Master Data Activation on BW on HANA

Hi all,
I just wanted to check what really happens in the background with regards to Activation of Master Data when using BW on HANA ?
I have seen some information saying that you no longer need to activate Master Data when using BW on HANA(BOH), but how else do changes to Master data get seen if you don't activate them.
Is locking on Master data an issues when using HANA, when multiple users are trying to update the same Master Data ?

That piece of information seems to be quite new.
If possible, could you please share the document or link where you have seen that.
As of my knowledge, it's important and necessary to activate masterdata/attributes even to enable the latest features like 'Automatic Generation of HANA views'.

Hi S,
Although they seem to be the same there are differences.
Master Data activation.: When you load master data, they are loaded as D or M versions. Check the table as /BI0/P<infoobject tech name> , you will see different versions, if you have not activated your master data yet.
Note : If you are checking for SAP standard objects, drop the 0 eg table for 0MATERIAL would be /BI0/PMATERIAL.
When you activate master data, all D and M versions of records get transferred into A or active versions. So after activation, you should not find anything other than A versions.
ACR: The use of an ACR is two fold. 1st use is that it performs the same action as a master data activation automatically.
The 2nd function, is that it realligns the aggregates for the changed attributes
let me give you an example.
You have an aggregate based on material group which is an aggregate of material.
Consider that you have a material X which initial belonged to group A.
The aggregate would look like this
Material Material Group Keyfigure
X A 100
Now you change the material group of the same material as B
The aggregate would not change automatically....ie it would still be X A 100
To realign the aggregate,you use an ACR. After running an ACR, the aggregate would look like
X B 100

Master data activation is activating the master data once you extract the data from source system the data will be in inactive state, so in order to make the data available we will activate the master data.
Attribute change run :Its used to update the newly changed master data records to the Hierachies and aggregates.
If you are already using the available master data in aggregates in InfoCubes, you cannot activate the master data individually. In this case we will use attribute change run.
For attribute change run we have direct tcode: RSATTR or In the main menu, choose the path Tools Hierarchy/Attribute Change.

Master Data Activation

Hi All,
I have to activate a Master Data. When i use the path > select MD & right click & Activate MD, it displays a message that:
" The master data cannot be activated directly since attributes of the characteristic MD are used in aggregates
Start the change run via Admin. Workbench->Tools->Apply Hierarchy/Attribute Change, to activate the master data "
When i use the path Admin. Workbench->Tools->Apply Hierarchy/Attribute Change to activate the MD, it again gives me the following message:
" Hierarchy/Attribute change canceled (protocol/short dump) ".
I am not able to analyze the problem. Kindly treat it as urgent.

Just De Activate the Aggregates for Some time, create a Process chain for following tasks,
1) Deactivating the Aggregates.
2) Schedulling the Master Data Attributes and Master Data.
3) Activate the master Data.
4) Schdulling the Transactional Data through Info package.
5) Activating the Aggregates
Assign the Points if Helpful.

Master Data activation error after transport

Hi,
we have a problem in a custom master data. In development system we add 2 navigation attribute to the master data and then we transport in quality system.
After the transportation of the IO the master data bacame inactive in quality and there is no way to reactivate them.
The message error is the following:
Charateristic ZAA_COB: Navigation attribute ZAA_COB__ZCTB00001 switched on (-> N.B long text)
Characteristic ZAA_COB: Size of X/Y table does not fit P/Q table
Error when activating InfoObject ZAA_COB
We tryed with Tx: RSRV but the check produces dump error
We tryed with a second CR with the only IO involved but the error was the same.
We cannot delete the master data content.
Any suggestion?

Error when activating InfoObject ZAA_COB

This obviously means something is wrong. Take help of BASIS folks too to understand the Short-Dump.
We tryed with a second CR with the only IO involved but the error was the same.
We cannot delete the master data content.
Since its Test, could you delete the data in all InfoProviders that use this InofObject, then, Delete Master Data and then re-transport. Later, load all these InfoProviders. Its one option.
Obviously all the involved attribute are already transported in Test system. I tryed to adjust with se14 the M (view), X (SID) and P table of the master data tables. Now I have the two attribute only in the attribute tab of the IO but in all the tables they disappear.
Did you do the "S-table too". not that it matters, since you are already there, you can complete it. Also, don;t get tempted to Delete Master Data from SE14 no matter what.
I tryed to re-transport but i have always the same error.
I already gave you option-1 above. Here is my thinking.
Option-2: Go to DEV. Open the main InfoObejct in change mode. Go to the Attributes tab. There, there will be a small box where you can give numbers. Why don't you re-number them from "1" till the end. This is the sequence of how the attributes show up in pop-up boxes.
ext, run the RSRV test on the InfoObject in DEV.
After you do this, collect this InfoObject in a new transport and move it to Test.
I am not sure it wil solve the problem, but its worth a try.
But look into OSS notes on specific error message that you got. If I think of anything else, I will get back to you.

in my dissertation I compare different methods of how to activate Master Data.
What methods for activating Master Data are there? I know the following:
directly setting OBJVERS from M to A
using a function module e.g. RSDMD_MD_ACTIVATE
What are disadvantages of directly setting OBJVERS from M to A?

I am not sure if setting the field to A alone will work - the reason being that there is a host of other activities being performed - like :
Generation of SIDs for new values...
Check Aggregates and TREX Indices where this exists - the reason for this is that once you activate master data - the particular info object will get displayed in the Attribute change run monitor.... and hence you will have to account for all these..
Once you go through the function module that you have highlighted and drill into the code you will understand what is happening...

Urgent| Master data activation error

Hi All,
I am getting error in activating the master data. The error is in filling the SID tables.
Actually I have added a new attribute in Master Data, now i want to make it as navigational attribute. But when i try to activate my master data it gives an error.
But if we try to activate master data without making it was navigational (i.e. keeping as only display) the master data gets activated.
Please help me in this as it is very urgent.

Hi,
If your attribute characteristic you want to make NAV is brand new, first try to maintain its master manually with a value; activate the master data.
then try to reactivate your NAV in the other characteristic.
If this still doesn't work try the following
1. keep the attr as display for the moment
2. via menu Extra / DB Tables in RSD1, Fill attr SID table
3. reactivate the IOBj

Master data activation by process chain

hello all,
As I have seen that we have to right mouse click and activate master data after loading so that we can report on it. Thats a essentila step right?
How can we achieve that in process chain, when we run infopackage to load master data do we add some other variant to activate that data ?

yes we can acheive this using process chains, create a variant on this , in the process chains screen on the left side, u can see "ATTRIBUTE CHANGE RUN" in "OTHER BW PROCESS"

When u load master data and its attribute to ur data target and if u change any data or attributes of ur master data,in order to update new data to ur data target attribute change run is performed.
When u create a characteristic and if u keep it as master data and activated..it is master data activation
Activating Master Data
When you update master data from an SAP system the master data is imported in an inactive state. You must activate the new master data so that it can be accessed and used for reporting purposes.
For more information, see Versioning Master Data.
Choose the path InfoObject Tree Context Menu of Corresponding Characteristic Activate Master Data.
Upon Activation there are two scenarios to choose from:
The Corresponding Master Data Is Already Being Used in Aggregates in the InfoCube:
If you are already using the available master data in aggregates in InfoCubes, you cannot activate the master data individually. In this case, proceed as follows:
1. In the main menu, choose the path Tools Hierarchy/Attribute Change.
2. Proceed as described in System Response upon Changes to Data: Aggregate.
The system now automatically restructures and activates the master data and its aggregates.
Please note that this process can take several hours if the volume of data is relatively high. Therefore, you should simultaneously activate all of the characteristics that are affected by changes to their master data, at regular intervals.
The Corresponding Master Data Is Not Used in Aggregates:
Choose the path InfoObject Tree ® Context Menu of Corresponding Characteristic Activate.
The system now automatically activates the master data so that it can be used directly in reporting.
If there is any change r newly added records in master data..then that particular data will not b avialable for the reporting unless u do activate master data...
if u r using aggregates and then there is any change in master data ...then that particular master data change wil not b available for the reporting unless u do arrtibute change run for that info object.(T-code RSATTR)
Master data attributes and hierachies are used in cube aggregates also. So to do update the latest master data attributes values in the aggregtes attribute change run need to be performed.So Attribute change run also updates the master data attributes in aggregates which is not apart of master data activation.
Text loads do not need attribute change run. Attributes, hierarchies and aggregates need attribute/hierarchy change runs. If you do not have aggregates, just activating the master data is same as attribute change run.

Master data extraction from R/3

hi all,
i'm getting issue while activating master data for listing conditions.
under RSA5 in R/3, i've activiated and transferred 0RT_WLK1_ATTR datasource. In RSA6 same is transported.
but when i check for data in RSA3 0 records are found. the extract structure ROXAXA0011 is based on view V_WLK1_BW. When i check for data in SE11, table WLK1 shows 18,000 odd records, but V_WLK1_BW is not showing any record.
is anything missing? process of master data activation is correct or somting is missing.

yes, basically it is the same. The attr. and hierarchy change run is doing a bit more than just activating the master data. It is also adjusting aggregates to the possible made new alignments for navigational attributes. To schedule it, just goto rsa1->tools->attr. and hierarchy change run. Click on selection, enter a start date and time or any other start condition, apply a period if you want to have it running regularly and automatically, save that settings and click on Run/Execute.

Master data avtivation problem

i have a master data activation problem ,
after loading the master data i run the attribute change run it is sucessfully compleated ,but the proble master data tables is not updated status is still in 'M' version in 0Person table

i want to activate this      'M' version to 'A' version\

I am also facing the same problem(activation of master data) but with 0COSTCENTER. I have checked records in CSKS table in R/3 system. I could not see any M version records lying there.I have done fresh reload and ran successfully attribute change run also.

Difference between a Change-run and Activate master data

Hi experts,
Could you tell me what is the difference between making a change-run on a masterdata (rsa1 --> Tools --> Apply Hierarchy/Attribute Change...), and making a right-click on this masterdata and click on "Activate master data" ?
The result seems to be the same, all rows in version M (Revised) are changed in version A (Active)...

Change run will update the master data changes in Aggregates and update the object master data as well.
Activate master data will only activate the new records and it will not update the aggregates.

Can you please suggest how can attribute views created based upon BW Master Data Info Objects. For example 0Material .
As we know that we views gets created in HANA automatically once the infocude or ODS is activated in BW on HANA. Similarly how can we create attribute views in HANA based upon Master Data info obejcts in BW.

Understand that we can import master data tables into HANA Studi but how about data but i dont think that data gets loaded via this only the table definitions gets imported from meta data repository in BW.
