Masks Panel

I can't seem to find the masks panel in Photoshop CS6; where is it?  I used it in CS5, but can't find it in CS6.

It's not there any more.
When you have a mask selected, look for the features and functions you were used to seeing in the Masks panel of Photoshop CS5 now in the Properties Panel of Photoshop CS6.

CS6 problem. When I open the Mask panel, it takes up the entire screen width and the Looks controls disappear, Also, there is a new panel below the Mask panel that seems to have no purpose that I can find. The documentation says "Mask and Look panels - The Mask panel is now placed next to the Look panel. WIth the masking and grading tools placed side-by-side, you can now work faster on the mask workflow." Is there a way to move, hide, or otherwise manipulate the panels for a custom layout? All the examples I can find on the Web show the Looks panel to the left of the Mask panel where the controls are available.

Ok, here is what I have so far. Appdelete the iWork and reinstalled. Pages and Number work, but not Keynote.
Now, I downloaded a couple apps that I need, and no matter what I did, the spinning ball came up and the download stopped till it unlocked itself. It is really frustrating because the download was not completed and whatever came through would not mount. Could this issue be the internet connection? Permission fix showed a lot of Airport issues. I will try to run permissions fix again.

  • CS6 Mask panel problem revisited with screen capture

Figured a screen shot would help. When I open the Mask panel, it takes up the entire screen width and the Looks controls disappear, Also, there is a new panel below the Mask panel that seems to have no purpose that I can find. The documentation says "Mask and Look panels - The Mask panel is now placed next to the Look panel. I thought maybe my screen resolution was not high enough, but I checked and it exceeds the minimum requirements.
Can't figure out that bottom panel for anything. The little - sign to the right of the panel tab pulls up a tree of the entire computer, but I can't get any folder to display anything in the panel. Also, I can add more tabs with the + sign.

Does turning off »Use Graphics Processor« in the Performance Preferences and restarting Photoshop have any bearing on the issue?
Are Photoshop and OS fully updated and have you performed the usual trouble-shooting routines (trashing prefs by keeping command-alt-shift/ctrl-alt-shift pressed while starting Photoshop after making sure all customized presets like Actions, Patterns, Brushes etc. have been saved and making a note of the Preferences you’ve changed, 3rd party plug-ins deactivation, system maintenance, cleaning caches, font validation, etc.)?

  • I have just downloaded PS free trial.  The Mask Panel is not there. Why is that?

The other panels, swatches, colors etc. are all there.

Properties panel now has the controls that were in masks panel.

  • Properties panel for masks not working

The apply, disable and delete buttons on the properties panel for masks does not work in PSD CC. Is this a bug or do I have some setting not set correctly? If I want to apply a layer mask I have to drag it to the trash in the layers panel then make a choice on a popup menu. They worked in CS6.

I don't know exactly what is going on with your friend's system, but the instance you mentioned of Applying layers masks, was actually a safety error trap.  i.e. Do you really want to trash this layer mask or do you want to Apply it before deleting it.
In CC the Adjustment layer, and Masks share the same Properties panel, so you have to have a mask selected to view the masks panel.  It all works sensibly IME.  As I said above, you were coming at something a bit left field.  That's not necessarily wrong.  Whatever workflow works best for you is best for you, but there might be better ways to do things.
A lot of us rail innitially at changes to apps we have used in a certain way for many years, but IME they always turn out to be for the better once you get used to them.

  • Why is my Layer Mask filling with Grey

I'm working in a multi layered CS5.1 Photoshop project (I did not create it). One of the adjustment layers in the project needs a layer masks, and when I create one it is not working properly. I make my selection that I want to mask off and create the layer mask it creates it with White and a 50% gray insted of black. Likewise when I alt click to create a layer mask it fills it in with black and 50% gray. The layer did have a 87% opacity to it so I thought this was causing the gray to happen, but when I turned the Opacity to 100% the mask was still being created with gray.
I use the fill tool to fill the gray with Black or White (Fill settings are opacity 100 and fill 100) it fills the mask more like my fill opacity is set to 50%. Likewise it does this for the pant brush as well. I have messed with every layer setting I can find including the layer mask panel and the adjustment layer panel, and nothing seem to work.  Please help.
P.S. I'm doing this for work and so I cant take any screen shots to show what is going on.

Ctl+Clicking on the layer's layer mask icon in the layers palette should work and load the layer mask as a selection.  Have you tried resetting your Photoshop preferences. Also ALT+Clicking on the layer's layer mask icon in the layers palette should display the grayscale of the selection in the image window.

  • Masks Palette - Won't save density or feather values

So I'm having a good ol' time with Photoshop CS4 and I'm using the new Masks Palette. I'm loving how you can feather out even a path. I saved and closed my document. The next time I opened it, none of my nicely feathered paths were there anymore!
I'm used to having to feather out selections made from paths the old fashioned way and I was hoping this feature of the Masks palette would make things go a bit quicker. Either this tool is expressly used as a step to convert Vector masks into Pixel masks, which makes the tool a whole lot more boring, or it's a bug.
Can I commiserate with anyone here?

Yes there should be a way to rasterise the feather by control clicking the mask. Another much needed feature of masks panel - Noise. I will post this damn good idea in feature requests.

  • Problem with masks, the shape don't select the right area.

I was working all day with Premiere Pro and After Effects linked on and I snet another video fron Premiere to After and when I tried to create a mask it selcted an area different like in the image. I checked everything on the mask panel and It was all nomal, please help.@

This usually happens because you have an effect on layer, that distorts the image. Some effects are applied after the masks like this. If you want the ability to use a mask ontop of the distortion, you could solve it be precomposing the layer.

  • How to get panel to display thumbnails sized to layer bounds instead of relative toentire document??

There is an option for this, but it only partially works...and was wondering if there is something else I'm supposed to know about to make the feature work as described...?
I can turn on the option to display thumbnails .. bit in only works for bitmapped stuff.  None of my vector masks are shown at the size of their layer.  (Note -- I have layer shaped by transparency set to off -- meaning the layer is shaped by the vector mask and not any content.  This is confirmable by turning on the option to show layer bounds).
Yet, when I do this, it's obvious on the larger screen (if layer bounds are showing), that the vector takes up the full layer.  But in the thumbnail, I often can't even the shape at all -- not very helpful.
So what am I missing?  How do I get the vector thumbnails to display the size of their layer?
    Thanks!

That's definitely NOT the case in Photoshop...
If you use the 'move tool', and you have "show transform controls turned on', it will show you the
corners of the layer -- the actual size of the layer...
You can verify this by going in and and creating a paint layer, say 1000x1000.
Now create a shape some small fraction of that... Any closed vector and attach it to the
    layer, with Layer->Mask->Vector.
now check out the size in 'move tool' -- it will be 1000x1000.
Now go into image blending options and uncheck 'transparency shapes layer'.
Now, the layer is shaped by the vector -- not the transparent edges where your canvas ended.
Now, if you use move tool, you will find the 'corner' of the layer positioned around the vector, not
around the 1000x1000 layer you just created.
To round out the demo, save a copy of your mask if you want, and go into the mask panel
and select 'vector'.  At the bottom, of the panel there is a tiny graphic of an arrow pointing down
onto a 'plane', (or layer).  indicating to apply the vector mask to the layer.  Do so.
Now go into blending options and recheck the 'transparency shapes layer.'
Try move again... Now note the bounding box is the SAME size as it was with the vector
attached... because you truncated the rest of the layer with the mask.  You now have a smaller
object... that is that size...  (I know... all this is very basic to a community professional), BUT
my point now, is that if the outline box that small bitmaped shape w/o the vector mask is only
say 100x100 (vs. before it was 1000x1000... and if it's the same size as BEFORE you
applied the mask WITH the vector there (but shaped/w/transparency off).  Then I would assert
that the since the outline box is showing the size of the layer -- the size of the layers are the same.
Therefore, the vector takes up the full size of a layer that is shaped by that vector mask.
p.s. has Mylène put out any hits since your pseudo?

  • Masks in CS6

I was trying to learn from this video about masking.  It says it is CS5.
    http://tv.adobe.com/watch/the-russell-brown-show/masking-basics-in-photoshop-cs5/
When I go to the layers there is no masks.  When I go to the windows, no masks.
A post said that it was now under properties, but when I go there, it sasys no properties.
So I cannot even get started.  My idea was to take this image and repalce the screening area with a green background, in a manner that I thought might work similar to the video.  the quick mask selected the desired area well and then I could go no farther.

What you did looks great, but I still can't get started.
    The instructions say:
In the Layers panel, select the layer or group.
    Do one of the following:
To create a mask that reveals the entire layer, click the Pixel Mask button in the Masks panel, or click the Add Layer Mask button in the Layers panel.
Again I'm not seeing these buttons in my layer panel.
Both tutorials start off this way and so I'm stuck.
    they are tree kangaroos.

  • Saving Masks in Speedgrade CS6

I'm working on a video project where we have to use the same mask for multiple shots. The problem is, we can't find a way to save the mask so we can use it again. I'm aware of Adobe's update dated June 7, 2012 which states, "Saving a mask by dragging and dropping mask clip to mask store." Didn't work unless what I think is the mask store is not. Would someone please clarify how this operation is done?
    Thank you!
BTW, we're running it on a Mac.

    Hi,
Just as you write "saving a mask by dragging and dropping...". The key is that you have to drag
the grading layer or the clip -depends on which one has the mask- then you
have to drop it to the mask store on the bottom of the screen in the mask panel.
    Best wishes

  • Viewing image and layer mask?

Hi, thanks for stopping by and reading.
I've a layer with a group of people on it over a layer with a background on it.
The layer with the people has a layer mask which I've worked on to cut the people out...
Now I want to work round the cut out edge (layer mask) subtly refining it.
The image is going to be printed large so I need to pay attention to the detail... like strands of hair.
Intuitively (to me) I cut more hair off as opposed to left more hair on - if you follow. Perhaps unconciously thinking it was the way to minimse work because if it looks ok then job done.
Now of course I'm effectively working blind as I seek to refine the mask by adding-in soft blurred hair. (Hope you follow) So...
Q: Is there a way to view the entire original image with the mask overlaid?
I've come up with a working fix... I'm duplicating the layer with the mask, deleting the mask and adjusting the opacity so I can work through this new layer onto the layer mask below.... should I have approached this differently... more elegantly? Hind sight is a marvelous thing.
How do sensible people approach this exercise..?
Hope you'll share, thank you and keep well.

    Hi MTSTUNER & J Maloney
I really appreciate the interest you've both taken in the question.
Yes, J Maloney you would be correct. I was wanting to see the whole of the image, the masked bits and the not masked bits... as well as the mask too all simultaneously.
I'm currently kicking myself that I've not explored the Masks panel. Don't know when it was introduced, I have kind of skipped a version of PhotoShop or two on my own machine - lame excuse, I know gov. The density idea is far more elegant than my solution. However, I did find that by creating the duplicate I've been able to colourise it so as to make the results of what I was doing really obvious visually. I like the invert idea too, so simple - and it might prove the best of the options... but I'll try it on another image as I've pretty much done this one - lots of hats, not much hair.
No offence on the "last paragraph". My reaction was "it's not unasked" though I wasn't clear: "How do sensible people approach this exercise?"
Thank you too MSTUNER, I appreciate the time spent.
"Quick Mask?" occurred randomly to me. Something I've never bothered with, tending to go straight to Layer Mask work. I'll own up that Quick Mask has never managed to make itself part of my workflow, I've no idea why because I'm sure it should if I gave it time. However, a quick experiment hasn't produced a Eureka moment. I was hoping I could easily subtract or add a Quick Mask from/to an existing Layer Mask... nope, doesn't seem to want to - though it was a 'quick' experiment.
Thank you again for taking the time and enjoy the rest of your day. Regards.

  • Vector mask not crisp

    1) Drew a solid green rectangle
    2) Chose the shape tool again and set to Path option instead of shape layers
    3) Draw out an oval or rectangular path
    4) In layers panel, chose add vector mask
Even though Density is at 100% and Feather 0px in the Mask panel, I'm getting fuzzy  / faded / or jagged/pixelated borders.  Is there some setting I need to adjust to make this a sharp vector mask.  I think it looked right before (with crisp borders) - not sure if I accidentally messed something up.
    Thanks

Depending on what you're trying to mask, any pixels crossed by the border of the vector mask will certainly be partially masked in the interest of creating a smooth edge.
But upsample the image to a higher pixel count and the edge of the vector mask remains as crisp as it was.
Maybe I'm not understanding what you're expecting to see.

  • Having problem in making masks

    Hello
    I don't know why:
When I click "Add a pixel mask" button in the mask panel, Photoshop doesn't convert the active selection to a layer mask.
I mean as soon as I click that button, the other area convert's to active selection and foreground color changes to white.

    HI,
It seems to me that you are making the inverse selection and getting the inverse result. Just click on the invert button in mask panel.
    Hope this helps,
    Cheers,

  • Photoshop CS5 Refine Mask Edge Problem

Whenever I try to use the Refine Edge tool for a mask, it will not add what I have selected to the mask, rather it will take it away. This always happens when I use the tool, no matter what view I am in. Any suggestions?

I take it you are starting with a layer with a layer mask, and using Mask Edge in the Mask panel?  Have you got a copy of the same layer underneath it?
The shift edge slider is fairly subtle.  Try draging it to 100% one way then the other. Do this with a layer filled with a contrasting colour immediately below it in the layer stack.  You'll see a difference, but it is not much.   If you use big values with the feather slider, now that WILL be obvious!
