Massive duplicate playlists

Recently, after upgraing to Itunes match, I created a new playlist on my iphone in error (imatch activated), and didn't add any songs to it.  the title of this blank playlist was "flight" and I didnt delete it at the time right away.  A few days later, I noticed in iTunes (imatch activated) that there were hundreds of blank playlists called "flight."  These were being synced from that single playlist I made on my iphone.  I also noticed that my iphone now had hundreds of that playlist on it.  I was simply able to delete these playlists in itunes by manually holding down delete.
Now, yesterday, I all of a sudden noticed that these blank playlists have returned, but they have exponentially increased to over 14,000!  Because there are so many, it is really slowing down itunes and deleteing a single playlist (and I assuming syncing to match) takes several seconds.  I have tried downloading an applescript from dougscripts.com to batch delete them- but it has now been 24 hours since I have had it running and I ended up stopping it beause it was bogging down my system and I wasn't sure it was working (itunes was frozen).
Why are all these playlists being duplicated exponentially?  And more importantly, is there a quick and easy way to remove them?  And how do I remove them while preventing them from showing up again?  I am prepared to completely reset and rematch all my library, but that doesn't account for all the playlists that are already in the could.

The only thing that worked for me was:
1. Turn off iTunes Match on both my iPhone and iPad
2. Turn off iTunes Match in iTunes (from the Store menu, select Turn Off iTunes Match)
3. Restart the iPhone, iPad, and iTunes (or computer)
3. Re-sync iPhone and iPad with iTunes.
I had some issues re-syncing but restarting the computer helped.
Bottom line, turn-off iTunes Match completely everywehre. If I turn it on again, the duplicate playlists re-appear.
Hope this helps until Apple resolved this issue.

  • Help...I can't get rid of duplicate playlists on my ipod..

Just got a new computer, and copied itunes library from my old computer successfully. However, when I synched my ipod to the computer, I now have duplicate playlists...just the "apple" ones (Recently Added, Recently played, etc.) ones I have named myself are fine. I tried to restore and re-synch, and same problem...it's not life-threatening, but very annoying!! Thanks

Do these playlists appear multiple times in iTunes? If so, delete them from iTunes and then re-sync the iPod.

  • ICloud on PC has imported/exported massive duplicates in Outlook Calendar and Contacts?

I am a PC Office 07 user:  Why has iCloud deleted (upon install) all of my current OUTLOOK data (specifically Calendar & Contacts), and then apparently imported copies from multiple old backup files (groups) --- creating massive duplicates (and in some cases 4 or 5 copies) of the old information?  If you can help me regain or show the current data only, and ignore the older groups of backup, etc., that would be extremely helpful.
Before trying to utilize iCloud, everything was succint and fine.  Now, I have huge amounts of repetitive and outdated data on my phone and laptop PC.

Same problem here. Just set up icloud to sync calenders to Ouloook 2010 and I now have multiple calenders including a conflicts calendar which just seems to duplicate everything, but the crucial 'default' calendar is now empty. Tried various things copying calendars around but no joy and can't see any documentation in Outlook or iCloud

  • Duplicate Playlists

    Duplicate playlists
When you create a new playlist, especially if you create it on an iOS device, i found that the list gets duplicated—in my case 25,000 times (as described in thisApple Support Communities thread ).  The duplicates are empty, but they still take up a lot of listing space and are obviously annoying. Whats worse is the duplicates cause my I0S devices and my PC running itunes to crash.
Apple's response is delete them manually, its impossible as every time you delete one, it crashes itunes.
The symptom are linked to iTunes Match. In fact if i turn itunes Match off everything is fine. Its all fair and good that the post above helps you fix it, but what if your not a MAC user. We urgeltly need this bug fixed or a script that will run on windows.

    You mean something like KillEmptyPlaylists?
If iTunes crashes when you remove them by hand I can't guarantee my script will fare any better. I'd disable iTunes Match while it is operating if that's a thing you can do.

  • Duplicate playlists - Prune iTunes Folder?

My iTunes Folder contains material going back to my iTunes 3 Library created 4/28/03. A list of files/folders in the top level of the iTunes Folder is:
    Album Artwork (folder, 608.2 MB)
    Incomplete (folder, 25 KB)
iTunes Library Extras.idtb (file, 766 KB)
iTunes Library Genius.idtb (file, 66.8 MB)
    iTunes Library.itl (file, 5.8 MB)
    iTunes Library.xml (file, 18.1 MB)
    iTunes Music (folder, 287.24 GB)
iTunes Music Library.xml (file, 18.1 MB)
    Mobile Applications (folder, 4.76 GB)
Previous iTunes Libraries (folder, 113.8 MB)
When I import my music into Sonos, duplicate playlists are created. I presume this is because there are two library .xml files (iTunes Library.xml and iTunes Music Library.xml)
In addition, the iTunes Library.itl file is a potential source.
Can any of these files/folders be safely deleted?

Yes - playlists will have been sourced from each library, hence the potential for multiple versions.  Now all within iTunes Match you can simply adjust and enjoy a single aligned version - though worth noting that Smart Playlists and IOS devices are not a good mix with the current generation of iTunes Match.

  • Why have duplicate playlists suddenly appeared in my iTunes library?

When I come to sync my iPhone 5 (unfortunately using iOS 8) with my iTunes library, I hit the "music" tab and select "Selected playlists, albums, artists & genres". This has always worked free from hassle or problems. Now I have updated all my Apple devices to the newest software, there are duplicate playlists showing in the "Playlists" section, and my iPhone won't sync at all. Any suggestions? Surely I am not going to have to go through and delete each copy manually??? If that's the case, then sorry Apple, but I'm defecting. Since I installed iOS 8 I have had nothing but trouble. My MacBook Pro won't allow me to use iPhoto, my iPhone is all over the place, and I can't even make phone calls in my car (Hello?? It's a phone - I should be able to make phone calls), and my iMac iTunes account won't sync any more. HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • Why do I get duplicate playlists on my iPod nano?

If I add a song to a playlist on my Nano and then sync my iPod with my computer, it creates a duplicate playlist.  This seems silly, a duplicate playlist just because I added 1 song.  Why doesn't sync just update the playlist in ITunes with the new song from the playlist on my Nano?  I've been poking around the settings and I can't figure it out.  Any ideas?

  • How to delete multiple duplicate playlists in iTunes match?

itunes created 1500 duplicates of my playlists.

Apple's official advice on duplicates is here: Find and remove duplicate items in your iTunes library. It is a manual process and the article fails to explain some of the potential pitfalls such as lost ratings and playlist membership, or that sometimes the same file can be represented by multiple entries in the library and that deleting one and recycling the file will break the other.
Use Shift > View > Show Exact Duplicate Items to display duplicates as this is normally a more useful selection. You need to manually select all but one of each group to remove. Sorting the list by Date Added may make it easier to select the appropriate tracks, however this works best when performed immediately after the dupes have been created.  If you have multiple entries in iTunes connected to the same file on the hard drive then don't send to the recycle bin.
Use my DeDuper script if you're not sure, don't want to do it by hand, or want to preserve ratings, play counts and playlist membership. See this thread for background, this post for detailed instructions, and please take note of the warning to backup your library before deduping.
(If you don't see the menu bar press ALT to show it temporarily or CTRL+B to keep it displayed.)
The most recent version of the script can tidy dead links as long as there is at least one live duplicate to merge stats and playlist membership to and should cope sensibly when the same file has been added via multiple paths.

  • Duplicate Playlists when syncing with Media Go

Having a minor, albeit annoying, issue with Media Go. Pretty much every time I sync it with my phone, instead of just updating the playlists it created duplicates of the playlists so I end up with "R&B" and "R&B(2)" for instance. I have about 25 playlists and it really bugs me that after every sync it turns into 50 and I then end up having to manually delete the duplicates from File Explorer.
Anyone else encountered this issue or have ideas how to prevent it?

    What if you try this
settings > apps > all > walkman > clear data > restart your phone > check again.

  • Music app shows duplicate playlists

The music app on my wifes iphone 4 is showing duplicates for the recently played and recently downloaded playlists. also whenever a new playlist is created it shows twice on the list. some of theses cant be deleted. this is the only device that has this issue. is there any way to get rid of them?

You might try syncing all the music off her phone (by unchecking Sync Music on the Music tab of her iTunes sync settings, then syncing), then back on (recheck Sync Music, sync).  This should rebuild the music library and playlists on her phone, hopefully removing the duplicates.

  • Duplicate Playlist Problem

I have two playlists on my iPod Video that are exactly the same. I have tried reset my iPod and Syncing it etc but it still insists on giving me two of this specific playlist even though there is only one in iTunes. How can I delete one to only have one of this particular playlist.
    help please

As far as I am aware, the iPod Touch doesn't support playlist folders. I recall many posts when playlist folder syncing was first introduced about the function being missing from the iPod Touch and the iPhone. You can however confirm that if you wish by posting in the iPod Touch forum in case a subsequent software update introduced the option: Discussions - iPod Touch

  • Ipod nano with duplicate playlist

I have an ipod nano and I have a playlist called purchased. For some reason this playlist shows up twice on my ipod but only once on itunes. Any ideas on how to remove it?
I configured it on the summary/options to only synch checked items.
and not to manually manage music.

All you need to do is drag the little "Recently Played" icon to the iPod icon in the left-hand column of iTunes. (Your iPod has to be plugged in when you do this, of course.)
    Hope this helps.

  • Duplicate Problem in Playlists

Under my playlist section I don't have duplicate playlists, but folders. For instance, I have three 90's music folders, 3 audio book folders, 3 recently added, recently played folders etc. I've tried to delete them and leave just one like it's supposed to be but once I synced my Itouch, they came back again...
Also when I try to update Itunes, the new things to update are there 3 times too? Has anyone else had this problem and have an easy fix? Thanks in advance...

    Holy Smokes:
I appreciate your detailed workaround post. My question is this: I use iTunes to keep everything organized (though I'm well aware of the shortcomings...) and can use the simple solution that Chris from CA posted, but I don't have room to consolidate everything. My read on consolidating is that you copy from wherever you have your music located (and right now my music is outside of the MyMusic/iTunes folder, as that backs up to my work server) and so you have to have enough room for all of your music to be copied (and then you delete it from its prior location). That's how Apple describes it in, e.g., http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748. I ain't go that kind of room. Is there any way to make the move to a completely different PC by following the simple option? From the posting I just linked it sounds like you MUST consolidate whether you use you iPod to move things or use an external drive.
Of course, I can use your workaround, but I thought I'd ask first. Many thanks.

  • How can I import an m3u playlist into iTunes that intentionally contains duplicate tracks? I want the duplicates in this case.

For instance, if my M3u file looks like the 2 lines below, only one copy of the mp3 file is imported. I'd like the same track to be imported twice.
    Back To Black.mp3
    Back To Black.mp3
btw, the reason I'd like this to work is that I use a separater track in playlists between groups of similar tracks. This separater is not being imported correctly as is being unhelpfully recognised as an unwanted duplicate.
    Any advice appreciated.

    I just did the following.
Created a m3u file with a series of tracks with one entry duplicated.
Made a new empty playlist in a test iTunes library which did not contain the files and dragged the m3u file to that playlist.
It created a duplicate playlist entry for that one duplicated track but of course it points to the same file.  If you really want iTunes to duplicate the file you will have to trick it into thinking it is a different file.  Using your library management preferences (which are identical to mine) you will have to duplicate the file in Finder so you really do have two files and add it again.  Perhaps if iTunes was managing the media it would not behave that way and might add the file twice since dragging to iTunes with default preferences settings just places a copy on the iTunes folder and leaves the original in place, so you'd be dong hte equivalent of dragging twice (I'd have to test to check this since I don't use default settings either).  With your settings it just refers to the original wherever it is.  Hopefully I've phrased that well enough.
