Master page based on master

Hi everyone,
I have a master page that contains just the footer information for a publication I'm working on. I then have a second master that's based on the first master. On this second master I've created a large colored graphic rectangle that fills the entire page. Since it's covering the entire page, I can no longer see the footer beneath (ie. the one that's on the first master page). The only way to have the footer appear above the rectangle is to override the footer and then bring it to front. This though, defeats the purpose of having the footer on a separate master. Since there will be a lot of other secondary masters based on the first master with the footer, I wanted to keep the footer information intact so that I could revise just one footer and have all the other masters based on it, update automatically.
I wondered if anyone knows of a workaround for this problem?
Really appreciate any help.

This is what layers are for. Open the Layers panel and make at least one more layer. Put the graphic on the lower layer and the footer on the upper layer.

  • Change Master Page based on Text Content

    Hello,
    I have found a few examples relating to changing Master pages based on Style.
    However, I would like to change all Pages that flag "True" with the query of the "2-1134" to to "Master-C" for example.
    I have 12 master Pages with different strings that I don't mind editing the script to make work.
    The document is close to 1,000 pages.
    I am having trouble merging so many different scripts into something that will work.
    Platform: Indesign CS4 6.0.5 - OS X (Intel)
    Thank you so much for your input, help and guidence.

  • Hiding a master page based on condition

    Hi All,
    I have created a form which has data on odd pages and some terms and condition on the back pages(even) pages. I am using Adobe Livecycle Designer ES version 8.1.2
    For this I created 4 Master pages.
    FirstPage - Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Odd (front) pages
                                       Placement -> First Page (in Page set)
    Front Page - Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Odd (front) pages
                                       Placement -> Rest of pages
    BackPage - Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Even (Back) pages
                                       Placement -> Rest of pages
    Dummy - Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Blank page
    I dragged the content area of back page on the dummy page.
    This set up works fine for printing.
    I have additional requirement of archiving, emailing and faxing. While sending a email or fax or archiving, the data should be continuous, the 'BackPage' master page should be removed otherwise they show in alternate pages as blank pages even if i set the presence property to 'visible(print only)' .
    Are there any settings which can be done to remove the master pages that are not needed based on a codition. Or can we achieve it through scripting.
    Regards
    Neha

    Hi Otto,
    I will try explaining the scenario...
    The form has to support back side printing and will be archived, sent by mail and by fax.
    The main content of the form will be on the front pages only and on the back side of the first page, the terms and conditions are printed.
    the rest of the back pages remain blank.
    Following the solution in the link below:
    ADOBE: How to print a table only on uneven pages and a text on the back?
    MasterPage -> Object pallete -> Page set -> Printing -> Print on both sides.(choosing this does not allow to set the occurance)
    I created 4 master pages.
    FirstPage -      Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Odd (front) pages
              Placement -> First Page (in Page set)
              Content area -> C1
    Front Page -      Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Odd (front) pages
              Placement -> Rest of pages
              Content area -> C2
    BackPage -      Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Even (Back) pages
              Placement -> Rest of pages
    Dummy -      Pagination -> Odd/Even - > Blank page
              Content area -> C3 (Dragged the content area of BackPage to the dummy page)
    I only have one Body page for now for the content and have put the terms and condition on the 'BackPage' master page itself as a text.
    (If I create a Body Page for the terms and condition (so that I can set its visiblity property) and I try to assign the content area of 'BackPage' (now on dummyPage) the designer shuts down with an error.)
    This works fine for the print set up.
    Now when I save the form, after each front page a blank page is inserted.
    I would like to remove this blank page.
    Is there any other way to have content on front pages only and print certain text only at the back.
    Please help.

  • How do I create an underlying master page for my master pages (without messing them up)?

    I created a Muse site long ago, and wanted to fix my SEO easily overall by better analytics among other things.
    Perhaps I am doing this the wrong way but I was thinking I could create a master page that I could just drop the html I needed into, and thus not fuss too much with my other pages. The problem is I already have master pages that my site is based on (before you could do this), and it would be much easier to have those master pages stem from one source (a Master master page?).
    Everytime I try to do this it changes my current master and final pages. Anyway I can create and invisible master so this doesn't happen?
    What should I do instead?
    THANK YOU.
    William

    Thanks,
    Your intructions were my plan untill I realized that in doing so, it changed the backgrounds etc of my current masterpages. I realize that this is a lack of planning due to my very rusty design principles, and something I wouldn't have done in my day job if the features had been in place. (so thank you for the new features!)
    While I realize I could probably fix this by recreating the site with a uniform underlying Primary Master Page feeding into my Secondary Master Pages, I was trying to create a master page that in effect wouldn't change a thing in the other subservient masterpages (thus allowing me freedom to create groups of pages with common analytics or any other types of code).
    Simply when I take your suggestion, things change... can I do this without making things change?
    Not sure if this makes sense. I am trying to avoid coding or a overhaul b/c of time constraints.

  • How do I 'assign a higher layer to the object on the master' (page numbers on master) I understand the layer needs to be at the top to show above placed images on pages but how do I do this?

    I've added the page numbers to my master pages. They are displaying on the pages but I have images on the individual pages that are covering the numbers. I understand I need to assign a higher layer to the object but I don't understand how to do that. Please help me? Please explain a simply clearly as possible, I've read other answers but still don't understand. Wish it was as simple as select object, right click, edit layer!
    Many thanks!

    Layers panel;
    Create new layer
    Switch to Master page
    Make sure new layer is on top in the Layers panel, if not drag the layer on top in the Layers panel.
    Select (click once on) that top layer (pen symbol appears behind that layer in the Layer panel)
    Now draw your page numbers etc on the Mastet page
    From now on, select (click once on) any Layer in the Layers panel that is below the layer you used on your Master page items and create new objects in your document pages.
    If you accidently created objects on a 'wrong' layer:
    Select those objects
    You will see a square behind the layers name in the Layers panel
    Click and hold the mouse on that square and drag it behind the name of the layer you want to move the objects to.

  • Hierarchical Master Pages - modifying a master page which inherits another

    Hi,
    I am not able to delete items on a new master page (after applying a previous master page) unless I go to that previous master page and delete the items there. I've heard there is the ability to override attributes from hierarchical master page sets. Could I be missing a step?

    It's the normal behavior of hierarchical master pages. Check this out:

  • Everytime I copy pages from one ID CS3 doc to another, it re-applies the master page objects!!

    Please Help,
    This is a topic I would really like to get to the bottom of.
    We have InDesign CS3 templates for creating our reports.
    These templates contain around 10 different master pages with grey placeholder image boxes and text boxes with dummy text.
    When we copy pages from one ID document to another, all the master page objects that were originally assigned to the pages are re-applied!!
    Resulting in lots of grey dummy boxes and text boxes re-appearing on top of the page items!!
    It's so annoying because we always customise the pages once we've pulled down master pages to work on, so when we copy pages across to other documents we have to apply the blank master to be able to kick out all the master objects easily.  Then we need to add the page numbers and footers back onto the blank master page.
    My question is, is there a way to switch this off, so when I move or copy pages from one document to another, nothing happens relating to master page objects, the pages simply just copy across as they are?
    Please help!  If not I may have to ask an external developer to write a script to fix this, it drives 900 of us crazy!
    thanks in advance for any help.
    Or am I just being ridiculous and not actually realising you can switch this off, doh!
    G

    Just a bit of further clarification on this issue (very few people really understand what's going on with master pages and overridden master page items):
    When you override a master page item, the object is moved to a local page, but a connection is maintained with the original master page item. This a) allows for the override to be removed (and return the object to its original state). This also, b) allows for changes made to the original master page item (other than the changes made to the local item from the point that it was overridden) to effect the local item as well.
    When the connection to the master page item cannot be maintained, the local item gets disconnected totally from the master page, and becomes a regular, run-of-the-mill page item.
    In light of this, there's three ways you can end up with duplicate master items:
    Reapplying a master page (or applying a new one). When you reapply a master, all overridden master page items get detached from the master, and the original mster page item appears again in its original state. Most of the time this produces unwanted duplication of objects. To fix up your page, you have two options: a) Delete the master page item, and b) copying the contents of the original to the new master page item. The disadvantage of "a" is that you end up with an item which is totally detached from the master, and changing the item on the master will have no effect on the local item. The disadavantage of "b" is that it's a lot of work...
    Moving a page to a different document. When you move a page to a different document which has the same master as the one originally applied, the master in the new doc is applied, and the effects are identical to reapplying a master page (i.e. overridden objects are detached). If the applied master (i.e. a master with the same name) does not exist in the new doc, the master is transferred over to the new doc along with the page, and the connections to the master page are preserved (well, re-created actually...). The workarounds in case #1 apply here as well.
    When page sides change in a document, the objects on the facing page appears.
    What happens here is a bit confusing, but here's an approximate explanation:
    When you apply a master to a page or spread in InDesign, what you are actually doing is applying an entire spread to an individual page. You can thing of a master spread as an overlay (or more precisely: underlay) on the page with a window cut out to the exact page dimensions.
    When the page side changes that "window cut-out" shifts to show the master spread items which correspond to the position within the spread of your current page (i.e. recto or verso). All objects which exist outside the window shift out of view (but still exist!).
    When an object is overridden, the position of the object is defined by its location on the local page, NOT its position on the master spread. When the page then changes sides, the object remains where it was on the page (even though the object it's connected to on the master spread moves out of the window of view). A corresponding object on the facing page of the master (if it exists) will then show in addition to the overridden one.
    Now remember: contrary to the first two cases, both objects are based on master ones: one visible one and one invisible one.
    Dealing with this third case requires much more care than the first two.
    The obvious way to deal with this would be similar to the first two, but if you remove the local object and transfer the content to the new maste object, the invisible master object on the non-visible page was actually removed, so when the page sides change again, the object will now be connected to the now-invisible master page item, and the correct master page item will be gone!
    The "correct" way to deal with this would be to transfer the content to the new master page item and remove overrides (not delete!) on the local item (which will make it disappear, because it moves back to the invisible page). Of course, when page sides change again, it becomes necessary to repeat the entire process.
    If the local object gets deleted, then your master spread is missing objects with no visible indicator of the fact. This can lead to confusion when the document might be edited at some later point in time.
    I believe that this complicated and un-intuitive behavior of master pages is part of the reason people tend to avoid using master page items. Documents tend to get messed up in really odd ways... It's a real shame, because extensive use of master page items has a lot of potential for streamlining workflows and saving an awful lot of time. This behavior really puts a damper on really using master pages as templates.
    Getting master page items to work the way they "should" was a big part of what I was trying to accomplish with AutoFlow Pro... When the master page items are defined as such (i.e. given a unique name), AutoFlow Pro solves all three of the above issues by keeping overridden master page items connected to the master page items on the currently applied master (and when a new master is applied as well!).
    (When I have a bit of spare time, I think I'll write this up on my blog with some visuals to make this easier to grasp...)

  • How to change the master page and theme dynamically in sharepoint2013 anonymous site

    Srinivas

    Hi Srinivas,
    According to your description, my understanding is that you want to change the master page and theme dynamically based on the anonymous users or authenticated users.
    Per my knowledge, there is not an OOB way to change the master page and theme dynamically.
    SharePoint is based on Asp.net, as we know Asp.Net request processing is based on pipeline model, so we can delevlop a custom HttpModule to dynamic change the master page based on current logon user profile(using SP Object Model to get).
    Another solution could be to use the SecurityTrimmed control that injects the CSS depending on global user permissions, more information, please refer to
    it.

  • 2 master pages with table data flow

    Hi,
      My form got 2 master pages. Each master page will display atleast once in the output preview. First page displays table data which may or may not flow to the second page depending on the no.of records. But, the form will show both the master pages in pdf preview( even if the second master page is empty).
      Now, I have a field in the both the master pages which will show the total amount. Total amount field will have a value which should be displayed in the first page if the data doesn't flow to the second page. The total should display in the second page if data flows to the second page. Where can I write the condition and how will I know whether the form is flowing to the second page or not? I cannot write based on the pagecount because the output will always contain 2 pages.
    How will I know my table is flowing to the next page or not so that I will write my logic based on it.
    Thanks,
    kc

    Hello Dude,
    Try to find out the field of the table is in which page. If it is in page 2 so u can print the amount there.
    try this script
    for(var i = 0 ; i < xfa.host.numPages ; i++)  // loop uoto total number of pages
      var oFields = xfa.layout.pageContent(i, "field");
      totalfields   =  oFields.length;                    // gives the number of fields in a page
       flag=1;
      for (var nNodeCount = 0; nNodeCount < z; nNodeCount++)  // loop through the fields
             if (oFields.item(nNodeCount).name == "find your table field")   // Here find for that field if it works print maount in that page
    Good Luck

  • Change master page

    I'm using indesign CS3 with javascript.
    I have a document with 11 chapters, every chapter has the same Master-page.
    Every chapter has 1,2, ..pages, the master page for the content in the chapter is not the same as the chapter Master-page.
    Every content from a chapter has a different master page, than the content from an other chapter.
    this means that i have 12 master-pages
    example:
    Chapter 1:           master-page A
         content1:       master-pageB
    Chapter2:           master-page A
         content2:       master-page C
    Every title from the chapter and content will be placed into a running header with a specifiek paragraph style.
    At the moment i have a little javascript, this script checks on every page for the paragraph style from a chapter.
    and the "master-page A" will bee placed on the right page.
    how can i extend my script for  the content master-pages?
    Is it possible that i can retrieve the text from the running header from the chapters?
    greetz,
    kim

    You can update the master page programmatically based on the variables you have
    SPSite site new SPSite("http://Foo");
    SPWeb web=site.OpenWeb();
    rootWeb.CustomMasterUrl = rootWeb.ServerRelativeUrl + "/_catalogs/masterpage/blueband.master";
    rootWeb.update();

  • No "presence" Attribute for Master Pages or Content Areas?

    Is it true that there isn't a .presence attribute for master pages and content areas?  I have a form with multiple master pages, and based on certain criteria, I'd like to not display the master page.
    This master page has 1 content areas.  One is a header area.  The rest of the page is content area 2.  It is blank.  I have a conditional breakpoint that sends line items from a table to content area 2 if I have more than 7 line items.
    If I have 7 or fewer line items, I'd like to hide this master page, but LiveCycle doesn't seem to think you should ever hide an entire master page.  If I could hide the top content area, then at least the page would print blank.
    I can't wrap content areas in subforms.  If I could do that, then I could hide the subform.
    Thanks!!

    My problem is I have page 1 with fields in the header, then there are line items attached to a database table.  There could be 1 line item or 200.  I can print up to 7 line items on the first page and then a footer must appear on just page 1.
    If there are more than 7 line items, I continue to another page.  I have to have a bunch of header fields at the top of this continuation page.  The line items continue under this.  If another continuation page is needed, then the header info appears at the top and then the line items continue.  This goes on until all line items are displayed.
    I have to use a conditional breakpoint in this line item table so I can tell it to go to a content area under the header on the continuation page.  I can't have the line items continue at the top of a page because I need that header.
    I define the content area under the content area for the header on the continuation page.  I have only been able to define content areas on master pages.
    I have more than 1 master page.  Page 1 and the final page are on 1 master page and they must always print.  The line item continuation page is another master page with 2 content areas (header and line item continuation).
    If I have 7 or fewer line items, the continuation page is not needed.  I need to be able to hide or display this page dynamically based on the number of line items from the database.
    I can show some examples when I get back to work.
    Thanks!

    Is it possible to make master pages with several  title in one file? & Can I define page range from which page to which should be specific title?

    While the number of master pages is not unlimited, you can have quite a few in any file. I've never seen the limit documented, but it's in the hundreds, or more likely thousands. There is, I believe, a page limit of 9999 pages per document, but I don't know if that includes the masters or if they are counted separately.
    You can choose a page range in the Pages panel, then assign a master to them manually, and I beleive there are some scripts floating around that can assign a master page based on the appearance of a paragraph style (for chapter start pages, for example).
