Mass confusion
Hi to all that reads this.
Just a few questions and one problem to solve for you outstanding tech heads. Just built a new system. My os locks up at very random times. I have played the musical chairs with my mem and it seems much better in slot 3 and 4. I have read around about what kind works and mine is on the list. I have installed the os several different times and low level formated my hd a couple times too. I am new to the 64 bit stuff and pci express. I am also getiing this warning on bootup>"Warning: Have Option ROM can not be invoke (Vendor ID:10DEh, Deivce ID :0053h)" what the? I am at work and my system is at home. I will give you all the details as I can.

PCI-X and PCI-E are two different things! You will only get PCI-x on something like a xeon server motherboard

WRT54G Security Mass Confusion
I'm very advanced computer wise, but very confused by wireless security. I have read countless instructions on securing my wireless connection, even a couple from Linksys, but each and every darn time, the instructions don't match my screen. That, or some error or warning stops my progress.
I changed my SSID and passwords. Now none of my other computers can get Internet. I disabled SSID Broadcast (went back and enabled as well) trying to get other computers on board. I went through he Mac filter instructions, got lost some how, and I've even used the instructions from Linksys "Configuring a Non-Linksys Wireless Adapter with a Linksys Wireless Network." I couldn't get those instructions anywhere close to what was on my other computers screen (ncpa.cpl). That process went no place.
Can someone please help here? Pointing me to Linksys instructions is not helping. I guess products change, but when it says to click on something that does not exist, DEAD in the water.
I just don't know what I'm missing here. This should not be so freaking confusing.
Please, please, can someone give me some step by step, SIMPLE instructions? Yes, setting up my Linksys for a secure connection, but my girls are going nuts because I've changed my settings and they can't get a connection. Crapppppollla!!

JoeWell, the wireless security you can use depends on what clients you want to connect and what security they are able to use. The best is to setup WPA2...
First: make sure you are running the most current firmware on your router. Check the download pages on the linksys website. Select your router model and hardware version (printed on the label underneath the router). It shows you a page with all available downloads for this router. Click firmware. It shows you the firmware version which you can download. Go to http://192.168.1.1/ The router firmware is shown somewhere in the upper right corner. Other firmware version may be different and it is somewhere else if it is not there. Check the status tabs or the administration tabs and look for the firmware version. If you are not running the current version, download the current version from the server and upload the .bin file to your router through the firmware upgrade function in the administration tab.
Second: setting up wireless security consists of several steps, some are optional:
1. change the router password, i.e. the password for the router web configuration. This password is request when connecting to http://192.168.1.1/ You can change it on the administration tab. You don't want anyone else access or change the configuration. For instance, the wireless encryption keys can be read in the configuration in plaintext. (O.K. This was not about wireless security, but the overall security of the router). Save the setting.
2. Wireless tab. Change the SSID from linksys to something unique. It prevents a lot of confusion in case your neighbor buys a linksys router, too, and runs it out-of-the-box with the same SSID. Save the setting. (Leave the SSID broadcast enabled for the moment).
3. Wireless security tab. Choose security mode "WPA2 Personal". Choose algorithms "TKIP+AES" unless all your clients can do AES. Enter a good preshared key into the field. 8-63 characters long. Leave the key renewal interval as it is. Save the setting.
Now try to connect your wireless clients to your network. If you are using Windows Zero Configuration for your wireless card you simply have to connect the wireless to your SSID network and it will automatically ask you for the preshared key. Enter it twice and you should get connected. If not, please check that the wireless card in the computer is actually compatible with WPA/WPA2.
After you verified that all computers in fact work, you may also do the following:
4. turn off the SSID broadcast. You network name is not broadcasted. This is not really a security measure as the SSID name is always transmitted when there is wireless communication in your network. So the bad guy quickly finds the SSID anyway. It hides the network (the existence of the network ) from your neighbors, though, which use a normal wireless adapter. This may be a good or bad, depending on how you see it. It will prevent your neighbor from finding out which wireless channels are used in his proximity and select a channel which is free. Two access points running on channel 11 can cut down the maximum bandwidth well below half of the theoretical 54Mbit/s of a 11g router. It is thus good to know what channels are used. But then again, hardly anyone will bother checking the channels of other routers around you but will rather simply complain about the limited bandwidth...
5. Wireless MAC address filter. This is another "security" measure. Again, as the MAC address is used for addressing in plaintext, it is quickly to pick up. You can configure all mac addresses of all wireless clients which are supposed to connect to your router in this list. The mac address is usually printed on the adapter or on the computer if it is built-in. You can use the list function in the wireless mac address list window and select all clients which are currently connected to add them to the list. If your network is protected with WPA2 and a good preshared key I would not bother with the MAC address filter. People cannot connect without the key anyway. -
Database + XML = MASS CONFUSION
Hi all,
I need a little insight because I've quickly driven myself bonkers... I work for an audiobook publisher and we're thinking of switching our catalogs over to InDesign from CorelDRAW (don't laugh). Basically, my biggest hold up is the fact that InDesign won't take SVGs! We use the SVGs for our book data (narrators, CD counts, ISBNs, etc.). Basically, I'm looking for an alternative way to get this data into our catalog.

After looking at the example, you can see what I'm talking about, that little clump of info. I just need to know how to easily get database info into InDesign, or if it's possible. I'm certain other people do catalogs in InDesign, right? We use MS ACCESS for most of our database. Any help at all will be helpful.

I'm in the middle of placing a bunch of content from Access into ID, basically the workflow is to create a single story placeholder, properly tagging it with the "parent" element of the repeating content, and then letting InDesign duplicate or "clone" this as many times as necessary to place all your database records. -
Hosting, sitemeter, google, mass confusion and horror
I'm completely ignorant when it comes to website related stuff - makes me wonder why I tried to get into it - so I could use a bit of insight.. Here's the issue:
When I first bought my domain, I set it up through Google's hosting service. Realizing I had no idea what I was doing, I went to iWeb. I have a fairly successful site going now, but I'm not able to track it accurately using Sitemeter because (I think) of the original hosting.
Google set me up with a start page. Now, when going to my site it will redirect from site.net to start.site.net. It was my understanding that I've moved hosting from Google to my .Mac account, so maybe I've set it up incorrectly?
After working with Sitemeter support it sounds like the reason I can't get accurate stats is that the site redirects. I can see that someone visited, from where, and for how long. What I can't see is the pages that were viewed, because it will only show me the a "widget markup" page.
Is it possible to remove the redirect? If I set up hosting elsewhere, would I still be able to use iWeb to edit the website? (something tells me no)

The four members of my family just upgraded to iOS 7 last night. We now find that we are receiving each other's text messages. It's possible that during the installs, a few members may not have "unckecked" the multiple phone numbers they can be reached on. I know that I had to uncheck my husbands work mobile number and work email address as they came up as choices for contacting me. So now I am receiving some of my daughter's text messages on my phone - she's not impressed! My husband is receiving my texts etc... It's a mess! I appreciate any help anyone can offer!
I had this problem last night as well. Only my daughter upgraded to iOS7 and she had an old phone of mine. When she upgraded, the phone asked for my apple ID and then continued as normal. However, after the upgrade, any text message that I recieved, she also recieved. I am pretty sure my wife thought I was hammered when she started texting me and my daughter began answering her not having any clue what she was texting about. Anyway, this only occurred with texts from other family members, not from texts I received from friends who are obviously not on our account (we have Verizon BTW). To resolve this issue, and it isn't a short resolution.... there are two options... One, simply erase everyting on the phone.... I don't like iTunes 11, so we were unable to back up her phone. I made her go through her 600 photos, delete the ones she didn't want and email the ones she wanted to herself, and then we wiped the phone clean and rebooted it... go into Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. The second option, if you have iTunes 11 is to back up the phones one at a time, and then go into Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. Either of these options wipes the phone clean of all information, text contacts pictures etc and then you have to re-enter all of your individual information. When you do that, make sure that no one is on the same iTunes account. Theoretically, after you do this, you plug back into your computer and SYNC your phone from the last back-up. This resolved the problem for us. I don't know if there is an easier solution, be we tried logging in and out of our iTunes Accounts, turning the power on and off, and nothing changed. So, we had to go the more difficult route to avoid mass confusion with family texting.

HOW TO properly use the MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool to update your BIOS
This user guide provides a step-by-step explanation for properly using the >>MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool<< to prepare a USB Flash Drive for a safe BIOS-Flash in a pure DOS Environment. The tool itself will not perform the actual flashing operation. It will "only" help you to get your USB Stick set up for an automated DOS flashing procedure which requires final confirmation. (If you should run into any problems before you are prompted for final confirmation in DOS, no attempt to flash has been made yet and there is no danger of a bad flash.)
NOTE: If you are having problems getting your USB device to boot correctly, you may need to format it correctly as the geometry data may be incorrect. You can do that by pickup option "Fix My USB key" from the Tool or by using >>> THIS <<< tool here! For future usage you can skip this step, it need to be done only once if your stick need adjustment.
Symptoms that your USB key need a fix after booting from the USB key:
* Error: "No bootable partition in table"
* Blinking cursor in a top left corner and nothing happens
* "RIVER2 MSI"
* "Error loading operating system"
* "Missing operating system"
* "Disk in drive is not a bootable"
* Booting from selected USB key is IGNORED, the other/typical OS continue to load as usual
If still no change after using "Fix My USB key" Tool's option or HP Formatter Tool as alternative.
Then try with different USB key, the issue is there.
Note: Those USB keys who support "U3 Smart", this "feature" must be removed before proceed.

0. Preconditions & System Requirements
The main precondition for using the tool is a working & healthy Windows installation on the system that needs the BIOS flash. The Tool is designed to work with MSI Retail Boards & Laptops only.
Please note mainboards of other brands and OEM boards that are manufactured by MSI but sold by Medion, HP, NEC and others are not supported. If you have an OEM board that needs a BIOS update read this topic: >>OEM boards manufactured by MSI<<
Supported Operating Systems: All current Windows Versions (32bit & 64bit, any service pack (SP)): Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows 2003, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7.
The second requirement is that you have a fully functional USB Flash Drive that uses the FAT file system (FAT/FAT32). NTFS is not supported. If your USB Flash Drive is using the NTFS File System, reformat it to FAT or FAT32.
As the tool also provides a Live Update Option ("SureHands"), you'll need a working internet connection if you want to choose this method. Not all boards are supported at this point.*
* Check section 3.3 of this guide to see if your board is currently supported by the SureHands feature.
1. Basic Description of Functionality
The MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool will help you to easily prepare an USB flash drive for an automated BIOS flash in a pure DOS environment, which is the safest way to perform such a procedure. The tool will also allow you to run MemTest86+ in a pure DOS environment. However, the preparation of your USB Stick is done in Windows and basically includes two steps:
(1) The device will be made bootable.
(2) All necessary files (incl. BIOS file, actual flasher and MemTest86+ executable) and all DOS commands that are needed to flash/test memory will automatically be implemented.
Because the tool does not reformat your USB Flash Drive*, no files that may currently be on the stick will be lost during the procedure. Just make sure that there is still some free drive space, otherwise there will not be enough room for the files that are needed for BIOS Flashing.
* Excluding the Geometry Change method which will destroy all data on the USB storage device.
2. Installing/Starting the tool
Treat the forum's USB Flashing Tool like a regular application. Download it to and run it from your hard drive, there is no need to copy & start it from the USB Flash Drive that you want to use for flashing. Both, the installer version and the stand-alone version, do precisely the same job. Which of the two versions you use, is solely up to you and your preferences. The stand-alone version can be started directly by clicking on the executable file. The installer version will perform an installation and provide you with an entry in your start menu and a desktop shortcut to start the tool.
When you start the tool a DOS box should open up to provide you with status messages and prompts. Do not close that box unless you want to abort the preparation procedure!
Please ensure that you connect the USB flash drive you wish to use before starting the Tool!
NOTE: If you do not connect your USB storage device before starting the tool, or the tool doesn't detect it. You can still insert the drive letter, as the tool will continue as normal.
The tool will first check, if an MSI mainboard is installed in your system and show you its model name and PCB Version in a message box. Click >OK< to continue to choose the tool's preparation method that you want to use to prepare your USB Flash Drive.
3. Choosing a Preparation Method
If your MSI Retail Board is properly detected and you have pressed the >OK< button in the message box, an option box will pop up that allows you to choose between three different operating modes. The options you can choose from are more or less self-explanatory, however, read the detailed description if you are unsure how to proceed at this point:
3.1. Method 1: Processing a BIOS Archive Directly (ZIP/RAR)
Official MSI BIOS-Updates that can be downloaded from the product site of your board model do usually come as .ZIP or .RAR archives that contain the actual BIOS File and the corresponding AWARD or AMI flashing utility (depending on the BIOS Type of your board). If you have downloaded such an archive, you should choose the first method from the option box.
You do not need to extract the files from the BIOS archive. The tool will ask you to point it to the archive you downloaded and automatically extract the BIOS File and the AMI or AWARD flashing utility and put it them on your USB Flash Drive. You don't have to worry about anything else. All you have to do is to remember where you saved the ZIP or RAR file you downloaded:
3.2. Method 2: Processing a BIOS File Directly
If you do not have a ZIP or RAR archive that already contains a BIOS File and the proper flashing utitility, but only the plain unpacked BIOS File, choose the second Method from the option box. In most cases BETA BIOS Files supplied by MSI Support or shared here in the Forum do not come with the proper flashing utility. If the MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool is told to process a plain BIOS File, it will automatically check the type of BIOS File (AMI or AWARD) and then select the proper flashing utility that needs to be used. All you need to do is point the tool to the BIOS-File that is supposed to be flashed:
3.3. Method 3: SureHands Live Update
"SureHands Live Update" is the third operation method you can choose from the option box. It provides a much safer and more reliable alternative to MSI Live Update as the actual BIOS Flash is performed in a pure DOS environment as well. If you decide to use this option, you do not to supply the tool with a BIOS-Archive or a BIOS-File.
Not all MSI Retail Boards are currently supported. With every update of the USB Flashing Tool more boards will be added. At present, you can use the "SureHands" Live Update method with the following boards only (the list will be updated regularly):

After selecting "SureHands" from the option box, the tool will automatically check for all available official BIOS-Versions for your mainboard. It will also look for the latest available BETA BIOS Version for you board and save that information in a TXT-File on your Desktop:
Note: The SureHands option will not provide you with the latest BETA BIOS, it will only provide the information.
When the tool is done scanning for official BIOS releases for your board, it will give you the possibility to manually choose the BIOS Version you want to flash. SureHands Live Update will not automatically select the latest version and use it for flashing, it will give you the chance of choosing between all available official BIOS releases that are available:
Note that the "May not exist" comment that appears behind some versions does not mean that the BIOS does not exist. If you know the latest BIOS for your board is e.g. v1.8, SureHands will retrieve it even though there may be such a comment. That message is part of a prediction feature that tries to determine future BIOS Releases. If a BIOS version that was predicted by the SureHands feature is not available yet, the tool will tell you if it cannot retrieve the files and ask you to select an earlier version.
3.4 Geometry Change
If the tool fails to make your USB storage device bootable then you will need to use this mode. It will make your drive bootable, select it:
Select your drive then let the tool do it's business.
Once the process is complete, run the tool again via method 1, 2 or 3, restart your computer and try booting from the USB storage device again.
NOTE: This method will destroy ALL data on the USB storage device!
NOTE: This method is available in v1.17 and beyond.
4. Selecting the USB Flash Drive for preparation
When you have chosen one of the three methods from the option list and pointed the tool at the corresponding archive, BIOS File or selected the desired BIOS Version from the list in case you chose to use SureHands Live Update, the MSI Forum HQ USB Flashing Tool will prompt you to enter the drive letter of the USB Flash Drive you want to use for flashing:
Note that certain drive letters are reserved and will therefore not be accepted by the tool (currently A:, B: and C:). If you are sure you have connected an USB Flash Drive to the system that works properly but it does not appear in the table that appears in the DOS box, enter the corresponding drive letter anyway and see if the tool accepts it. This can happen in rare cases, but it is usually no problem.
The tool will check the selected drive and will provide you with status messages. If everything is okay, the message should look like this:
The tool will attempt to make the device bootable and automatically write all files that are needed for flashing to the drive to prepare it for flashing. If the procedure was successful, you will get the following message in the DOS box:
5. BIOS-Settings, Booting & Flashing
If the Tool has prepared your drive for booting & flashing, no BIOS flash attempt has been made yet. Only the preparation process. In order to initiate the flashing procedure, you have to restart your system and make it boot from the USB Flash drive. Before you move on to do that, enter the BIOS Setup and check a few options:
5.1. BIOS Settings to Check
Check USB-related Options in BIOS:
- USB Controller
- USB 2.0 Controller
- USB Legacy Support
- USB Storage Support
- Boot from other devices
- etc.
Not all of these options may be found in BIOS and the precise name may vary as well. Just make sure you checked for such options and that they are enabled (if present).
Another option you should check for is "Boot Sector Protection". If such an option is present in your BIOS, make sure it is disabled because it may make a BIOS Flash impossible.
@all Overclockers: In case your system is currently overclocked, make sure you roll back to default clock and voltage settings before you attempt to start the flashing procedure. Otherwise you increase the risk of an unsuccesful flash, and you most probably don't want something like that to happen.
5.2. Booting from USB Flash Drive
To boot from your USB drive you can either change the boot sequence in BIOS accordingly or just press F11 during POST* to get access to the BIOS Boot Menu. From here, you can select you drive directly without having to adjust the boot sequence in BIOS. Note that your USB Flash Drive may be listed as a hard drive (if you choose that entry you will get another list to choose from).
* Not all mainboards use F11, for the boot menu. If F11 fails for you, please consult your manual for the correct key.
Note: If you have problems booting from your drive, look at the FAQ-Section of this guide and see if any of the tips resolve the issue.
5.3. Flashing Procedure/Running MemTest86+
As soon as the system boots from the drive, DOS will be loaded and you will be displayed with two options. One option will start MemTest86+, the other will begin the flashing procedure. If no choice is made, MemTest86+ will automatically start.
The flashing procedure will automatically be initiated from there. You will see status messages on the screen that will supply you with information and also prompt you for final confirmation for the actual BIOS-Flash. A backup of you current BIOS will automatically be saved to a file on the drive (backup.bin) before the flashing actually starts. You do not need to enter any commands in DOS. All you have to do is acknowledge the information on the screen by pressing a key.
The flash itself will only take a couple of seconds (20-30s at the most). If the flashing is successfully completed, shutdown the system and clear CMOS with main A/C power cable removed from PSU. Read the >>Clear CMOS Guide<< for further information.
After clearing CMOS you have completed the BIOS-Flash.

It's just example, do not mean that this BIOS used in the example is bad. But generally often can need to roll back to older version.

The MSI LiveUpdate can only update to the latest BIOS version, which is not good for me.

EDIT: After reading this topic: https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=129204.0 I realised I have the VERSION 1 of this board (I purchased it right after the launch of the MB (November 2007). It means it doesnt support CPU over 95W, but my Phenpom II x545 has only 80W. I still cant update Bios to the 1.A version.
So my third question is:

A CMOS Checksum error is normal and expected after a BIOS Flash and/or a CMOS Clear. The fact that this message appears, shows, that there was actually something programmed to the chip.

Are you absolutely and entirely sure that what you see is "1.1" and not "1.10"? Because v1.A0 is actually just the hexadecimal notation for v1."10" (one dot ten). The hexadecimal notation is only used in the BIOS File Ending. Once flashed, the BIOS will not identify itself in hexadecimal notation but in decimal code (which means you will never see "v1.A0" after the flash but "v1.10" instead.
Here is a piece of well-meant advice for now and the future: MSI Live Update should be avoided under all circumstances when it comes to BIOS Updates and/or information retrieval regarding your current BIOS Version. Why? Because this tool is stupid and one of there most risky applications for performing a BIOS Flash. Please uninstall it completely.
Why do I call it stupid? I call it stupid because it does not differentiate between hexadecimal notation and decimal notation. It will show you that "v1.A0" is available. The it will flash it, if you allow it to do so. Of course, a v1.A0 Version will always come out as "v1.10" (one dot ten). When you re-run MSI Live Update it will not recognize that v1.A0=v1.10 and tell you again that there is a newer version available (1.A0, which, again, is the same as v1.10, which was just properly flashed).
I believe that the update went just fine, that you are currently using v1.A0=v1.10 and that MSI Live Update is actually just creating a pseudo-problem which is currently confusing you. The pseudo-problem will immediately be out of the world, if you uninstall MSI Live Update and rely on the BIOS ID String as it appears on the POST Status Screen (this includes the date shown there).
If a BIOS Update should ever be necessary again, please make sure that you won't use MSI Live Update but >>Use the MSI HQ Forum USB flasher<< instead.

That's the same BIOS version... Just the "MSI Live Updater" is not very smart...
H.A=H.10=17.A=17.10 [A=10, H=17], the last "0" suffix in H.A0 means its official version.

So ignore this MSI Live Updater's no sense, and stop flashing your BIOS. You already have the latest version installed.
The Tool now will detect and shows BIOS versions alias when the MSI BIOS version is known with more than one name.
So no more flashing and flashing and flashing to the same version because of MSI LiveUpdate suggest again BIOS update...

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off. How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM. My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore. Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc. I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads. Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system. I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system. But are there other options to connect the new TC. Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above. after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working. Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant. I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work. The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network. Are we going backwards?

I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed. I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC. the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.

You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options. -
I bought an ipod a few years ago and used a few itunes cards to purchase downloads (music only). Then, i started copying cd's to my computer and they also showed up on my itunes pages. nonetheless, i started making playlists. in the meantime, there was a balance of $6.96 on my account, and i was not able to use the balance to redeem because i lost the itunes card it came from (who would've thought i needed to save the card)...anyway, fine, i recently purchased an iphone. Well, i have purchased a few new itunes cards and have downloaded about ten songs off itunes from my phone to my phone in my phone. Okay, now i am home, and i want to see about getting things in order, ie, making playlists, etc, but including of course the music i already have on the pc in its itunes page. mass confusion for a nontechnological person. i think it's possible, like, to transfer from iphone to pc, and then from pc to iphone, and to coordinate songs from one to the other, but i have no idea how to do this. so, i am researching, and i am finding support here and there, but my device isn't even showing up on the left hand side when i bring up itunes on my computer! so, there is no way to transfer anything!

Not so sure about the second issue without more info, but as to the first matter, pictures you take on your phone are saved to your phone, they are not saved to iCloud, there is no way around this only to move your pictures to a computer regularly to free up more space. -
I just recently upgraded my iphone 5 software to ios7 and discovered that i can't hide my text messages as i could previously in ios6.2., can anyone help me out with this?
I had this problem last night as well. Only my daughter upgraded to iOS7 and she had an old phone of mine. When she upgraded, the phone asked for my apple ID and then continued as normal. However, after the upgrade, any text message that I recieved, she also recieved. I am pretty sure my wife thought I was hammered when she started texting me and my daughter began answering her not having any clue what she was texting about. Anyway, this only occurred with texts from other family members, not from texts I received from friends who are obviously not on our account (we have Verizon BTW). To resolve this issue, and it isn't a short resolution.... there are two options... One, simply erase everyting on the phone.... I don't like iTunes 11, so we were unable to back up her phone. I made her go through her 600 photos, delete the ones she didn't want and email the ones she wanted to herself, and then we wiped the phone clean and rebooted it... go into Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. The second option, if you have iTunes 11 is to back up the phones one at a time, and then go into Settings, General, Reset, Erase All Content and Settings. Either of these options wipes the phone clean of all information, text contacts pictures etc and then you have to re-enter all of your individual information. When you do that, make sure that no one is on the same iTunes account. Theoretically, after you do this, you plug back into your computer and SYNC your phone from the last back-up. This resolved the problem for us. I don't know if there is an easier solution, be we tried logging in and out of our iTunes Accounts, turning the power on and off, and nothing changed. So, we had to go the more difficult route to avoid mass confusion with family texting.

TIAThis is an interesting issue because we want to allow our end users to enter account information such as contact info, address, email, etc. However, we do not want to allow them to change their default group and home page setting or mass confusion will happen. There has to be a way to do this!!

Plug-ins and horrible FF 32: For example, tells me that Adobe Acrobat 10.0.0.396 is insecure
I really, really, really hate FF 32 because it doesn't work right. That took me days to figure out. I couldn't figure out my problems at first--ran virus tools, etc., but it's FF. I tried for 2 hours (that I don't have) to figure out how to go back to FF31 but that seems to be impossible for a normal user. FF 32 won't go to many web pages, locks up, etc., BUT in addition, it doesn't like add-ons that are current and will not let me enable them: Acrobat as above (I have Acrobat Pro 10, not Reader, which conflicts with Acrobat Pro by the way so have Pro), Java Development Toolkit 6.0.250.6 "seems to be vulnerable" and of course Java platform. Please tell me how to get rid of the ridiculous security restrictions, which are causing me H_LL. Here's the thing. I don't want to use IE or Chrome, but Yahoo Mail will no longer work correctly with Windows 7. If you don't help me, I have to become a Chrome user. It's as simple as that. It's not allowing me to change the activation on the plug-ins or even activate the ones that are there automatically, which I really would not do in general. I'm not a new user, but this is TOO MUCH. Well I've never heard of the "Java Development Toolkit" plugin, but in case you meant the "Java '''Deployment''' Toolkit" -- you can delete this plugin without losing general Java content functionality in the browser. If you ''don't even need'' Java running in the browser, Oracle has a good guide on turning it "off" and all of these Java plugins will go away. I've learned that the Java Deployment Toolkit (also known as "Java DT") plugin is in fact considered "vulnerable" by Mozilla (and has been for a long time) but since that plugin is only designed for a specialized group of people, the default action of it being "blocked" isn't hindering the functioning of normal pc users (even in regards to the normal usage of Java.) Instead, they tend to get confused about the entire situation.
If you're interested in reading more about Java DT, there's a recent thread on mozillazine that talks about some of the security drama and confusion in regards to this plugin specifically. It also talks about the way to remove it too if you still need Java functionality in the browser. That thread is located here: http://forums.mozillazine.org/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=2877359 I'd also recommend just turning it all off via that guide from Oracle -- I have desktop applications that require Java but up until recently the only time I really needed Java running in the browser was for Pogo games...and I've since learned that due to the security hysteria and mass confusion in the past year, they're now transitioning to flash-based gaming instead of Java. (And whether or not Flash offers more robust security over Java would require a whole new thread. Hint: it doesn't really.)
Also, a side-note on [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/user/philipp philipp's] answer -- I believe he is mistaking the standard Java plugin (the one needed for Java functionality in the browser) for Java DT. He mentions 1.6.0_25 which is an '''extremely old''' version of Java...version 6 in fact. To everyone reading this: these '''really old''' versions of software are full of security holes so it's best to update to the latest version, preferably Java 8 -- assuming you're still not on Windows XP. Everyone (again): if you're one of the 23% of people out there still on Windows XP, you seriously need to go out shopping as Microsoft security support for that OS ended earlier this year. The newest version of Java 8 is actually relatively good, even over version 7. You also can't get too comfortable with one version of Firefox either -- it's on a "rapid release" schedule so be prepared to deal with new GUI elements and other annoyances monthly. Being "annoyed" with Firefox just "comes with the territory" of using this browser -- at least at one point or another. You have to be prepared for constant change with Firefox because otherwise you'll miss out on the necessary security updates. Don't pretend you can live on [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/organizations/ ESR versions] forever too -- these are not meant for the "individual user." In fact, [https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/33.0/releasenotes/ Firefox 33] just came out yesterday so you may want to try it. -
Problem with font size, not showing up as expected.
I've been wrestling with this for a few weeks now, but surely must be getting closer to having it resolved. It's just a problem with font size on just this one page.

I want the body text to be 10px, but after two weeks, have played with every conceivable way, altering body font size in CSS and in the document itself. I've viewing it in Safari but others on Windows machines tell me that it is out of whack also.
My main problem is that I can change the font size to extremes but it still shows up as the same size in the browser (about 12px.) I know changes can be made because I can modify the wording and that does change online. It's just a problem with the font size. Oh, and in the third column, the one to the right, in Dreamweaver, the font looks like it is miniscule, cannot even be read, but in the browser, since the style11 is applied, all three columns look equal size.
Not sure where to go from here. I just want to get the body font down to 10 pixels.

What would really help you in diagnosing issues such as this is to install the Firebug add-in for Firefox (as suggested in the earlier thread).
Firebug shows you visually what CSS rules apply to whatever element you click on the screen.
In this case, you have a confusion of CSS font sizes cascading on top of each other and that's confused again by mixing units for no real reason. .style11 is unnecessarily applied to lots of individual <p> tags. Remove those classes and delete the rule.
e.g.
The tiny font in the RHS column is affected first by
.style8 {
font-size: 0.5em;
affecting the <td> then by
.style11 {font-size: 75%}
affecting the <p> tag.
End result = tiny text (approx 2px).
In these cases of mass confusion, my approach is to strip out all font sizing from the CSS and start over.
Avoid %. Use px.
Apply font sizing rules logically starting from the <body> tag downwards.
That'll give you a solid baseline without weird effects.

Inserting clip into sequence: aspect ratio adjustments
I just made this page Aspect Ratio Adjustments available to whoever is curious to know what is the rational behind the values of +Aspect Ratio+ and Scale evaluated by FCE whenever it inserts a clip into a sequence.
This was inspired by Michael in his thread Still Photo Aspect Ratio Confusion: the topic is a bit complex to be handled with a Q&A approach. So I tried to summarize the results of various tests I made, with 3 examples showing step by step what logically happens in FCE in this process (what really happens... is a different matter). All results were tested in FCE 4, but this doesn't mean there are no errors or misinterpretations. So any comment is really welcome.

From this document (that seems to me pretty complete and written by people that know what they are talking about...) and my experience on the FCE "aspect ratio adjustment" behavior, I would conclude that FCE does not use the "correct" pixel aspect ratio definition, whatever is, but the simplified one based on the 640/720 and 768/720 fractions (for 4:3 frames)...
What's your opinion ?

confused. For SLED, LUM creates users accounts on-the-fly after eDir
login (like DLU on ZEN on Windows), the Novell client reads login
scripts and maps drives (like on Windows) but integration with LUM is
less than transparent, and there may or may not be plans to support
roaming profies, without which settings and user document folders are
stuck on each machine the account was created on, making it very
difficult to support without mass confusion.
I run a college network. If we are to have a chance to make people
interested in an alternative to Windows, all those functions must be
transparent to users (as it is with the Windows client and ZEN) --
they authenticate to the directory, their local account is created,
they get their network resources, and their roaming profile settings
and locations are as expected. They logout, their info is safe on the
network, their account is deleted. They go to the next class in a
different lab and repeat. This happens thousands of times per day in
30 different labs with students of wildly different capabilities and
expectations. But it just works.
This has been the Novell experience since the beginning (16 years for
us). It is still valid. Anything less than this makes SLED an
unworkable alternative. I'm looking for a way to make it workable. By
summer we'll have 1200 XP/SLED dual boot machines in labs and offices.
To make SLED a viable alternative we need those other features.
Otherwise, it's just a toy for the curious. Unfortunate.
So, here are my end of year questions:
Which of these fundamental functions are working with which others?
Which ones are in the SP beta plans?
Which ones are not being planned?
What is the process for helping the planners understand the needs of
the users out here?

Thanks for the comments. I actually don't care if it doesn't implement
the same way as Windows. I agree, that is not a good model. Copying
the profile is dumb. If the plan is to simply mount the home, that's
by far the best way.
I suspect that what we are working with is a terminology problem. If,
we define "roaming profile" to mean that the user sees what they
expect to see regardless of what machine they login to, that is all
that matters. The need to copy the profile on Windows causes all kinds
of problems and is a poor solution.
So, let me re-state what I feel our needs are: 1) the user, not having
a local account, authenticates to the linux workstation using eDir, 2)
gets all the network resources per network scripts and policies, 3)
their home "profile" looks like it should, with all settings in tact,
4) they logout and no residue is left on the workstation.
However that is accomplished, I don't care and I'm not wedded to any
Windows terminology or processes. Hope this helps.

After updating a 10.2.0.1 client installation to 10.2.0.3 I noticed that the version number format had changed. Before the update the versions were in the form 10.2.0.1. Afterwards the newest version is in the form 1.102.3.0. This looks like a mistake, but perhaps represents another versioning scheme. Does anyone know?

There is no mention whatsoever of the versioning scheme. If you know of a URL that actually shows this, we'd really like to see it. The fact that it goes to a version starting with 1 is causing mass confusion. Being able to answer with good information would make a big difference.
