Master Password up in smoke?

After reading a recent MacWorld article on making your Mac secure, I felt it might be a good idea to add a master password to the Keychain, and so followed instructions to do this, saved it, checked it, all seemed fine.
Last night I logged off the machine before putting it to sleep. Today I logged back in, and it immediately asked for the master password. I typed in the password, and it was rejected. I wrote it down, so I looked at it again just to be sure, typed it again, and it was rejected. After the 3rd time, I was tossed out for too many attempts. I've now tried it about 50 times with variations that I know really weren't what I typed. No soap.
How does one eliminate this bloody password that seemed like such a good idea?

Thanks, baltwo. I did dig around in the discussions, but more often than not the phrase "master password" turned up discussions of the File Vault and not the Keychain. In any case, my situation has resolved itself, thanks to another article in MacLife from a few months back, which reminded me (doh!) that there's this thing called Keychain First-Aid in the KeyChain menu...application of which fixed my keychain password problem. So it seems Apple planned for days like this.
I've another question--still keychain oriented: on my laptop, I find that email account passwords are not being stored in the keychain, even though I've repeatedly checked the "Remember this Password in my Keychain" box, with the result that I have to keep entering the password to receive or send mail for each account.

• How secure is master password?

Hi
I have very sensitive information on my iBook. I can choose
master password after screen saver/sleep or FileVault.
FileVault encrypts the info which I feel uncomfortable with
as it may make it difficult to backup.
Can the password be removed by a someone who takes the
computer? Is there any way around the master password.
If the hard drive has to be erased to clear the password
then I feel safe with password.
I go to coffee shops alot, I am careful so far but someday I
may slip.
thanks in advance

Hi, Mark.
While it is possible to remove the Master Password from a Mac on which user's Home folders are protected with FileVault, doing so does not permit one to then change the passwords on FileVault-protected accounts. One would still need to know the password for the user account.
It is important to choose good passwords. Tiger offers a password assistant that helps you choose good passwords.
If you don't want to use FileVault, using Encrypted Disk Images is the best and easiest route to encrypting and password-protecting select data on a Mac. There are two AppleCare Knowledge Base documents you should read in relation to encrypted disk images:
- "Mac OS X: About Encrypted Disk Images."
- "Mac OS X: How to create a password-protected (encrypted) disk image."
- "Disk Utility 10.5 Help: Creating a disk image."
You can even burn an encrypted disk image to CD or DVD.
The most important thing to remember about encrypted disk images is to never lose the password. If you lose it, you will never be able to open it. If you rely on the password being saved in your Keychain, and later format your drive, you lose the password saved in your keychain, so write it down and save it in a secure place, just in case. For added security, do not add the password of an encrypted disk image to your Keychain when this option is offered.
Note that some of the information above is from the "Security" chapter of my book, Troubleshooting Mac® OS X.
Good luck!

• How do i reset my master password on MacBook Pro previously owned by someone else?

I purchased from someone else in 2011 and needed to reset master password. It was done, but now I am having problems resetting it. It does not recognize the reset password. I am trying to add new software and can't do so without password. Can someone please help me? I entered to change in terminal window, but when it comes to adding new password, computer won't allow to add new passcode in blank.

Check out KB Articles http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274 Changing or resetting an account password and http://support.apple.com/kb/PH11390 OS X Mountain Lion: Reset a login password if you are using ML. You never stated which OS you are currently using.

• Master Password Feature: After sometime (10-15 min.) the drop down list for the field on any site does not show; opening new window (not refresh or new tab) drop down appears.?

I manage a ton of accounts for different customers suing the same login pages (GoDaddy, WordPress, etc.) I use the Master Password Feature to help keep track of the many variants in logins and passwords.
After some unknown period of time, even closing the page tab so a new page session is started at the remote server, Firefox does not provide me with the usual drop-down selection list of the previously used login names. However, if I open a new FF window (file/new window) from the menu bar, the drop down becomes available.
How can I refresh the original window session in FF or change the timeout length?

Well, you said LOV...that might mean you are using JDev 11g. Are you? If so what technology stack are you using?
Assuming you are using JSF (?) you might be "backing" your list component in the application scope...but that is not likely.
If you are using ADF/BC on your business component level, you can clear your view object from which you are querying the possible values of this list...unless your you have made a method to compile this list...in which case you know what you are doing...so that is probably not the case.
Essentially you want to requery the VO upon which your LOV is based...unless you are using JPA or something...and then I know "requery" is not the right word...is it?

• Please help me get my laptop back someone has cracked the master password and is running multiple operating systems which I have no access to

Okay so I am not a computer expert by any means and have no clue how to fix my system. My father worked for intel for over 20 years as an engineer I asked him to restore my laptop to its original factory state and instead he cracked the master password
installed multiple operating systems and made himself the administrator or domain controller. Many features and options I do not have access to so reading the trouble shooting and going through the steps always leads me to a dead end. The laptop is TOSHIBA
SATELLITE L875D-S7332 a6 VISION AMD WINDOWS 8. As far as I can see my profile is actual running a version of windows 7. I do see reference to a windows 8RT windows 2003 windows vista wow64 and 32 I don't know what all that means I would just like to know how
wipe everything and get back to the factory condition I bought it in. If anyone can help it would be much appreciated

Do you have Win 7 installation disk? If yes, then go ahead and format the laptop if you don't need any data. If you need the data it it, then copy the same to USB disk and format it. Removing OS and deleting these things will anyhow keep some remains on
HDD. TO get the speed and performance back, you might need a fresh installation.

You can reset the master password and go from there:
For Snow Leopard and earlier:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1274?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
For Lion and later:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-4101
On your phone, if you connect it to the computer with a USB cable, it should show up as an external drive in Finder. From there you should be able to navigate to your pictures folder and copy your stuff.

• When I go to a website requiring login, and am logged in automatically, I still get prompted by Software Security Defice for master password. New w/Firefox 24.

If I go to a website that requires a login & password, and I have it set up to automatically log me in, I get automatically logged in (it remembers by userid & password for that site), but the prompt from the Software Security Device for my master password appears as well. I can cancel the prompt and it goes away, but it shouldn't show up because I'm already logged in. This problem started happening after I downloaded Firefox 24 yesterday.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode|Safe Mode]] to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
*Do NOT click the Reset button on the Safe Mode start window.

Note that Firefox Sync also requires you to enter the Master Password.

So I guess I need to run the disk that came with computer to change the master password but all I get when I start computer is logg in screen..how do i run disk on start up before logg in screen?
Id appreciate any help, thanx in advance.

• Is there a way to use a Master Password only to view Saved Passwords, without having to type it in every session?

If anyone ever uses my computer, they can easily see my Saved Passwords. I want to be able to secure them. The only way to do that is by setting a Master Password, which is great, but I don't really want to have to type it in every time I open up my web browser.
I couldn't seem to find this anywhere in any searches. Is there an Add-on or tweak that can set a Master Password only to protect my Saved Passwords?

Thanks, Matt. In my case, the monitor definitely shuts off when I unplug the power from my laptop in clamshell mode. If the lid is open, however, the monitor continues to function even without the power adapter plugged into my laptop. Ideally, I'd like to have the lid closed on my laptop and be able to use the external monitor without having the power plugged into my laptop. That's what doesn't seem to work - if your does, please let me know if you have any pointers.
Thanks again!

• Don't know my Master Password.

When I upgraded my white 2008 MacBook to OS 10.6.8, the new OS forced me to chose a new administrator password; apparently the old one wasn't strong enough. Today I installed software updates that required restarting the computer, and I couldn't remember my new admin password. I tried to change it to a new one that I could remember, but to do that I had to provide a "Master Password". After much trial and error, I finally remembered my adminstrator password and got into my account. I don't remember creating a master password, and if I did, I didn't write it down anyplace that I can find it. Silly me, I keep some passwords in a file on the computer, but the master password isn't one of them. What is the master password; where is it; and how can I recover it in case I need it again? I've read several threads relating to this issue, but they all seem to refer to something called File Vault. I can't find File Vault on my computer, so this master password apparently doesn't have anything to do with that. If I can't remember either the administrator password or the master password, has my MacBook just become an expensive paperweight?

I haven't used my IMac in a long time and went to boot it up, and I find I don't remember the correct username and password (I use several computers..I try to keep the passwords similar, with a number for the chronological order in which I started using them) I've tried all the others I use for passwords. The 'hint" keeps coming up for the password I am pretty sure is the correct one, but, still cannot get in. I also don't remember whether I changed my surname on the computer...it was changed legally a little while ago, but some of my older devices still have my birth-name in there)

• I tried to set up a new account but it has a master password and do not recall setting one how do I change that it will not let me turn it off without knowing the password I do not recall ever setting on. How do I clear the Master Password?

I was trying to set up my mobile phone with Android with the Firefox App and my Netbook which I use the Firefox on and sync them but it came up that I have a Master Password but I do not recall setting one up and I have record of all my passwords that I keep in a secure place and I had trouble with a hacker who had accessed several of my accounts and I am now concerned that they may have also access this and we did not catch this one as we did the other accounts and stopped them from getting access. But that is not my concern any longer as that has been remedied the problem is how do I get the password unlocked or changed since I have no idea what it is? I tried to turn it off but it will not allow me to do that either without knowing it. Please advise as to what can be done so I can use this App on my Droid. Thanks. Deborah

• I use master password & if I change passwords on a site, it doesn't ask to "change" Also doesn't ask to "remember" with new usernames/passwords. Does anyone know how to fix this or add usernames & passwords to saved password page on Firefox.

Firefox (I think version 5, maybe 4) does not ask to "remember" passwords anymore nor does it ask to "change" a password when I've done that. It didn't ask when I changed my Facebook password & I have to log in each time so I removed my username & password for FB on Firefox's "saved password" page. When I've don't that before, it asks to "remember" but doesn't anymore. I use a master password.

Make sure that you do not run Firefox in permanent Private Browsing mode.

To see all History and Cookie settings, choose:
*Tools > Options > Privacy, choose the setting Firefox will: Use custom settings for history
*Deselect: [ ] "Always use private browsing mode"
The website may be using autocomplete=off to prevent Firefox from saving the name and password.
You can remove autocomplete=off with a bookmarklet to make Firefox save the name and password.

• How do I actually use a master password?

My home folder is protected with file vault and so I have a master password set. If ever I should forget my user password how would I use the master password to get in to my Mac?
thx

If you would ever forget your password, then you
would need to use the Mac OS X Install Discs to reset your password.
The above suggestion is not correct for an account that's protected with FileVault. Even if it does allow you to reset the password on the account it does not reset the password on the encrypted home folder.
Instead read this Apple Support article.
Basically you "attempt" to logon to the account using incorrect passwords. After three incorrect attempts you'll be prompted for the Master Password (or if the account has a password hint set you'll see the password hint - enter another incorrect password to get the Master Password prompt).
At this point you can enter the Master Password and you'll be allowed to set a new password for the account. This will also set the new password on the encrypted home folder, mount it and log you in to the account.
You can also mount a FileVault encrypted home folder from the command line with the Master Password using hdiutil. One reason you might want to do this is if you had multiple accounts on a machine and you were logged in to one account but needed to recover or access files in an encrypted home folder of another account.
