Master audio volume keyframes ignored in export - why?

I had the audio set to fade-in at the start and fade-out at the end via key-frames. During the preview works perfectly. Export to QT (H.264) and the audio fades are ignored... So, then I go back to the individual audio file and adds the fade keyframes to it. Erase the keyframe changes on the master audio track. Playback is good in both the preview and exported movie.
Why is Motion (2) ignoring the keyframe edits on the master audio?

You must set ducking clip by clip.
Also, the ducking seems to be set as a percentage of the volume of your main audio track. If your main audio track has some loud noises, the ducking will be a percentage of that, and your music may still overwhelm some of the softer sounds of the voice track.

  • When adjusting the audio volume in a selected region, why does it give me a curved line instead of straight and why cant I change it like i can with a fade in our out?

When adjusting the audio volume in a selected region, why does it give me a curved line as a transition instead of straight, and why cant I change the fade shape like i can with a fade in our out? When I slide thet volume all the way down it makes a very abrupt down curve. It's audibly noticdible.
    Thank you.

Use the range selection tool and select the portion of the clip you want to change the volume on. Drag the volume line down and FCP will create keyframes which you can adjust as you want to get a fade shape.

  • Audio Settings are ignored on export to SWF in Captivate 4. Advice?

Background: Project is a 1-hour, spoken-word PowerPoint slide presentation, about 60 slides, about 1 min each. Audio has been split into one CD-quality, mono .wav file for import to each slide. All clips are excerpts from the same, full-length .wav file. Nothing fancy, no captions, animations, etc. Just one dog and one pony in this show. Using fully updated version of Captivate 4.
Problem: Upon export to SWF, any changes I make to the audio quality settings do not take. That is, I still get a huge SWF file with full CD quality sound. SWF file size is ~47MB. Should be closer to ~25MB or even less at my target quality of 11kHz, 24kbps.
What I've tried: I have adjusted both the Audio Settings for the project, as well as the SWF Size and Quality settings (in the Preferences dialog box, Project category) by alternately selecting "Low" or unchecking the "Retain slide quality settings" box, then synchronizing the settings with the settings in the Audio Settings. I have also tried selecting and unselecting all SWF compression options.
I have tested this on two computers, one XP Pro, the other Vista Home Premium 64-bit. Both Captivate installations are fully updated. Same results on both.
Things that make me go "Hmm": I can create a Captivate project with one slide as a test and achieve full flexibility of audio kHz and kbps upon export to SWF; that is, it works just like I want. However, as soon as I add a second slide, my export quality reverts to full CD-quality. I've even tried this with an extremely simple project with no PowerPoint slide, no skin, just blank white slides. So, I do not think it is an issue connected to some other aspect of the project in question.
So... Is this a bug? The odd thing is that this process has worked in the past. It seems that it has suddenly become a problem. If it were on only one computer, I would reinstall, but given the same outcome on two very different computers, it seems very unlikely that the same quirk has materialized in both.
    Advice? Thanks. -Steve

    Hi Steve,
This is a long shot, but you could try copying and pasting all of your slides into a new instance of Captivate. If you have specified certain audio settings Captivate should pick these up when you export. If not then it is possible that your CP file has become corrupted.
If that doesn't work, please file a bug report using the web address I have included below.
Adobe Captivate Feature Request/Bug Report Form
It would be interesting to see if the CP team can shed any light on why this is happening.

  • Why is my iTunes insisting on 'determining audio volume' every time?

I upgraded to iTunes 9 a few weeks back and seemingly from that point onwards my iTunes application wants to 'determine audio volume' on a great number of tracks as soon as the program is launched.
The setting is unticked in Preferences on iTunes and on the iPod I synch with.
I don't want it to be doing this, especially as I'm quite happy to manually change this level if I feel its required, but can find no way of preventing it, aside from clicking on the 'x' in the top window whenever it starts - which is becoming tiresome.
I've tried deleting the cache file in Library > Caches and also starting up in Safe Mode and then opening again in normal mode but all to no avail.
    Help!!!

Make sure you have also unticked sound check in the burn settings dialog you get when you burn a playlist to disc.

    Hi Rob,
From the screen shots it looks like your script is not formatted properly (you may refer to 'Paladin Script' in 'Sample Project' to get an idea of how the script should be formatted.).
Further please follow the steps mentioned below to use Story to PP workflow.
Create a new Film script in Adobe Story
Create  scene heading – INT. LOCATION – Day (these will show up in the outline view panel on left hand side)
    Hit enter, hit TAB
Enter the name of the speaker, hit TAB or ENTER
    Copy over the transcribed text
    Build your script this way
Number scenes from the production menu
Export ASTX file for your script : File->Export->.astx
    Open Premiere Pro
Create a new project, bring in media
In the project pane, find the "Scene" column
For the clip that contains the spoken text, assign the same scene number to the clip as you have in the story script (lets say both are scene 1)
Click out of the scene box in the project panel in Ppro
Right click on the scene that you just assigned a scene number to and select – attach Story script
Select the .astx fle you exported in step 8
    Click ok
You should now see the script data in the metadata panel for the clip in the metadata panel.
You can now run speech to text based on "Embedded Script metadata" to time align spoken word to the script.
Let us know if this is helpful.

  • How do I get 10.4.8 AUDIO VOLUME back?!

My daughters' iMac G3 is like a freakin' megaphone now after updating it to 10.4.9. Why did Apple have to mess with audio volume levels? It was FINE the way it was. Now, in 10.4.9, the lowest volume setting is around the 50%-65% mark it was in 10.4.8.
I've ready other complaints elsewhere, now just want a solution. She's had it for months and we know the volume it produced, now, like I said, it's a megaphone and she even says its too loud (she's four).
    Help!

The max OS for a PowerPC processor Mac is Leopard OS 10.5.x. All higher OSs require a Mac with an Intel processor.
Here's the instructions if you have the discs.
Mac OS X: Changing or resetting an account password
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274?viewlocale=en_US
    Changing your administrator password
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.4/en/mh655.html
Here's one method to reset the password without the install disc:
    1. boot computer and hold the "apple" key and the "s" key.
    2. wait for terminal show
    3. release keys
    4. type without the quotes: "/sbin/mount -uaw"
    5. press enter
    6. type without the quotes: "rm /var/db/.applesetupdone
    7. press enter
    8. type without the quotes: "reboot"
    9. press enter
This will let you create a new admin account when you reboot your computer.
Also, without the discs, look at Mac OS X Tip - No Password, No Root, No CD? No Problem.
    http://www.macobserver.com/tip/2003/06/16.1.shtml
Here is a way to get around not knowing the admin password on Macs.
To reset your OS X password without an OS X CD you need to enter terminal and create a new admin account:
       1. Reboot
       2. Hold apple + s down after you hear the chime.
       3. When you get text prompt enter in these terminal commands to create a brand new admin account (hitting return after each line):
              * mount -uw /
              * rm /var/db/.AppleSetupDone
              * shutdown -h now
       4. After rebooting you should have a brand new admin account. When you login as the new admin you can simply delete the old one and you’re good to go again!
You'll have to buy (for over $100) a Leopard retail install DVD to get back to Leopard.

  • What is the cause of Master track volume resetting on it's own?

Ok, so you record a project. You create a Master track, adding volume automation to create a fade out at the end of the track. You adjust the volume the track plays at, using the Master track volume slider, until the playing track reaches the fade out region at the end of the Master Track. Correctly, the track fades. With cycling of the track, the track begins again, but the Master Track volume slider reverts to a lower volume, at which it remains throughout all subsequent cycles. This happens whether or not the master track is locked throughout. Why doesn't it stay at the volume you originally set?
The only time the volume should alter, surely, is when the automation curve tells it to reduce to zero, at the end of the track?
This thing is causing me a good deal of lost time.
    Ontradio.

    Nick,
I would recommend testing your counters in MAX using Test panels to help narrow the issue. Next I would then try and run one of the examples in LabVIEW that is doing the same counter operation you are performing in your application for example, simple event counting. Find out if you are still getting the same error. This will narrow in on where the error is occuring and why.

  • Low audio volume in DVD SP

I've been experiencing low audio volume with burned DVDs in DVD SP 4.
The audio volume is fine in FCP, and also in the self-contained exported QT file.
But once imported into DVD SP and burned to a DVD, the volume is almost cut in half on multiple projects. The DVD's are short (< 30 minutes) so the audio is left as an AIFF file rather than converting it to an .ac3 with Compressor.
I don't see any way to control the volume in DVD SP.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,

    G5 dual 2 gig   Mac OS X (10.4.7)   4.5 Gigs Ram

There's no way to control volume in DVDSP.
I had the same problem, but I had an ac3 file through Compressor. And there was this feature in it called "dialog normalization" that I had to turn off (setting it at -31dB), and my levels were good.
If you can't solve your problem with AIFF, maybe try ac3, and see if it suits you.

  • Adjusting Audio Volume Levels

Often, one has Audio that is too loud, or too soft. Sometimes, they have added a music Track, that needs to drop down to clearly hear the dialog from another Clip. While there are Audio-editing programs, like Audition, SoundBooth, and even the free Audacity, PrE, or PrPro can handle such adjustment just fine. These adjustments can be made for the entire Clip, or can be Keyframed over time.
First method, and not one that I recommend, is to adjust the Audio Gain of the Audio Clip. This is done by either Rt-clicking on a separate Audio Clip, or by first Alt-clicking, and then Rt-clicking on a Muxed Audio Clip (Multiplexed with both Video and Audio in one file). Then, one would choose Audio Gain, and adjust that. This method will also allow one to then adjust the Volume by a greater amount, and has the bonus of increasing the Waveform Dislay vertically.
The next method is to look at the Audio Clip (or the Audio portion of a Muxed Clip), and click-drag on the yellow-orange “rubberband” for Volume, and move it up, or down. This can be Keyframed, but the next method is much better and more precise, in my estimation.
My first choice is to adjust the fixed Effect>Volume. This is done from the Effects Control Panel, and it is very easy to Keyframe these adjustments over time. This is much more accurate, and actually easier, than click-dragging the rubberbands in the Clip itself. Accessing the Effects Control Panel is slightly different, from PrE to PrPro. In PrE, one would Select the Audio Clip, then go to the Effects Tab, and choose Edit Effects, locating the Volume Effects and twirling it open to view the slider. In PrPro, if one does not already have the Effects Control Panel in a Pane in the GUI, it would be accessed from Window>Effects Control Panel. With the Audio Clip Selected, one would locate the fixed Volume Effect, twirl that open, and make the same adjustments, including Keyframes, if necessary. These will be Clip Keyframes, and will follow that Clip, where ever you move it. This is a difference from the next method.
My other choice would be to use the Audio Mixer (Window>Audio Mixer, if not open), and to automate the Volume settings. This is accomplished by playing the Timeline and adjusting the sliders for Volume for each Track. In PrPro, one would first set the Send to Write, or Touch, to make those adjustments, then switch back to Read, when done. There are no adjustable Sends in PrE, so one is always in Read, until adjustments are made, and then it’s set to Write, but you will not see this change. After you are done, you can playback the Timeline, and watch the slider(s) automatically move. These will be Track Keyframes, and will remain on the Track, regardless of what Clips you add/remove from that area of the Track. Unlike the Clip Keyframes, these will NOT follow the Clip.
One can toggle the Keyframe of an Audio Track between Clip, or Track. Also, the default frequency of Audio Track Keyframes in PrE & PrPro is a bit high, in my opinion. I drop these down a bit in Edit>Preferences.
For the Keyframing, one can alter the Velocity of the Keyframes to Bezier from Linear, and the adjustments will be a bit smoother. Besides the Bezier, one can use Ease-Out and Ease-In, which are Bezier, but basically in a Preset. In PrPro, one has several different Bezier options. In PrE, one is a bit more limited.
For setting the Volume, I recommend that one only glance at the Levels Meters (unless they are peaking in the red), and instead use a pair of high-quality headphones (noise canceling models are worth the money), or fully calibrated studio monitors. Let your ears make the decisions for you, as the dB settings should only be a starting point.
In PrPro, one can also Rt-click on the Audio Clip, and choose Edit in Audition (if you have it installed), or Edit n Soundbooth (if you have one of the suites).
Here is a look at Audio Keyframes in PrPro 2.0. Things are similar in PrPro later versions, and also in PrE, with the above noted differences:

I had a similar problem recently.

Reverted to running sound into capture card then from capture card to sound card.

  • Determining audio volume

When I opened iTunes last night, it began to scan my files and it says its "Determining Audio Volume". We did not select this, don't know why it started and don't know how to stop it. Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I had the same problem and determined it started when I burned a CD and used sound check. Even though I did not have sound check turned on in preferences, playback, it was still checked for burning. I burned a new CD, and unchecked sound check there and the determining audio volume stopped.

  • "Determining Audio Volume" question

    Hello,
While fooling around on iTunes, I somehow changed a setting so that the rectangular window at the top of the screen, which normally shows the song being played, the status of syncing, etc., now shows the message, "Determining Audio Volume" and appears to be running through all the songs on my Mac. I can click the "X" to the right of the window and that stops the activity for the time being, but the next time I open iTunes, it starts all over. I can't figure out how to stop this activity.
    Any suggestions?

Let it finish? How many years should I wait? iTunes is totally disabled by this "feature". If I stop the Determining, the program freezes and I have to force quit. If I try to select a song while it's doing this, the same. I have un-installed and re-installed and gone back to prior versions and used previous libraries and yada yada ad nauseum. Why is support so poor? My impression is that this application just ties itself in knots that cannot be untangled. I have no videos, no podcasts, no state-of-the-art stuff, but I do a lot of live recording (mp3s and WAV files) and want to archive and manage it in iTunes (what alternative do I have?), and it seems utterly deficient for that task. Whenever I try to play anything on the computer, the audio defaults to iTunes, and that's the end of that. I've tried Audacity, but it's slow and cumbersome and doesn't burn audio cds.
Why is iTunes so problematic, and why do we have to wade through thousands of discussions with helpful titles like "help" to look for solutions? I've had Macs since 1984, and this is just sad.

  • ITunes is automatically determining audio volume on my files

Whenever I open iTunes it begins automatically "determining audio volume" for my podcasts. I don't know why it's doing this. When I click on the x in the window it stops, but if I close iTunes and reopen it, it starts again. How can I make iTunes stop doing this permanently?

I have the same problem with automatically "determining song volume" every time I launch iTunes, and it's with over 40 GB of music, a real pain in the neck. I believe it might have something to do with how you import songs from a cd or how you burned a cd and reimport them. If you burn a cd with the "use soundcheck" option, this might be the culprit, but I don't know how to adjust the whole library to forget soundcheck altogether. I tried selecting all tracks, get info, and setting them all to 0 under options for volume adjustment, but that didn't work. Anyone else have any ideas?

  • Audio volume low

Could domeone help me with audio recorded in QT directly from the video camera? The audio volume of the .mov file is very low although it's turned to maximum. When the same clip is uploaded from camera to Final Cut Pro the volume of audio is normal. When this clip is exported from FCP to QT the audio of the .mov is loud and clear.

This is a BUG.  It has been submitted to engineering many times - unfortunately Apple has not done anything about it.   We have 5 Mac Pros,  all 5 do the same thing after updating to Yosemite.   The  PRAM / SMC reset is useless -  we even  installed a fresh  OS on one of the machines (a suggestion of the level 2 Apple tech)  same problem.   Clearly this is a system level bug.   Only way to get it resolved is to keep pounding the bug report site with requests.     The squeaky wheel gets the oil.   The problem is 100% repeatable on the machines that exhibit the bug.
In the mean time  set up an applescript with this command and it will reset the sound - do not include the brackets :
<do shell script "sudo killall coreaudiod" with administrator privileges>
Run it every time you wake from sleep and you won't have to deal with the problem ever again.
Pretty lame that Apple has not fixed it even though the problem appears to be pretty widespread.
