Master DVD - to de-interlace or not??

I'm mastering a 90 minute docu to DVD. The original is HDV. I'm using Compressor to make the MPEG2.
Half the audience will see it on their computers, the other half on their NTSC screens. Is there a 'standard' protocol out there now for DVD's? Whether to de-interlace for better computer LCD viewing, or leave interlaced for NTSC screens?
All ears,
Ben

I also did a short production in HDV and made copies in SD DVD and then compressed to h.264 for web. You can see the result here:
link:[http://www.kpbs.org/artsevents/books/enriquesjourney]
I know it's small, not my decision or dept. but as you can see there are no interlacing issues. I did not deinterlace, just simply converted the file to h.264. If you are wondering I cut it in native HDV and not ProRess.
If in doubt simply make a 30 second version of your doc in the final formats it'll be and view then how the viewers will. Hope this helps.

  • HDV to MPEG2 - de-interlace or not?

I need to catch up. I'm outputting HDV 1080i to MPEG2. Normally I've just done this straight through Compressor, default setting... Looks find on a TV set (anyone remember those things?).
But so many are using computers and LCD screens now ... the interlacing is a bit obvious. Should I be de-interlacing for my DVD MPEG2's now?
I tried a quick de-interlace through Compressor. Bad. If I should be de-interlacing, what would you recommend as a de-interlace formula? I do have Joe's Filters, and perhaps two or three other de-interlace plug-ins, plus FCP's de-interlace filter. Any suggestions would be most appreciated.
    Ben

De-interlacing is not the magical cure-all that many seem to to think.
The reason? It throws away half of the vertical resolution. Your 1080 is now 540 lines. So much for HD.
DVD Video standard compliant discs aren't HD.
When you play your DVD on a set top player with a CRT screen, it will be displayed correctly.
Using the DVD player in Mac OS X, there is an option in the View menu to de-interlace on playback with three quality settings. The best one is "Adaptive" and only applied as and when needed.
LCD television displays have similar settings. All are preferable to stripping out half the information in your master file before it has even been burned to disc.
Best solution: shoot and edit in 1080P.

  • SOLMANUP where to find upgrade master DVD?

We're upgrading sol.man. 701 to 71. I've used mopz to download all files, I'm using SOLMANUP to run the upgrade.
I'm still in the "Extraction phase", where I'm supposed to point out the directories for the upgrade. It complains for
"Enter at least the mount point containing "Upgrade master DVD"  The requested Data Carrier is not mounted on any of the mount points you entered."
Where can I find Upgrade master DVD? At SWDC there are only Installation master DVD. and that is not working. Do I need to download the whole 12 files of Upgrade Export DVDS?
I can't find any logfiles to check what files sapup is looking for.
Why the h-l doesn't mopz supply all needed files for an upgrade?
    Please advice!

    Hi,

  • Installation Master DVD Distributed Java System Copy menu missing

    Hello Gurus
We want to perfom an Java system copy of our EP 6.0 using sapinst
The source OS is Solaris 8.0 with Oracle 10.2.0.2
The target OS is Solaris 10.0 with Oracle 10.2.0.2
Our architecture is Distributed , CI is running on a system and DB server on another system.
For this operation we use the master DVD 51033746_12 but we have an issue in exporting the DB as the
Option for exporting the DB on a Distributed system is not displayed on the sapinst Menu .
We followed the last guide taken from sap 'Homogeneous and Heterogeneous System Copy for SAP Systems Based on SAP Web Application Server Java 6.40 SR 1' and this option should be listed
    Excerpt:
Choose the installation service SAP NetWeaver u201904 Support Release 1--> Java System --><DB> --> Distributed System --> Migration - Database Export.
Unfortunately the Distributed system is not displayed and though we are stuck at the export step .
I could not find any sapinst patches . Is it a known issue for Soalris system and is there a Workaround .
    Thanks for your help
    De Palma Lionel .

    Hello
Thanks for your answer . Unfortunately this option is not available as we are using a NW04 SR1 system , not a nw'2004's one . With the latest master install (Installation_Master_6.20_6.40_05_08 51033746_5 )we have the choice of
System copy  Source --> Java system --> oracle --> Migration Data  export
-->  HA Java system --> oracle --> Migration Data  export
System copy  Target --> Java system --> oracle --> Central system-> Migration Data  export
Target --> Java system --> oracle --> Distributed system -> Migration Target Central instance / Db instance install
The Distributed system is available for Import option but no for the export one .
    My questions are :
    - Can we use a master nw2004's master DVD for system copy on a Nw'04s one ?
    - As the central instance is hosted on different system than DB instance , should I use the HA option ?

  • I've created a prproj file and want to create a master DVD.  Is there a simple way to do this?

I've created a prproj file and want to create a master DVD. Is there a simple way to do this?

I'm not sure I would call disk authoring a 'simple' process.  Unless it's a very basic disk, or course, with but a single timeline and no menus.  But the kind of disk we're using to seeing from Hollywood is anything but simple to create, and so not so simple to explain.
Might be time for some research.

Let me know what other info you need.
    Thanks for your help.

Yes, the lowest possible Burn speed will be a step in the direction of compatibility.
As for the Quality setting, Robert Johnson has done tests on various versions of PE and has recommend a setting of about 7.8 (IIRC). Unlike Encore, where one has many more choices, PE limits one to a Quality setting of 8. This is about equivilent to the recommend 7MB/s in Encore. Robert found that just below the 8 max. actually yielded slightly better results, than did the full 8, on his tests.
The three things that help to insure the greatest compatibility with set-top players are, and in pretty much this order:
1.) Quality media - Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden or Falcon (US only)
2.) Burn speed (slower is better. It might take a few minutes more, but if it works, you don't have returns or have to do it again.)
    3.) Bit-rate around 7MB/sec
Remember - no set-top player HAS to play any Burned DVD. Most do, but some just do not - only replicated, pressed discs. Also, some player are still sensitive to the -R and +R media types. This is less a problem with newer units, however it still could be an issue with many older ones.
Personally, I test a "master" on four different players, plus my computer, before I Burn a batch, or ship out any. One unit is a very high-end Marantz, another is a mid-level Marantz, one is an RCA "el cheapo" and the other is an older Pioneer. I figure if the disc plays everywhere, there is a good chance that it will play for the client - though there are still no guarantees.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • HD Upper or lower interlace or not that is the question

Ok Im a bit confused and cannot seem to get a straight direction on this. I shoot in 30fps 1080i, I capture in HD via firewire, I edit and when outputting for regular DVDs do I encode UPPER FIELD first since the source media is HD or LOWER FIELD first because it is doing to DV.
When encoding with Media Encoder should I check the deinterlace button when encoding HD for a DV project going to encore or not check it...that is the question.
Where is my Commedore 64 when I need it?

Choose the correct field order for your
export format when exporting, in this case DV.
Choose progressive/interlaced depending on your export format when exporting. Since DV is interlaced, do not de-interlace.
    Who needs a Commodore 64 when you have a Vic 20! ;)
    Cheers

  • To interlace or not to interlace...

I've got a project where I'm mixing HDV 720P and DVCAM 60i footage. I'm using ProRes as my timeline codec. My final destination is DVD. So to maintain the sharpest image for TV on DVD playback I'm wondering whether I should have interlacing on in Sequence Settings. I know that Compressor will interlace anyway as part of the DVD Best Quality transcode, so I'm wondering whether interlacing in my timeline is good or bad for my footage, particularly the progressive stuff. Or is the difference negligible? Any thoughts? Just to complicate matters I also have some HDV 1080i shots as well. They have the shift fields filter applied to modify from upper to lower.

    joey848 wrote:

That's not actually correct. If your timeline is 23.976, Compressor will just leave it at 23.976 all the way through the MPEG-2 encoding process. You'll end up with 23.976 footage on your DVD, and the player itself — the actual piece of home-entertainment equipment — will be responsible for inserting pulldown if necessary.
The question you're asking isn't whether your timeline should be interlaced or not. The question you're asking is whether you should conform your 60i footage to 60p, or conform your 60p footage to 60i.
There's no easy answer in this case, because you're not just conforming timebases. You're also scaling. You're taking 720p60 and 1080i60 footage down to 480. That means you're going to be destroying any field structure in your HD footage anyway, by scaling it down.
Since none of your source footage is p24, it makes no sense to work at 23.976. Since DVD only supports 480p24 and 480i60, that leaves you with just one practical option.
So the bigger question becomes at what point you should conform everything to the same size and timebase. My gut tells me you're going to get the best results by running all your 720p60 and 1080i60 footage through Compressor, with frame controls on, and having it scale everything down to 480i. (You didn't say whether your finished product will be anamorphic or not; whether you go anamorphic or pan-and-scan to 4:3 or letterbox is up to you.)
You might try doing a test. Set your timeline to 480i60 (either anamorphic or not, depending on what you prefer) and drop in some 480i60, 720p60 and 1080i60 footage. Throw some transitions across cuts, whatever you think you're going to be using in your show. Render it all out to ProRes with your render settings set to best. Put it on DVD, see what you think of it. It might be entirely satisfactory.

  • IPod Classic 160GB film library sync problem -  trying to sync films that have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store - all other libraries sync perfect - why?

Hello Apple and the iTunes Windows PC users community.
I am trying to sync films that I have converted from purchased DVD to mp4 format locally, not purchases from the online store. The mp4s all appear and play successfully in my iTunes application but will not sync across to the iPod film library folder.
For your information: I am using iTunes 11.1.3.8 on a Windows 7 64bit machine with 500GB hard disk and 8GB of Ram in the UK.
I have restored the iPod classic 160GB three times now to see if it was a hardware problem with no joy. Each time all the music restores properly as do the podcasts and all the items in TV programmes all appear to sync and work fine.
I have also tried to copy films into the TV Programmes to get around it with no joy. They always go to the films section to start with. It is just the Films library that does not sync - all others work perfectly. As a last resort I have uninstalled and re-installed iTunes with no joy either.
I am technically savvy and have gone through the itunes and ipod settings but nothing appears to make a difference - This is the first time I have had to post here as I can usually solve the majority of the ipod anomilies but this one has me flummoxed.
Has the film encoding type changed in the newest itunes update? - Has this happened to anybody else and is it a hardware, software, or operating system problem.

Having uninstalled the current version 11.1.3.8 and loaded and older version of iTunes 10.7.0.21 I can now categorically confirm that the newest update seems to be causing the problem as the films and TV Programmes are syncing perfectly on this older version.
If you are going to do this please dont forget to remove the  ' iTunes Library.itl' file as this stops the older versions from running as I've just found out

  • HD-DVD created with DVDSP will not use more than one subtitle track

I have made an HD-DVD with DVD Studio Pro 4.1.2, and added 4 subtitle tracks. When I play the dvd on a Toshiba A1, Apples DVD player and in the emulator I can change the subtitle track in the way that I can see the country code is changing, but no matter what it will only show me the subtitles from the first subtitle track. If I try to change the subtitle track using the remote, I can only turn the first subtitle track on and of, not switch between the different subtitle tracks. I'm a skilled dvd author, and have had several other authors look into the project finding no errors in my programming, so could this be a bug in DVD SP? Does it not allow more than one subtitle track?

Could be a bug in DVDSP. Also could be a bug in the players firmware. DVDSP never really made it has a fully functional HD DVD authoring tool.
