Mastering Mystery

Usually when mastering, you want to limit your audio to prevent it from going over zero. When I import commercial songs to compare my mix, I noticed that they are limited at -3.0. I decided to import the commercial songs into all the different templates that Logic had, and i got the same result, except for the stereo mastering template. That template actually registers the commercial songs at zero. I read "Mastering Audio" by Bob Katz, and he states that most DAW meters are inaccurate and can clip an audio file if mixed too high, therefor he states a fail safe setting on DAW's should be -3.0. Does this mean Logic has this built in fail safe setting? So when I'm mixing, should I make sure that my mix does not go over -3.0? So I guess I gotta bounce my mix to two tracks, and i have to export it to the Logic stereo mastering template, and my mix would jump from -3.0 to 0, right? I don't know. Have you noticed this? Please send me feedback.

It's not your DAW meters that are inaccurate, it's the converter you (and the people listening to your CD) use.
A signal mastered at 0dBFS will most of the time reach levels that are "higher than 0dBFS" when converted back to analog (meaning the analog signal produced by the D/A converters would clip your A/D converters). If your converters are design to handle those signals it will sound great (in your studio), but if they're not (on a consumer CD player), you will get distortion.
It's all in the math. If a converters has a lowpass filter set to cut everything above 20KHz, it will actually raise your signal up to +3dB.
That's why a lot of people recommend to mix and master at -3dB, but it doesn't seem that anyone is interested in "guaranteed distortion free" mixes at the expense of losing 3dB of gain.

  • How can I reduce the size of the MASTERS folder inside Photos?

I was trying to find out why my Photos app database is SO large.  I have 8 gig of jpg photos.
I chose to NOT copy them when I imported them into Photos.
Yet my Photos app database is 8g as well!  That's a lot of space to use when I didn't even copy the JPG into it.
So I went hunting to learn what was going on.
You can go to your Pictures Folder and find the Photos Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.
    Here is what I found:
The "Masters" folder is very small.  300MB.
The "Previews" folder is a similar size.
    "Thumbnails" are under 1G.
It's the "Resources" folder that is many gigs in size.
Very interesting.  So in a sense, it could be even worse!
That is, apparently the setting prevented the "Masters" folder from getting 8 gig of photos copied into it.
But even so, "Resources" ended up with 6.5G in it -- even though no files were copied!
    Wild.
Other photo management apps (e.g., Lightroom) have sort of a 10% overhead, not a 90% overhead -- i.e., close to the same size as the actual photos themselves.
I should probably start a fresh question, now that you have solved half the mystery:  Yes, the actual photos were not imported into Masters, but Resources gets really big!
So here is my question:  What the heck is going on with RESOURCES?  How can I make that folder smaller?  I mean, at this point, if I were to choose to import all my photos, it looks like that would double the size of my Photos installation.  Of course, I'm not going to do that.  Because, already, I don't have enough space for everything on my hard drive.  And Photos, even when not importing, takes up a lot of space.
I need to get this folder under control.  How can I?

    Cool article, but not relevant.
I did not import from iPhoto nor Aperture.
I have my photos as JPEG files in a folder on my hard drive.
Photos, the app, did not make any duplicates. Rather, it made a giant Resources folder, almost as big as my folder of Image files.
FInder Info confirms the size increase and lost capacity on my hard drive.
But I appreciate the link.  That could certainly give someone the same impression.

  • Iphoto glitch with retained masters

    Mavericks 10.9.4
    iphoto 9.5.1
I am currently having a mysteriously bulky iphoto even after deleting most my photos.
How can I delete the masters of iPhoto without losing my photos in the main iPhoto display library and all their masters and edits.
I take loads of photos and import them and then will keep only 4% of the ones that I import.  As a result I have a masters folder of over 60GB and actual photos that take up less that 5 or 10 GD.  Is it possible to delete the master folder without losing all the photos and without having to pain stakingly go through every folder and pick out from literally hundreds the ones that i kept and edited.  How do I reduce the size of the masters just down to the ones that I have kept and not every single photo and video that I imported in the history of my iPhoto experience.
Is there a way to just delete the masters that are no longer in the iPhoto library, while keeping the masters and edits of the ones that I clearly want to keep because they are the ones that I did keep.
There is nothing in iPhoto trash or in my computers trash at all so that would indicate to no permission issues.
I did an iPhoto repair. I found that about five thousand photos reappeared in one event that had many multiple events combined in it from the past.  I deleted those reappearing photos and my library size shrunk from 60GB to 45GB, which is a great start, but when I look in the master file there are still tons of unwanted photos and if they were all deleted I would expect the whole thing to shrink to about 15 GB’s
Are there any suggestions? Could I upgrade to a better photo program and delete iPhoto while taking just the photos I want and their masters. I am happy to abandon ship on iPhoto if it is having bugs or glitches all around and there is no foreseeable repair.

Someone told me this ~ "There is a reported bug that if you delete a photo then merge or otherwise organize events prior to emptying the iPhoto trash that the master is not deleted" ~ that is what I do every time I organize things so I am wondering how to get rid of this bug or repair it and how to clean up my files to reflect what I want.
Yes there is such a bug.  You can recover your "missing" masters and delete them but it will cost your your projects, i.e. books, calendars, slideshows, etc.  The best solution would be to restore a backup copy  of the library before the deletion and joining of events occurred.  However, it would not have your newer photos.
Here's how to find and cull out those masters:
Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 - download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.>Click on the Add Library button,
2 -  select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
3 - make sure that in the rebuild window the checkbox  "Scavange orphaned photos" is checked.
4 - now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
5 - in the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed. Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.
This will give you a new library with the missing masters grouped in an Album titled Scavenged Photos
from which you can delete them correctly.

  • Aperture Libraries and Disconnected Masters

Aperture is more mysterious every day! Somehow I ended up with two Libraries, one marked (original) which stopped as of 2-11-10. The other seemed to have everything.
The problem is that the original library was adding several hundred GBs to my hard drive. So I began deleting them since they seemed to remain in the other Library. BUT, when I tried to export photos from the remaining Library a note popped up that they could not be exported because the were disconnected from their masters.
Where did the masters go? How do I get them back?
Also, how can I get rid of the extra redundant Library with out this happening? Can they be combined or merged. (Merging info is only when there are two different computers.) Mine are are both on one computer.
Any help would be appreiated. Thanks.

If both libraries somehow pointed to the same masters, and you deleted the masters via one library, it's possible the masters are gone and the references the second library has now point to a file which no longer exists.
I can't say how you got in the state you did, but until you reconcile things, I wouldn't recommend you go around deleting things that you don't want to lose.

  • Mastering house says DDP disks failed... again.

I'm having some serious and mysterious problems with a DVD9 I'm getting mastered for replication. I don't have access to a DLT drive, so I'm sending the DDP files on two DVD-R's, which the mastering house says should be no problem. However, everytime I send the disks, they get fatal errors. Here are the errors they get when they run it through Eclipse:
    1) Opposite track path not valid for single layer
    2) Control data and DDP layer count disagree (CTRL=1, DDP=2)
    3) Control data and DDP main data length disagree
    4) Invalid control data disc size
    5) Invalid control data layer type
I've sent them five different sets of disks, trying everything I could think of: I've tried scrapping the old build files and starting from scratch, I've tried moving the manual layer break to a different place, and I've tried exporting as DDP 2.0., DDP 2.1, and CMF. And I've double-checked everything I can think of to make sure I've specified the disk properties correctly: DL, OTP, manual break, etc., etc.
Does anyone have any other suggestions? I'm feeling a bit desperate and lost.
    --todd
PS: Here is all the relevant technical info I can think of:
It was authored using DVDSP4.1 on a 20" Intel Imac, exported as a disk image (DDP, CMF, etc) and burned using Toast Titanium 7.1. (I used UDF, not video.) The project is about 6.9 gigs. I don't get any serious errors during the build or format. (Just the regular errors that everyone here seems to agree are normal.) There is no CSS, Macrovision, or any of that stuff to complicate things. It's all region. The only less-than-straightforward thing about the whole project is that it is dual-layer. I've burned several playable DL versions on my DL SuperDrive and they work fine.
    And two possibly related threads:
Apple tech support suggested it might have something to do with general media vs authoring media. The connection is unclear to me, so I'm posting on that issue separately as "General Media vs. Authoring Media."
There's also a possible issue around the seamless/non-seamless nature of the layer breaks, which I am posting separately as "Seamless vs Non-Seamless--Receiving Contradictory Advice"
    iMac Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Can you build this to a disc image onto a hard drive and send them that - either on the drive or via FTP?
Did they ask you to use UDF in Toast? Have you tried sending each folder as a data disc?
How about simply dropping the entire image (build to disc image) into toast, use a DL disc and burn it as data... the house should be able to get the image off (which wil conatin all necessary information) and work with that.
You don't need to get into authoring media for this work - you can send each layer on a different DVD-R if the replicators have agreed to this... you just need them to specify exactly how they want to receive it. Most will say DDP2, DDP2.1 or CMF (or any) and then describe what format the discs should be for them to work with them.

  • Master Buss Compression Down. Mastering now!

    Hello all.
It's been a while for me. On the forum that is
Anyway, I've been tooling around with some compression on my master fader in Logic. I very happy with the results. My mixes sound good, but after I bounce it, what's the best way to get the signal hotter without messing up the dynamics? I'm mastering my own stuff at the moment.
I've been in mastering sessions when there was no master buss compression on the mixes, so the mastering engineer would use a combination of compression and limiting and eq.
Now that I've got the compression covered on my end, all I need now is Volume. I've fed a limiter before but the mix loses dynamics and demension. I've seen a mastering engineer start of by "inflating" my waveforms before any compression or limiting. What did he do? It's like he brought up the level in the computer first then began the processing. Is that common? He's very reputable, masters 300 releases a year. If so, that's what I'm talking about. Like normalizing, but perhaps it was some other process? Maybe that's the whole mystery...
    Thanks

    Noah Perry wrote:
Yes I know. I'm not talking about the "lets squash everything to death" issue.
As I master more of my music and other peoples music too, I'm paying more attention to this side of
    the process.
So, like I said. I've got the mix glued up pretty good with my master bus compressor. When I turn up my monitor volume, it sounds good. When played low, it sounds good.
But, in examining my stereo waveform (both visually and sonically) next to other pro-releases, it's not as loud. And I'm not talking about loud as in bad. These releases still sound great with dynamics preserved. What I mean is theirs is just louder than mine. So what's the best way to get my masters a bit louder with out much sacrafice? Because some of these Limiters that are supposed to be transparent, are still a bit unflattering? And using more of the compressors gain makes the mix a little less cool...
When mastering houses need to juice a song up a bit, but the compression is already where it needs to be, what do they use? Feed a limiter? Do they normalize? Do they just use a gain plugin? That''s all I'm saying, folks....any ideas? anybody been in a mastering session and paid really close attention?
    Noah
    Hi,
I quote : "What I mean is theirs is just louder than mine."
This is why, on 100% of music playback devices, there is a knob, which is called "Volume", this is so that the listener can turn it up, or down, according to what they like. You can check any of your stereos, if you like. Make sure they all have this knob.
As soon as you stop this way of thinking, then you will realise that it does not matter if your mix is louder than "theirs". As long as you keep thinking that you have to make your mixes the same as everyone else's, then you are in fact playing the loudness war.
The better approach, IMO, is to realise that your mixes are UNIQUE. And to learn to respect that uniqueness. Then, and only then, will you be able to let go of this "mine is lesser than theirs" way of thinking. And then you will be free to make mixes that are GREAT.
    Cheers

  • Why do I have mysterious cellular data usage (Verizon) every 6 hours on all 3 of my iphone 5's?

I have recently uncovered mysterious cellular usage on three different iPhones. I am a Verizon customer and discovered this by examining the cellular data use logs. What I found are a long series of mysterious data usage logs. I have visited the Genius Bar at my local Apple Store 3 times now to log notes and discuss the issue. It is being escalated.
    The characterstics are as follows:
All my family phones have the appropriate IOS and hardware updates (verified by the GeniusBar at my local Apple Store).
This is occuring across three phones, which happen to all be iphone 5. Two are 5 and the other a new 5s. We do have one iphone 4 in the family but the issue (so far as I can tell), is not happening on it.
One iphone 5 has IOS 7, the other IOS 6. The new 5s has of course IOS 7.
Mysterious data use happens even while connected to wifi.
Each mysterious data use log entry is exactly 6 hours apart. For example: 2:18 AM, 8:18 AM, 2:18 PM, 8:18 PM, 2:18 AM ... etc. It cycles AM and PM, same times, for a day to many days until some condition causes it to change (evolve).
The times evolve. One day it could be cycling through at one time series, then it changes to another time sequence and continues until the next condition.
The data usage is anywhere from a few K to many MB. The largest I've seen is over 100 MB.
The logs clearly show these usages are not due to human interaction. It is a program.
If cellular connection is used frequently (by the owner), the pattern is hard to pick out. Luckily, my family member is very good about only using wifi whenever possible, so these mysterious use patterns are easy to pick out.
Verizon allows access to 90 days worth of data logs, so I downloaded and analyzed them. This has been happening for at least 90 days. I have found 298 instances of mysterious use out of 500 total connections to cellular. A total of 3.5 GB of mysterious cellular data has been recorded as used in that 90 days by this phone alone. Only .6 GB of the total cellular data use is legitimate, meaning by the person.
This issue is occuring across three different phones. Two are iPhone 5, and the third is a recently purchased iPhone 5s. The 5s I have not touched beyone the basic startup. I have left it alone on a desk for 3 days, and looking at the logs, the mysterious data use in the same pattern is occuring.
So ... I am speaking to both sides, Verizon and Apple to get answers. Verizon puts their wall up at data usage. It doesn't matter how it is being used, you simply need to pay for it. Yes, the evidence I have gathered is getting closer to someting on Verizon's end.
Before pressing in that direction, I am hoping someone reading this may recognize this issue as a possible iPhone 5 issue ... OR ... you, right now, go look at your data usage logs available through your carrier's web account, and see if you can pick out a pattern of mysterious use. Look especially at the early morning instances when you are most likely sleeping.
I am hoping this is a simple issue that has a quick resolution. I'm looking for the "ooohhh, I see that now ..." But I am starting to think this might be much bigger, but the fact is, most customers rarely or never look at their data usage details, much less discover mysterious use patterns.
The final interesting (maybe frightening part) thing about all this is that I discovered while talking to Verizon ... they do not divulge which direction the data is going. This goes for any use, mysterious or legitimate. Is cellular data coming to your phone, or leaving it? Is something pulling data from your phone? We know that it is possible to build malware apps, but the catch with my issue is that it is also happening on a brand new iphone 5s with nothing downloaded to it.
    Thanks for your time

Thanks for the replies. It took a while not hearing anything so thought I was alone. I have done many of the suggestions already. The key here is that it occurs on both phones with apps, and phones still packaged in a box.
A Genius Bar supervisor also checked his Verizon data usage log and found the same 6 hour incremental use. Suprisingly, he did not express much intrigue over that. Maybe he did, but did not show it.
I think the 6 hour incremental usage is the main issue here. I spoke with Verizon (again) and they confirmed that all they do is log exactly when the phone connected to the tower and used data. The time it records is when the usage started. I also found out that the time recorded is GMT.
What is using data, unsolicited, every 6 hours?
    Why does it change?
Why does it only happen on the iPhone 5 series and not the 4?
Since no one from Apple seems to be chiming in on this, and I have not received the promised calls from Apple tech support that the Genius Bar staff said I was suppose to receive, it is starting to feel like something is being swept under the rug.
I woke up the other day with another thought ... What application would use such large amounts of data? Well ... music, video, sound and pictures of course. Well ... what would someone set automatically that is of any use to them? hmmm ... video, pictures, sound. Is the iPhone 5 succeptible to snooping? Can an app be buried in the IOS that automatically turns on video and sound recording, and send it somewhere ... every 6 hours? Chilling. I noted that the smallest data usage is during the night when nothing is going on, then it peaks during the day. The Genius Bar tech and I looked at each other when I drew this sine wave graph on the log print outs during an appointment ...

  • How do I move from one external drive to another, without the "Relocate Masters" command?

I have my masters referenced on an external hard drive, and I've been mirroring that drive with another so that I have a backup (the volume names were ApertureLib1 for the primary drive and Photo7 for the backup).  I've filled that drive, so it will no longer be my primary master drive (i.e. all new masters going forward are going on a new, separate drive).  I want to keep one of the two drives online and put the other away as an offsite backup.
The catch is that the primary drive (ApertureLib1) does not place nicely with my Lexar Firewire 400 CF reader; when I insert or eject a card, it has a habit of disconnecting itself.  The backup drive (Photo7) does not exhibit this issue.  So I decided that I'd just rename Photo7 to ApertureLib1 and be on my way; the folder containing all the masters (PhotoLib) is mirrored by using Arrsync (an rsync GUI), so all the files should be there.
Great theory, except that Aperture does not recognize the renamed Photo7 drive as ApertureLib1, despite the system seeing it as such (both in the Finder sidebar and showing up in /Volumes as "ApertureLib1").  The "locate referenced masters" dialog shows ApertureLib1 as 'offline' and does not give me any opportunity to point to the second drive as the master location.
I assume that Aperture is somehow tracking a separate unique identifier for the drive. Does anyone know what this might be and how I might convince it to treat the was-a-backup drive as being the One, True Location for this set of masters?
    Many thanks.
(and I really don't want to use "relocate masters" because I'd first need to delete the exsiting copy on the second drive and then move over all of the images from the first drive, before copying them back to have a backup)

    Hi Kevin,
I understand what you tried to do but it doesn't work that way. Swapping drive names will just mess things up.
You should be able to reconnect the files though: in the Locate Referenced Files dialog make sure you click the Show Reconnect Options button — this will give you access to all the connected drives. Locate one of the files and hit Reconnect All. Should do the trick.

  • USB 6009 - mysterious problem

Have mysterious problems with my new USB 6009.
    I'm using LabView 7 on MacOS-X 10.3.8.
All vi's of DAQmx show "ERROR 15 - Ressource not found".
    Then I tested:
    - "lsdaq" shows the device
    - "nidatalogger" works
    - "mxbaseconfig" doesn't recocgnize it!
I realy have no idea know what to do now?
    Thank you for helping.
    Greetings,
    Stephan

I happend to stumble over the same issue and found a solution.
The problem really seems to be the firmware in the USB-device. There is
only one way (I think) to make USB600x devices work with linux:
You have to start MAX (on a Windows-box) , go to tools - NI-DAQmx configuration - NI-DAQmx USB Driver Selector.
Press "Switch" and select the BASE-Driver for your USB-Device. This
seems to write something into the device's flash memory. After this
procedure you can use the device with linux and DAQmxBase
Funny thing is, mxbaseconfig still can't see it, but nidatalogger finds it.
Hope that helps, even though this thread seems to be rather old...

  • How to find out if any masters are in my Library?

    Hi!
I've been using Aperture for a while (most masters are on different hard drives, but maybe some are in my library by mistake when I imported them), now want to consolidate all my photo-masters on a separate "photo" hard drive and leave in my Aperture Library only the previews and the adjustments.
I have some projects in my library, and my library is 12 GB. Is there a quick way to find out if any of my masters are in the library so I can "take them out" and put them on my separate HD?
If there was a way to sort by "badge" and see the ones not referenced that would be nice.
    Thanks for any help!

Sorry I see I put my question in the wrong category, it should not be in "Book Printing". Sorry, I will report in the right place.
Not sure how to delete this one, though, will mark as answered if I can't find out how to delete it.

  • Inadvertently moved my masters-how can I move them back?

I'm hoping someone here can help me. I'm very new to Aperture, and somehow managed to move my masters for a bunch of my files out of the Aperture library. At least, I'm assuming that's what happened and caused the little red slash in the bottom right of the image previews. How can I move them back? I can locate the folder that I assume was created from the move. I'd be really grateful for any assistance.

These were referenced or managed images? The only way to move them out of the library, and have Aperture not track the move, is to open the library package by right clicking and choosing "show package contents." This isn't easy to do accidentally.
If they weren't managed, they wouldn't have been in the library. In this case, if you moved them around in the finder, then Aperture can loose track and you'll get the missing image icon. If that's the case, you'll need to right click on the image in Aperture and choose "Manage Referenced Files..". From there you can reconnect to your images. Once they are reconnected, and if you want them contained in your Aperture library as managed images, you can choose to "Consolidate Master..." from the "File" menu. This will move them into the Aperture library.

  • Random (mysterious) start-ups from shutdown on MBP 17" (Hi-Res)

    Hi,
lately, my MBP has started to turn itself on at night. I always shut it down completely after a days' work (NOT making it sleep or standby, also NOT closing the lid before the shutdown is done). Actually, I tried waiting 5-10 minutes before closing the lid after the shutdown just to make sure I wasn't interrupting anything.
Now, in the morning, my MBP sits there sleeping (the light on the front is in "breathing" mode), and after opening the lid it is completely booted up.
Syslog shows me it randomly started at some time in the night (between 1h and 5h hours after the shutdown.
Of course I made sure that I have not set a startup time in the power setting's scheduler.
What could be the reason for this?

My MBP 15in also mysteriously self-starts. I have determined that this occurs every evening at 7:00 pm sharp when the AC power is attached. This is despite the fact that I have no scheduled start-up time configured. I have yet to have it happen on battery. It has been happening regularly when nothing else is plugged in, not USB, FW, nothing. Sharing and remote management may be turned on or off as otherwise needed and have no noticed influence.

  • Mysterious Teardown Problem with NIO

I have an NIO proxy server which relays state information from a number of servers to a number of clients. A requirement for this system is that we can restart the proxy server (together with a couple of other components) from a web app.
I tear down the proxy server by
    - interrupting out of the read loop
    - cancelling all keys associated with the channel
    - closing the socket on the channel
    - closing the channel.
I do this for for both the input (server side) channel and the output (client side) channel.
I then discard the proxy server, create a new one and start it up.
Now here's the mysterious bit. The new server operates just fine for a minute or two. And then it stops seeing any input.
The thread responsible for input reading freezes on the call to -
myKeysAdded = myAcceptKey.selector().select();and the stack looks something like this:
WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.poll0(long, int, int[], int[], int[], long)
    WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.poll() line: 270
    WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector.access$400(WindowsSelectorImpl$SubSelector) line: 252
    WindowsSelectorImpl.doSelect(long) line: 133
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).lockAndDoSelect(long) line: 69
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).select(long) line: 80
    WindowsSelectorImpl(SelectorImpl).select() line: 84
ProxyServer$BrowserSelector.run() line: 123If I completely destroy the process (and the jvm) and start a new one everything goes back to working normally.
Has anyone got any suggestions? I'm in hair-tearing mode on this one.
    Thx TOTW.

I tear down the proxy server by
    - interrupting out of the read loopDon't you mean the select() loop?
    - cancelling all keys associated with the channelUnnecessary.
    - closing the socket on the channel
    - closing the channel.Only one of these is necessary. Closing the socket closes the channel and vice versa.
When you have closed all the channels, you then need to call selector.selectNow() (search this forum for why), and then close the selector.

  • Mysterious Data Usage

    Hello,
My wife owns an HTC Thunderbolt.  We are experiencing mysterious data usage.
The data log shows data usage during hours and at times when the phone is not being used.  We have tried closing all apps and resetting the phone.
Still, these nickel and dime data used entries are adding up fast and bring us to the brink of our our plan which we have already extended.
We do not stream video, we do not listen to Pandora.... The phone is used strictly for texts, emails, and phone calls.
Any advice?  Thank you for your help.

Same here - very similar.Times are close but not like yours.
I've deleted the email accounts and re-added them to see if there was a looping email send issue that I've read about.
Funny though, when I review the data use on the phone, "photo" is the app indicating using the most data. So I've turned off and uninstalled everything I can think is tied to that.
