Massive memory hog that freezes consistently

Ever since the update for FF7 came, I have experienced problems with the browser freezing on all pages. It doesn't crash & kick me out, the program will just lock up and stop responding. Not a matter of if, but when and it always freezes. After going to the task manager, I noticed that FF + plug-ins are using over 400,000K of memory space. I was using it a home & work. Now it has been taken off my pc at work and is the number 2 browser at home.

Are your mailboxes very large?
I think so. I generally keep just about everything.
Currently, /Users/dland/Library/Mail/ is about 600MB, with almost 425 of that for my work account. Of the 600MB, about 250 is in emlx files, 225 in the cache files, and the rest is distributed among other types. (Praise be to "Disk Inventory X.app" for the stats.)
Do you periodically rebuild them?
Not explicitly, although I will do so right now and report back.
Do you run the overnight system maintenance scripts?
Not usually -- the machine is off overnight. I think I know how to find out how to run them manually, so I'll do that and report back.
Are you using pop or imap?
IMAP (It's almost 2006, you know
Is mail automatically checking for new mail?
That's why I leave it on.
Is Spotlight indexing your mail?
I haven't told it not to, so perhaps so.
How is your hard disk space?
It's fine, thank you. And yours?
It's getting kind of full -- about 94% (much to my surprise).
Thanks for your help,
Dave

  • Yosemite and Mail massive memory leak and excessive CPU usage

    I've just installed Yosemite and upgraded to 10.10.2 via the AppStore. Now I have a problem with Mail sucking up all the CPU (>106% !) and memory (>8Gb and rising while doing nothing). Everything runs fine when I quit Mail. Very disturbing behaviour!
    I've tried several suggestions found elsewhere on the board here, such as turning off and even removing all Mail plug-ins including SpamSieve, but without positive results. I've tried un-selecting 'Store draft msgs on server', as well as the option for junk and sent msgs. but again without any difference. Going Offline within Mail also makes no difference to its memory hogging or CPU usage.
    I notice this is an issue that's been around since last year (wish I'd known that before upgrading to Yosemite today) and I am just completely flabbergasted that it still exists. Would've thought Apple'd have fixed it in the first but certainly in the second incremental OSX Yosemite release.
    Is there anything else I could try that's proven to be effective in stopping Mail's massive memory leak?

    Okay, I've run Disk Util and restarted. Seems to have made a little bit of a difference to the RAM gobbling in that it appears to be going at a slower rate, but it's still up at around the 45Gb after an hour. Here's the EtreCheck report in the hope that it helps.

    I ended up calling Apple Support twice. After first time when we checked drives etc, the second time they said we had done everything and it must be a hardware issue. It had to have a logic board replaced.

  • Acrobat 9 Pro a memory Hog

    I have a 175kb 2 page PDF file that I am updating a field in. On save, memory usage soars from about 300MB to well over 2GB causing massive memory swapping on my laptop which is configured with only 1GB of memory. I have trimmed down all necessary processes and this still happens and only when I try saving under Acrobet 9 Pro so I am pointing my finger at it. I am using a trial version of it which I am very happy about since I would not want to purchase this product if I can not save files. I have a Dell Latitude D520 with Intel Core Duo 1.66GHz CPU, 1GB memory running Windows XP Pro.

    > I am pointing my finger at it.
    I see you aren't looking specifically at memory usage for Acrobat. You
    can do this with Task Manager - the Mem Usage column in processes is
    virtual memory (not RAM).
    I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Acrobat doing this, but
    still, it's worth checking.

    This recently happened to me.  I am a novice, but it seemed like that project got corrupted some how.
    I deleted it.
    Went to time machine and picked it up again when I knew it was working ok.
    I lost a few hours of work, but not the entire project.
    Once I had the project back from time machine, it worked fine (but like I said, I lost a little bit of work).

  • IDCS5 Mac - Massive memory leaks - Followup to previous discussion

    Hello Everyone:
       After some painful, tedious marching though the code on the Mac, I found something really, really strange.  The code seemed to be working fine, except when a couple of documents were added in the scan jobs.  I isolated one of the documents and removed each object on the page until I came across the object that, when scanned, caused InDesign to report the massive memory leaks.
       The object was a quarter-inch by quarter-inch overset text frame (that's .63 cm by .63 cm for those of you who are used to the more sensible metric system).  In the text frame was a single character, not normally visible when on the page.  According to the ASSERT dialog box that was thrown up on the screen when InDesign was shutting down, this little bitty object was the source of 104450 leaks amounting to between 38,000,000 abd 51,000,000 bytes in leaks.  Here's the code where the leaks must be coming from (and Dirk, I owe you a crow pie...as in I'm gonna have to eat crow...I use PMString for one small command in this snippet, but it seemed so much faster and simpler than what the examples in widestring.h were suggesting):
    //  TI is TextIndex, assigned from a call to IMultiColumnTextFrame::TextStart()
    //  TS is int32 assigned from a call to IMultiColumnTextFrame::TextSpan()
    WideString Text;
    TextIterator beginTextChunk(FrameTextModel,          TI );
    TextIterator endTextChunk(   FrameTextModel, (TS + TI));
    std::copy(beginTextChunk, endTextChunk, std::back_inserter(Text));
    PMString PMText(Text);
    std::string text = PMText.GetPlatformString();
    IdentifyNamesInText(text);
    This final function call could not have been the source of the problem because one of the steps I took in tracking down the problem was to put "return" as the first line in its implementation but the bug still occurred.

    Hi, I don't know if this is relevant or not, particularly since we're on Windows and the problem you're seeing is on Mac.
    One of our guys put in some code to workaround a problem which he encountered using std:;copy with TextIterators under VS2005 (so it would have been CS4)
    /// Alternative to using std::copy to workaround issues using std::copy and TextIterator's in VS2005
    inline void TextIteratorCopy( TextIterator& posBegin, TextIterator& posEnd, WideString& strDest )
        std::back_insert_iterator < WideString > posDest = std::back_inserter( strDest );
        for ( ; posBegin != posEnd; ++posDest, ++posBegin )
            *posDest = *posBegin;
    that said, it might not affect you on the Mac, it might no longer be an issue with CS5 either.

  • Massive memory leak when using Google (normal search, inactive, but logged into Google+)

    Firefox has massive memory usage in recent times (runs up to over 3GB on Win7x64HP). I was not sure until now what caused it, since I have the browser open in the background most of the time. Commonly open pages are facebook, some news site (containing flash ads) and some other stuff for doing research. And Google - of course.
    Normally I killed Firefox completely whenever I recognized the memory usage was way above normal, but this time I just kicked the google tab and (after 2mins of HDD action) the mem usage dropped by 2GB! I have no idea what causes this, but the rise of allocated mem is always very slowly and seems to build up over the day (2-3 times stand-by or hibernation included). I also just realized that the google tab keeps cpu usage of FireFox constantly by around 2%. An important side note: FF automatically logs on to Google+, maybe that's one of the reasons.
    Has anyone the same issues? Is it rather a the fault of FF or Google? Will try surfing with Extensions deactivated the next days to see if the behavior continues...

    If you go to ''about:memory'' in the location bar you may find some of the info there of use, explanatory notes appear on mousover. It will help you figure out where the memory is going to.
    * see also [[high memory usage]]
    Some of the developers have been trying recently to improve how firefox uses memory, and have recently added ''about:memory'' as a diagnostic feature.
    Using 3GB of memory for firefox is obviously abnormal, however some sites you use may be fairly intensive. It does often take quite a bit of effort to track down such problems, but sometimes new problems are identified and then fixed: either problems with firefox, or with specific sites or software.

    Oddly, I don't really see that on any of my systems. What I do see is an occasional site that causes Safari to go nuts, using all available memory. I've seen that today on the Washington Post opinion pages. Not the opinion home, but if I go to any of the columns themselves, my memory gets maxed out, with Safari using >90% of available memory.
    Strange...

  • ML, Memory hog?

    OK, I'm strongly considering the low end MBP Retina, my dilemma is 8 vs 16gb memory especially since they can't be upgraded later. I'll be doing some photo & video editing on an enthusiats level, not pro or particularly savvy amateur BUT, it appears Mountain Lion is a memory hog.
    Any feedback or suggestions appreciated

    Lion was a pretty big memory hog. I would highly recommend it especially if you are planning on keeping the machine for more than 2-3 years as at that point the machine will probably be falling behind because newer operating systems will most definitely require more ram than current ones. Lion will load as much as it can into ram so I would highly suggest it!

    I bought iCloud memory via that same account no problem.
    When setting up iCloud on iPad you cannot have a primary iCloud account unless it has an email address .
    Made new account as per instruction ie [email protected] works fine
    BUT as I want to utilise the money spent on the additional memory it would be great to use the initial account set up as my primary HOWEVER as far as I have tried the initial apple ID CANNOT be changed. Bit confused actually any usefull guidance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

  • I have a 5th gen ipod nano that freezes when playing songs. i can't turn off, change songs, turn volume down. song stays stuck and nothing works at all. any ideas??

    i have a 5th gen ipod nano that freezes when playing songs. i can't skip, turn down volume, turn ipod off. it simply screeches as the song is stuck at a specific point. any suggestions?

    You have 2 options:  #1 - iPod Repair Tutorials
    #2 - take the iPod Nano to an Apple store or an AASP.  Whichever is more convenient for you.

  • Adobe Premiere CC freezes consistently

    Macbook Pro Retina 15"
    Intel Core i7 @ 2.2GHz (Turbo Boost to 3.4GHz)
    Intel Iris Pro Graphics
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    Adobe Premiere CC freezes consistently when working on a variety of project files. I am editing with .mov H.264 files from an external USB 3.0 drive and every 10-20 minutes, my preview window will freeze and the spinning wheel will appear. I have tried deleting previews, trashing preferences and Adobe folder, etc. but to no avail. The commonly-suggested fix for this is to turn off OpenCL GPU Acceleration but I don't see why I should have to run Premiere at half of it's full potential on a supposedly supported GPU, especially when I'm paying for a Creative Cloud subscription every month.
    I am surprised more people having issues aren't kicking up a fuss, considering the money you pay for the privilege of using these apps. Adobe, please get this sorted out or I will find myself, regrettably, moving back to Final Cut.
    If anyone else has any suggestions, then of course please throw in your two cents.
    -Josh

    It might also be your external harddrive. If you can try switching to Firewire (to me it seems more stable than usb 3.0). Also, make sure all your footage stays on one HDD (+ render files)
    Premiere supports ProRes for Macs, right? I think the best codec for you would be ProRes 422 HQ or LT if your machine cant handle it.
    Another thing you could check is software incompatibility. Turn off all other programs in the background including browsers etc.

  • How to create a header that is consistent and do you like iWeb vs. others?

    anyone know how to do this? want an image in the background that is 781x131 with a menu that is consistent on all pages with links to view the available pages. also want a sign up box in the header that is always in the upper right hand corner. can anyone guide me to do this?
    is there one great tips site for iweb?
    do you guys like it? anyone tried this vs. godaddy's website tonight or the microsoft office live? do you have a sample site you can share?
    thanks!!

    Make your image in whatever program you use and save for the web - this will compress so making it quicker to download. Insert said image into the text box at the top of the page.
    Make your links on this page as you want them to appear. Dupilicate the page as many times as you wish and rename the pages to correspond with the link titles. You then use the inspector pane to link each page to each other page.
    Hope this makes sense.
    This is one of my sites made with iweb on a blank template. There is at the moment only one page so no links. http://www.horleydrc.co.uk/petridge
    This site is made with Nvu and KompoZer so you can see or not the difference.

    The horleydrc site is separate but linked to the other sites.

    Hi,
    I have a Folder called "Pictures"  (My Pictures seems a bit "Windowsy" to me)
    I don't have a Media folder inside there.
    It would help to know if this is actually within the iTunes Library
    Having said that I tend to use Eric's Method.
    Pic of My own Card in the Contacts list
    It shows where I have used Faces (from iPhoto) and Defaults (Login pic choices for the Account pic).
    My iChat/Messages pic is the same Signature pic as used here and is in the Recents Tab on show.
    You can even use the Camera if one is attached (Mac Minis and Mac Pro require External Cameras).
    Drag and Drop is my preferred method.
