Master Password Lost

The computer we use where I work has a mystery master password. I think it may have been changed with a typo or something. Anyways, we can't install programs or change preferences now. Any help?

Hi Again Andrew!
What OS is the Mac running?
I would suggest obtaining a Full Retail Version of the install disks, for whichever OS.
Running a Mac without them, is like having a car with the hood welded shut.
The disks can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, etc.
Be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Jaguar and Panther are only on CDs, not DVDs.
More info here Tip: Using OS X Install CDs/DVDs On Multiple Macs.
That article explains why your disks don't work.

    Hello,

I am a computer professional, an do some security work for Microsoft..that is my specialty--security. Not, passwords, obviously, lol.
I found this program, but it's way over my head>> Firemaster.
So, ANY help, would be super appreciated!

Tony, sorry to double reply..but when you, or if you answer my upper post, if I use your idea it will erase the MASTER password so I can "start over"?
But my 2nd question is: how in the world do you use firemaster?? I mean the guy gives a video but in super small neon green letters...mine should be easy only 8 digits, and again 2 upper case letters..
thanks SO much... I feel so dumb, to work for Microsoft and have this happen..but as I said I work ONLY in security areas.

When you hear the startup tone, press and hold down the C key until you see the spinning gear.
When the Language Chooser appears, select your language and click Continue.

  • Lost master password need to reset

Hello, My master password works on main computor, it will not work on my laptop, I found the link to reset the main computor but it doesn't work on my laptop, Is there a way to reset the master password , Then I'll go back to pen and paper. Thank you for whatever help you can provide, I'm sure someware their is a link to reset it.

You can delete the key3.db file and logins.json file and a possible signons.sqlite file or move them to another folder to make it possible to undo the action.
You need to set a new Master Password after renaming or deleting key3.db and all currently saved passwords are lost.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

  • Lost master password - HELP

    Hi guys,
I lost my master-password. Well, not really, because I set it to 'Chait' but now it does not work. I have tried the DVDs that came with my computer and was unable to find an option to change the master password. I would really appreciate it if you can tell me an easy way to fix this.
    Thanks in advance all's

    Hi.
A year ago I was given an older G4 tower from work, circa 1999-2000, and the person who set up the master password was not working here anymore. I was planning to wipe the info eventually, but I wanted to remove some important files, etc. I went to the accounts section and added myself as an administrator, logged out the old administrator, logged in under my name, then removed the old administrator. Now I was the only user and was able to use the computer without having to buy system software. It saved me hours of reformating and it ran fine until a few years ago when I put a fresh OS X on it with more memory.
    Hope this helped.
Again, I am not sure if this would work on the newer X's like Tiger. On the older it did the trick.

  • I have lost my MAC OS 10.6.8 Keychain password AND my Master password...what can I do?

I have misplaced my MAC OS 10.6.8 Keychain passwords along with my Master password, can anyone help me resolve this?

That depends on what you consider a "resolution"... What are you trying to do, and why? How did this come to your attention?
Usually, your keychain password is the same as your account password. Note that if your account password is blank (contains zero characters), Keychain Access will refuse to allow you to unlock it, but generally applying a "proper" password to your account will resolve this (edit: depending on how you do it. At this stage I don't recommend any actions until you've clarified the situation).

  • Lost my masterpassword, I have uninstalled and installed Firefox, but when I reinstall it remembers my settings (including master password), what can I do?

I have tried installing and reinstalling the browser but it does not work.
What do I need to do in order to install as new and so I can set up my new master password or recoup my old one?

hello lmoncada, for instructions please refer to [[Reset your Master Password if you've forgotten it]]

  • Lost all my saved passwords and the master password. Why and how?

    1. I have a blog that has Zazzle marketing "flash panels." About 4 months ago, I stopped being able to see them, even though others on Zazzle could see them. Yesterday I disabled AdBlock Plus and Adblock Helper so that I could see the flash panels. I could see them. Then I turned the addons back on. I think that the master password was still working, because I had to restart the browser and then Microsoft insisted on my restarting, so there must have been updates to install. They didn't immediately work, as I saw some context ads. I got a message from AdBlock that it wasn't turned on for that page, and I followed directions and got it back on. 2. Another thing that I did yesterday, that I don't generally do, was to clear all the cookies. I have Do Not Track, so I usually don't bother with clearing the cookies. I closed the browser. 3. Yesterday I tried some new addons that I don't recall the names of now. I wound up removing them all, so that I could go back to my previous well-running browser activity. 4. I went through my programs and removed all that I did not recognize, about 6 of them.

hello linda, according to norton the toolbar is already compatible with all firefox versions up to the currently released version. please run the norton liveupdate utility repeatedly & until all components are up-to-date. in addition make sure that the toolbar is enabled under ''firefox > addons > extension'' afterwards.

    See:
    * https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Forgot+my+master+password
If you reset the master password then you lose all stored passwords.
You can try to use the Time Machine to restore both key3.db and signons.sqlite to versions when you didn't had the master password.
You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Lost my Norton master password box from FF3.6

When using Firefox 3.6 I had access to a Norton Security master password that remembered all of my password from all of my important sites. I would access that in the toolbar of Firefox. With the new Firefox that is missing, is it still there or did I lose my password manager?

Symantec need to update their Firefox add-ons so that they are compatible with Firefox 4. They have indicated that for Norton 360 they plan to release an update to Norton 360 to support Firefox 4 in early May - http://us.norton.com/support/kb/web_view.jsp?wv_type=public_web&docurl=20100720113635EN&ln=en_US
I do not know about the time scale for updates for other Norton products. Pending the update by Symantec, if you want to use the Norton add-ons you will need to downgrade to Firefox 3.6.
To downgrade to Firefox 3.6 first uninstall Firefox 4, but do not select the option to "Remove my Firefox personal data". If you select that option it will delete your bookmarks, passwords and other user data.
You can then install the latest version of Firefox 3.6 available from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html - it will automatically use your current bookmarks, passwords etc.
To avoid possible problems with downgrading, I recommend going to your profile folder and deleting the following files if they exist - extensions.cache, extensions.rdf, extensions.ini, extensions.sqlite and localstore.rdf. Deleting these files will force Firefox to rebuild the list of installed extensions, checking their compatibility, and reset toolbar customizations.
For details of how to find your profile folder see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Profiles

  • I lost my master password

    I Can't Enter anymore

    Renee,
Here is how you can reset the master password:
    Copy and paste the following:
    <code>
    chrome://pippki/content/resetpassword.xul
    </code>
Put that into your location (url) bar, and press the Enter key. Press the Reset button in the content that appears. Your Master Password will now be reset (to not having a Master Password).
This will cause the loss of all your saved passwords.

  • Firefox lost master password

    Ubuntu 12.04 64 bit
    Linux 3.2.0-67-generic
    GNOME 3.4.2
    AMD Phenom II X4 920
    3.9 GiB ram
    1.6 TiB available disk space
    149 GiB swap
    Firefox 31.0 (Canonical 1.0)
Everything seems to be running normally, then I try to log in and firefox does not auto-fill the password. The password file is empty. I am unable to reset the master password. This is the second time this happened. The first time I tried everything, including a complete uninstall before an install. The only thing that worked was to use a spare hard drive install Ubuntu 12.04 AMD64.

Hmm.. there are a lot of ways to obtain a password, but they aren't always legal.
Firstly check if there is a forgot password feature on the website you try to get access to, if there is they often sent a reset link for your password to the email you registered with.
If there isn't such a link, but you did have to register with your email address try to contact the administrators or support team and ask them if there is a way to get access to your account. Email adresses nowadays aren't always trustworthy however since they can be spoofed, so it's possible they don't want to help you that way.
I recommend using another password manager like KeePass since it's a little more secure and, although there aren't as much viruses for linux as for Windows it's always a good idea to store your passwords someplace outside your browser, if you choose to store them somewhere at all.
If you re-used your password anywhere you might try these steps on the website(s) where you did.
Then there's always the option of brute-forcing your password/using a dictionary attack, but you shouldn't get to this, since this is illegal. What you might try to do however, is try SOME combinations that are similar to the passwords you've used before. If you used very complicated passwords and you trusted Firefox to store it, you are probably out of luck.
I recommend you use passphrases as your passwords, because they are pretty easy to remember as long as you use a website often enough. Also I recommend having a backup of your passwords on a password protected USB to make sure you won't lose your passwords again.

  • HELP!!! I lost master password!

HELP, I forgot my master password and even if there's a hint (and I know the answer) I've been trying all the possible combinations of upper/lower case that I can think of but it didn't work. Is there a way to recover/change it? Thanks a lot!!

A friend of mine said that while it is a pain in the toches, it could be resolved by disabling FileVault on every account, and then deleting a "FileVaultMaster.keychain" file, resetting the master password, and then enabling FileVault on each account again.
    That seems basically correct.
I found several reports that there are actually two files, "FileVaultMaster.keychain" and "FileVaultMaster.cer", both in HD>Library>Keychains (not username>Library>Keychains) associated with the master passsword. After first turning off FileVault everywhere, removing these two files should enable you to re-enter a new master password. See
    section 4 of http://www.macworld.com/article/58777/2007/07/aug07workingmac.html
    and
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5822772&#5822772
My concern is that resetting the Master Password would effect other apportionments of MacOS, is this the case or not?
I highly doubt it, but I can't give you a better answer than "probably not"!
I'd keep a backup of the two removed files, rather than deleting them altogether.
