Massive file size

I just finished remaking a file that has 3 artboards.
It's a binder, so it has a front, spine (smaller) and a back.
The elements are simple. Some gradients, some fonts with drop shadows, and 2 images. Nothing crazy.
The two images are both around 2MB in itself.
When I saved the document however, the total file size came out to be 42MB. That's not very server or sender-friendly.
Anyone have any idea why?

Images are stored as uncompressed when embedded, even more so when they are part of the design and use clipping masks etc.. It then doesn't matter what their compressed size was. It should not matter, however - unless there is a specific reason to send editable data, people use PDFs without the Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities option and flattened transparencies for getting such things to the printer or have it approved by their bosses...

  • FCP - Massive file size problem.

So I've been exporting out a 21min sequence out of fcp 7.  In past edits and on the same project file, the export has been fine, rendering out at a healthy 6gb.   But recently the final file size has become 29gb.  This is obviously not right.  My question is, what is going on and how can I fix it?
The only thing that has changed is I've done a color grade (from Color).  So some of the files are different,  but the new color graded clips aren't any bigger than the origianl ones, so I don't think thats the problem.
Another random thing that happend is:  When exporting I give the file a name, e.g. Helloworld   And I select show file extension.  The weird thing is when it's completed its export, the file name then becomes Hellowordmov.mov   I have not idea where that extra mov is coming from, (and it doesnt appear when I select show file extension).  What is going on here?
Below are my sequence settings.  I chose File -  Export -  Quicktime Movie...  And keep it on Current Settings.
    Any help is much appreciated.

  • Publishing AVI from Captivate 4 - why such a MASSIVE file size.

I've produced the AVI from Captivate 4 without a problem, but the resulting file is massive; over 500 MG for a project with 47
    slides.
The .cp file for the project is only 7 MG.  Why is the AVI so massive?  Is there something in my setup causing it or is it simply in how Captivate converts the SWF to AVI?
    Thanks for any input,

Codec selection is  more art than science. A few years ago, when I was playing with codecs more heavily than now, I fell in love with the Sorenson codec...only problem  was, no client machines had Sorenson installed.
So I either had to push Sorenson to the clients or figure out what the clients had and work with that.
That is pretty much where I am now, working within the set of codecs that everyone tends to have.
It was great fun exploring the best codecs, but if people couldn't see the results, that rather tended to diminish the effectiveness of the video.

  • Crazy File Sizes - Help!

    Hello,
I have a multi-part question about multi-page PDFs.  Two things are happening to me quite a lot with Acrobat and PDF creation, and I need some help figuring out what's going on.
    Thing 1:
I will receive a bunch of scanned music, each page scanned separately as a separate PDF ... and each one sent in its own separate email, resulting in 30-40 emails at a time ... from another user.  Each PDF page that gets sent to me tends to be somewhere around 500K.  My task is to use Acrobat to combine the incoming scans into a multi-page PDF.  The actual creation of the multi-part PDF is no problem.  Getting Started > Combine Files into PDF is a straightforward move, and that's what I do.  But the resulting multi-page PDF is HUGE.  I've tried optimizing, I've tried saving it as a Small PDF ... neither of those things do much at all.  I'm seeing file sizes around 5,000K by the time I'm done with an average-sized multi-page instrumental part (about 5-6 pages of music).
A big file size isn't necessarily a big deal, but I have to distribute these multi-pagers via email (that is the only electronic format that doesn't feel like alien technology to the people on the distribution list) and sending these big files in emails tends to be problematic.  Slow downloads, file size limits exceeded, etc. ... this big file size thing is really annoying.
I suspect the massive file size is caused by how the initial user scanned in the pages of music, but I can't control what the initial user does; I just have to work with what arrives.  Is there any way that I can fix this?
    Thing 2:
I noticed that when I used the basic set-up at Fedex/Kinkos and, using a scanner and Acrobat, scanned 8.5 x 11 copies of some music as a black and white document, combining my scans into one PDF as I went and optimizing them, a file that would have been around 6,000 K coming from the other initial user and being paged together by me ended up being 568 K using this method.
When I used my camera as a impromptu scanner and used the CamScan application to take a picture of a document and save it as a PDF, I was getting pretty ridiculous file sizes, 400-500 K a page.  Sam issue as with the PDFs coming from the initial user.
What is going on?  Is there something in the scanning method that affects how big the file is?  Is a flatbed scanner and Acrobat the only way to get small PDF sizes?
Thanks for any help you can provide...

yes it dus thanx so much.. man i dont no y i didnt see that in the first place :p i must be blind

  • Folio article file size increases massively with more buttons

    Hello,
we are about to finish up a DPS project and now have some serious problems with the folio sizes.
We did all the usual things to make folios smaller (cropped every image to the trimmed size, pdf articles, vektor overlays etc.)
So we made some tests and discovered a really strange behavior:
We have one single article with a fullscreen MSO containing 7 picture status, and seven buttons (with the same pictures as thumbnails) that lead to the appropriate statuses.
First we tried to experiment deleting images from the MSO but this had no effect on the file size. But as we deleted the seven buttons the file size changed from 10MB to 52MB!
The size of all the assets (images and ID file) from this article is only 12 MB.
Is this a known bug? Is there a way around it? It is some kind of crazy when an uploaded folio has 4 times the size as all his assets?!?!
    Thanks in advance,
    nils

    Hi Bob,
    sorry for my late reply.
I have done some additional testing and came to the conclusion that no button is responsible for the big file sizes.
It was the overlay setting after all (sorry for pointing in the wrong direction). As I switched the slideshow from "Raster" to "Vector" the file size decreased plenty. (I thougt I checked this but actually I did it only in vertical articles.)
However I did not know that the export format has such an impact on file size. This one article decreased from 52 MB to 17 MB. And it was only one slideshow with 7 (retina) images inside.
Changing all the slideshows in our 50 article folio (about 35) decreased the file size from 576 MB to 243 MB!
    Thanks,

  • Massive increase in file size

    Hi,
We have lots of experience creating images and software UIs but are new to video editing so apologies in advance if this turns out to be a noob question, We have seached this forum, other forums and google but have not found the answer yet so I hope you guys can help.
We have captured a screenshot video demoing some new software using MS Lync, the file is in mp4 format, the size is 16MB and the duration around 30 minutes. We then opened the file in Premier, cut out around 10 minutes of footage out, added 3 or 4 splash screens and a few fades between cuts.
The file was then saved using the lowest frame rate possible and 720dpi for YouTube quality. Somehow, despite the video duration being reduced by 30% the file size has increase by a factor of 8, from 16MB to 130MB!
How is this possible? Where have the additional 114MB come from? And most importantly how can we reduce the video back down to a reasonable size. Either we have misunderstood how to save videos to a reasonable size or YouTube have a server farm the size of a planet!

Understand that with most "video" such as a movie, commercial, documentary, etc. large parts of the image change with each and every frame, lots of motion, often EVERY single pixel changes from one frame to the next and that information all needs to be included in the compressed file. With computer screen grabs, things are usually very static, maybe only the mouse cursor moving around while the entire rest of the screen is the SAME frame after frame after frame. VERY easy to compress and that means small file sizes, also benefiting from low frame rate (10fps) and small frame size (800x600).
So, that is why the initial capture is so small, as the encoding settings are optimized for mostly static computer screens, totally different than "video". But then you encode using a 720p HD YouTube preset and that codec is designed for moving HD video compression and makes larger files then, even with same content as before. Hope this makes sense.
I have done computer training before with Camtasia and within that app, used Windows Media to encode the final clips and that did result in very efficient encoding, packing almost 4 hours or training into about 650mb, which would not happen with "video" content. Not recommending you use .wmv, just offering that comparison. So I don't know what encoding settings to recommend for your particular need - someone else can chime in - but just wanted to explain why you are seeing the different file sizes.
Also, not familiar with Lync and have no idea what compression format they are using to record with
    Thanks

  • Export QuickTime file with new audio and maintain the file size and quality as the original.

I shot some footage for a client yesterday and ran into an issue. To make a long story short I have QuickTime mov files shot with my Panasonic GH4 that have a buzzing sound in the audio track. I have clean audio from a recorder that can be sync'd. Is there a way for me to do this for the client and deliver them as the same QuickTime file but with the clean audio and keep the file size close to the original and not have quality loss in the image?
If so I will probably put all of the spanned clips together from each interview and sync the audio before delivery. I am just not sure which codec will give the client the same quality footage compared to the originals and not have a massive difference in the overall file size. They did request that they be Quicktime MOV files though so that is a must.
I don't see this as an option in the codecs in the export settings in PP, but is there a way to export as ProRes or another MAC native codec that will save them from having to convert it on their end? I am on a PC with Adobe CS5.5 so I am not too familiar with MACs, but from what I understand they would need to convert the files if I sent them straight out of the camera.
I found some related search results for this but they pertained to "Best quality" for export. I am not sure how the varying options work but I don't want to create files that are considerably larger, just not less quality.
If anyone has experience with this it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Cole

Here's the workflow: I imported the video footage into iMovie '08 and did my edits. Then I exported it (share) to my desktop with compression set @ 740 X 480. Then I used QuickTime Pro to fix the audio track. The file plays perfectly with both audio tracks working. It's a QuickTime file (.mov).
I hope this jars any replies as to why the file when uploaded to my iWeb gallery drops the second audio track.

  • Export to Word file size is huge

Sometime after the end of March, the "Export to Word..." action in Pages has started producing very large file sizes.  The Pages file itself will be 119KB, but after exporting to .doc, it will become 1.5MB.  I have to export Pages files to Word all the time, to submit files to submission systems that have max file sizes, so I've been unable to upload my files, which is obviously a problem (and didn't used to be).
To fix this I have tried... restarting.  I have deleted the Pages plists, restarted.  I have tried exporting on a different computer with the newest version of Pages, which produced the same file size result.  I have copy/pasted the text into a new file, tried again.  Etc, etc.  In the end, I had to borrow a friend's computer to pull the 1.5MB Word export into Microsoft Word itself and resave, to get the expected smaller file size of 47KB.
Please help.  Or, if there is no solution, I'll report as bug to Apple Feedback.  Thanks!

To my knowledge all Pages 5 Exports have been particularly bloated.
Since I have not considered Pages 5 worth using for serious work I can't compare between Pages 5.1 and Pages 5.2 as to whether the problem has actually got worse.
All I know is that Pages 5 files & Exports are massively bigger than Page '09 files & Exports.

  • Acrobat 7.0 - Print queue file size increase.

    Hi,
I'm hoping someone on these forums can help.
When sending a file to print the file size in the print queue can be many times larger than the original file size. For example a 1 page PDF file  762k was inflated to over 9.5Mb. Obviously this massively ties up our printer and is incredibly impractical when we deal with PDF's as a major portion of our work.
This doesn't seem to happen with pdf's downloaded from the web.
Currently we workaround by printing to our really old HP Laserjet 4000 TN this takes about 30secs a page, b&w and no duplex.
Our bright and shiny Bizhub C252 is effectively useless.
For various reasons our files are scanned at a pretty high resolution before being resized and worked on and there has been a suggestion that the pdf retains the resolution at which it was scanned and uses this when going to print.
Any help or advice would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hey, Jon
    Interesting...
Original file (300 dpi CMYK images) 23.8 MB
    Images 19 MB
    Color Spaces 0.8 MB
Optimize with flattening (72 dpi images, low quality) 68.7 MB
    Images 49 MB
    Color Spaces 18 MB
Optimize without flattening (72 dpi images, low quality) 68.2 MB
    Images 48 MB
    Color Spaces 18 MB
Not sure why color spaces are down to 18 MB from 22 MB, I used a preset that I THOUGHT was the same one I used yesterday. Regardless, it's bizarre that both images and color spaces are getting huge when optimized.
I used Create PDF from Multiple Files to bring in a bunch of pages, but I'm reasonably sure that all those files were already flattened before I brought them in.
I'll file that transparency tip for next time though, you never know when it might come up.
    Thanks.

  • File size changing when pass through after effects  (180Mb file goes in and comes out 33GB on export)

im processing a video recorded of an  interview where the lighting was not very good on the interviewee
im brightening up the light on the interviewees face
the file was a 180Mb  H.264 file on import
when i export the file its coming out at 33GB in size.... im not sure why this is
i have chosen the default setting "lossless" as the format for export
i just want the file to export the same size and quality as it was when i imported it
what options should i choose for this?    AE does not seem to tell me how big the end file will be and it takes 1 hour and half to process this 2 minute interview so it will take me an awfull long time to get to the bottom of this if i try by myself
    thanks

It doesn't "increase" the file size. You're making a brand new file.
What you put into After Effects has nothing to do with the resulting file. You can have an AE composition with no footage whatsoever and the resulting file will be much larger than 0!
After Effects works internally with completely uncompressed pixel data, so no matter what you toss into it, it produces whatever you tell it to produce. As Mylenium points out, you made an uncompressed final file.
Your original video file is VERY compressed. So, of COURSE uncompressed video is going to look massive by comparison.
Read Mylenium's link to understand a bit more and go here to learn AE: Getting started with After Effects There are lots of "gotchas" like this that'll bit your butt if you skip this basic training stuff.

  • File Size For Better Streaming

    Hello friends,
Couple of days before i have downloaded trial version of captivate 4 from adobe site. Using captivate 4, i try to make some training videos for my Jobs site
I have some basic clarifications when i work on adobe captivate.
    1. What is the recommended maximum size of training videos ?
    2. In case if i create a training video will be playing around 45 minutes, what will be the approximate size of final output swf file ?
    3. If i create 45 minutes video, will have any problem in streaming? (My site users mostly using 256KBPS speed broadband connection.) When i tested a sample swf file by uploading into my server, video starts playing only after whole file loaded in browser temp. Is this true?
    4. In case is this true, how can i stream my training video like youtube video? (Progressive display)
expecting great help from forum members and experts.
    Thanks in advance

Captivate 4 allows you to save your video as an .avi file which you should be able to load in YouTube. You can then link it straight from YouTube to your site. That could be an option.
The other questions depend on what you have in the video. Audio and video, animations etc all can create massive files. Usually its recommended to limit your projects to approximately 50 or 60 slides, but probably less if you have a lot of Audio or video.

  • IPhoto duplicates/messed up import? Different file sizes?

After transferring photos from our old Mac to the iMac, there are now many duplicate photos that I'd like to clear out. (My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong). There are numerous events titled Original and a second event of the same photos, although there may be more photos in the second event due to created duplicates that have been modified. Comparing the two events, the photo file sizes are smaller in the original set than in the second set. Why is that? For otherwise identical photos, which should I delete?
And is there any reason not to open iPhoto from the dock and delete duplicates?

(My partner did the transfer, so I can't tell you the specifics of what went wrong).
I can tell you what they did wrong - they Imported your old iPhoto library into the new one - NEVER import an iPhoto library into another iPhoto library - it does not work, created massive duplication and an unusable mess
You can use iPhoto and delete duplicates (do it in batches of 100 or less emptying the iPhoto trash and system trash every batch)
The better solution is to go back and do it correctly - If the old Mac is still available and working  trash the bad iPhoto library on the new system and Connect the two Macs together (network, firewire target mode, etc)  or use an external hard drive formed Mac OS extended (journaled) and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac and it will open the library and convert it as needed and you will be ready move forward.

  • Hyper-V 2012 R2 creating a new vhdx and copying from a source vhdx will physical file size reduce?

    Hi,
    I'm running Hyper-V 2012 R2 as part of Server 2012 Essentials.
As seems common from other threads I've read I have created an expanding VHDX with a maximum size too large (almost the same size as the physical disc it lives on). Although there is only around 350GB of data in the VHDX, the actual file size is approaching
    900GB on the host.
I'm using the "Add New Virtual Disk" wizard to make a new VHDX to replace this massive file. I want the contents of the old VHDX to be copied to the new one so in the add disk wizard I selected the option to copy the contents of my new disk from
    the original.
So my question is: the source VHDX is 900GB, the data inside the is around 350GB. What size is my new VHDX likely to be? Is it likely to reduce to nearer the actual data size?
I'm asking because I'm currently running this operation to an external USB drive and it's painfully slow - going to take hours to complete. If the size isn't going to reduce I may as well cancel it and look for a better option.
    Any comments appreciated.
    David

I am assuming that you are using dynamic virtual disks for your VHDX (they can be dynamic or fixed).
And, it is usually some type of transaction, backup agent, of the like that causes this type of behavior.  Some action that requires a cache on disk that is later deleted.
There is a shrink action that can be done, but that will not optimize fully.
The way to fully optimize is to mount the old virtual disk and create a new virtual disk and mount it, and then copy the contents from one to the other.  This lays the files out in a nice orderly way, without anything being written to the end of the
virtual disk causing it to expand strangely.
Over time, if you are still using the backup agent (for example) that got you into this situation, you will be there again.

  • How can I reduce imported AVCHD file sizes

Help! I have a Sony HDR SR1 video camera (AVCHD format) and I import files directly into imovie for editing. the problem is that imovie is creating massive files that are rapidly filling my 500GB disk. One minute of imported HD video (which imovie stores as a quicktime file) takes up about 32GB. It hasn't taken long to wipe out my disk at that rate.
Does anyone else have this issue? Is there a more appropriate way of storing the raw footage? The video camera only store 30GB on its internal disk and this is meant provide around 7 hours of HD footage. If the file sizes really do need to be that large is there anyone out there who's sorted out storage and backup routines?

One minute of imported HD video (which imovie stores as a quicktime file) takes up about 32GB.
If you are going to play with the big boys (full HD) you need big big equipment (LOTS of hard disk space).
Why not ask the question in the iMovie or FCP/FCE forums.
