Mastering a DVD-9 to two DVD-Rs

Hi everyone,
I've seen folks on this forum speak of mastering Layer 0 to one DVD-R, and Layer 1 to another DVD-R, as a way of delivering a DVD-9 project to a duplicator in lieu of a DLT. However, the DVDSP4 manual evinces no technical description of how to do this. When formatting through DVDSP4, it doesn't seem to be an option. Can someone point me in the right direction, in a timely fashion if possible (I just got the ubiquitous "We can't load your DLT masters" message from my client's duplicator this morning -- yikes!).
Thanks in advance for your help --
Jerome

I believe that the data would survive on an ISO 9660 DVD, if you can make such a thing. Otherwise Mac/PC format should work. You could talk to the replicator, and maybe for peace of mind make the two folders into zip archives, and put those on the DVD-R.
The one time I had to do this was a similar situation, the replicator complained about the DLT. We had done DLT because the disc used CSS encoding, not because it was double layer. I'm not sure about those other settings you talked about, but I know that CSS survives the trip via a layer0 folder.
As I've only had to do this one one shipped disc, it may be worth waiting hear other opinions here too.

  • How to make project across two DVDs with one DVD menu

    Hi!
I’m working on a large project (3 hours of video with about 10 chapters, over 50 pictures in a playlist, and special feature chapter) and wondering is it possible to make an project across 2 or more DVDs, but to have menu only on first one? I’d like to make an project that comes with menu only on first DVD and when you click on e.g. “special features” button, then you get the message “please insert DVD 2″
Is it possible and how to make something like that?
    Thank you!

I would have EACH DVD begin with a menu. Somebody will insert DVD 2 first no matter how you label things.
Yes, you are right! People just don't want to read, but I'm making an animated menu in AE and it'll take about 300MB (rendered in .mpg). That is what I want to avoid on other DVDs to save some space. You just gave me an idea so I'll make some small menu for other one or two DVDs with just a few informations about what DVD is inserted and what DVD you need to insert if you want to watch something else from that project. Thank you!
I just have to learn better Encore and its capabilities and limitations (if I have time )

  • Combing two DVD Studio Pro projects?

    Hi,
How do I combine two DVD Studio projects? I have two short projects, and each has some complicated track edits and subtitles etc that I really don't want to re-do by hand. Isn't there some way to copy and paste between projects or otherwise combine these two projects?
    Thanks
    Bob

    Bob
I do this sort of thing regularly, its very easy to do
you cant copy and paste assets between projects as only one project is active at any one time.
import all the assets used in both existing projects into the new project ie video audio and graphics
to reuse the menus from the existing projects in the new project, first export these from the existing projects by:
export > item description, and save the file
in the new project import these by:
file > import > item description and select the saved file, do this for as many saved description files as you need
you now have all the exising material combined into one combined project

  • *Two* DVD players set to different regions: possible?

I would like to watch a mix of DVDs from Region 1 and Region 2 on my PowerBook G4. Obviously, there is a limit to five region changes.
Would it be possible to use two DVD drives, i.e., my internal SuperDrive, and an external DVD drive, one permanently set to Region 1 and the other permanently set to Region 2, and insert the DVD I want to watch in the appropriate drive depending on the DVD region?
In other words, where does the region control reside? Is it in the drive only, or also in the OS and/or in the DVD Player application?
    Thanks

We never bounce the concurrent manager process when we update the concurrent program define. There has never been a need to do so. But, regardless, it bounces twice a week anyway and it has had no effect.
I do not think this is possible without using a 3rd party/custom solution (ex. Optio).
The requirement is pretty simple really: We have a report that MUST ABSOLUTLEY ALWAYS_ print only to a single, particular printer. And, if it is in a request set that contains other reports and it is defined to print to a different printer they all should go to the "correct" printers.
If anyone has a method to do this please post!

  • Spliting DVD in to two chapters

    Hi all
I have just done my first iDVD prodjet, which was my daughters prom. I wanted to make a DVD of about 107 digital photos. All went well in doing the design and burning the DVD. Problems started when we noticed an error in some spellings. I changed the error and re-burnt the DVD - DVD+RW, 4.7GB DVD - no problem at that point, either playing via a TV, Windows Laptop or my iMac. Started to go all wrong when I had to re-burn the DVD again, due to another spelling error. This time when we went to view it, it had split the images in to 2 chapters. The first has 99 images in it and the second chapter has the other 8 images.
What has gone wrong. The only change I have made in the settings is that the audio fades out at the end of the DVD.
    Any help will do...........

    Hi Sue
I tryed that.....but its still the same. What I should have said in my first post is that I have two Titles. Title One is split into 99 Chapters and Title Two is split into 6 Chapters.
When played via a DVD player & TV it gets to Title 1/ Chapter 99 then hickup's into Title 2 / Chapter 1. It's the same when played on my iMac. When played via Windows Media Player v10 it halts at Title 1/ Chapter 99
So is it something I have to put up with or am I missing something......

  • How do I remove two DVDs from my MacBook's optical drive?

My 2yo daughter put two DVDs into my MacBook’s optical drive. Does anyone know how I can remove them? Everything I can find is for removing one DVD. Thanks.

  • Burning single file across two DVD-Rs

My aunt has given me her digital video recorder. She wants me to make a DVD out of the video of my cousin's graduation. The thing is, she recorded the entire ceremony and then some (+2hours long!!). I copied the video onto my HD. I tried to just use Toast 6 to burn it but, of course, I don't have enough disk space on the 4.7GB DVD-Rs. Is there any way to have this file split across two DVD-Rs like when VHS movies sometimes needed two tapes for a single movie? I have iMovie HD and iDVD with some experience in both. I also am getting familiar with Final Cut Pro HD but it's a lot more complex than I would want to mess with right now. Thanks for any help you guys can provide!!

I don't remember if Toast 6 has the option (like the current version) of compressing video to fit on a single DVD. If not, you have a choice of doing a workaround to compress onto a single DVD, or splitting the file. To assess the options, it would be helpful to know more about the existing grad video -- is it on a miniDV camcorder? recorded on a hard drive? do you know the video format? how much longer than 2hrs is the video?

  • Two DVD drives showing in "My Computer" - Qosmio G20

    Hi,
I have a G20 and for some reason Ive got two DVD drives showing in My Computer.
The first one is called `DVD-RAM Drive` and is known as the D: drive. If I put a DVD or CD in the drive, then it shows up on this icon.
But there is also a second one called `DVD Drive` and it is known as the E: Drive. It doesnt show up any discs that i put in the machine. If i double click on it, it just gives the usual error saying `please insert a disc in the drive`.
Can anyone explain the difference here and why I have this second drive?
    Thanks!

    Hi
On this way it is not easy to say what happen there. As far as I know some applications create a virtual drives and I dont know what for applications are preinstalled on your machine.
Other way you can go into drive properties (right mouse button) and click on Hardware tab. On this place you will be able to see the device type.

  • Dvd not playing on dvd player

Burning the dvd works and the dvd plays fine in the computer, but it doesn't work on my dvd player (or the other two that I tried it on...all relavtively new dvd players. I think my settings may have changed or something? any suggestions? I'm exporting my clip as a quicktime and just dropping it into idvd. thanks so much!!

I see this is your first post. You have a problem which keeps coming up and I'm not sure I have see a definitive solution.
First, DVD players re designed to accept commercial DVDs and DVD-Rs are a sort of extra so they don't read them with the same certainty.
Some suggest trying different brands, verbatim is a popular choice.
It is always worth burning a slower speed than the disc rating, this appears to help.
My favourite hint is to quit all other applications whilst burning the disc. Particularly internet connection if you run an application like Entourage which accesses the net at regular interval.
Show respect! you are asking the system to burn over 32,000,000,000 and only a small number of errors will spoil the disc.
    I hope this helps.

  • Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?

Copy-Protecting DVDs against piracy in DVD Studio Pro; or otherwise ?
I'm about to start encoding to MPEG2 a very important project that I've edited in Final Cut Pro.
It is vital that it cannot be copied by the client or I could lose a lot of money.
In the past this has never been a concern, but in this case it is very important.
What is the best way to prevent a client/people from copying your DVDs?
Is there anything I can do within DVD Studio Pro or is there anything the Replication house can do at the Glass-Mastering stage?
I'm sure this topic has been covered, but a quick search found nothing.
    Thanks guys.

Common problem but no easy answer. It's simply too easy to get around.
If you want to prevent finished master disks being copied in the same way commercial disks are then you will need to get them made at a duplication facility. Not cheap. You can't do it in DVD studio, it's to do with the disk burner.
On a feature film it is very important to prevent copies of work in progress. What a lot of cutting rooms do is make dvd's with the name of the person burnt in and a copy number. Often a large X with 30% opacity is put in the middle of frame.
This can't stop copies being made but at least you will know where they came from. It also seems to make the person who's name is burnt in take more care.
Sorry but thats the best I can offer.

  • Burned DVD plays on some DVD players and not others

    Hello all,
First, please forgive my ignorance because I do not work with video much and have no idea what I'm doing. Someone created a video that I need to burn so the DVD can play on any DVD player. The folder is titled "VIDEO_TS" and then the files within it have the following extensions: .BUP, .IFO, .VOB. with VIDEO and VTS as the prefixes. the largest file has a .VOB extension. The master disk is a DVD-R and I burned the video on a Verbatim DVD-R which played fine on my MAc, a PC and two DVD players. However, I tried it on two other DVD players and it could not be played. So now I'm trying to figure out how I can created a DVD that will be compatible with any DVD player or create an alternate version that can be played on the machines that currently can't play the DVD.
Does all of that make sense? I've been all over the internet and seen different suggestions for similar problems but I don't want to spend money or waste time trying different tactics that won't solve my problem.
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi
This is a question very familiar in iDVD forum. I use to answer like this.
    • Brand of DVD used matters - I only use Verbatim (more organic dye in these) - but there are other GOOD Brands
    • DVD-R - plays on more DVD-players than DVD+R as it plays on even older DVD-players (DVD+/-RW - don't even think of it)
    • BURN SPEED - is a major contributor to this problem - I never go faster than x4 - I use as standard x2
There are two kinds a blanc DVD can be burned as
    • DATA-DVD - Files from DeskTop just stored on a blank DVD - few DVD-players can play this (only very very new ones and they are rare - if I'm rightly informed)
    • Video-DVD - a DVD-authoring program is a MUST. iDVD, DVD-Studio Pro, Burn, Roxio Toast etc etc
I'm told that Compressor can do this - I never got it to deliver a Playable-DVD - BUT THIS IS DUE TO MY NEGLECT !
So when iDVD or Toast creates this very special structured DVD - You find the two (must be there) folders VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS (empty) - and if the DVD-player don't find this = it will not play.
Yours - very happy with iDVD and Toast (and DVD-Studio Pro - but this is hard to get right) - Bengt W

Hi Albos, This is a known problem. These superdrives die after a while. See the various threads on this site and the internet. I have the same problem with my Imac 20" 2.16 ghz. Just wants to burn and read cd's. Its has to do with the laser. For DVD an CD are two different laser and the one for DVD's has probably died in yours (as it did in mine). I bought an external LG burner and problem solved. (And a lot cheaper than replacing the superdrive)
    Hope this helps you.

  • DL DVD to single layer DVD

Is it possible to copy a DVD DL to two single layer DVDs (to install Leopard onto a non-DL optical drive)?

There are utilities that can compress video DVDs, but it won't matter in this case. Even if you did what you are trying to accomplish, the OS Installer doesn't 'know' that the data is split onto two disks, and therefore won't be able to complete the install.
