Mass scan of photos

I have a ton (read at least 1250+) of photos that I want to import into iPhoto via a scanner. I'm just curious is any one has dealt with this type of situation. Has anyone used a scanner with an ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) like the Fujitsu S300M with photos? Does it work well? I have a flat panel scanner but it takes forever to import them because of positioning the photos.

Jim:
I can't comment on ADF scanners but my Canon scanner has software that will automatically crop multiple items placed on the scanner and save each as an individual file. What scanner do you have?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There's now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.

  • Digitizing mass quantities of photos

I have a couple thousand 4x6 photos (I also have the corresponding negatives) that I want to digitize, organize in iPhoto and eventually archive to DVD. I have a flatbed scanner, but scanning the photos is slow and tedious (rotate, crop, adjust levels, etc...) and does not yield very high quality results (at least my scanner doesn't). I'm interested in hearing from others that have experience digitizing a mass quantity of photos and how it was best accomplished. Thank you in advance for your replies.

If you have the negatives you will get _much_ better results from scanning them. There is more "infomation" on the negative. Paper does not contain the range of tones and the printing process introduces some optical blurring.
Assuming the camera you used was just "decent" (Not an SLR on a tripod) then your negatives might have 40 to 50 lines per milimeter of resolation. The 35mm frame size is 36x24. You would want to scan them at 3600x2400 at least. this means
8.6 megapxel scans or 2400 DPI optical resolution scanner.
If you were a very carful photographer, using good equipment and technique you might have up to 80 or more lines per mm on your negs. but half that is more typical of a hand help point and shoot 35mm camera. You would want an 18MB scan to capture all the information on a good 35mm negative and 1/2 the scan file size for a frame shot with a small "point and shot" camera.
    So you have some options
    1) Put up with poor quality scans. By "poor" I mean that the scan does not capture all of the image quality that is
in the negative. But this is OK if you don't need large prints and mainly look at photos on a monitor
    2) Buy a scanner that can scan negative with at least
12-bits per color chanel and 2400 DPI native resoluion
or 4800 DPI if you have better quality negatives.
    3) Pay someone a couple bucks per image to to the work for you.
The cost difference between #2 and #3 depends on the number of images. The breakeven might happen at about 1,000 images. Good negative scanners cost well over $1K.
When doing scans you always need to look at the final product. Are you going to "adjust" the images with Photoshop and make 8x10 prints? If so you will need a full 18MB scan from the negative. Or you going to show there on a monitor? if so a 200DPI scan of the print is good enough.
The next question is: "Is iPhoto the right tool for organizing thousands of images?" 2,000 imaes at 10MB each means 200GB of data. I'd prefer to keep that much data organized into some kind of folder strucure and iPhoto does not allw that.

    Hi @Mamusworld,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I noticed that you want to scan multiple photos on your HP Photosmart c309 as individual files, but the box to allow it is greyed out. I am happy to help!
This sounds as if there is a driver/software issue with your printer software. I would recommend the following:
Uninstall the software. Uninstalling the Printer Software.
Clean boot the computer. How to perform a clean boot in Windows.
Re-install using the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
Hope this helps, and have a great day!

  • Is there a way to mass/multi delete photos in all messages without deleteing the message

i have iOS 7, iPhone 4s and Mavericks.
i know i can tap and hold on the photo and the "more" option appears, then flip through the conversation and select individual messages to delete within that conversaion. but i have so many ongoing texts that i dont want to delete, and most have many photos within the message that go months back that i dont need. i dont want to delete the entire conversation but i dont need the photos embedded in the message. im tired of deleting  photos from the message as soon as i read or sent a photo text. is there an option in the phone or an app that will mass delete embedded photos within all texts. either iphone or mac app would work... or a script... anything! i would even be happy with selecting all phones to delete across all messages the way the camera roll allows you to delete. its seems like an obvious option.
    thanks

Open the Settings app > Notifications > Messages. Scroll down adn turn OFF "View In Lock Screen". You may want to consider setting Alert style to none, but this will not impact what happens when the screen is locked.

We have an iMac OSX Lion.  I received a CD with photos on it from a friend of mine. My friend scanned the photos to her computer and gave the disc to me. I can hear the disc spinning but the pictures aren't coming up to view. Before having the iMac I had a Dell computer.  I was able to view the photos at that time. Is there something I can do so I can view them on my iMac? Thank you.

What format are they? Tiif? Jpeg? You can compress them with a lot of apps - including Preivew and just about any graphics editor out there. I'm not sure that 45mb would crash iPhoto thogh, are yo sure that's the cause? I know that some folks have mentioned pixel dimensions causing issues, as can color profiles.

  • No color when scanning a photo

I cannot seem to scan color photos to my Mac, everything is in grey scale and I have no idea how it happened or how to correct it. I am using an IMAC 3.2

Okay, took a bit to find it, but I think this is it:
For Mac OSX 10.9  It's around the 0:57 mark in the video... the drop down field "Kind" has to be selected as "Color"

  • Mass upload of photo in Archive link

    Hi.
We have to do a mass-upload of photos in the Archivelink (OAAD).
Any standard program to do this, or any other clues anyone please?
    Thanks in adv.

    Hi,
just write a report and combine the function modules:
SCMS_UPLOAD for uploading from a shared backend path
SCMS_DOC_CREATE for storage of a binary table in a content repository (the ID of the content repository must be ArchiveLink compliant meaning a two letters ID).
ARCHIV_CONNECTION_INSERT to write the connection in the ArchiveLink table. Here, you must know your relevant business object (SAP_OBJECT) your doctype (AR_OBJECT) and your OBJECT_ID.
I assume that you need this for HR so here your SAP_OBJECT is PREL and your AR_OBJECT should be HRICOLFOTO
Now, you report must loop over the files and execute the upper function modules.
I hope that helps a bit
    Best regards
    Torsten

How do I scan a photo to a file and then send the file as an attachment  via email.

All of this depends largely on what printer /software you have, which Email client you use and to some extent which OS you are running.
Most HP printers have HP Solution Center which is used to set up scanning, choosing where to save, etc. Once a file/photo is scanned and saved to the folder, open the folder.Select the file and at the top of the window should be the option to 'Email'.
