Mass Storage - Linux - Debian Wheezy
I have just connected my phone to my Debian Wheezy machine in a hope that unlike Samsung, Sony will have Mass Storage as a option insted of MTP (Media Transfer Mode) / PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol).

But I have been mistaken, when connected, I had offer by the phone to install software on my
PC so I agreed and end up with virtual CD-ROM to install Windows software and no Mass Storage

Why is there no support for Linux / Mass Storage on Z3?
If you have an external SD card in your phone you can connect this in MSC instead of MTP. You can set this under Settings -> Xperia Connectivity -> USB Connectivity -> USB connection mode. But the phones internal storage can only be connected using MTP. As i understand it, this is because MSC would require your PC to have exclusive access to the memory and the phones internal storage is used by the apps and OS so it can't be used for MSC.

Kyocera Brigadier as mass storage connecting to Debian Linux
Hi all. I have a new Kyocera Brigadier but I can't get it to transfer files using Debian. The phone is running Android 4.4.2 and I'm using Debian Wheezy 64bit current. I set the android to Media Sync Mode but I can't find it as a device. If I don't set it to Media Sync Mode, then it registers as a CDRom but I can only see a few system folders (looking into the ISO), not anywhere to put my music files. Thoughts?

Why is it difficult to transfer files when Android is Linux-based? I've never had a problem like this before. I've had an ADP1 and an Android X2 before and this never happened until now.

Canon Vixia HF R400 - USB Mass Storage?
I recently purchased a Canon Vixia HF R400 and was wondering if there is a way to make the camera appear as a USB mass storage device (like an external hard drive or flash drive).
When I plugged in the camera using the provided USB cable to a Debian (Squeeze) system, Shotwell Photo Manager appears as an option but it never successfully gets any data.
I've looked through the manual but found no reference to USB mass storage. Am I limited to Windows/Mac for accessing the files via USB? That would sad, as I have neither available to me at home.

I've seen mention of other models of camcorders where the user is apparently asked to select their USB mode, but my camcorder doesn't seem to prompt for that. I poked around the settings menus as well and didn't find any where to specify USB connection mode.
Just so that I'm looking in the right place, could you give me an example for how you would do that on your camcorder (and what model you have)?
It would REALLY be nice if a CANON representative could look at this thread and tell me what I might be doing wrong to mount the camcorder as a USB Mass Storage device ... or if it's even possible under Linux.
I have 6 days left to return it at BestBuy, which I'd like to do if I can confirm that this is not possible for me, as I mentioned above, I have no Windows nor Mac computers here so I would need a generic USB Mass Storage solution that works in Linux.

[Solved] Banshee crashes while scanning USB Mass Storage mounted SGS2
I start banshee and then connect my Samsung Galaxy S2 as mass storage. It shows up in Banshee and Banshee starts to scan the folders for files, but at some point it suddenly crashes.
Any idea what is causing the problem here?

EDIT: As it seems, this was a general error of the FS of the SD card. I had to format it, which is unfortunate, but it works again.

I did use the trik on a custom kernel, i do have freeze (none tomoroy but two today but only on using firefox, so may be another probleme (sna)) but not on video (well i had run 15 video same time, and two where running 2 hours after without crash). May be you should try it (i think it work better).

USB Mass Storage device problem
Hello, I cant use my USB mass storage device in my computer, it is a SanDisk ImageMate CF/SM unit, which works perfectly in every other computer I have tried it, but in this one it hangs while accessing the device, and in linux, it hangs while mounting it (the same thing).
I dont know what might the problem be but some other people have seen the same problem, perhaps someone here can help me.Yeah, I though so, but first I wanted to know what might be causing this incompatibility, in the linux posts people have said that it is a nForce2 generic problem, perhaps a big nvidia bug? heh

How to use cRIO USB mass storage?
Hi,
I am using the NI9215 as an analog input port and want to write the data into an external USB mass storage which is connected in the
cRIo-9012 USB port. I do not have any idea how to write the data into USB mass storage, does anyone can give me some help?Differences among brands and models are due to the fact that certain devices take greater liberties with the USB mass storage device specification than others. A venerable operating system like Windows (or even Linux) is shot through with workarounds for device- and manufacturer-specific issues that are not present (as much) in VxWorks, which is the OS used on the cRIO-9012. Therefore only devices that adhere very rigorously to the specification are going to work properly.
Unfortunately, degree of adherence to the USB spec is not something that's generally published about a device, nor is there any sort of official certification process. So to some extent it's trial and error. I am working with our support enginners currently to develop a list of devices that NI certifies as interoperable with VxWorks, and also VxWorks is increasing the robustness of their USB support with every release.
EDIT: And the advice about reformatting the device is very sound. The cRIO-9012 does not support the NTFS file system, only FAT 12, 16, and 32. If the USB device is formatted for NTFS, it will not function properly.
Finally, if anyone sees a storage device that fails to work properly despite all these suggestions, please post as much information as possible (model number, manufacturer, capacity). Having this information will allow us to work with the manufacturers of VxWorks to improve USB support.

ICS - Live With Walkman - Can't connect USB in MSC (Mass Storage) mode

I recently updated my LWW to ICS and I can't for the life of me get the phone connect to my PC in MSC, mass storage mode.

Thank you.This question seems "answered" without an answer actually being there? I see the same problem - connecting the phone to my (Ubuntu/Linux) machine before (running GB) ended up in the phone (SD card) being mounted as external USB storage device just as one would except. With ICS, this doesn't seem to work out of the box anymore, but unfortunately so far I also didn't manage to change this behaviour. Any hints on that?

Andreas FrischI'm a bit surprised that the only supported Linux distros are commercial (costing money) distros!
What's the point in providing Linux support for your tools then. The overwhelming majority of Linux users use free distros like Mint, Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora etc.
I had exactly the same problem and now I'm forced to BUY a Linux distro in order to build PetaLinux?
Anyway, a) are there any plans to support these tools on the more popular (free) distros? and b) Does anyone know if we can use CentOS 6, since that's supposed to be a community (free) clone of the supported (but not free) RHEL 6 distro?
Anyone know of an 'unsuported' Linux distro that 'works' anyway (especially for the cable drivers)?
It LOOKS as if that one cable driver install issue is the only thing preventing us from using a boat load of other distros. Can't this be fixed?

SOLVED Support for Sony-Ericsson X10 phone's mass-storage (SEMSC)
I wonder if anyone's found how to mount the phone's SD-card. lsusb shows
it correctly, but fdisk can't find it.

If the USB-cable is plugged into both PC and X10, X10 thinks that it should use it for battery charging.
I unplugged it, set '/Settings/Sony Ericsson/Connectivity/USB Connection mode' to Mass storage mode,
ticked '/Settings/Sony Ericsson/Connectivity/Auto connect in MSC' and then connected the USB-cable
to the X10. That worked.

At this stage I'm not too fuzzed as I can transfer files using bluetooth. USB would be nice to have,
but if I absolutely need speed I'll pop the microSD-card out of the X10 and stick it into a USB-adapter.

KDE 4.2 and USB Mass Storage , does not write data until unmounted

I have a Nokia phone that I connect for USB mass storage, and KDE 4.2.2 does not seem to write the data to the device until I unmount.
Is there a way to force the write so it happens right away? It's annoying because I can't see any progress when it copies the data at unmount.

SnorkelThat's kinda the way linux does things, not specifically a KDE issue. It's so that the system only has to write out to the media only once, even if you separately add/delete/move 50 different files.
I think you can run 'sync' and that will flush all the file system buffers to disk.

Time Capsule vs. Other Mass Storage Device
I am a Mac newby seeking advice. I recently purchased the MBA below to replace my personal PC. My previous setup was a desktop with plenty of storage to handle my needs (including iTunes) and I backed up data directly to an external hard drive (I know pretty basic).
After purchasing the MBA, I realized I do not have enough internal hard drive space to store all of my music and my current external drive is too small for all the media and backup of the MBA. Also, the point of the MBA is to be mobile. Also, I would like my Sonos music system (with an application similar to iTunes) to be able to access the music library. Lastly, I have far to many songs purchase outside of iTunes to use iTunes Match. Therefore, I started seeking wireless alternatives to store my music and backup my MBA. Although an NAS would probably be ideal, I have found out through trial and error that the basic systems do not work with a MAC and the only ones with a prayer are the more expensive ones (i.e. Synology and QNAPS). Therefore, I have decided to pursue a more simplified approach.
My Internet and TV provider is CenturyLink. Their router is very basic with only 802.11g speed and without any USB ports. The following configuration has been suggested to my by some more experienced Apple users to provide wireless data access and backup.
Requesting CenturyLink provide me with a basic modem.
Purchasing an Airport Extreme (or similar wireless n router with a USB port).
Connecting the Airport Extreme (or other wireless router) to the basic modem.
Purchasing a Time Capsule (or other mass storage device).
Partitioning it using either the specific one for the Time Capsule (or Disk Utility for other mass storage devices) to provide one volume for my media and one for backup using Time Machine.
Moving the media from my old external drive (which is catalogued with folders for each artist, subfolders for each album and the songs in the subfolders) by connecting the old mass storage device and Time Machine to my MBA and using Finder to do this (see the questions below regarding this).
Moving/cataloging the media from the Time Capsule (or other mass storage device) by dragging it into the iTunes window.
Connecting the Time Capsule (or other mass storage device) to the USB port of the Airport Extreme (or other wireless router).
Setting up Time Machine to use the volume partitioned for backups.
Possibly having to move cataloging files from my iTunes, Music folder to the external drive and pointing iTunes to the Time Capsule (or other mass storage device) through Preferences, Advanced to access the music.
Overall, I am concerned with the total cost. I just spent a lot of money, not only purchasing the MBA, but also the iPad 3 and upgrading my cell phone to the iPhone 5 (I skipped the 4). It seems that by the time I purchase an Airport Extreme and a Time Capsule, I could also have just bought a NAS like the Synology 213 with 2 X 1TB drives, connect it to the existing wireless router via ethernet connections and have a more comprehensive solution. Based upon these instructions and cost concerns (and bad experience), I have several questions related to this.
Does this configuration and these instructions make sense, including those for moving and accessing my music files through iTunes (i.e. will it work)?
Are both the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule necessary to make this work easily or can I purchase alternatives to either or each and if so, what is recommended? If they are necessary, would you recommend doing this or buying one of the aforementioned NAS's to a Mac newby?
Given the file structure for my music on the old external mass storage drive, can I simply move the folders over with the subfolders containing the musice files in them or do I have to literally enter into each subfolder, select all and move them subfolder by subfolder (i.e. album by album)?
Am I missing something totally better and easier solution?
I would be massively grateful to anyone who can provide some good answers, advice and guidance. I am about to pull my hair out!!!!

Apple's pricing is pretty cunning.. I really doubt you are going to find a cheaper unit to do both wireless and TM backups than the TC. And it is a perfectly good device to do that. It is good to have in the network. And Apple sure make their products work with other apple products.. so it does work better than other similar cost products.. although you miss a lot of features that Apple predecided for you.
But I don't think anyone has the ideal solution to your problem. Apple believe in cloud. And if you have fibre internet that will work really well.. forks out your money and apple will store your stuff. But for the real world most of us do not have internet connection even a fraction of speed required. And it can be another decade before we will. We need a box that is half way between a TC and media PC, a file store and a NAS. Will Apple make one.. ?? I don't think so.. They believe in cloud..
You can make the missing link one yourself. If you are so inclined.. A HP microserver running freeNAS can do TM backups and makes an excellent media store because it can do AFP. You can put a graphics card in it and plug it into your TV. You can use it with a airport extreme. But you will need a degree in Geek.. !! The synology is a preconfigured form of that.. No Geekdom required. Synology seems to have the upper hand.. this week.
Let me make a suggestion.. Figure out if you are going to jump into the Apple way of doing stuff.. which is basically itunes on computer as a server.. and the whole network.. working as part of this.. so any media is pushed from a store in itunes.. whether local or internet.. if you want to do it that way.. getting something other than the air to run itunes is well worth it. That is what a NAS cannot do.. it cannot be a media player.
Or you do hybrid.. ie you don't use put all your media into itunes, you use a bit of this and bit of something else.. As long as that can play files.. stored on NAS or even on the TC without the itunes requirement.. It won't be as pretty. But it isn't hard to get working.. as long as you accept this isn't going to be the perfect Apple solution. -

PCI USB Card Does NOT Work With Mass Storage Devices
I have a StarTech PCI card with 6 USB 2.0 ports that I inserted in my 500 MHz (overclocked) B&W Power Mac G3. It works great for any USB device EXCEPT for any hard drive or DVD/CD-RW drive. I checked the system.log file for errors. Nothing shows up in System Profiler or Disk Utility, obviously. Here's what it consistently says:

I'm running the latest version of Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.3. What is wrong? StarTech doesn't have a driver, but nothing should be necessary. Is there a 3rd party USB Mass Storage Device driver that might work better than the Apple generic driver? PLEASE HELP ME! I cannot live with USB 1.1.Some users have reported problems with certain brand cards and their controller chipsets, so trying a different card may resolve the problem. Keyspan and Macally are often mentioned as being more "Mac-friendly" than some other lessser-known brands or generic cards. Does the card have a mini-power port to supplement the power requirements? With USB 2.0, each port is on a separate bus, so a card with six ports should have one. To minimize the overall draw on the available power, I prefer to install USB cards with as few ports as are needed.

Nokia C5-03 and Mac OSX Lion - Problems copying files to phone in Mass Storage mode
Whenever I try to load more than one file from my iMac (early 2008, OSX Lion 10.7.2) to my new Nokia C5-03 in Mass Storage mode —since the files are MP3s and Multimedia Transfer doesn’t seem to work at all, I keep on getting asked which transfer mode I want to activate for several times, I always choose Mass Storage, and then the first file starts copying, but when it ends with the first one I have to wait for ±30s only to get asked the same again and again until the second file starts copying, and so on.
It’s driving me crazy, I’ve tried setting in the USB connectivity options not to ask me for the mode when I connect the phone, but it doesn’t work either. It still goes very slow and a lot of “USB Mass Storage transfer mode activated” messages appear.
I’ve tested it with a friend’s C5-03 and it’s still the same, but when connecting them to a Windows computer everything goes great and fast. Has somebody had this problem before? Is there a solution to this? I don’t know if this is the correct board to post this, sorry if it’s not.

Can you try the suggestions below?
-Go to Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel (called Programs
and Features in Microsoft Windows 7).
Select Nokia Ovi Suite in the list of applications and click
Change/Remove.
In the dialog that appears, choose Repair.
- Click Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver and repair
-Try creating the connection between your phone and computer
totally from scratch. Start by disconnecting your phone. In
Nokia Ovi Suite, select Tools > Options > My devices. Select
your phone at the top of the window and click Remove this
device.
Then, select Tools > Add new device, and follow the
instructions to reconnect the phone.
If this doesn't solve the problem,
-Uninstall the following programs withAdd/Remove Programs in
Control Panel (called Programs and Features in Microsoft
Windows 7):
Nokia Connectivity Cable Driver
Nokia Ovi Suite
PC Connectivity Solution
Then, download and install the latest version of Nokia Ovi
