Vertus Fluid Mask 3 to show up under filters in Photoshop CS6

The Fluid mask installer doesn't recognize Photoshop 6.  I selected other and tried to put the “Vertus Fluid Mask 3” folder that contains the files dbghelper.dll & FluidMask3.8bf into the Photoshop 6’s plugins directory.  It’s not available within Photoshop.
It does however function as a freestanding program so I know it works on the computer.  It also worked very well under CS5.
I’m sure Vertus will get around to upgrading, but I’d like to be able to use it with my current projects and not have to wait for them
UPDATE:  The above procedure works for the 32 Bit install of CS6...  Not with the 64Bit....  would like it to work with 64bit since I edit some sizable files

There's a new version out which works as a plug in for CS6 64bit, free update for all FM3 users.
